S2 Ep 7676: The Legendary Alfie Kohn on Time-Outs, Accidental Manipulation and 'Motivating' Kids.
Ok - big moment you guys. I’m excited (and somewhat embarrassed!) to share this special conversation with you—one that originally aired back in 2022 in my Facebook community Let's Raise Emotionally Intelligent Kids.Looking back, I can’t help but cringe! I was SO nervous and excited to be speaking with the universal expert on parenting, education, and human behaviour: Alfie Kohn.Let’s just say I wasn’t as polished or professional as I am now… but the insights and wisdom? They’re just as powerful today as they were then.Alfie Kohn, renowned author of Punished by Rewards, No Contest, The Homework Myth, and my personal favourite, Unconditional Parenting, (plus many others!) brings his groundbreaking research and passion for progressive education to this chat.In this episode, we dive into:🔍 Why rewards can be just as harmful as punishments for children.💡 What people really mean when they say, "I want to motivate my child" (spoiler: it’s often about compliance).🎭 The hidden problems with praise—especially those high-pitched, "good job!" moments.🚫 The true impact of time-outs and forcible isolation on kids’ emotional well-being.One of the most profound ideas we explored? The belief that we need to reinforce kids to behave a certain way. This comes from a hidden assumption that children aren’t naturally inclined to do well on their own—and it’s time we rethink that.I’m so grateful Alfie agreed to let me share this conversation here on the podcast—it’s one you won’t want to miss.*** If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. S2 Ep 7575: The Truth About Rewards, Stars, Stickers, and Points with Megg Thompson
Are We Training Kids to Perform? The Truth About Rewards, Behaviour & Connection with Megg Thompson. We’ve all used them—sticker charts, gold stars, rewards for good behaviour. But what if these systems aren’t actually helping kids grow? What if they’re just training them to comply? (And then when we're not around, they stop "performing" because the motivation was never really theirs to begin with...)In this episode, I sit down with Megg Thompson, a former Kindergarten teacher turned neuro-affirming Certified Behavior Consultant and Life Coach, to unpack the real impact of rewards and compliance-based parenting and teaching. We dive into:✨ Why kids "hold it together" at school but melt down at home✨ The hidden problems with reward charts and behavior incentives✨ Why compliance shouldn’t be the goal—and what to focus on instead✨ How traditional discipline alienates neurodivergent and struggling kids✨ What actually works to build cooperation, trust, and connectionMegg brings her signature humour and deep insight to a conversation that will challenge what you think you know about kids’ behaviour. Also, she made me keep in the drunk-squirrel moments she and I had around 22-23 min mark - enjoy listening to us rack our brains when she lost her train of thought! If you're ready to shift from power-over to partnership, ditch the rewards, and start building real, lasting connection with your kids—this episode is a must-listen.Find Megg Thompson here:http://www.instagram.com/meggthompsonbehaviorhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn5Q6ZPasX6ebCZ59ClM4qwhttps://meggthompson.com/*** If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. S2 Ep 7474: A Little Rant (The Double Standards in Emotional Intelligence)
We all want our kids to be emotionally intelligent, right? Buuut are we actually teaching it in a way that helps them thrive? In this episode, I let loose a mini-rant (sorry not sorry) about some common myths and misconceptions that are sending mixed messages about emotions to our kids - without us even realising it.🤔 We tell kids to “calm down” when they’re upset, but do we always model calmness when everything goes wrong?🤔 We expect them to “use their words,” but are we showing them how?🤔 The truth is, emotional intelligence isn’t just something we teach... it’s something our kids learn from us.Join me as I share simple, powerful ideas that can help us guide our kids through big emotions, build REAL connection, and create a home where feelings are understood, not shut down.No guilt, no pressure. Just an honest chat (aka rant) about how we can show up as the emotional leaders our kids need.Let’s rethink the way we teach emotional intelligence - starting today. 💛Share with someone you know might find this helpful or insightful!Steph.