Why do we get memory lapses?

According to research published in The BMJ in 2002, around 40% of people experience some age-associated memory impairment after reaching 65. Thankfully only 1% of those affected will then go on to have dementia each year. But still, it’s important to be aware of how effective your memory is, whatever your age. An impairment can be a sign of cognitive decline, which becomes more likely the older we get. How does our memory actually work? What happens when we have a memory lapse then? How often should I wash my towels?

Towels, used to dry our freshly washed bodies, quickly become dirty, collecting dead skin cells, perspiration, bacteria and fungi that thrive in damp environments. This can lead to fungal infections and skin problems. To manage this, use separate towels for the body and face, and ensure they are thoroughly dried between uses to minimise bacterial growth. Experts recommend washing towels at a high temperature, ideally 60°C or above, to effectively eliminate bacteria and fungi. Lower temperatures, such as 30° to 40°, are only effective on light stains and may not fully sanitise the towels. Over time, the accumulation of microbes makes thorough cleaning more challenging. How should you wash your towels? What are the best cleaning tips for toothbrushes? What about make-up brushes? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Are you spending more on groceries due to stretchflation?

The subject of today’s episode is the latest questionable practice in retail. "Stretchflation" is getting a lot of attention, and for good reason: it's yet another way to squeeze more money out of consumers. We’ve already talked about shrinkflation on Do You Really Know, which is when you see product sizes reduced but prices stay the same. Since the start of the cost-of-living crisis, we’ve also seen cheapflation, which involves cutting out expensive, high-quality ingredients, and greedflation, which saw food companies hike prices far above the rise in their costs, using inflation as justification. How does stretch-flation work then? Talk about misleading! Is looking at the price per kilo the way to go then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Can you really lose weight by walking?

Walking is something we all do every day, but did you know it has numerous health benefits? It’s not just a simple way to get from point A to point B; walking can improve cardiovascular health, boost your mood, and even enhance your overall well-being. According to specialists, it can also help you lose weight under certain conditions. By incorporating regular, brisk walks into your routine, you can take advantage of these benefits and work towards your weight loss goals. First, you need to walk enough. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 10,000 steps a day to stay fit and maintain a stable weight. But if your goal is to lose weight, you’ll need to walk more and at a higher intensity. To really shed those pounds, aim to walk at least three times a week for an hour or more at a brisk pace (between 6 and 8 km/h) and maintain a heart rate between 135 and 160 beats per minute. So, what are those conditions? Is that enough to lose weight? Is one type of walking more effective than another? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Could mate poaching be a threat to your relationship?

All romantic relationships come with challenges, and one of the biggest hurdles tends to be fidelity. Over the years, there have been a number of studies on the prevalence of cheating, but it’s tricky to know how reliable data from those studies is. After all, it relies on people owning up to unfaithful behaviour. Generally speaking though, surveys from the likes of YouGov have suggested that around one in five people in the UK have had an affair at some point in their life. Why don’t these mate poachers just look for someone who’s actually available? Is there any way to spot a “mate poacher”? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! How do you get rid of fruit flies in the kitchen?

These tiny insects, which reproduce at an astonishing rate, often invade our kitchens. They are particularly attracted to damp areas, stagnant water, organic waste, and ripe fruit—especially in warm weather. Fruit flies, or midges, can lay up to 100 eggs a day. While studies indicate that flies can carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites, the midges in our homes are generally harmless. They can transmit bacteria and minor food-borne viruses, but rarely cause serious diseases. This is reassuring, but it doesn’t mean we want them around! So, how can you get rid of them? What to do when you’re exhausted after your holidays?

It may come as a surprise, but for some, summer isn’t always a time for rest and recharging. Quite the opposite, in fact. This phenomenon, known as “mid-year crisis” or “summer burnout,” is a type of seasonal depression that occurs during the summer months. According to The Guardian newspaper, symptoms include drowsiness, lack of appetite, decreased libido and energy, and a general feeling of being overworked and tired. These feelings can occur during or after vacations, even after a period of rest. It's as if the positive effects expected from a holiday were totally ephemeral. Worse, some people feel more sensitive and irritable than before their break. What are the symptoms? How do you explain this seasonal crisis? What is the coffee cup test in job interviews?

