Ep 834The Courage of the Commonplace by Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

The Courage of the Commonplace by Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews audiobook. Genre: drama Set against the pageantry and pressure-cooker rituals of early-20th-century Yale, The Courage of the Commonplace follows Johnny McLean, a likable, athletic junior who discovers that the verdict of his classmates can feel like a verdict on his whole life. As Tap Day approaches - the moment when a select few are chosen for the elite senior societies - Johnny measures himself against rivals who seem effortlessly destined for honor, and against a family legacy that leaves little room for ordinary outcomes. When the campus celebration turns into a private reckoning, Johnny must decide whether to keep chasing approval or to rebuild his sense of worth from the inside out. Pushing himself into demanding work and tougher standards than he has ever lived by, he carries those hard-won habits beyond New Haven and into the industrial world, where status means nothing and responsibility can be immediate and unforgiving. In a community shaped by engines, ore, and risk, Johnny is tested by leadership, loyalty, and fear - and learns what kind of bravery lasts when the cheering stops. A poignant coming-of-age story, it asks what success really is, and whether quiet, daily discipline can be its own form of heroism. Ep 833The Planet Savers by Marion Zimmer Bradley ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

The Planet Savers by Marion Zimmer Bradley audiobook. Genre: scifi On the isolated world of Darkover, a terrifying epidemic returns like clockwork: Trailmen's fever, a disease that flares every forty-eight years and can sweep through the human settlements with catastrophic speed. The Terran Trade City is desperate for a cure, and Dr. Randall Forth believes the key lies not only in medicine but in understanding the planet's elusive indigenous people, the tree-dwelling Trailmen of the Hellers. His best hope may be the brilliant but dangerously ill Dr. Jay Allison, a man whose mind has been split by hypnosis into two competing selves: the cold, scientific Jay and the daring, charismatic Jason, who has the survival skills and childhood ties needed to reach the Trailmen. Sent into the mountains with a mixed party of Terrans and Darkovans, including the politically powerful Regis Hastur and the formidable guide Kyla Raineach, Allison must navigate perilous terrain, armed hostility, and deep cultural mistrust. Ep 829Ormond by Maria Edgeworth ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Ormond by Maria Edgeworth audiobook. Genre: drama Maria Edgeworth was one of the most popular writers of her time, a sharp and witty observer of society manners, and a favorite author for Jane Austen. “Ormond,” published in 1817, is a “coming-of-age” novel, tracing a young man’s development as he approaches the age of majority. When we meet him, Harry Ormond has his “heart in the right place,” but is unsettled of character, naïve and impulsive. The central issue is: “What kind of man will he become?” In part, Harry is influenced by the books he reads: Fielding’s “Tom Jones,” Richardson’s “Sir Charles Grandison,” and works of the French Enlightenment. More important, however, are influences from the company he keeps, much as Prince Hal in Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” takes shape as a reflection of the people around him. As an orphan, Harry had been adopted by Sir Ulick O’Shane, a man of society, full of subtlety and strategies, who exploits his public trust for private advantage (a practice known at that time as “jobbing”). Harry also spends time with Sir Ulick’s cousin Cornelius, a Falstaffian figure of hearty good cheer and eccentric rural lifestyle. (He enthrones himself on a tiny island in an Irish lake, calls himself the “King of the Black Islands” and nicknames Ormond “Prince Harry.”) Later, Harry follows Cornelius’s daughter to Paris, where he witnesses the glamorous dissipation of French society in the years before the Revolution. This novel explores the challenges of bringing together apparent oppositions: reconciling promised loyalty with assertion of self, Anglo-Irish landlords with their Irish tenants, Catholics with Protestants, and the impulsive heart with the rational head. “Ormond” is named in the reference list “1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.” For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate) (00:00:00) Chapter 01 (00:33:56) Chapter 02 (00:59:30) Chapter 03 (01:24:32) Chapter 04 (01:44:39) Chapter 05 (02:01:25) Chapter 06 (02:28:51) Chapter 07 (03:01:08) Chapter 08 (03:24:26) Chapter 09 (03:41:19) Chapter 10 (04:01:30) Chapter 11 (04:16:55) Chapter 12 (04:39:05) Chapter 13 (05:07:49) Chapter 14 (05:42:11) Chapter 15 (06:14:18) Chapter 16 (06:37:27) Chapter 17 (06:58:11) Chapter 18 (07:33:29) Chapter 19 (07:59:27) Chapter 20 (08:22:25) Chapter 21 (08:46:52) Chapter 22 (09:16:41) Chapter 23 (09:47:30) Chapter 24 (10:16:10) Chapter 25 (10:30:37) Chapter 26 (10:59:14) Chapter 27 (11:41:39) Chapter 28 (11:58:48) Chapter 29 (12:20:41) Chapter 30 (12:53:50) Chapter 31 (13:23:56) Chapter 32 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 828The Absentee by Maria Edgeworth ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

