Elk hunting in Washington State is very difficult. You have to choose which side of the state you want to hunt (East or West). Then you have to choose your exclusive weapon (Archery, Muzzleloader, or Rifle). Seasons are very short compared to other states out west. Draw odds are bleak for residents and nonresidents have to buy an elk tag/license just to be able to apply. There's a lot of room for improvement when it comes to managing the elk herds of Washington State. Today, we dissect their management systems and offer up a few solutions to the problem. Ron is an accomplished bowhunter, writer, editor and conservationist. He is active in his state bowhunting organization and with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. He has multiple Pope and Young entries from several states. For the past 20 years he has documented his adventures, writing for a variety of outdoor magazines and websites. He is the former editor and columnist for Extreme Elk Magazine. His first big game experience came when he was 19, bowhunting for the first time in Wyoming and harvesting a fork-horn mule deer. That solidified his passion for bowhunting. A few years later when he shot his first bull elk with a bow, a new obsession began. Ron is passionate about elk and is a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and served years as a committee member and then Chapter Chairman for a couple of years. He also served on an elk working group for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Ron is from Cody, Wyoming, married with one son, who served in the Air Force for 6 years including two deployments. There are roughly 80,000 elk hunters in Idaho - I'm asking you all to make this episode a priority. Around 600 wolves have been harvested in the last two years in Idaho and that's largely due to trapping. That may sound like a lot, but if you peel back some layers you'll see that 600 isn't enough to keep wolf numbers from growing. We're already ten times over objective in Idaho. We need more Sportsmen to put their precious hard earned dollars into trapping, which is a very expensive and time consuming proposition. If you're like me, having a young family prevents me from running a trap line and checking sets every 72 hours which is required by law. I don't own a snowmobile and I cannot break away to dedicate the necessary time to do trapping justice. Luckily, there's still a few trappers out there that are willing and able to put the hard work in...and we can join forces and help them recoup some of their overhead when it comes to trapping. Foundation for Wildlife Management is an organization that helps reimburse hunters and trappers for their expenses when it comes to a wolf hunting or trapping. Anywhere from $500-1,000 depending on the take method. This is not a bounty, this is purely a partial reimbursement.
