A 101 on North and South Korea

For as long as we can remember, we've heard about troubles between both North and South Korea. But this was heightened last Monday when North Korea fired 500 artillery shells and rockets off its southern coast (as part of its nuclear tests), and 100 of them fell south of a disputed border between the two Koreas. In reply, South Korea fired back with 300 artillery rounds into North Korean waters. The border was first drawn by the UN after the Korean war but its legitmacy has not been accepted by either side, with both sides claiming to be the legitimate government of the entire penisula. To understand the workings behind both North and South Korea, The Evening Edition covered a 101 of the countries' history.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talkback Tuesday: How Soon Is Too Soon To Start Laughing?

It’s been a gloomy March for Malaysians. We’ve been through an array of emotions since the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. The tragedy struck so close to home making it the only thing occupying everyone’s minds and the only topic of conversation. While both our government and other countries scrambled together to seek answers behind the tragedy, the events that unfolded before the glaring public eye was fodder for the press - China blaming Malaysia for hiding details, questionable statements from Malaysian leaders and so on. And while some of us were piously following the developments, some of us were prepared to move on. Cartoonists, satirists and netizens started making jokes about MH370 when investigation developments were shared. Some laughed, some thought it was an insensitive thing to do and some had no reaction at all. But should we be joking in the face of such tragedy? Our lines were open.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talkback Thursday: Is The Internet Too Free?

The internet has spread to a worldwide phenomenon over the past two decades, creating a superhighway of information, commerce and communication unparalleled in human history. Today, people all over the globe are connected together with instantaneous communication, allowing them to see and hear ideas or items that were simply not possible before. However, such freedom also comes with a price. For every advantage that the internet offers, there are also images, words, sounds and items that can be offensive to many people. Regulating this content without undue censorship is the goal of many nations, but how it can be achieved without impinging on the freedom that is present is certainly up for debate. In the past couple of weeks in Malaysia, there have been statements like: 'A special task force will be set up to monitor social media websites to act against those who break the law by spreading rumours or seditious and incendiary remarks online.' "The time has come for us to filter the internet," - Tun Dr Mahathir We’ve also witnessed wild speculation as to what’s happened regarding the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 - due to the necessity of getting information out first, rather than fact checking, or checking up on sources - most of this speculation fueled by reports on social media. So our question was - "Is the Internet too free? Are the calls to censor the Internet reasonable?"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talkback Thursday: Should the racial discourse be explored or ignored?

Racial infliction is often found in our news stories and everyday conversation. And the result is often damaging, making some of us question why we go down that path at all.
