Round 21 - The F1 São Paulo Grand Prix Review 2022
This week on the Cut to the Race podcast, Host Oli is joined by James M, Abby and Sam as the quartet dissect the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, held at the legendary Interlagos in Brazil + Oli plays quizmaster again as he tests the knowledge of the group. Will the trio fare as well as in previous weeks, or will they come up short this time? Arguably the race weekend of the season, each meaningful session provided action and surprises. From first-time pole-sitters to first time winners, there is simply no predicting what Interlagos might offer. Together, the panel discuss those highlights and major talking points. The action and subsequent surprises were helped with a sizeable side of drama, which will no doubt dominate headlines over the coming days and weeks. The third and final sprint weekend of the 2022 season, the festivities in Brazil were the best advert for the format that F1 has seen thus far. First, it produced the qualifying session of the year and perhaps the most popular pole position in recent memory. Changeable weather conditions caused chaos and confusion at Ferrari, George Russell set up his weekend perfectly by accident, and Haas acted quickly when it mattered most. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/a-red-flag-and-surprise-pole-position-in-the-sao-paulo-qualifying/ Then, tensions ran high between teammates at both Alpine and Aston Martin in the sprint, with penalties applied to guilty parties. Verstappen fell back whilst Hamilton surged through, and there was no shortage of quality wheel-to-wheel racing, and there was a small sign of things to come at Red Bull. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/sao-paulo-grand-prix-sprint-race-results/ The grand prix saw safety cars, diverging strategies and the Mercedes duo confirming their apparent renaissance. There was action throughout and drama aplenty. Verstappen and Hamilton came to blows again, Alpine grabbed the initiative in their battle with McLaren and fractures are starting to show at Red Bull. But the question is, how serious could the implications be? https://www.formulanerds.com/news/sao-paulo-grand-prix-race-results/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/perez-on-verstappen-it-shows-who-he-really-is/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/hamilton-you-know-how-it-is-with-max-as-pair-come-together-again/ -- Keep up to date with all the latest Formula 1 News @ www.formulanerds.com -- Follow Us: Facebook - www.Facebook.com/FormulaNerds Twitter - www.twitter.com/Formula_Nerds Instagram www.instagram.com/FormulaNerds -- For Advertising & Sponsorship Opportunities:- Email [email protected] Learn more about your ad choices. Round 20 - The F1 Mexico City Grand Prix Review 2022
On this week’s Cut to the Race Podcast, Oli is joined by Abby, James and Sam for their review of the Mexico City Grand Prix. Formula 1 headed to Mexico with both championships settled, but there is still plenty to play for elsewhere. Sergio Pérez and Charles Leclerc still locked in a close battle for second in the championship - with the former also hoping for a first-ever win on home soil - whilst Max Verstappen was looking for a record-breaking 14th victory of the season. The panel discuss the news that broke over the weekend, including Christian Horner and Red Bull's response to their penalty for breaching the cost cap and the team's boycott of Sky Sports, before taking on Oli's 'Confusing F1 Quiz', which featured some out-of-order questions and more driver-name switching to break Sam's brain. And then it was back to the track for the quartet. With Mercedes having shown some legitimate pace in the thin air of Mexico City and Ferrari having gradually lost their way, it would prove to be a 2021-esque battle between Red Bull and Mercedes. Did the former Constructors' Champions make the wrong decision on strategy? Was there a way for anyone to beat Verstappen? Where did the Daniel Ricciardo of old suddenly reappear from? And, of course, what were the panel's weekend ratings and who were their drivers of the day? -- Keep up to date with all the latest Formula 1 News @ www.formulanerds.com -- Follow Us: Facebook - www.Facebook.com/FormulaNerds Twitter - www.twitter.com/Formula_Nerds Instagram www.instagram.com/FormulaNerds -- For Advertising & Sponsorship Opportunities:- Email [email protected] Learn more about your ad choices. Mick Schumacher is yet to find himself a seat for 2023. The German has caused some financial headaches for Guenther Steiner and Haas, who have looked at several drivers who could replace Schumacher. However, Gene Haas said that it is Mick’s decision to see what he wants for the future. Will Schumacher stay on with Haas, or will we see someone else in the American seat? https://www.formulanerds.com/news/gene-haas-assesses-mick-schumachers-current-situation/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/steiner-schumacher-has-home-advantage-as-new-contender-emerges-at-haas-f1/ Pierre Gasly has finally made the right move? Saudi Arabia confirmed that they can host more F1 races. What does the trio make of this decision? Do we love this fast-paced circuit, or do we rather see it off the calendar? Also, there are set to be six sprint races, making the total number of races in a season 30 rather than just 24. Is this better than just increasing the number of Grands Prix per season, or will it prove to be too much to handle in a single weekend? https://www.formulanerds.com/news/steiner-more-sprint-races-better-than-expanding-the-f1-calendar/ Should F1 implement 'information' laps? After the delays in Singapore and Japan, the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers Association Alex Wurz suggested that F1 implement information laps. This comes after Lewis Hamilton’s comments who told his team that he can give better feedback if he is out on track for one minute rather than watching from a TV. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/gpda-formula-one-should-implement-information-laps/ Learn more about your ad choices. F1 News From The Nerds - 27th July 22
