The Beat, The Scene, The Sound: More Than Just Music Article was written by Abdul Samibba If there's one name that resonates with New York City's vibrant house music scene and its rich tapestry of community work, it's DJ Disciple. In "The Beat, The Scene, The Sound: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth Of House Music in New York City," authors DJ Disciple and Henry Kronk intricately weave the story of house music with DJ Disciple's relentless efforts for his community in Farragut Houses. When The Beat Stops: DJ Disciple's Acts of Generosity It's one thing to play music; it's another to turn that platform into a force for good. DJ Disciple's annual 'DJs Against Hunger' event at Frank's Lounge is a testament to this spirit. This event is a showcase of electrifying beats and a beacon of hope for Brooklynites. Every cent from this event is channeled to the Brooklyn Community Housing and Services, ensuring shelter and essential resources for those in need. Watch this journey unfold here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOBYnFBHB3w&t=2s Nurturing the Next Generation The rhythm of DJ Disciple's efforts continues with music. He has consistently reached out to the young ones with his 'King in Me' event at PS 287. Sponsored by the Church of the Open Door, this conference is a rally for boys, helping them discover their inner kings while introducing them to the world of DJing. Responding to Crisis with Resilience From Hurricane Sandy to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, DJ Disciple has been at the forefront, mobilizing aid and bringing awareness. When Covid-19 gripped the world, he took to the drums, played for a nearly empty church, and ensured the message reached far and wide through YouTube sermons. His response to George Floyd's murder was a raw, powerful rendition of "Rise Up" in 2020, voicing out for justice. Watch it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZGvb31Mzr8 Furthermore, his song "Courage And Sacrifice" paints the struggles of the less privileged, echoing their tales of resilience. Experience the emotion here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtpgCi6A3h8 Community Recognition and the Urgent Plea In 2021, the world recognized DJ Disciple's commitment as he was crowned "Parent Of The Year." 2022 further saw David Banks receiving the 'Above & Beyond' accolade for his community works during the Farragut – Fort Greene reunion. However, 2023 brought a pressing concern. Many families face uncertainty with the Navy Yard Madison Boys & Girls Club heading towards closure. A pivotal part of the community, this clubhouse's imminent shutdown has led DJ Disciple to raise a clarion call, highlighting the urgency through Amsterdam News. Know more about this pressing concern here. https://amsterdamnews.com/news/2023/05/04/navy-yard-clubhouse-closure-rally/ In Conclusion: An Ode to House Music and Humanity The Beat, The Scene, The Sound is far more than a chronicle of the mesmerizing highs and lows of New York City's iconic house music scene. At its heart, this book reveals the profound soul of a community and the boundless dedication of one individual—DJ Disciple—to uplift and celebrate that community. Through the pages, readers will embark on a journey that dances to the beats of hope, resilience, and a relentless love for the community that's as captivating as the most charming melody. DJ Disciple, a man of faith, was forced to balance his beliefs with his zeal for making music as he performed in clubs and searched for as yet unreleased music to spin on his WNYE-FM radio show, The Best Kept Secret. As he relied on international gigs to keep house music alive while facing violence, drugs, and social adversity in the U.S., DJ Disciple stayed committed. “I still didn’t want to rest on my laurels. I thought maybe I could push things even farther as a DJ, and I was terrified that if I let up, I would give up before I had reached my potential.” DJ Disciple continues to live a life devoted to learning, understanding, creating, and collaborating with his fellow musicians in search of the next sound.” - Booklist #djdisciple #thebeatthescenethsound

Tyrone Lowe Interviews DJ Disciple on The Legends. The Beat, The Scene, The Sound Book Preview *************************************************** The Beat, the Scene, the Sound follows DJ Disciple and his behind-the-scenes account of how DJs, promoters, fans, and others from diverse communities transformed house music from a DIY project into an international sensation amidst the tumult of 1980s and 90s-era New York City. The book unearths many untold stories of the era. When house music first rose to prominence in the 1980s, it brought people together—Palladium, Paradise Garage, Tunnel, Zanzibar, Studio 54, and other clubs were going strong. But as DJ Disciple established himself in the scene, he witnessed it shatter. During the crack-cocaine epidemic, he literally dodged bullets bringing his records to and from clubs at night. The HIV/AIDS epidemic and homophobia threw up fear-based partitions. Then, mayors worked to close the clubs. House music was pushed underground and then abroad to the UK and Europe. Disciple and many other DJs sought to regain a footing in the United States, but that only became possible with the rise of commercialized EDM. With dozens of interviews and historic photographs, The Beat, the Scene, the Sound shows what is possible when you bring people together and what can unravel when you split them apart. *************************************************** Quote reviews for the book: "No stone is left unturned as Kronk and Disciple dive deep into the factors that contributed to house music’s evolution " - Chick Who Reads Everything https://chick-who-reads-everything.com/2023/06/12/the-beat-the-scene-the-sound-a-djs-journey-through-the-rise-fall-and-rebirth-of-house-music-in-new-york-city-book-review/ "Already a top-seller in Amazon pre-sales and with global book signings locked and loaded, folks will soon be savoring the deepest story about dance/house music ever told. DJ Disciple Christmas Mix at Marthas December 23, 2022 with Prayer: Lord, we thank you for bringing us together once again and on the brink of the Christmas holiday. When people are out shopping for gifts, having events, or getting ready to greet families, we thank you that we give you this time of praise and thanks. We pray today for those in solitary confinement. Not just for those in the prison system, but for those who are confined in themselves. We pray for our goals and resolutions for the upcoming year we pray that you help us accomplish everything we couldn’t this year Even if we wasn’t close to any of them we pray for your strength and courage to not give up Please provide us with the essential things we need to achieve my goals We pray that you renew our strength and our spirit. Help us press and push on no matter the difficulty we face Remove any depressing and disruptive obstacles from our path. Help us stay focused and on our toes this coming year we commit our family and all that is dear to us to your care Help us keep my faith in you and not stray from your promise. We sometimes find it difficult to put on a happy face and celebrate because of the losses we have experienced and the struggles we are going through. Some of us have experienced the death of a loved one. Some of us have experienced a divorce or separation. Some of us have lost our health. Some of us have lost homes, livelihoods and friends. Some of us have loved ones who are dealing with life altering problems. Today we intercede on behalf of those who mourn the loss of a loved one, especially during the holidays. We pray you comfort them with your undeniable Presence. Please give them courage, so they can face one more moment, one more hour and one more day. Let them place their hope in the one whom we celebrate this season; the One Who swallowed “up death forever… and wipes away tears from all faces” (Isaiah 25:8). For those of us who know we cannot put off getting right with God. If you don’t know Jesus you cannot put off getting saved or rededicating Christ in your life. No more delay; Lord we pray that you give someone a reset. If someone does not believe in you, I pray that they say Lord Jesus come into my heart. Tired of doing my own thing. I’m tired of going my own way. I call you Lord I call you savior. I take your salvation. I give you my sin. God, I believe in you because I need hope. God hear the cry of the hopeless right now, Install hope in the heart and the mind. In Jesus' name. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