Job interviews have always been a daunting prospect for a number of reasons. And the process is only getting more time-consuming for candidates, without offering increased chances of success. According to a June 2023 report from the Josh Bersin Company and AMS, the average recruitment process now take a whopping 44 days. As if all this isn’t demanding enough, interviewers like to throw in the occasional curveball too when meeting candidates. One such example is the coffee cup test, which gained attention in 2019 after a man called Trent Innes, then Managing Director of Xero Australia, appeared on The Venture Podcast with Lambros Photios to discuss his hiring strategy. Why do women live longer than men?

In the period from 2018 to 2020, the life expectancy at birth for women in the UK was 82.9 years, while it was just 79 for men. That’s according to data from the Office of National Statistics. And that disparity is a common trend across various countries and even among certain other species of mammals, like great apes. There certainly are, and they span both biological and behavioral factors. Dr. Perminder Sachdev is a professor of neuropsychiatry at the University of New South Wales in Australia. Talking to Time.com for an article published on the subject in 2019, he highlighted that men are more likely to take “life-threatening risks” which could lead to them dying, in a fight for example, or a car accident resulting from driving too fast. Is the sugar in fruit actually good for you?

Just like vegetables, fruit is essential in a healthy and balanced diet. Ever since the UK government’s campaign in 2003, we’ve all known that we’re supposed to get our “five a day”. And a lot of fruit tends to be pretty sweet, especially when ripe. That’s because fruit contains sugar, and more specifically a large amount of fructose with little glucose. The problem with fructose is that it easily converts into fat in the liver. For the same quantity of fructose and glucose, fructose will produce more fat in the liver. And that can have a significant effect on metabolism. If consumed in large amounts, it could lead to hepatic steatosis, or fatty liver, a phenomenon that is increasingly common with obesity. What is fructose ? Is fructose better than glucose for health ? Should we be avoiding fruit ? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! How can I recognise ultra-processed foods?

What do chicken nuggets, margarine and instant noodles all have in common? Well, they may look tasty, but they’re loaded with sugar, salt, fat and chemicals that strip away their nutritional value. That’s due to the heavy processing that goes into making them, which sees them completely transformed from the original raw ingredients. And they’re increasingly ever present on our shelves and in our stomachs. In 2022, the National Institute for Health and Care Research found that ultra-processed foods made up almost two-thirds of Britain’s school meals. Furthermore, the British Medical Journal has reported that ultra-processed foods account for 56.8% of total energy intake in the UK diet. How should I organise my fridge?

You might be the kind of person that meticulously fills your fridge with your groceries ensuring that every item is in the correct spot or perhaps you just shove them in wherever there is space but there is actual science behind how to best fill your fridge to keep things fresh and avoid waste. But everything you thought you knew may no longer be valid as the UK food authority has just updated its advice on a number of foodstuffs and where they should be stored so it might be time to refresh your fridge organisation. The most significant change is regarding potatoes. For as long as I can remember the advice regarding raw potatoes was to store them in a cool dry place but not the fridge. This was to stop something called “cold sweetening”, from happening. What has changed when it comes to storing food? What else should I know about storing food? What should not be refrigerated? Could tourism quotas help preserve endangered local environments?

It’s worth bearing in mind that overtourism has become a real nuisance. As tourists, it’s not exactly fun being in a highly overcrowded area, but it’s even worse for the natural environment. Could tourism quotas be one way of addressing the problems? In mid-June 2022, the island of Corsica brought in quotas for three iconic sites: the Bavella needles, the Restonica valley and the Lavezzi islands. 180,000 tourists visit these sites each year, a figure which is expected to rise to 200,000 by 2026. Tourists will now need to make advance reservations online in order to visit them, with parking spots also limited. What are the biggest misconceptions on beating heatwaves?

According to a World Meteorological Organisation report from May 2023, it’s now more likely than not that global temperatures will surpass the key milestone of 1.5°C warming. This is of course down to human-related greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the El Nino weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which was confirmed to have started as of early June. Of course the long term impact of such warming is expected to be catastrophic, but even in the short term it means that all of us are faced with increasingly frequent heatwaves, the likes of which saw temperature records broken across the UK in July 2022. What are 3 sex tips to give your relationship a boost?

