Is it a good idea to fall asleep to music?

Many of us have a ritual of falling asleep to our favorite tunes or a comforting podcast. It’s no surprise we find solace in this routine; after all, music is known to dial down blood pressure and heart rate, ease anxiety, and reduce cortisol levels. The benefits don’t stop there – music can also boost oxytocin production and sweep away those pesky negative thoughts, setting the stage for a peaceful night’s rest. For those battling chronic pain, melodies can be a balm, offering a more tranquil slumber thanks to music’s proven pain-dulling powers. In fact, the innovative Music Care app, developed by Dr. Stéphane Guétin, even lets healthcare providers prescribe tunes as a form of pain management. What’s the best soundtrack for slumber? Does a musical bedtime routine make a difference? Are there any potential pitfalls to this melodic method? And what about falling asleep with the TV on? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Are additives bad for your health?

According to The Sun, scientists say that “the average person in the UK now consumes more than eight kilograms of chemical additives every year.” Of course with that being an average figure, it can shoot up even further for those who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods. If you’ve ever looked closely at ingredients lists on the packaging of food you buy in your supermarket, you’ll have noticed the E numbers by which additives can be recognised. Each category has its assigned E numbers. For example, colours are in the 100s, preservatives in the 200s and antioxidants in the 300s. Aren’t additives banned? What are they actually used for? Where does our phobia of clowns come from?

Clowns are supposed to make you laugh, but often can make you shudder. What is supposed to be a figure of fun is for many the stuff of nightmares. Coulrophobia —the irrational fear of clowns that’s surprisingly common. This has been reinforced by popular culture, and many horror film-makers know that a scary clown is the perfect recipe for thrills, resulting in them becoming an icon of terror. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology in February 2023 surveyed 900 individuals, revealing that 53% experienced clown-related fear. Participants pinpointed clown makeup as the primary source of discomfort, with its distortion of human features creating an air of menace. Unable to discern true emotions behind the painted facade, people feel unsettled by the clown’s unpredictable antics. The Science Behind the Fear What exactly is so unnerving about clowns? Why is black associated with grief?

A funeral is one of those rare occasions where you don’t really need to think too much about your choice of outfit. After all, everyone wears black to funerals as a sign of grief, don’t they? Well, that might be true in the Western world, but it’s not necessarily the case everywhere, which is what we’re going to talk about today. In the Western world, funeral customs have long been intertwined with strict dress codes. The tradition of "mourning attire" became widespread across Europe from the Middle Ages onwards, and was particularly stringent during the Victorian era in England. Queen Victoria herself mandated that widows wear black mourning attire, including jewellery, for at least a year. Has that always been the case? What about in other parts of the world then? How quick is premature ejaculation?

According to the British Association of Urinological Surgeons, somewhere between 20 and 30% of men experience premature ejaculation. But of those men, less than a quarter actually seek medical advice. That’s despite it being an issue that often takes a toll psychologically on the man and the relationship they have with their partner. If it's always been an issue, it's termed primary premature ejaculation; whereas if it occurs after a period of normal ejaculation, it's called "secondary." Why do men often wake up with an erection?

A lot of people think that morning erections are triggered by erotic dreams, or a need to pee, but in fact they're a physiological reflex linked to sleep. That’s right - they’re not dependent on sexual arousal at all. And in a somewhat similar way, women actually also experience increased blood flow to the clitoris during the night. Now, the scientific term for a nighttime erection is nocturnal penile tumescence, or NPT for short, and men get a few each night on average. They occur during REM sleep phases, which make up around 20% of total sleep time. What exactly is REM sleep? Are you saying it’s an involuntary reflex then? Is the gut really our "second brain"?

You have surely felt butterflies in your stomach before a big event or had a ‘gut’ feeling about something. You might even say you need to ‘digest’ some big news. Our stomach is sometimes dubbed the ‘second brain’ and it's more than just a metaphor. The term gained traction in the West in 1999, thanks to Dr. Michael Gershon’s book “The Second Brain.” However, the concept isn’t new. Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient Indian healing system, has recognized the gut-brain connection for thousands of years. In Ayurveda, the digestive system and the mind are intertwined; a disturbance in one affects the other. This link is embodied in the concept of Agni, or ‘digestive fire,’ which pertains to both physical digestion and the processing of emotions and thoughts. Nourishing our Agni with the right foods can make us feel better, both physically and mentally. Where did this idea originate? Is there scientific backing for this brain-gut connection? Caring for yourself involves more than just tending to your nails; it's about making sure they're well-groomed, especially those on your toes. Trimming them properly is also key to avoiding painful ingrown nails, but on the other hand going overboard with your clippers can cause problems too. So let’s discuss how to find the right middle ground. According to the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the best tool for the job is either nail clippers, which are lever-style cutters, or nippers, which have more of a plier style. It may be easiest to cut your nails after you’ve had a bath, shower, or footbath, as they’lll be slightly softer as a result. What’s the best cutting technique then? What is the 12 week method for achieving your goals?

