Ep 95Bernd Mayländer - F1 Safety Car Driver [REWIND]
[RECORDED MAY 2021] In this classic episode, Oli, Matt, Callum, and Michael have a sit down with an F1 institution of over 20 years: FIA safety car driver Bernd Mayländer. Known best in most circles for leading the Formula 1 pack under a yellow flag, our panel dives into the mindset, experiences, and memories of Bernd’s daily activities. From safety car testing to his snack of choice in race control, Bernd shares it all. With two of the coolest company cars on the planet (with an Aston Martin Vantage and a Mercedes AMG GT R at his disposal), The Nerds are given some behind the scenes insight into his personal preference and just how far the safety car has come. Bernd also takes time to recount some of the harrowing scenes (such as Romain Grosjean’s famous crash in Bahrain) and dive into the mental focus required on race weekend (as well as what makes a safety car driver come to work and enjoy himself as much). As the talk progresses to Bernd’s racing achievements, he ends up taking a lap around memory lane in Callum’s racing time machine. Bernd recounts his experiences from endurance racing and a record-setting 100,000-mile drive. Ep 91F1’s Biggest Conspiracy Theories - Part 2
It's back by popular demand... The FormulaNerds are back together to discuss the second round of F1's Biggest Conspiracy Theories. In this week's episode, we have Cal, Oli, Sam, Grace and Oli's tinfoil hat. They discuss the biggest F1 conspiracy theories (Oli's hat doesn't contribute that much!) Grace starts off with possibly the biggest of them all: Was 2021 a complete fix? She takes us through the season and points out some of the more peculiar moments from the past season. She then puts forward three main questions. 1) Was it Liberty Media fixing the season? 2) Was it Netflix trying to get more drama? 3) Was it Michael Masi on Red Bull's payroll? Of course, the group disagrees! Then Oli tells the group about his theory surrounding Fernando Alonso and Crashgate. This follows on from Part 1 where the team discussed the huge Spygate scandal. Did Alonso know about the plan? Was Alonso the driving force of the whole plan? Who knows? What we do know is that the group discusses it at great length. Sam brings up a very, ahem, dodgy situation about the Ferrari engines. The Ferrari engine scandal was blasted across a lot of mainstream media, not just F1 new sources. Yet, no one knows the settlement or the outcome of the trial. Finally, Cal brings us to the very dubious world of money and sponsorships. Is F1 a major actor in a high-scale money laundering scam. Were some of the dodgier sponsorships we have seen over the years just a cover for even murkier financial activities? The gang hasn't shied away from talking about the most controversial conspiracies. It's not one to miss! Ep 90F1’s Biggest Conspiracy Theories - Part 1 [Recap]
- PART 2 COMING SUNDAY 23RD JAN - ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED JAN 2021 - On this episode, Oli, Callum, Will, and Matt put on their tin-foil hats to discuss some of F1’s biggest controversies. Will starts off the gang by relaying the story of the missing telemetry from Ayrton Senna’s 1994 Imola crash. Was this a deliberate manoeuvre by Williams or just an unfortunate circumstance that led to the loss of a great? Will guides us through the legal proceedings and the investigative findings of the FIA and local municipalities involved as well as paying tribute to the legend the sport lost in this mysterious crash. Matt actually did some research and delves into the Spygate fiasco of the 2007 formula one season. With Ferrari, Mclaren, and Renault all involved as well as some big names (including Jean Todt, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Ron Dennis), the tale turns to raise some very serious questions about the impartiality of the FIA and the governing bodies. With all the spying and illegal activity, it only feels fitting to have taken place in 007. Adding fuel to the conspiracy fire, Oli recounts the mysterious conditions surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s mysterious and all too convenient engine failure at the Brazilian Grand Prix. With Alonso and Hamilton not playing nice and getting along in the McLaren garage, did the FIA sacrifice sir Lewis’ hopes of a title as recompense for them competing in 2008? Did Kimi Raikkonen just get lucky with his championship that year or was more at play? Our panel lastly delves into the hotly contested debate about the 2016 champ Nico Rosberg’s first, last, and only drivers championship. Callum reminds us of the history between the two and the unusual outcome that season produced. Did Mercedes leadership and bosses play a role in the mysterious gearbox issue? In a shocking turn of events, the panel may even defend Nico the more is it discussed. Join us and relive all the drama and intrigue of the controversies that still plague the F1 community as a whole. Ep 88The Rules That Ruin F1
On this week's Podcast Oli, Callum, Sam, and Grace discuss the rules they believe ruin Formula 1. Firstly the gang start off with Callum's choice of changing tyres under a red flag. Yes, a very controversial one! The group go into depth about how F1 could change this rule to make it fairer for the other drivers who changed before the red flag. They also discuss whether it should just be scrapped entirely. Sticking with the red flag theme, Sam brings up one of his pet hates. That being, repairing the car under red flag conditions. Could it be deemed bad racing? As we know Michael Masi likes F1 to be a "motor race" so does changing parts under a red flag ruin the essence of a "motor race"? The group also talk about lapped cars being able to unlap themselves under a safety car. YES. We love discussing the controversial ones here on the 'Cut to the Race Podcast'. Oli comes up with a few controversial rules, Grace brings up her favourite meme from the season (#BottasPlaysBowling) and obviously, they all disagree about nearly everything. The group discuss many more rules, but we don't want to spoil it for you- that wouldn't be fun. It's not one to be missed, especially if you have a bone to pick with the rules of F1.