***Welcome to the Emotionally Intelligent Parenting podcast,I’m Stephanie Pinto. I’m an Aussie mum of 2, a best-selling author, international speaker and award-winning coach… And I love all things Emotional Intelligence and parenting.Although we’re far from perfect as parents and our kids still have big emotions from time to time, meltdowns are few and far between.Compassion, listening and problem-solving are our go-to strategies when things go sideways, and our home is a really nice place to be.Oh and, our house is a punishment-free zone!!We’re only able to do all of this because we’ve learnt to handle our own emotions, we understand our kids’ emotions and behaviour, and we work together to solve problems as a team.If you have caught some of the episodes I've recorded with my husband Alex, go back to these episodes:Ep 54: Parenting on the Same Page: My Husband’s Journey into Emotional Intelligence.Ep 60: How We Failed As New Parents with Steph and Alex.Ep 64: When Meltdowns Turn Physical - Handling Hitting, Throwing, Kicking, And Keeping Your Cool.Follow me on Insta @emotionally.intelligent.parentHave you joined my Facebook Group for parents? S2 Ep 7272: Stop Being Hijacked By Your Emotions: 10 Lessons in Emotional Intelligence Every Parent Needs to Know.
Most of us were never taught how to handle our emotions... we were just told to "calm down" or "stop overreacting."But here’s the truth: all emotions are okay, not all behaviour is. And as parents, the way we handle our emotions directly shapes how our kids learn to manage theirs.Today on the Emotionally Intelligent Parenting podcast, I’m sharing 10 powerful lessons about emotions:How to work with them instead of against them, how to stop stress from taking over, and how to develop the emotional intelligence you need to parent with confidence, calm, and connection. Stop taking things personally, stop believing there are bad emotions, and stop thinking your kids' emotions are out of control (even when it really seems like they are!)Because let’s be real... if we don’t learn to handle our emotions, they’ll handle us. 🫣🌟🌟🌟 I forgot to mention my upcoming Emotional Intelligence for People-Pleasers live class - it's in February, tickets via my Facebook Community, link below.🎟️ Here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1WiQyUxynD/I mentioned my Emotional Intelligence courses for parents and educators, here are a few of them:Introduction to Raising Emotionally Intelligent KidsSupporting Anxious KidsFrom Reactive to Responsive Parenting: Stop the Yelling with Emotional IntelligenceEFT Tapping: Overcoming Stress and Strong Emotions RapidlyFrom Blowups to Balance: Supporting ADHD Kids✅ All available at www.stephaniepinto.com/courses*** If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. S2 Ep 6868: Early Warning Signs: How to Spot Dysregulation in Your Kids.
Today I'm sharing about the fascinating (and sometimes baffling) world of early warning signs of dysregulation in kids. Have you ever noticed your child getting overly silly, suddenly antagonizing their sibling, or making strange noises like growling or hissing? These little quirks aren’t random. They’re often signs that your child is beginning to feel emotionally overwhelmed or out of sync. When you learn to recognise these subtle cues, you can step in with calm and supportive strategies that help prevent meltdowns, build connection, and teach emotional resilience.Plus, a special guest makes an unexpected appearance! My daughter video-bombs the intro with some dance moves and plenty of giggles, so if you’re watching on YouTube, you’re in for a treat. You're welcome ;)(Watch at youtube.com/c/StephaniePinto)Tune in to learn the signs of emotional overwhelm by finding clues in your child's (frustrating) behaviour.*** If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. S2 Ep 6767: Meltdowns and Shutdowns: The Neuroscience Behind Extreme Dysregulation
Does your child or teen ever lash out, shut down, or completely refuse to listen? Maybe you’ve tried timeouts, threats, or punishments, but they just don’t work—or worse, they seem to make things even harder. Sound familiar? Here’s the thing: those big emotional outbursts are NOT about being “naughty” or “willful.” There’s so much more happening under the surface, in their brain and body, and that’s exactly what we’re diving into today. Today I’ll help you understand what’s *really* going on when your child is argumentative, explosive, or just plain "rude", why some of those old-school parenting tactics aren’t helpful, and, most importantly, how you can use positive strategies to co-regulate with them to bring their emotions back in