Welcome to News from the Nerds, the midweek news show by the FormulaNerds news team – Your essential F1 weekly news digest. Each week we bring you the Top 5 news stories from the past week. In today's podcast, Sam and Abby get together with James and Catherine to discuss the latest news surrounding the motorsport world, mostly Formula One. They kick off the podcast with a quick round-up of the events surrounding Ferrari and Sergio Perez in the French Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc took full responsibility for his crash which caused him a potential win, while Carlos Sainz insisted that the team is not “a disaster,” despite some controversial calls they’ve been making. Meanwhile, the Mexican blames the Virtual Safety Car for not putting his Red Bull on the podium. You can read more on this on: https://www.formulanerds.com/news/f1latestnews/championship-fight-is-pointless-if-mistakes-continue-leclerc/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/sainz-on-french-gp-we-are-not-a-disaster/ On another note, they took a look at sustainability in Formula 1, and so the discussion had to be topped off with Formula E which heads into Rounds 13 and 14 in London this weekend. They spoke about the future of the electric championship and what potential Formula One drivers can join in too, while having a look at Nyck De Vries, who seemed to found his feet in the all-electric series. Speaking of Nyck De Vries, who makes part of the Williams Drivers Academy, the Nerds took a look at possible prospects that can join the Oxford-based team for 2023 as Nicholas Latifi and Alex Albon edge the end of their contract in 2022. Read more on potential drivers on: https://www.formulanerds.com/news/jost-capito-two-talents-williams-next-year/. And while they touched on new beginnings, they also looked at the potential end of the F1 journey for drivers such as Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren, Sebastian Vettel with Aston Martin, and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. The discussion does not stop at the podcast, you can also get more insight into why these drivers might leave the sport soon on: https://www.formulanerds.com/news/ricciardo-give-me-a-winning-car-and-ill-win/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/rosberg-lando-norris-is-potentially-the-best-of-the-next-generation/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/could-hamilton-make-it-to-400-races/. Finally, to top it all off, the Nerds analyse Haas’ decision not to give Mick Schumacher any upgrades for Hungary and how the German is getting on in F1, following a series of disappointing performances. Get £150 off your purchase by visiting https://www.eightsleep.com/formulanerds/ This week, Oli is joined by Abby and Catherine to discuss the potentially last French Grand Prix. The trio discuss Ferrari, who looked to have a strong weekend but was all ruined by Charles Leclerc’s crash. They discuss who was truly at fault, Mattia Binotto’s team or the 24-year-old’s? They also point out the strategists’ confusion which caused Carlos Sainz a podium finish after he made a spectacular comeback from the back of the grid. They go on to compare the Lewis vs Max rivalry to that compared to Max vs Charles this year. Mercedes are not at the top of their game but they seem to be turning up the heat on Ferrari and Red Bull, especially after a double podium finish thanks to Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with a slight push from Toto Wolff. Finally, what happened to Sergio Perez this weekend, was the team to blame for his finishing position? And how about Daniel Ricciardo? Is he demanding too much from McLaren, who seem to have been working just fine with youngster Lando Norris? They discuss practice - particularly the fascinating wet Practice 3 - and Saturday's thrilling qualifying. Should George Russell have taken the risk of the dry tyres? How did Haas manage to lock out row three? It's been how long since Fernando Alonso was last on the front row? And, of course, they share their views on the race itself, including the charge through the field by Charles Leclerc, the return to form of Lewis Hamilton (or was he never out of form?), Carlos Sainz coming so close but yet so far again and where it all went wrong for Alonso. There were plenty of other under-the-radar performances - some good, some bad - to discuss up and down the field too, along with the pressing question: is the title decided already? Then, as is tradition, they conclude with their choices for Driver of the Day and race ratings.I t's a return to home soil (at least for most of us) in a fortnight's time with the British Grand Prix, so be sure to check our race review for the hugely popular weekend in Silverstone. Ep 129Round 8 - F1 Azerbaijan GP Race Review 2022
On this edition of the ‘Cut to the Race’ Podcast, Oli is joined by Sam, James P, and another new panellist, John, as they dissect the ‘usually a blockbuster’ Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. ** This episode is brought to you by EightSleep - Ready for better sleep? Eight Sleep users fall asleep up to 32% faster, reduce sleep interruptions by 40%, and get overall more restful sleep. Replace your mattress or just add the Pod technology to your existing mattress. Get £150 off your purchase by visiting https://www.eightsleep.com/formulanerds/ In this episode, the team cover the key talking points heading into the race, namely whether Nicholas Latifi’s days are numbered, and if Williams are soon to be with a new engine supplier. The debate over ‘Max Verstappen Racing’ and surging Sergio rumbled on, playing a big role in the narrative of surrounding the run up to the weekend. The agenda was heavily influenced by the ongoing struggle with porpoising. Is it a solely Mercedes problem, or is it wider than that? It dominated conversations during practice and on Saturday before, and after, the really important parts of the event. Once there, the team discuss the ever-entertaining qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which seems to almost guarantee at least one red flag. Was Stroll unlucky, is it is symptomatic of a larger problem for the driver? The panel share their views on the start of the race, the pain endured by Ferrari, and the impact it is, or isn’t yet, having on the championship. Can Ferrari claw it back, or is it already too late?It was an interesting weekend at McLaren. In the midst of widespread criticism, Daniel Ricciardo appears to have closed the delta between himself and the always impressive Lando Norris. The team didn’t have the easiest day from a driver-management perspective. Did they ultimately get it right, or did they get it wrong? In the episode, the team cover all the highlights from qualifying and the race, as well as wider conversations surrounding the sport, such as the long-term feasibility of the Monaco Grand Prix, and whether it should remain on the calendar with the current era of cars being so big and so heavy. Sergio Perez and the dynamics within Red Bull are on the agenda. Is he biting off more than he can chew, or are the team getting more than they bargained for, and what issues might that cause? But also, controversially, what might the Mexican have signed? Alex Albon, Mick Schumacher and Fernando Alonso feature for their own unique reasons before the team rounds up and with their drivers of the day and weekend ratings.
