There are roughly 80,000 elk hunters in Idaho - I'm asking you all to make this episode a priority. Around 600 wolves have been harvested in the last two years in Idaho and that's largely due to trapping. That may sound like a lot, but if you peel back some layers you'll see that 600 isn't enough to keep wolf numbers from growing. We're already ten times over objective in Idaho. We need more Sportsmen to put their precious hard earned dollars into trapping, which is a very expensive and time consuming proposition. If you're like me, having a young family prevents me from running a trap line and checking sets every 72 hours which is required by law. I don't own a snowmobile and I cannot break away to dedicate the necessary time to do trapping justice. Luckily, there's still a few trappers out there that are willing and able to put the hard work in...and we can join forces and help them recoup some of their overhead when it comes to trapping. Foundation for Wildlife Management is an organization that helps reimburse hunters and trappers for their expenses when it comes to a wolf hunting or trapping. Anywhere from $500-1,000 depending on the take method. This is not a bounty, this is purely a partial reimbursement. If you're a member, you qualify for a reimbursement and your dollars help reimburse those that are getting it done. Just Webb is our guest today, and he's here to set the record straight on what F4WM does, why we need to manage wolves and how to take action. Wasting time pounding a keyboard on social media is not a favorable action. You will not change anyone's mind, so why not put your money where your mouth is and learn how this foundation is making it possible for our future generations to have wildlife resources. This episode is designed to create action for the listener. On the drive home from the Western Hunting Summit I record my thoughts on the event, where I saw weaknesses in some of the attendees and I challenge the listeners to identify their areas of opportunity when it comes to creating the best version of themselves. At the summit in Bozeman, MT we had subject matter experts lecture on certain topics to help newer western hunters evolve their game faster. Some of the areas or topics covered were: Brian Barney - Backcountry Hunting Ryan Lampers - Backcountry Nutrition Hillary Lampers - Longevity Mark Livesay - Digital E Scouting MTN Tough Fitness - Mental Toughness Randy Newberg - Public Lands Dan Staton - Leveraging Hunting This whole experience was so much fun and there's a lot of information covered, so I dive into how I got the campers to hone in on making progress everyday. In the cast, I go over my story on fitness and hunting and how they collided to bring about ElkShape. As a bonus, I injected about 30 minutes of Mark Livesay's lecture on creating your hunt plan properly. Some really insightful information and we hope to get Mark on this podcast soon to dive deeper into the topic which undoubtedly gets overlooked. ElkShape Camp Online is LIVE! Learn more HERE! Today we record while driving the Instagram Bear Hunt Winner Bryce Peters to the airport as we finished up the spring bear hunt in Idaho. Bryce was a complete stranger prior to winning this hunt, and we met at camp and hunted for bears together all week. Getting to know Bryce was a true pleasure, we also had Mark Boardman & Erik Barber of Vortex Optics in camp as well. It was a very challenging week of bear hunting in Idaho as the bear rut hadn't kicked in yet, weather was hot and dry, and we struggled from the word go. Other interesting topics covered in the cast is Bryce's backcountry learning curve, how he's evolved as a solo hunter and some of his adventures from the Frank Church wilderness in Idaho. Today we sit down to record with Brian Lynn of Sportsmen’s Alliance. We as sportsmen face a massive challenge of removing the societal disconnect from nature. The animal rights movement that aims to end all hunting is growing and so is their budget. Their unity, reach, and resources enables them to buy lobbyists and influencers which is why we are seeing more ballot initiatives, legal challenges and appeals, when it comes to dismantling our hunting privilege. We discuss as hunters, how we can serve our own best interest, where we can effectively put our money and time to see the most success in the courtroom. Sportsman’s Alliance has been around for decades and their sleeves are rolled up doing their damnedest for our cause. We hunters need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot by tearing each other down. We continue to make ourselves look bad on social and mainstream media which ultimately leads to division at the ballot box and over legislation. Now, more than ever we need to help the Sportsmen’s Alliance and their team of lawyers fight the good fight in the name of conservation and hunting opportunities for generations to come. Ted Ramirez Jr. is on the show today to inspire us about the highly romanticized DIY Alaskan Moose hunt. Admittedly, it's always been on my radar, but I haven't committed to it yet. The main reason is I would not want to miss out on elk hunting here in the lower 48. Ted also breaks down his personal fitness journey, and what it is like working in the Hunting Industry. Ted's Dad started Caribou Gear over a decade ago - makers of the ultra light synthetic game bags. If you are serious about hunting, you owe it to yourself to not use cheese cloth. I used to because I simply didn't know what I didn't know. As a hunter, my concern is a higher meat yield and better tasting game meat. Here's what you need to know on this episode, Josh Boyd resides in Northwest Montana and is in his mid-forties. He is probably one of the most highly regarded DIY backcountry bowhunters that I know. He's written hundreds of articles for publications and websites on numerous topics that pertain to hunting out West. Josh is a super humble dude, but it was very special to talk one-on-one in person and record this episode. We were at a crowded coffee shop at the time of this recording, but the information we cover is incredible for both rookie and veteran elk hunters. Josh works as a biologist and has logged more than a lifetime of experience in the woods. He's a woodsman, student, father, and teacher. What started as an idea, quickly escalated to a reality this weekend. 