balance and support their behaviour. If you’re ready to feel less overwhelmed and more connected to your child, you’re in the right place. And as I mentioned in the episode, I created a course specifically for this topic and these challenges. It's called Defusing and Decoding Challenging Behaviour, and it covers how understanding the nervous system of your child gives you the tools you need to navigate (and even often avoid) really challenging/disruptive behaviours. One parent who took the course emailed me within minutes of finishing the course saying: "STEPH. This is by far the BEST course I have taken, I finally get why my son erupts and goes off, and I feel like I have a whole bag of tools to deal with it! Thank you so so much. I'm recommending it to all my friends!"Find the course at https://www.stephaniepinto.com/courses *** If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. S2 Ep 6565: Good Enough Parenting: Letting Go of Perfection and Comparison with Dr. Catherine Kizana
In this inspiring episode, I sit down with Dr. Catherine Kizana—doctor, parent coach, and advocate for helping parents thrive—to talk about what it truly means to be a “good enough” parent. Drawing on attachment research and her coaching experience, Catherine reminds us that parenting isn’t about being flawless. It’s about being present, embracing the power of repair when we make mistakes, and meeting our children’s real needs—not the ones we think we should meet.We also tackle one of the biggest traps parents fall into: comparison. Catherine shares how to stop comparing your inner struggles to the perfect-looking lives of others on social media and start focusing on what really matters in your family. If you’re tired of the constant pressure to do more, be more, and keep up, this episode will help you step back, breathe, and parent from a place of connection and confidence.Tune in now to take the first step in letting go of comparison and embracing the messy, beautiful journey of being “good enough". S2 Ep 6464: When Meltdowns Turn Physical: How to Handle Hitting, Throwing, Kicking, And Keeping Your Cool
This episode is inspired by a really thoughtful comment from a listener on our last episode over on YouTube. They asked about one of the toughest parenting challenges: how to handle meltdowns when your child gets physically aggressive—hitting, kicking, or even breaking things.Parenting through aggression and meltdowns is arguably the hardest thing we face.Alex (the husband's back!) and I dive into the question from a listener: How do you handle it when a child melts down and gets physically aggressive? We’re sharing our own experiences with this, including how we’ve navigated hitting, kicking, and even destructive behaviour using emotional intelligence and compassion. We go through step-by-step strategies for handling those tough moments—like during transitions or when switching off a device—while holding firm boundaries around unsafe or hurtful actions. We also clear up some big confusion around consequences: when they’re helpful, when they’re not, and why punishments and holding a grudge can actually backfire. If you’ve ever struggled to keep your cool during your child’s meltdowns, this episode is full of relatable insights and practical tips to help you feel more calm and in control.Have you seen my 5 new online self-paced courses on Emotional Intelligence and parenting?! S2 Ep 6161: Mind Over Munchies: Raising Balanced Eaters and Building Healthy Food Relationships with Fiona Kane.
Welcome back, everyone! This week, we're diving into a topic that hits home for so many of us: how we talk about food with our kids (and perhaps even around them when we think they’re not listening). I’m joined by the fabulous Fiona Kane, an award-winning Nutritional Medicine Practitioner and Mind Body Eating Coach, and we explored how our words and attitudes around food can set the stage for our kids’ relationship with eating (and emotions!) - and yes, how we can keep it healthy too. We’ll chat about the accidental ways we nudge our kids toward emotional eating (who knew?), how our own beliefs about food can rub off on them, and why asking open-ended questions can be a game-changer for a more mindful approach. Fiona, who’s been all over Sky News Australia, 9 News, and ABC Radio, brings her practical tips on breaking habits like boredom eating and finding joy outside of food—for both us and the kids. So, if you’re looking to raise happy, healthy eaters (or tackle a few food habits of your own), plug in! S2 Ep 6060: How We Failed As New Parents with Steph and Alex.
