Today we record while driving the Instagram Bear Hunt Winner Bryce Peters to the airport as we finished up the spring bear hunt in Idaho. Bryce was a complete stranger prior to winning this hunt, and we met at camp and hunted for bears together all week. Getting to know Bryce was a true pleasure, we also had Mark Boardman & Erik Barber of Vortex Optics in camp as well. It was a very challenging week of bear hunting in Idaho as the bear rut hadn't kicked in yet, weather was hot and dry, and we struggled from the word go. Other interesting topics covered in the cast is Bryce's backcountry learning curve, how he's evolved as a solo hunter and some of his adventures from the Frank Church wilderness in Idaho. We also get into his background in finance and go over some of his investment strategies and retirement angles that he's learned while being in the industry. We both are striving for financial independence so it's pretty exciting to learn how he's managed debt and kept himself whole after college. The main reason is I would not want to miss out on elk hunting here in the lower 48. Ted also breaks down his personal fitness journey, and what it is like working in the Hunting Industry. This is an extremely important episode for anyone exploring the backcountry in bear country. What started as an idea, quickly escalated to a reality this weekend. 20 humble, hungry and positive elk hunters made their way to Spokane Valley, WA for 3 days for the inaugural ElkShape Camp. I was joined by some of the most amazing humans as subject matter experts to help this camp knock the socks off of the attendees. Thank you doesn't quite cut the mustard. This camp was supposed to impact and elevate everyone's game, but ultimately it made me understand the importance of encouragement, humility, and positivity. After many years of saving up for a Mountain Lion Hunt and hustling several outfitters to work out some sort of arrangement, I got the call I've been waiting for. As a resident of Washington State you cannot use dogs to hunt Mountain Lions like you once were able to. Lion numbers are growing and management is extremely difficult without the use of dogs. I have been hoping to find an outfitter in Idaho that could help me achieve my bucket list hunt of hunting cats with dogs, and I finally got the best hound guy to return my phone call and take me out for lion hunting. Mike from Longtail Outfitters is a 25 year old houndsman who runs a legit operation out of northern Idaho. Adam Grenda is living his dream! He's a pilot for the US Government in Alaska, and lives in King Salmon. He moved there from Idaho a few years back with his wife. Brian Rhead is sort of a legend in my mind. He's a blue collar lineman by day, he hustles on the side as a taxidermist, and he's hunted around the world. He guides in Alaska and Mexico, and he's the only guy I know that is not a millionaire that has the wild sheep Grand Slam. He did it in 3 years on a blue collar budget. Great episode today with Ber Yang of Pure Trophies. This guy and his team have put down a grip of bulls over the last 20 years, many of them over 300" and all on public land. It's hard to describe their level of consistent success, so I will direct you to their website and their YouTube to see for yourself the caliber of bulls these guys consistently connect on. I have hunted similar country where they find success and most people will not kill a bull there, let alone pass on any opportunity when presented with a hard earned shot. The brush bulls of Western Montana and parts of Idaho can make for frustrating hunting. The brush itself can prevent you from getting a clear shot, even when a bull is a mere 5 yards away. Binoculars are worthless in this country, any many folks will quickly grow tired of fighting the dense underbrush and steep terrain that these elk call home. The elk numbers are low and the country is in the heart of wolf country plus other predators. Ber and his four brothers have been pounding brush and slamming monster bulls for many years and they love the challenge. The team of brothers have captured a lot of their hunts on and put them on YouTube, I highly recommend you take some time and watch how they get it done. These guys are all animals and part forest ninjas, so we talk to Ber and learn his unique story on how he came to the States and found his passion elk hunting. "4 long years of being obsessed with these incredible animals and I finally connected with my first which happened to be this beautiful herd bull. I found this bull on the 11th and it took till Friday the 14th and 3 different setups solo to get him visible and within range. The moment after I shot was surreal. All the different thoughts left me speechless as I worked through what my next move would be. I decided to go get help. By the time I was heading back to trail this bull I had 7 guys coming with, all excited to share this moment with me. All helped me track this bull and eventually find him dead 200 yards from where I shot. The help I received from these guys was overwhelming as we stayed up all night getting this bull taken care of and packed out. My appreciation for everyone involved is greater than I can express. It was a long 8 days in the wilderness that tested me physically and mentally but eventually provided a gratification is greater than anything I’ve felt before. Patrick J. Walsh did not grow up in a hunting family, he has zero hunters in his circle of friends or colleagues. By day, he's an attorney and part owner of a local gym. How many East coast or Midwest hunters have still not made it out West to elk hunt? The answer is probably most. It can be extremely intimidating to plan an elk hunt from a logistical angle, let alone find somewhere good to elk hunt without really having the resources to put up trail cameras or scout ahead of time.
