Paul compares the Christian life to that of running a race. It’s an appropriate analogy because there is a starting line (when you accept Christ), a finish line (when you step from this life into eternity), and a prize at the end (heaven). Some have gotten off to a late start, others have had a slow start, and all of us have stumbled at some point along the race. But the only thing that matters is finishing well! In Philippians 3, Paul outlines three things to encourage us to run with endurance and to finish well.

Most people pursue things that bring them happiness or pleasure in this lifetime: accomplishments, awards, degrees, rank, money, likes and followers. But at the end of the day, nothing compares to knowing Jesus! In Philippians 3, Paul wrote about all his many accomplishments and accolades that he achieved in his lifetime, but he said it was all “rubbish” (dung) compared to the excellence of knowing Christ! Our human default is selfishness which leads to division. But in Philippians 2, Paul tells us that unity comes from humility, and humility comes from following the example of Christ. Sometimes we think that God is absent during our difficult circumstances. Paul was “in chains” in prison in Rome for preaching the Gospel, yet he wrote about how much joy he had! How can someone in prison have such joy? Answer: because his joy was in Jesus and he understood that, regardless of his circumstances, God was accomplishing His divine purposes. That is why Paul would write in Philippians 1:13, “my chains are in Christ.” In today’s study, Pastor Gary shares how we can have joy in our difficult circumstances too with the right eternal perspective.

When we come to faith in Jesus Christ, God does not abandon us. On the contrary, He sends His Spirit to dwell in us and abide with us to help us run the race with perseverance. Do you need prayer today? In Ephesians 3, Paul prays for Believers. He asks God for four things on our behalf: (1) that we would be strengthened spiritually, (2) that Christ would “dwell” in our hearts, (3) that we would comprehend the expanse of God’s love for us, and (4) that we would be filled with the fullness of God.