Today, we're pulling back the curtain on our parenting - and let’s just say, it wasn’t all sunshine and Instagram-worthy moments. This is a bunch of things we wish we knew when we first became parents...With Alex's childhood blueprint and programming the *polar opposite* of mine, we had a lot to unlearn (and re-learn) when it came to navigating the chaos of parenthood together. We talk about: - How giving each other space saved us from spiralling arguments. - Why you should never take your kids’ words, or your partner’s emotions, personally. - Alex’s journey to taking accountability and breaking the cycle of reactive behaviour. - My struggle to ask for help and express my feelings (spoiler: it wasn’t pretty). - The power of understanding emotional hijacks and knowing when to step out of the situation- How to “strike when the iron is cold.” to prevent shame, blame and basically more conflict. We’ll also explore how his upbringing (where emotions basically didn't exist) impacted our dynamic and how we’ve worked to defuse problems before they explode into snapping and snowballing. It’s real, raw, and maybe even a little uncomfortable—but if you’ve ever felt like you’re failing as a parent or partner, trust us, you’re not alone. Tune in for honest lessons, practical tips, and a whole lot of heart.Hope you guys enjoy.(Please ask us questions! Send us your feedback! S2 Ep 5959: How to Get The Happier, Calmer and Connected Family You Want With Emotional Intelligence
Today I’m sharing an episode where I was the guest – being interviewed by JoAnn Crohn and Brie Tucker on the No Guilt Mom podcast. So, you’ve decided you want a happier, calmer, and more connected family, eh? Well, friend, welcome to the rollercoaster ride known as “parenting with emotional intelligence.” Parenting often involves navigating different styles, which, being 100% honest, can sometimes feel like you and your partner are in a three-legged race…on ice. Emotional intelligence helps you understand each other’s perspectives and find common ground. Just imagine your kid having the ability to understand and manage their emotions while empathizing with others. Sounds like a dream, right? By nurturing emotional intelligence, you’re not just preparing them for playground politics but equipping them for life’s bigger challenges. Plus, who wouldn’t want a kid who can articulate their feelings instead of falling apart or throwing things in fits of anger? So, if you’re dreaming of a happier, calmer, and more connected family, emotional intelligence is your secret weapon. Trust me, the journey might be bumpy, but the destination is oh-so-worth it. Who knows, you might even become that zen parent who handles those spaghetti-throwing incidents with a smile. Now, that’s emotional intelligence at work! Today I’m pulling back the curtain on my own experience with anxiety and how I overcame it with Emotional Intelligence. Because I know so many of you, whether as parents or individuals, are grappling with anxiety, too.I explore the different types of anxiety disorders (yes, there’s more than one!) and dig into the problematic thinking patterns that underpin and fuel anxiety. This gives you such a clear window into seeing how an anxious child thinks and perceives the world around them.Whether you’ve experienced anxiety yourself or you want to understand your kids through it, this episode is packed with insights, personal stories, and practical advice to help you build a life of calm and confidence.*** If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. Alex (the husband!) and I are getting real about the rollercoaster of raising kids in a world full of online games, social media, and YouTube. We know the internet isn’t going anywhere, so instead of banning it all, we talk about finding that balance between letting our kids enjoy the digital world and keeping them safe.We did make the decision to remove YouTube from our home, and we share why we chose to do it. But our kids do have access to computer games, Minecraft, Roblox, and so on.Alex - who’s a big-time gamer - talks about setting smart boundaries for our kids on things like YouTube Kids and online games. His perspective as a gamer really adds a fresh angle, and he’s seriously got some solid tips.Oh, and there's a wild story from Alex about how our son decided to jump off the roof (yes, you read that right!). It was a reminder of why staying aware and tuned in is so important, no matter what your kids are up to.We also tackle the tougher topic of online dangers, like predators, and how to talk to kids about staying safe. You absolutely NEED to give your kids the knowledge, without scaring them.Tune in for our take on raising tech-savvy kids safely—without saying “no” to everything fun.***If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. S1 Ep 4949: Kids and Big Emotions: How to Dial Up Your Emotional Intelligence and Respond Calmly.
