On February 28th, 2006, Travis Dewayne Roberson went missing during a night out with friends on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas. They were celebrating Mardi Gras and the street, close to the University of Arkansas campus, was bustling. So, when Travis simply disappeared on his way to wait at a friend’s car, it’s hard to fathom how noone saw anything. Was there an accident? Was there a targeted attack on Travis because of the witness testimony he was set to make in the coming months? Sadly, the Roberson family is still asking themselves those same questions. Nearly 18 years ago, in early 2006, Nicholasville, Kentucky resident Amanda Lynn Hughes was reported missing. Tammy Jo Alexander had a hostile home life and, once she became a teenager, soon began running away in an attempt to escape the toxicity. She frequently hitchhiked across the country– sometimes with a friend but oftentimes alone. When she left for the final time, no one reported her missing. In the early morning hours of August 9, 1976, a truck driver discovered the bodies of a young man and a young woman alongside a rural road in Sumter County, South Carolina. Since no one came forward to identify the pair, they soon became known as the Sumter County Does. Fourteen-year-old Bill Comeans was a helper. Around 11pm on December 6, 1991 at the Austin, Texas I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt shop, 17-year-olds Eliza Thomas and Jennifer Harbison had just closed the cash register and, according to some customers who had gotten their frozen yogurt to go near closing time, were waiting on a couple of male customers seated at a booth to leave. The two girls had plans with Jennifer’s younger sister, Sarah, and another friend, Amy (both of whom were also at the yogurt shop waiting for Eliza and Jennifer to finish their shift) to have a sleepover. Instead of a fun-filled night together, however, a call came in concerning a reported fire at the ICBY store. When firefighters responded, they didn't just discover a fire; they also discovered the remains of four young girls. It turned into a case riddled with trials, convictions, and overturned sentences-- a case that still lacks closure.. Rodney Marks was only 32, but he had already earned so much respect as an astrophysicist. And he took his work seriously, signing up for multiple long stints at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, run by the National Science Foundation. A job assignment like this one was not for the faint of heart as it required working more than half a year in darkness and in an environment of such extreme temperatures that even a plane couldn’t land because its fuel would freeze. It also meant months of complete isolation from the outside world; so, when Rodney Marks fell ill, there were limited resources. When he died on May 12, 2000, it would be over five months before his body could be removed from the Antarctic continent and an autopsy performed. A full seven months after Marks passed away, autopsy results revealed the biggest shock of all—he had been poisoned. Andrea Knabel was a fixer. She cared about people and wanted desperately to help them. That help took the form of being mothering to her younger sisters, of defending those she called a friend, of reminding people of their own strength when facing tough times, of bringing laughter to brighten the darkest of days. Tiffany Valiante had just graduated from high school and was looking forward to attending Mercy College in the fall, where she had been awarded a volleyball scholarship. The night of July 12th, 2015, after a small disagreement with her parents, Tiffany wandered away from her parent’s home, leaving her cell phone behind. Immediately, her family began searching for her. In the early morning hours of July 13th, Tiffany’s uncle approached some police officers working a train accident. It was then that he learned there had been a victim of that accident–a young woman on the tracks who had been hit by the train. It was his niece, Tiffany. Her death was quickly ruled a suicide and the case was closed. However, Tiffany was found shoeless and only partially dressed; her shoes were later discovered some distance away yet her feet were clean. Could her death, instead, have been the result of foul play? It was Monday, December 16th, 1974. Henry Bedard, Jr. had gone right after school to buy a final Christmas present for his sister and was on his way home. Several people saw Henry on his walk back, even though he was not taking his normal route home. But he never made it home at all. When a group of young boys playing along the route stumbled upon a wallet and a bottle of perfume, they hid the items so they could return to the spot and get them later. In the early 70s, no fewer than six young girls were abducted from the streets of Washington, D.C. It was supposed to be a fun day at the park when Noema, along with her 3-year-old son, met both her 5-year-old daughter and her 8-year-old sister at the bus stop after school. She took the kids to get ice cream before heading to Bridgeton City Park in New Jersey on September 16th, 2019. The night of October 24, 1953, was a busy one in La Crosse, Wisconsin as La Crosse State College was celebrating homecoming weekend. Fifteen-year-old Evelyn Hartley had accepted a babysitting job for a local college professor and had just settled down to do some school work when the Rasmussen family had left her in the care of their 20-month-old daughter. But, when Evelyn didn't call her parents at 8:30 to check in with them as she had promised to do, her father grew concerned. Even more alarming was when he arrived at the Rasmussen home to find signs of an apparent break-in yet no sign of his daughter. What happened to Charles “Chuck” Morgan in the spring and summer of 1977 seems the stuff of nightmares— abductions (yes, plural), poison, fear so great that it involves the constant wearing of a bulletproof vest, spies, organized crime, coded messages, and finally… murder. When Chris Thompson approached his employer’s home around 9 am on the morning of August 15th, 2002 in the small town of Oak Level, Virginia, he expected his boss to step out of the home, ready to go with Chris to pick up the new business truck. What Chris discovered, instead, was that his boss, Michael Short, had been shot, seemingly as he slept on the couch in his garage. When police arrived at the scene, they found Michael’s wife, Mary, in the couple’s bed, had also been shot. The couple’s nine-year-old daughter, Jennifer, was missing. A search commenced for the missing child, an Amber Alert was created, and news stations flashed her picture-- all hoping that she would be found alive and well. As weeks passed, police explored various leads from a stalker, to a stranger, to a disgruntled customer, and even explored theories spawned by the rumor mill in hopes of solving the crime and bringing Jennifer safely home. Unfortunately, on September 25th, 2002, thirty miles away in Rockingham County, North Carolina, fragments of human remains were discovered that later were verified to be those of young Jennifer. She too had been shot. Who could have committed such a heinous crime and what was their motive, especially since money (around $600) remained on the kitchen counter inside the Short family home untouched? Will those who have information, as local law enforcement has indicated that they do, finally be willing to share the details they recall that could lead to justice?