You might or might not be surprised to learn that warm weather naturally enhances the libido. According to a 2022 survey by the Kinsey Institute, 60% of Americans report that spring is the season when they most want to get under the duvet with their partner. It all comes down to hormones. Light and warmth naturally stimulates our serotonin production, a mood-enhancing chemical. Additionally, it also increases testosterone production, a key player in libido. Light also activates the pineal gland, which regulates our sleep-wake cycles, further improving our mood. As a result, we become more pleasant and engaged in our relationships with others. Why is this? So how do you boost your libido when the weather is not good? What's the second tip? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! You might feel like money saving methods simply won’t ever work for you. But let's go back to basics. A simple Japanese technique called “kakeibo” could just revolutionise your relationship with money. The word “kakeibo” roughly translates as "household expense book". It refers to a notebook where you list your income and expenses, divided into several categories. But there’s a purpose behind all of it, of course, which is being able to save money you otherwise wouldn’t. Where does this method come from? And why would it work better than other techniques? Does sleeping next to someone improve sleep quality?

Have you ever cursed your luck at having a partner who snores, or spends the whole night tossing and turning in bed? It can be tempting to consider abandoning them to go and sleep on the sofa instead. Evidence suggests that sleeping next to someone does indeed have a pretty significant impact on adults’ sleep, whether that’s a partner, family member or even a pet. Researchers from the University of Arizona looked into the matter, and published the results of their study in Sleep journal in June 2022, under the title Bed Sharing Versus Sleeping Alone Associated with Sleep Health and Mental Health. What is bae-realing, the new dating trend?

Ever since social media came along, dating trends have evolved constantly. They tend to reflect changes in society too. In previous episodes of Do You Really Know, we’ve talked about dawn dating, sneating and ghosting for example. There are so many different terms out there, and not all of them are positive. Here’s another one you may have heard of recently, in particular if you’re single and use dating apps; bae-realing. You might have started to feel like all these manufactured dates aren’t natural, that they’re unwholesome. If that’s the case, you may well be seduced by the authenticity and even radicalism of bae-realing. It’s been called “a breath of fresh air” by Stylist magazine. Where does the name come from? What is the No Bra movement?

For women, wearing a bra to support their breasts may seem vital from puberty onwards. However, it’s claimed that bras may in fact be useless or even dangerous, which has led some to promote the No Bra movement. It has been linked to feminism, and isn’t universally accepted or popular. Bras were invented at the end of the 19th century, gradually replacing corsets and revolutionising women’s daily lives. Since then, wearing the undergarment has become an automatic reflex and a rite of passage for girls when they start to develop into young women. In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Why are some deadly diseases re-emerging?

If you're not up to date with your vaccinations, it might just be time to schedule an appointment with your doctor! When it comes to the diseases we’re going to be talking about today, you could be forgiven for thinking they were a thing of the past, consigned to history. But believe it or not, some of them are making a comeback in the 21st century. Their resurgence can be partly explained by a false sense of security; basically we thought they were eradicated for good and let our guard down. As a result, vaccination rates fell, and preventive measures were relaxed. What kind of diseases are we talking about? Did those diseases never really disappear then? What is the Dunning Kruger effect, the phenomenon that causes overconfidence?

Charles Darwin once wrote that “Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge”, and real-life situations which reflect that are all too common. To cite just one prominent example, in January 1995, American men MacArthur Wheeler and Clifton Earl Johnson were arrested after carrying out coordinated bank robberies in the state of Pennsylvania. Incredibly, they didn’t bother wearing masks, as they believed that rubbing lemon juice on their faces would make them invisible to security cameras. Actually no, but bear with me; I’m getting there. The case got a lot of media coverage, and piqued the curiosity of social psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger at Cornell University. They wanted to know how on earth someone could be so damn sure of themselves while believing something completely stupid. Where does this effect come from? Is that what the Dunning and Kruger effect is then? What are the consequences of the Dunning Kruger effect? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! What are the strangest events at the Olympic Games?

The Olympic Games are known for their records, unforgettable stars, and moments that will forever be remembered. But (because there’s always a but), they’ve also hosted some truly bizarre events. These oddities, which did little to enhance the Games’ reputation, have largely been forgotten by history. We’re here to remind you of them in this episode! Let’s start with the 1900 Games in Paris, which undoubtedly take the gold medal for the most absurd events. It’s hard to fathom what the organisers were thinking, but this year deserves its own ranking. For instance, spectators witnessed a 200-metre swim with obstacles, reminiscent of an obstacle course in Koh-Lanta, and even a poodle-shearing event. What about the most absurd event of 1900? What's the ideal temperature to stay healthy at home?