The Absentee by Maria Edgeworth audiobook. Genre: drama Published in 1812, “The Absentee” by Maria Edgeworth examines social injustice in 19th-century Britain. At that time, the management of many Irish estates suffered from the absenteeism of their Anglo-Irish landlords. We meet Lord and Lady Clonbrony. Lord Clonbrony struggles with debt, while Lady Clonbrony tries to shed her Irish connections and earn status in London’s high society (known as “the ton.”) Meanwhile, their son, Lord Colambre, is wary of the entanglements of that society and escapes to the family estate in Ireland, where he discovers the abuses that have arisen in the family’s absence. Maria Edgeworth was a pioneer of realism in fiction, and one of the most successful and popular novelists of her time. She offered satirical portraits of society manners and sympathetic treatment of regional life. Her work won admiration from authors such as Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott. “The Absentee” is named in the reference list “1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.” For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate) (00:00:00) Chapter 01 (00:27:58) Chapter 02 (01:06:44) Chapter 03 (01:43:32) Chapter 04 (02:19:34) Chapter 05 (03:22:48) Chapter 06 (04:11:50) Chapter 07 (04:48:14) Chapter 08 (05:13:11) Chapter 09 (05:53:08) Chapter 10 (06:23:52) Chapter 11 (06:49:21) Chapter 12 (07:22:45) Chapter 13 (08:11:38) Chapter 14 (09:11:42) Chapter 15 (09:41:47) Chapter 16 (10:35:05) Chapter 17 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 825Mercenary by Mack Reynolds ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Mercenary by Mack Reynolds audiobook. Genre: scifi In a future America that has traded civic duty for comfort, society is locked into a rigid nine-level caste system - and almost no one ever climbs. Joseph Mauser, born Mid-Lower and determined to become something more, has chosen one of the last remaining ladders: Category Military. But war is no longer a clash of nations. Under a universal disarmament pact that bans modern weaponry, the truly powerful settle their disputes in carefully regulated corporate 'fracas' - limited battlefields fought with old-tech guns, strict rules, and wall-to-wall television coverage. When a new fight brews between rival giants like Vacuum Tube Transport and Continental Hovercraft, Mauser signs on as a professional mercenary, weighing not just tactics and survival, but budgets, reputations, and the stock-share promises that can buy a higher place in the system. As he trains recruits from the lower castes, navigates eccentric aristocratic commanders, and confronts the strange mix of spectacle and real bloodshed, Mauser discovers that in a world of TV and tranquilizers, violence can be both entertainment and policy - and the price of ambition may be higher than any pay bonus. Ep 824Adaptation by Mack Reynolds ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Adaptation by Mack Reynolds audiobook. Genre: scifi In 1960 when this was published, the Cold War was at its height. Communism and Free Enterprise (Democracy) were locked in a ferocious struggle to prove that their political ideology was the best form of government for human kind. No holds were barred in this fight; propaganda was poured forth by both sides in a constant push to be seen as better, more progressive, more productive. Nuclear war was a constant threat. I know, I lived through that time. Thankfully the world came through that stressful time without a hot war but the question was not really settled: which is the better system? This story explores that question. 'Hardly had man solved his basic problems on the planet of his origin than he began to fumble into space. Barely a century had elapsed in the exploration of the Solar System than he began to grope for the stars. And suddenly, with an all but religious zeal, mankind conceived its fantasy dream of populating the galaxy.' Ep 821Alice’s Adventures Underground by Lewis Carroll ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy]

