German court yet to decide on request for arrest warrant to issued for Steinhoff CEO, Markus Jooste

It still remains unclear how German Authorities will proceed in getting former Steinhoff CEO, Markus Jooste to trial following his no-show at a German court yesterday. Jooste was scheduled to appear before a German court for contravening foreign exchange regulations that saw investors losing more than 200-Billion rands. Concern over the number of learners who drop out of school

Government spent R1.4 million to retrieve Bester, Magudumana from Tanzania

Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi has shed more light on the costs involved in deporting back to the country convicted rapist and murder Thabo Bester together with her alleged accomplice, Dr Nandipha Magudumana. Motsoaledi says a total of 14 people were involved in ensuring the safe return of the pair totalling a cost of one-point-four million rand in hiring a charter flight. Motsoaledi has been briefing Parliament's Home Affairs Portfolio Committee on the Bester scandal. Intercape takes Police Minister to court over over failure to protect the company's buses from being attacked

Long-haul bus company Intercape is taking legal action Police Minister Bheki Cele for failing to implement a safety plan to prevent its buses from being attacked. The bus company says since it opened its first case on March 4, 2020, not a suspect arrested has been or prosecuted. It says a further 164 more criminal cases were opened still no response. President Ramaphosa finally appoints new SABC board after 6-month delay

President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially appointed the new SABC Board. In a statement released by the Presidency this morning, the president approved 12 names including former SABC head of News, Phathiswa Magopeni and former SABC journalist, Mpho Tsedu. Former National Youth Development Agency CEO, Khathutshelo Ramukumba has been appointed as Chairperson of the board. The fraud and corruption trial of former president Jacob Zuma and French arms company, Thales has been adjourned to August 15th by the Pietermaritzburg High Court. The trial has again been postponed for arguments related to Zuma's application to have lead prosecutor Billy Downer removed from the matter. The state has dropped charges of murder and arson against 65-year-old Zolile Sekeleni who is a father of Dr Nandipha Magudumana. The state has indicated that after investigations there is no evidence linking Sekeleni to those charges. He is expected to be back in court on the 16th of May. Dr Nandipha Magudumana, 3 co-accused remanded in custody

Convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester's girlfriend Dr Nandipha Magudumana will remain in custody while her father Zolile Sekeleni has been released on ten- thousand rand bail. The state says it will object bail for Magudumana and her two co-accused former G4s employee Senohe Matsoara and Teboho Lipholo. The case has been postponed to third and forth of May for bail application. In today's court appearance the prosecution requested that Magudumana remove her face mask and reveal her face to allow her to be properly identified by the court which she did. Home Affairs minister confirms Thabo Bester's identity

Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester did not register any identification with the department. Bester and his girlfriend, Dr Nandipha Magudumana were arrested in Tanzania last week and found with multiple passports. Both Bester and Magudumana have since appeared in court on different dates. Addressing the media in Pretoria, Dr Motsoaledi says intensive investigations are underway to determine how the pair managed to get the passports.

The case against convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester has been postponed to the 16th of May in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court. He is facing a string of charges including escaping from lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, violation of a dead body and fraud. Bester, together with his girlfriend Dr Nandipha Magudumana returned to South Africa yesterday morning, after their arrest in Arusha, Tanzania, last Friday. Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in the Free State, in May last year.

The High Court in Pretoria is currently hearing arguments challenging the Home Affairs Department's decision to terminate the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit. The Helen Suzman Foundation, Zimbabwean Immigration Federation, African Amity and 29 others are challenging the decision in court and seek to have the termination of the permits declared unlawful. Limpho Hani calls on ANC-led government to challenges faced by South Africans, many of whom live in abject poverty

Limpho Hani, the widow of late SACP general-secretary, Chris Hani has called on the ANC-led government to start paying attention to South Africans who are living in abject poverty, as the cost of living escalates. She was speaking at the 30th anniversary commemoration of her husband's death at Thomas Memorial Park in Ekurhuleni. Hani was killed by a Polish immigrant Janus Walusz on this day in 1993. Walusz failed to get parole on four occasions. However, the Constitutional Court later ordered that he be released on parole in December last year. Hani's widow says it is wrong to promise people basic services that cannot be delivered.

Independent power producer says it offered the excess electricity it produces to Eskom but the utility declined

Frankfort in the Free State has been experiencing less frequent load shedding thanks to an independent power producer in the area, Rural Maintenance. The company has been managing power distribution in the town for over a decade and was contracted by the Mafude Local Municipality. Through purchasing electricity from four local solar farms at a more affordable rate than Eskom, Rural Maintenance distributes power across the Mafube Municipality. Foiled Sebokeng cash-in-transit heist claims life of 9th suspect

The number of suspected cash-in-transit robbers who have died following a shoot-out with police in Sebokeng in the Vaal this morning, has risen to nine. Godongwana backtracks on decision to exempt Eskom from reporting on irregular expenditure

Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana has decided to withdraw the exemption of Eskom from the Public Finance Management Act. Godongwana appeared before Parliament's Standing committees on the Auditor-General, Finance, Public Accounts, Appropriations and the Public Enterprises Portfolio this morning. Section 194 parliamentary committee inquiry continues amid heated exchanges with committee chairperson

The Section 194 parliamentary committee inquiry into the fitness to hold office of suspended Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane kicked off once more today with flares and tension between committee chairperson Richard Dyantyi and Mkhwebane. This as the committee continues with its work despite objections from Mkhwebane following the withdrawal of her legal fees by the office of the public protector. In starting today's proceedings, Dyantyi had just finished acknowledging all those present when Advocate Mkhwebane got onto the virtual platform to seemingly alert the chair to an urgent letter written to the committee. Chairperson Dyantyi would not entertain Mkhwebane demanding she be muted from the virtual platform. Here is a snippet of how that exchange took place.

G4S legal representative tells committee the company would need to summon it to appear before it avails itself to account to the committee

Tempers flared earlier today as members of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services looked to get to the bottom of how Thabo Bester faked his own death and escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre. The convicted 'Facebook Rapist', murder and now fugitive sent shockwaves throughout the country following his escape in May last year. Its believed Bester set his own cell on fire with investigations later on revealing that the person found dead in the same cell had died from a blunt force trauma to the head prior to the fire. Lawyer of G4S Security Company which runs the facility in which Bester escaped from, Ben Winks told the committee it would need to summon it to appear before they make themselves available to account to the committee.