Every January, many of us set ambitious resolutions for the year ahead. We jot down our aspirations, fueled by goodwill, and promise ourselves that this time, we won’t give up after just a month. But somehow, as the year unfolds, our motivation wanes, and those once-clear goals seem increasingly elusive. If you’re tired of this cycle, it might be time to consider a fresh approach: the twelve-week method. Imagine achieving all your goals within just three months. Sounds challenging, right? But fear not! The Twelve-Week Method, also known as the “Twelve-Week Year,” emerged from a personal development book published in 2013 by American entrepreneurs Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington. Drawing on their experience as managers in major international companies, they designed this method to boost productivity while preventing burnout during periods of low motivation. Coffee purists tend to look down on the likes of the latte, cappuccino and mocha, suggesting that only black coffee is the real deal. Which foods will help you get a good night's sleep?

Here at Do You Really Know, we’ve talked over and over again about the importance of getting good quality sleep. So of course, you don’t want your evening meal to disrupt it, and that’s a cause of uncertainty for many people. Bear in mind that to drift off to sleep, your body temperature needs to gradually drop. Given that digestion tends to raise our body temperature, that poses quite the conundrum. Now, the richer the meal or the heavier the food you eat, the longer it takes to be digested, which can lead to discomfort like reflux, heaviness, or bloating. Could the five-minute coffee check-in save your relationship?

Feeling disconnected from a partner is a common problem in romantic relationships. According to a survey by McCain Foods in 2018, it affects 60% of all people in a relationship. Even worse, 15% of respondents admitted to spending more time interacting with celebrities on social media than with their partner. This sense of disconnection often stems from a lack of communication within the relationship. So today we’re going to tell you about a technique that may just help in that respect: the “five-minute coffee check-in”. Indeed Aston Simmonds, the Australian relationship coach who created it, credited it with saving her from divorce. What exactly does the "coffee check-in" entail? What is quiet hiring?

After the emergence of ‘quiet quitting’, it's now the turn of quiet hiring. And although the term is relatively new, the practice is not. The term "quiet hiring" first appeared in the report "9 Future of Work Trends for 2023" published at the end of 2022 by Emily McRae, a philosophy professor in New Mexico, USA. She explains that this phenomenon follows on from the quiet quitting craze that emerged in 2021 after the Covid-19 pandemic which saw a huge wave of resignations sweep the country with nearly 4 million people quitting their jobs every month during this period. Quiet quitters complain that their workload was too heavy for their salary and that Managers were unclear about their tasks or workload, rewarding best performance and thus pushing them to work more. Where does it come from? But what does this have to do with quiet hiring? But doesn't that open up more opportunities? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! What is a kakistocracy, in the world of work ?

We spend a good deal of our time at work, 35 hours a week or more. It's an integral part of our lives, so if you can it's always best to surround yourself with good colleagues. They make work not only more enjoyable but stimulating. Their support and collaboration also helps to create a positive environment where teamwork leads to tackling problems and finding solutions. However, when we don't get along with our co-workers, time moves slowly, worse still is when you find yourself compensating for their shoddy work or having to work around them. But by far the worst situation is when the problem of incompetence comes from above. This situation has a name: the working environment becomes a kakistocracy. What does it mean? More recently, a widely-cited estimation from the early 2000s suggested there were 28 million regular chewers in the United Kingdom, making Brits the second biggest consumers of gum in the world! What threat does the Year 2038 problem pose to our computers?

Millennials - how well, if at all, do you remember the Y2K bug hype? Back in the 1990s, everyone was freaking out about computers crashing when the clock struck midnight on January 1st, 2000. That was because when computers were first built back in the mid-20th century, they stored years with only two digits instead of four, due to memory limitations. It was feared that when the clock ticked over from '99' to '00' in the year 2000, computers wouldn't recognise the new century and might revert to '1900'. In the end, it turned out to be much ado about nothing - the widely predicted chaos didn’t materialise. But fast forward two decades later, and some people say we're looking at another potential computer meltdown on January 19, 2038. And at 3 hours, 14 minutes and 7 seconds past midnight, to be precise. Why is 2038 the new date to watch out for? Is there any way to avoid this? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Why do people say the soul weighs 21 grams ?