Alice’s Adventures Underground by Lewis Carroll audiobook. Genre: fantasy This is the handwritten book that Carroll wrote for private use before being urged to develop it later into Alice in Wonderland. It was generously illustrated by Carrol and meant to entertain his family and friends. When a sick child in a hospital enjoyed it so much, the mother wrote him saying it had distracted her for a bit from her pain and led eventually to Carroll expanding the story. The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862, up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church) : Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853). The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. During the trip the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version no longer exists. The girls and Dodgson took another boat trip a month later when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest. To add the finishing touches he researched natural history for the animals presented in the book, and then had the book examined by other children—particularly the MacDonald children. He added his own illustrations but approached John Tenniel to illustrate the book for publication, telling him that the story had been well liked by children. On 26 November 1864 he gave Alice the handwritten manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Dodgson himself, dedicating it as 'A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer's Day'. Some, including Martin Gardner, speculate there was an earlier version that was destroyed later by Dodgson when he printed a more elaborate copy by hand. Ep 819Let em Breathe Space by Lester del Rey ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Let em Breathe Space by Lester del Rey audiobook. Genre: scifi On the way to Saturn, the space freighter Wahoo is packed far beyond anything it was built to carry. Dr. Pietro's expedition has crammed nineteen people into a ship designed for a handful, and five months of recycled air, bad food, and constant proximity have turned ordinary irritations into open hostility. Narrated by Paul Tremaine, the journey quickly becomes more than a test of engineering and endurance when small mishaps start to look like sabotage. A poisoned atmosphere and failing hydroponics threaten the crew's most basic lifelines, and a sudden death makes it clear that the danger is not only mechanical. Trapped in a sealed world where every breath is accounted for, Tremaine must cut through rivalries, paranoia, and the crew's fraying nerves to figure out who is turning the mission into a nightmare. Ep 818What I Believe by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [religion]

What I Believe by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: religion 'The inner working of my soul, which I wish to speak of here, was not the result of a methodical investigation of doctrinal theology, or of the actual texts of the gospel; it was a sudden removal of all that hid the true meaning of the Christian doctrine – a momentary flash of light, which made everything clear to me. It was something like that which might happen to a man who, after vainly attempting, by a false plan, to build up a statue out of a confused heap of small pieces of marble, suddenly guesses at the figure they are intended to form by the shape of the largest piece; and then, on beginning to set up the statue, finds his guess confirmed by the harmonious joining in of the various pieces. Ep 817Sevastopol by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [history]

Sevastopol by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: history Sevastopol Sketches are three short stories written by Leo Tolstoy and published in 1855 to record his experiences during the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–1855) in the Crimean War (1853-1856). The name originates from Sevastopol, a city in Crimea. The book has also been released under the anglicized title The Sebastopol Sketches and is sometimes titled Sevastopol Stories. These brief 'sketches' formed the basis of many of the episodes in Tolstoy's magnum opus, War and Peace. Sevastopol in December: In Sevastopol in December, Tolstoy uses second person narrative (with the pronoun 'you') in an introductory tour of life in Sevastopol. The detailed tour is arguably similar to one Tolstoy may have been given upon arrival in Sevastopol in November, 1854…. Tolstoy also uses Sevastopol in December to introduce the reader to the settings, mannerisms, and background he uses in Sevastopol in May and Sevastopol in August. For example, when referring to the enemy, either the British or the French, but only the French are featured in the Sketches; they are referred to as ' 'him', as both soldiers and sailors say'. Sevastopol in May In Sevastopol in May, Tolstoy examines the senselessness and vanity of war. The story examines many aspects of the psychology of war, heroism, and the misleading presence of humanism in truces (misleading because countries continuously go to war with one another, despite past truces). Tolstoy concludes by declaring that the only hero of his story is truth. Ep 816My Confession by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]