20 humble, hungry and positive elk hunters made their way to Spokane Valley, WA for 3 days for the inaugural ElkShape Camp. I was joined by some of the most amazing humans as subject matter experts to help this camp knock the socks off of the attendees. Thank you doesn't quite cut the mustard. This camp was supposed to impact and elevate everyone's game, but ultimately it made me understand the importance of encouragement, humility, and positivity. So thank you all for making me a better version of myself. We leverage elk hunting to make ourselves more disciplined on family, faith, finances, fitness and elk hunting. We talked about using your elk hunting filter to elevate every aspect in your life. We are lucky to call ourselves elk hunters, and it is easily the best excuse to wake up earlier, eat better, lead stronger, clean up our diet, love and serve more, and stay focused on our priorities throughout the year. I'm joined by 3 absolute elk hunting studs as we recorded at my house after day 1 of the ElkShape Camp. Jason Campbel @jason.campbell.bowhunt sent me a dozen or so questions on how to prepare for his inaugural elk hunt out West with 3 buddies. I thought it would be a cool idea to go over his preliminary questions live on this podcast and coach him through the process of narrowing down a state, narrowing down an area, and all the unseen logistics that he'll need to be aware of. Jason is a stellar dude with tons of humility and hunger to go West and experience some fantastic public land elk hunting. If you're like Jason and are dreaming of doing this one day, why not now? After many years of saving up for a Mountain Lion Hunt and hustling several outfitters to work out some sort of arrangement, I got the call I've been waiting for. As a resident of Washington State you cannot use dogs to hunt Mountain Lions like you once were able to. Lion numbers are growing and management is extremely difficult without the use of dogs. I have been hoping to find an outfitter in Idaho that could help me achieve my bucket list hunt of hunting cats with dogs, and I finally got the best hound guy to return my phone call and take me out for lion hunting. Mike from Longtail Outfitters is a 25 year old houndsman who runs a legit operation out of northern Idaho. We linked up today to talk about our hunt, his operation and the biology and behavior of mountain lions. We also get into hunting spring bear and public land DIY bear hunts in northern Idaho. We also cover elk hunting tactics and some mistakes folks make when coming out West to hunt elk with archery equipment. This is a fun episode, thanks for listening! Today we're talking hunting and financial fitness. We sit down and record with Jeff Bynum on best financial practices for hunters who want to hunt without being broke. We go over the pitfalls of being house poor, credit cards, school loans, retirement planning and discipline. This topic is extremely important and cannot be overlooked. Money is just a tool, so you have to treat it just like your health and doing things that require daily discipline to achieve your longterm goals. Here's some background info on Jeff: In the fall of 2008 I was introduced to an uncommon approach to financial decision making and entered the financial services industry. Teaching through holistic philosophy, I educate my clients on how to avoid many of the failures often experienced in conventional wealth-accumulation models. Over the years, I've been fortunate to build many relationships throughout the United States with professionals, small business owners and medical practitioners. I've enjoyed standing by their side while they grow towards a better financial future. Today, my practice Financial Outfitters Group is focused on serving those dedicated to America’s tradition of hunting and fishing. Whether you're a business owner, professional in the hunting and fishing world, or just an avid outdoors-man like myself, I'm here to guide you through the financial wilderness to a path of proven success. In 2015, my family moved to the great state of Texas. It's been an adjustment having grown up as a public lands hunter but I'm thoroughly enjoying all the amazing hunting and fishing Texas has to offer. I've been blessed with many opportunities to hunt and fish with friends and clients all across the US. Every year come September, you'll find me chasing elk with my bow in the backcountry of the Rockies! I have an amazingly supportive wife, son and daughter who all share in the love of the outdoors. Brian Rhead is sort of a legend in my mind. He's a blue collar lineman by day, he hustles on the side as a taxidermist, and he's hunted around the world. He guides in Alaska and Mexico, and he's the only guy I know that is not a millionaire that has the wild sheep Grand Slam. He did it in 3 years on a blue collar budget. He traded his time for guiding, taxidermy, and had some luck, but in 3 years time he did the unthinkable and harvested all 4 wild sheep - Rocky, Stone, Dall and Desert. We brought him on to talk about his elk hunting prowess, how he's harvested 30 bulls with a bow, how he competed professionally at archery, and how he manages hunting around the world while having a wife and three kids with a blue collar salary. Brian is pure gold, he's extremely humble, and a stone cold killer. I hope you enjoy listening to some of his crazy stories on this episode. Episdoe 53 is all about testing yourself and seeking out new challenges. We bring on the perfect guest once again, a guy who is truly blue collar, family man, and gets after it when it comes to public land elk hunting.
