A custodian at Middletown High School in Middletown, New York, arrived to work just after 6 am on January 16th, 1986 only to find someone slumped over by one of the school's side-entrance doors; he immediately phoned local law enforcement. When police arrived, they discovered that the "someone" was only a child-- a child who had been violently and senselessly attacked. After his identity was discovered and an autopsy was performed, a full-scale investigation began. Despite strong efforts by law enforcement, nearly 37 years later we are still wondering how he got to the school, why he wasn't dressed for the weather, and (most importantly) who could have taken his life. When Prisma Peralta Reyes left for her lunchbreak on April 17th, 2019, she drove to meet up with an ex-boyfriend. However, the day (already bad due to an argument with a coworker) got even worse when another argument ensued with her ex. Rather than go back to work after lunch, Prisma proceeded to make several subsequent decisions that were either out of character or unexplainable. Lauren Dumolo was on a path to gain back custody of her daughter. After losing one of her two jobs due to cutbacks and additional personal trauma in early 2020, she was having to try even harder to gain back her financial stability. The Ammons family, including mother Latoya Ammons, her three children (two boys aged 7 and 9 and a girl, age 12– their names have never been released), and Latoya’s mother (Rosa Campbell) moved into a rental home located at 3860 Carolina Street in Gary, Indiana in November 2011. It seemed ideal for the family…but it wasn’t long after the Ammons moved in that bizarre things began happening. On May 24th, 1989, the body of 16-year-old Jessica Briggs was pulled from the waters of Casco Bay in Portland, Maine. For some time afterward there were no names suspects; that is, until law enforcement honed in on Briggs’ ex-boyfriend— Anthony Sanborn, also 16. Despite the fact that no forensic evidence from the scene matched Sanborn, there were three witness statements that would seem to provide motive AND put him at the scene. Based upon those statements, although Sanborn continued to state his innocence, he was convicted. Decades later, with the Innocence Project involved, a new investigation was launched and Sanborn was granted a post-conviction hearing. On October 22, 1966 many in Tallahassee had made plans to watch the Florida State Football game. Three of the five members of the Sims family, however, had stayed at home: dad Robert (42), mom Helen (34), and daughter Joy (12). When oldest daughter Norma (17) came home at 11pm, she found the television on but none of her family was crowded around it as she would normally find them. In the early morning hours of August 9, 1976, a truck driver discovered the bodies of a young man and a young woman alongside a rural road in Sumter County, South Carolina. Fourteen-year-old Bill Comeans was a helper. Around 11pm on December 6, 1991 at the Austin, Texas I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt shop, 17-year-olds Eliza Thomas and Jennifer Harbison had just closed the cash register and, according to some customers who had gotten their frozen yogurt to go near closing time, were waiting on a couple of male customers seated at a booth to leave. The two girls had plans with Jennifer’s younger sister, Sarah, and another friend, Amy (both of whom were also at the yogurt shop waiting for Eliza and Jennifer to finish their shift) to have a sleepover. Instead of a fun-filled night together, however, a call came in concerning a reported fire at the ICBY store. When firefighters responded, they didn't just discover a fire; they also discovered the remains of four young girls. It turned into a case riddled with trials, convictions, and overturned sentences-- a case that still lacks closure.. Rodney Marks was only 32, but he had already earned so much respect as an astrophysicist. And he took his work seriously, signing up for multiple long stints at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, run by the National Science Foundation. A job assignment like this one was not for the faint of heart as it required working more than half a year in darkness and in an environment of such extreme temperatures that even a plane couldn’t land because its fuel would freeze. It also meant months of complete isolation from the outside world; so, when Rodney Marks fell ill, there were limited resources. When he died on May 12, 2000, it would be over five months before his body could be removed from the Antarctic continent and an autopsy performed. A full seven months after Marks passed away, autopsy results revealed the biggest shock of all—he had been poisoned.