My Confession by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: philosophy 'My Confession' is a brief autobiographical story of Leo Tolstoy's struggle with a mid-life existential crisis of melancholia. It describes his search for answers to the profound questions 'What will come of my life?' and 'What is the meaning of life?', without answers to which life, for him, had become 'impossible.' Tolstoy reflects on the arc of his philosophical life until then: his childhood abandonment of his Russian orthodox faith; his mastery of strength, will, power, and reason; and how, after he had achieved tremendous financial success and social status, life to him seemed meaningless. After despairing of his attempts to find answers in science, philosophy, eastern wisdom, and his fellow men of letters, he describes his turn to the wisdom of the common people and his attempts to reconcile their instinctive faith with the dictates of his reason. The main body of the text ends with the author reaching a compromise: faith, he realizes, is a necessity, but it must be constrained by reason. However, an epilogue that describes a dream he had some time after completing the body of the text suggests that he has undergone a radical personal and spiritual transformation. Ep 814Family Happiness by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Family Happiness by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: drama In Family Happiness, Leo Tolstoy tells the intimate coming-of-age story of Masha, a motherless young woman growing up on a quiet Russian estate under the kindly guidance of her guardian, the reserved landowner Sergei Mikhailovich. When affection deepens into a sudden, life-altering proposal, Masha enters marriage with bright, romantic expectations and the hope that love will be enough to shape a complete, lasting happiness. But as the couple moves between the calm rhythms of country life and the glittering social whirl of the city, Masha confronts new temptations, shifting desires, and the unsettling realization that devotion can be tested not only by betrayal, but by boredom, pride, and miscommunication. Tolstoy follows the subtle changes in feeling that occur when passion settles into routine, when youth longs for admiration, and when two people discover that they may not be seeking the same kind of joy. Written with psychological precision and quiet emotional force, this novella explores marriage as both refuge and challenge, asking what it truly means to build a shared life when love must grow up alongside the lovers. Ep 812Boyhood by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Boyhood by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: drama Leo Tolstoy's Boyhood continues the intimate, semi-autobiographical story of Nikolai Irtenyev as he leaves the relative shelter of childhood and steps into the restless, self-conscious world of early adolescence. Now moving between the routines of study, the expectations of adults, and the sharp hierarchies of aristocratic society, Nikolai begins to measure himself against friends, rivals, and the ideals he longs to embody. Small social missteps feel catastrophic, private feelings take on new intensity, and every glance or comment seems to carry hidden judgment. At home, shifting family dynamics and the presence of tutors, relatives, and visitors expose him to competing models of masculinity, honor, and faith. In school and in drawing rooms alike, he faces the central conflict of growing up: how to be sincere and good when pride, envy, and the desire to belong keep tugging him off course. With psychological precision and quiet emotional power, Tolstoy captures the awkwardness, wonder, and moral searching of boyhood as Nikolai tries to understand who he is becoming. Ep 813Childhood by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Childhood by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: drama In Childhood, Leo Tolstoy introduces Nikolai Irtenyev, a sensitive Russian boy growing up on a country estate where love, pride, and fear mingle in the ordinary rhythms of family life. Surrounded by affectionate sisters, stern adults, and the quietly powerful presence of his mother, Nikolai begins to notice how quickly feelings shift: a warm moment can turn to shame, jealousy, or sudden loneliness. As tutors and servants shape his days, he watches the complex hierarchies of household and class, learning that kindness can carry hidden cruelty and that admiration can be tangled with resentment. When Nikolai is drawn into new social settings beyond the estate, he struggles to understand who he is and who he wants to become, measuring himself against friends and rivals while longing for moral clarity. Told with intimate honesty and sharp psychological detail, Tolstoy captures the fragile intensity of early memory, the formation of conscience, and the first painful steps toward adulthood. Ep 811Bethink Yourselves by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [religion]

Bethink Yourselves by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: religion As Russia goes to war against Japan, Tolstoy urges those at all levels of society, from the Tsar down to the common soldier, to consider their actions in the light of Christ's teaching. 'However strange this may appear, the most effective and certain deliverance of men from all the calamities which they inflict upon themselves and from the most dreadful of all—war—is attainable, not by any external general measures, but merely by that simple appeal to the consciousness of each separate man which, nineteen hundred years ago, was proposed by Jesus—that every man bethink himself, and ask himself, who is he, why he lives, and what he should and should not do.' Ep 810A Confession by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]