In this solo episode, I’m talking about Kids and Big Emotions: How to Dial Up Your Emotional Intelligence and Respond Calmly. Here’s the thing—before we can help our kids manage their emotions, we have to accept that they HAVE emotions. Emotions that are normal. Healthy. Natural. Supposed to be.Remember when your child was learning to walk, read, or ride a bike? Did you step in and do it for them, rush them, or get annoyed when they didn’t get it right away? Or did you give them time, stay patient, and let them figure it out?!It’s the same with emotions! Kids need to feel their way through them in order to learn how to handle them. But we often jump in too quickly because it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient to let them ride the emotional wave. The truth is, when we allow them to go through those messy feelings, we’re giving them the tools for self-regulation.I'll tell you the one thing you can do that will completely shift how you handle things the next time your child is crying, stomping, or having a meltdown.I’ll also be sharing a viral quote of mine that really hit home for so many parents. In this solo episode of the Emotionally Intelligent Parenting Podcast, I dive into a recent bedtime meltdown with one of our kids that could have gone COMPLETELY off the rails. I take you through exactly how I managed to stay calm (wasn't easy), change my perspective on her behaviour (super helpful), and co-regulate with her until we both found our way back to peace.... and her into bed! I also share practical tips and strategies you can use when your child is having a tough, emotionally charged moment. I like to think this episode is a heartfelt reminder that even in the most challenging times, we have the power to be the parents our children need. Enjoy! S1 Ep 2828: My Wake-Up Call This Week: Navigating Scary Videos and Bedtime Meltdowns
After removing YouTube from our home about 4 months ago (see previous episode on this in Dec 2023), we had a huge setback this past week. This is a pretty vulnerable episode, I wish I handled myself and the situation better... but, lesson learnt. I know you'll take a lot away from this episode - I speak about boundaries, safety, dealing with big emotions, dysregulation, anxiety and even laughing in the face of a crying child (yep, that was me. Told you I'm not perfect!).Do your kids access YouTube in your home? How does you find it - fine, worrying or downright stressful? I'd love to know.***If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you. S1 Ep 2727: When All The Emotions Regulation Tools Don't Work, with Alice Bullivant.
What can we do when all the usual emotional regulation techniques and strategies fall short for our child? If you've wondered this, you're in the right place.Alice is an ‘energy plumber’. She unblocks the blocks that people have when nothing else seems to 'work'. In this episode, she speaks about what happens when problems in the body, such as primitive (baby) reflexes don’t integrate into purposeful, functional behaviours. Behavioural challenges, disorganisation, learning difficulties and even anxiety (like with my own child!) can come up.And so when all the usual “tools” don’t work – it can be life-changing to be open to taking another route. Alice was captured by kinesiology when her son was unhappy, angry, impulsive, yet very bright, within 5 sessions of kinesiology she had a “different child”.Alice shared a powerful story about a client, a boy she worked with who after receiving kinesiology with her, no longer needed a whole load of supports and plans at school to get through a day, his after-school meltdowns reduced significantly, and he was no longer stuck in a pattern of strict organisation in his bedroom (a coping mechanism of anxiety).I hope you enjoy this episode and if you’re wondering whether kinesiology might help you and your child, please get in touch with Alice, here are her links:www.kinesialice.com.auAll social media: @kinesialice***If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you.
