Talkback: Happiness over salaries and job titles?
Would you choose a fair work-life balance over a big fat paycheck? Well, according to a survey carried out recently, Malaysians prefer a happy lifestyle, centred on work-life balance, over a successful career that brings in the big bucks. The Kelly Global Workforce Index (KGWI) carried out by global recruitment firm, Kelly Services, found that 67% of Malaysians felt that way together with 65% of respondents from China (surprisingly) and 76% of respondents in Thailand. Singapore stands on its own with 57% of respondents feeling the complete opposite. No surprises there. But while we’d prefer a less-stress life for lesser income, can we sustain our current living costs? Everyone’s feeling the pinch and the only so-called good thing happening right now is the drop in petrol price. Everything else seem to be going up in cost - electricity, food, transportation. Just today, school bus operators are implementing a 20% hike in their fares despite the drop in fuel prices. Their reason for the hike? The escalating operating and maintenance costs. So, how are Malaysians going to survive on a mediocre monthly income? Can Malaysians really have it all; can we choose a work-life balance over higher salaries and still be happy?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cleaning the City with an App
If you’ve managed to avoid a pothole while driving on the road, well done to you! It’s almost impossible to find 50 metres of a smooth, well-tarred stretch of road in PJ these days. And potholes is just one of the litany of complaints that PJ residents’ have been unhappy about for the longest time, with little action being taken by the city council. But that’s about to change with the launching of the MyCleanCity app last week. Designed as an online notice board for residents to share their grievances and the council to act upon them, it just might be the answer to better accountability.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Focus: Merdeka Center - Corruption Perception survey 2014
Corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that affects all countries, undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and contributes to governmental instability. Corruption attacks the foundation of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the rule of law and creating bureaucratic quagmires whose only reason for existing is the solicitation of bribes. Economic development is stunted because foreign direct investment is discouraged and small businesses within the country often find it impossible to overcome the "start-up costs" required because of corruption. Malaysia, as we know, is no stranger to corruption. We’ve all heard about it, some of us read about it on an almost daily basis - and some people might even turn a blind eye to it. The Merdeka Center however, conducted a survey - "Perception towards Corruption 2014 Peninsular Malaysia Voter Survey 2014" On International Anti-Corruption day 2014 we had in the studio with us Seng Keat, the Merdeka Center research manager, and he talked us through the findings from this year's results. In Focus: A.P.O.S.L.
Science has led us to finding out things that we have today - without science, the world in which we live in would be a very different place. There’d be no mobile phones, no Internet, no Facebook, heck - we wouldn’t even have this show or a radio station. Science is based on curiosity - and the how to’s. Somehow, some of us have lost that curiosity; some of us have stopped asking ‘how?’ and ‘why’? On the flip-side there are people who think that we should know more, that we should be aware of some of the fundamental scientific principles that make up our world. After all, some of these principles are not exactly rocket science. In the studio with us were a couple of people from a group that call themselves A.P.O.S.L - The Advocates For The Propagation Of Scientific Literacy. They feel that too many people are simply not curious anymore - and they want to change that.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talkback Tuesday: What's in a name?
Last month, residents and companies in PJ were up in arms over the one-way road change within the PJ State area. There was a lot of confusion and traffic jams, with upset drivers claiming that there weren’t sufficient signages to explain the change. Today, it has been announced that 8 roads will be renamed from tomorrow (November 26th) onwards. The names of these roads will be changed to honour previous royal heads of state. And we’re talking about some major roads like Jalan Duta, Jalan Ipoh and Lebuhraya Mahameru to name a few. The last time a road renaming exercise took place was in 2008 and DBKL had to bear the brunt of the criticism from the public. The “victim” was Jalan Alor, the hawker food street famous for the last 35 years. It’s new name was Jalan Kejora. Social media has been on fire since this announcement with many wondering why there should be a change in the first place and why there’s been a lack of public consultation. The onslaught of fiery comments also comes at the back of yesterday’s report of DBKL wanting to demolish their current 12-storey Tower 2 and replace it with a skyscraper “to create more office space”. The projects cost’ is expected to be within the 7-figure mark. While it’ll be interesting to see what DBKL and the government will have to say about this in the next few days, this evening, we wanted to know how this road renaming exercise will affect either you or your business?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talkback Thursday: Where do we fall short when it comes to protecting our children?
Today is Universal Children’s Day. Nearly 25 years ago, the world made a promise to children: that we do everything in our power to protect and promote their rights to survive and thrive, to learn and grow, to make their voices heard and to reach their full potential. As with many other countries, Malaysia has old challenges combined with new problems that deprive many children of their rights and the benefits of development. Rape of underage children come to mind, child brides, missing children and the list goes on. Surely we could do more to put a stop to all these but how? On Talkback Thursday, we asked you: Where do we fall short when it comes to protecting our children?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talkback Tuesday: A Helping Hand For Paws
Animal welfare has somewhat become a hot topic in the past few years in Malaysia. We constantly have a steady stream of animal abuse cases in the news. In addition to that, there is also a concern with the inhumane method that our local councils are implementing towards controlling the population of stray animals. And today, PAWS (Paws Animal Welfare Society) have been asked to relocate from a home that they’ve known for 28 years near Subang airport. They have been given 14 days to relocate over 400 dogs and 200 cats - if they don’t they face a hefty fine. The animal welfare situation in Malaysia just doesn’t seem to be improving and the number of animal neglect and abuse cases is ever increasing. What does this say about us as Malaysians? Do we lack empathy when it comes to animals?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