A small chocolate bar. A tablespoon of honey. A hummingbird. Those are a few different things that weigh around 21g. And you can add the human soul to that list, according to the 21 grams experiment from the early 20th century. That’s right; while there’s no scientific evidence that the soul even exists, a theory emerged not only suggesting that it does, but also putting its weight at the figure of 21g. The 21g figure comes from research by British doctor Duncan MacDougall. His observations led him to believe that at the moment a person dies, they lose exactly 21 grams in weight. And he was also convinced that if the soul exists, it must have a weight, just like any other physical matter. How did a theory like that come about? How well was the experiment received? Why are some people constantly sexually aroused ?

The condition we’re going to talk about today is pretty rare. It affects around 1% of women, but it can really disrupt the lives of those who suffer from it. Persistent genital arousal disorder, or PGAD for short, was officially identified by the medical community back in 2001, when Sandra Leiblum and Sharon Nathan published an article about it in The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. At the time, they called it persistent genital arousal syndrome, and identified five specific criteria for diagnosis. These were then expanded by the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health in 2021. According to that organisation, PGAD refers to “persistent or recurrent, unwanted or intrusive, distressing sensations of genital arousal”. It is “most commonly experienced in the clitoris but also in other genito-pelvic regions” and “may include other types of genito-pelvic dysesthesia” like buzzing, tingling, burning, twitching, itch or pain.” The minimum duration for a diagnosis is 3 months. Why are we afraid of the dark?

Fear of the dark is very common for children and usually starts between the ages of 5 and 10. At this age, children become more aware of the dangers around them. However, they often have difficulty correctly assessing just how real these dangers are. Usually, this fear disappears naturally as children gain confidence and grow up, but in rarer cases it may persist into adulthood. Principally, it is because darkness alters our main sense of reference: sight. This sense has taken over from the others, and human beings are particularly helpless in the dark. Not being able to see what's around us generates a feeling of insecurity. So, deprived of sight, the imagination runs riot, and our brains fill in the void with monsters under the bed! Folk tales, fairy tales and legends often reinforce this, conveying the idea that the dark is the playground of evil creatures. Why do we fear the dark ? Has it always existed ? What’s the difference between fear and phobia ? How can you overcome your fear ? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Why do we get moles?

The number of moles we have on our bodies largely depends on sun exposure. They can pop up between your toes, on your scalp, on your earlobes or under your nails-anywhere really. Rest assured, most of the time these small brown spots are completely harmless, but still it’s worth knowing some key info about moles. That's especially true given they can sometimes be cancerous, turning into a type of skin cancer called melanoma. Why do some people need to sleep more than others?

As the years go by, we're getting less and less sleep. A survey by Chemist4U in 2022 found that Brits get just 6 hours and 10 minutes of sleep per night on average. Economic stress and the overwhelming demands of modern life have been blamed for this, but there’s no real evidence to back that up. Still the fact remains that not getting enough sleep can significantly impact our daily lives, so it’s a source of real frustration. Doesn’t everyone need eight hours then? Why are young people going back to flip phones?

Flip phones or ‘dumb’ phones as they are sometimes called are making a comeback but you might be surprised to know that it's gen Z, in other words people born between 1997 and 2010 and not your grandparents who are buying them. Well unlike smartphones, the dumb phone can only make phone calls or send text messages and with only twelve buttons and no predictive text dumbphone users get straight to the point. People like them because of their vintage appeal, but above all it meets a need to disconnect. At a time when we're constantly on our smartphones, the return to basic dumbphone functions seems to offer a breath of fresh air and a well-deserved break in our hyper-connected world. What are the strangest reactions caused by an orgasm ?

Having an orgasm triggers a cascade of physiological responses, including the tightening of muscles in the pelvic and genital regions, and the release of various hormones and neurotransmitters. It sets the heart racing, ramps up breathing, and sends blood rushing to the penis or clitoris, causing them to become erect. Of course reaching orgasm isn’t guaranteed. Before it happens, there's typically a sequence of desire, arousal, and plateau. An orgasm is marked by intense muscular contractions in the genital area and a profound sense of pleasure. Sometimes, this climax can lead to intriguing reactions. What's behind the pleasure of an orgasm then? What other reactions are possible? What about spasms or tremors?