The World Health Organisation suggests that 18° C is the perfect temperature to set your heating to, but in reality that is just an average. There are a number of variables to take into account. For example, certain rooms might need to be heated more than others. And generally speaking, when we’re away from home or sleeping at night we can turn the heating down or off completely. That’s right, it can depend on age and medical conditions like thyroid problems for example. Where a certain temperature might be comfortable for some, for others it might be less bearable. Why is French the official language of the Olympics?

It may seem surprising that French is the official language of the Olympic Games, given that it’s ‘only’ the 5th most spoken language in the world. According to a report by the International Francophone Organisation in 2022, there are an estimated 321 million French speakers in the world, putting it behind Spanish, Hindi, Mandarin, and English. Nevertheless, the French language has played a significant role at a global level, and in various spheres, since the Middle Ages. Let's explore the importance it’s taken on since the modern Olympic Games were established in 1896. Did France play any role in creating the Olympics? Is that the only reason? How can I stop micro-awakenings from disrupting my sleep?

According to a Direct Line Group study from 2022, over 70% of UK adults don’t get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Nighttime micro-awakenings are a common contributing problem. For many of us, they happen four to six times per night without us even noticing. And they usually just mark the end of a sleep cycle. But they’re more common in some people, and can be down to various factors like anxiety, mental hyperactivity, asthma, acid reflux, or arthritis. The effects of caffeine, tea, alcohol, and tobacco should also be considered. And it’s important to know that as you age, your production of sleep hormone melatonin decreases. Why are the Olympic Games held every 4 years?

Here we are, seven years after the announcement by the International Olympic Committee, the Paris Summer Games are about to begin! And for the first time since World War II, the usual four-year gap between the Games was disrupted, as the Tokyo Games were postponed to 2021 due to the global pandemic. In fact, this tradition of holding the Games every four years goes back a very long way and was not introduced by chance; it even has a name: the Olympiad. It’s a common misconception, but the term “Olympiad” actually refers to the four-year period between the Games, not the Games themselves. While “Olympiads” in the plural can denote the events, “an Olympiad” in the singular specifically marks the interval between two editions. This distinction has sparked debates in literary and academic circles for decades. Doesn’t the Olympiad refer to the games themselves? So why was there a 4-year period in ancient times? And why are they still going on? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Why do some people believe in ghosts? How can I relax my brain while on holiday?

Whether you're lounging on a beach, exploring a new city, or simply taking a break from your daily routine, finding ways to calm your mind while on holiday is really important for our mental and physical health. We often promise ourselves we’re going to disconnect from day one, but it's not as simple as that. After all, when we’re at work our brains are constantly processing information, making decisions, solving problems, and dealing with stress. What are the world's least safe travel destinations?

In past episodes of Do You Really Know, we’ve talked about the best holiday destinations in the UK and abroad, as well as how to find the most budget-friendly options. Today though, we’re going to talk about security. The idea of visiting many countries all over the world is enticing, but it's important to remember that some destinations are significantly more dangerous than others. Rather than making decisions based on intuition, why not consider using guidance that’s actually based on facts and statistics. How long do I have to wait to swim after eating?

I’m sure at some point as a child on holiday you were told not to go swimming right after eating. Is Bedrotting bad for your health?

Whether it’s reading, journaling, enjoying breakfast, or scrolling through social media, these are just a few activities people indulge in while lounging in bed. For some, this has evolved into an art form, popularized by a viral TikTok trend known as “bed rotting.” This habit embodies a laid-back attitude, where productivity and responsibilities are momentarily cast aside in favor of a few minutes or hours of procrastination. Eleanor McGlinchey, a sleep psychologist at Manhattan Therapy Collective and Associate Professor of Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University, suggests that spending time in bed before starting the day can provide a sense of control over our time and lives. The same concept applies at night: we attempt to reclaim control over our day by lingering in bed before sleep, effectively delaying bedtime. This phenomenon, known as revenge bedtime procrastination, serves as a form of rebellion against our daily responsibilities. But what does this have to do with health? Could intentional inflexibility help you succeed at work?

Multitasking, or the art of juggling several tasks at once, is more common than ever before in the workplace. In 2022, a German think tank called Next Work Innovation released a study which showed that knowledge workers are interrupted on average every four minutes during the working day! In a past episode of Do You Really Know, we discussed how our brains manage to cope with multiple demands at once. Suffice to say: it’s not easy! It can be really tricky to focus again after a distraction, and many workers believe interruptions negatively impact their productivity and well-being at work.