A Confession by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: philosophy Leo Tolstoy's 'A Confession,' written in 1882 shortly after a life-altering spiritual crisis, is a brutally sincere reflection on life, morality, and the nature of faith. Tolstoy describes in great detail the process by which he lost his faith in established Christian churches, the meaninglessness of wealth and fame, the agony of acute depression, and how he overcame misery and dread through personal study of the teachings of Jesus Christ. Along the way, he contrasts the artificial faith and arrogance of educated people with the genuine faith and humility of the Russian peasant. This work, and others of its ilk, were aggressively censored by the Tsarist regime and directly led to Tolstoy being excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church. Ep 809Thralls of the Endless Night by Leigh Douglass Brackett ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Thralls of the Endless Night by Leigh Douglass Brackett audiobook. Genre: scifi This is a classic story from the early days of science fiction pulp magazines. Leigh Brackett, a female author who stood with the best of them during the period, always has a quirky way of examining human behavior whether on earth or a distant planet. A 'tribe' composed of Hans, Officers and a Captain have been marooned on a strange place, out of touch with other humans for many generations. They have to eke out a living with great difficulties in a difficult and hostile environment. Does this sound sort of familiar? There are also really neat 'Piruts' in the story who always try to get the supposed benefit of living close to the Ship. I liked it and the ending is cool too. Leslie Brooke is a classic collection of four fairy tales, retold with a storyteller's bounce and a sharp eye for comic trouble. In The Golden Goose, a much-mocked youngest son sets out with almost nothing, but a small act of kindness opens the door to strange luck and a feather-bright prize that causes chaos everywhere he goes. The Story of the Three Bears follows a curious little girl who wanders into a quiet cottage in the woods and cannot resist testing what does not belong to her, until the owners come home. In The Story of the Three Little Pigs, three siblings build three very different homes, and a hungry wolf turns their choices into a fast, breathless contest of wits and willpower. And in Tom Thumb, a boy no bigger than a thumb faces a world built for giants, relying on quick thinking to survive one scrape after another. Warm, mischievous, and moral without being preachy, this book celebrates kindness, cleverness, and the consequences of impulse. Ep 797The Surprising Adventures of the Magical Monarch of Mo by L. Frank Baum ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy]

The Surprising Adventures of the Magical Monarch of Mo by L. Frank Baum audiobook. Genre: fantasy 'I dare say, there are several questions you would like to ask at the very beginning of this history. First: Who is the Monarch of Mo? And why is he called the Magical Monarch? And where is Mo, anyhow? And why have you never heard of it before? And can it be reached by a railroad or a trolley-car, or must one walk all the way? These questions I realize should be answered before we (that 'we' means you and the book) can settle down for a comfortable reading of all the wonders and astonishing adventures I shall endeavor faithfully to relate. In the first place, the Monarch of Mo is a very pleasant personage holding the rank of King. He is not very tall, nor is he very short; he is midway between fat and lean; he is delightfully jolly when he is not sad, and seldom sad if he can possibly be jolly. How old he may be I have never dared to inquire; but when we realize that he is destined to live as long as the Valley of Mo exists we may reasonably suppose the Monarch of Mo is exactly as old as his native land. And no one in Mo has ever reckoned up the years to see how many they have been. So we will just say that the Monarch of Mo and the Valley of Mo are each a part of the other, and can not be separated.' And so starts this fun series of 'surprises' as Baum calls the chapters, each a delightful present to unwrap carefully and enjoy fully. The Story of the Magic Cloak by L. Frank Baum audiobook. Genre: fantasy In Queen Zixi of Ix, or The Story of the Magic Cloak, L. Frank Baum opens in the enchanted Forest of Burzee, where Queen Lulea and her band of fairies grow restless with endless moonlit dancing and decide to create a new amusement: a magic cloak. Sent to find a worthy mortal, the fairy messenger crosses paths with Margaret, nicknamed Fluff, a newly fatherless girl trudging toward the city of Nole under the sharp rule of her Aunt Rivette, alongside her brother, Bud. In a twist of fortune, Bud is suddenly raised to the throne of Noland, and Fluff finds herself at the heart of courtly schemes, anxious duties, and unexpected wonders. And when Queen Zixi of neighboring Ix sets her sights on the cloak, the fates of two kingdoms hinge on a single, perilous desire. Ep 792The Magic of Oz by L. Frank Baum ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy]

The Magic of Oz by L. Frank Baum audiobook. Genre: fantasy This is the second to last book in the OZ series that Baum actually wrote himself before he passed away. 'A Faithful Record of the Remarkable Adventures of Dorothy and Trot and the Wizard of Oz, together with the Cowardly Lion, the Hungry Tiger and Cap'n Bill, in their successful search for a Magical and Beautiful Birthday Present for Princess Ozma of Oz.' - Summary by Baum. Almost all the marvelous creatures of OZ are involved in this far reaching adventure story with tons of danger, evil magic, dastardly plots and heroic last minute acts of bravery to finally save the day. The Lonesome Duck makes her first and last appearance in this book which, by itself, makes it a 'must listen to' in my opinion. Ep 789Mary Louise in the Country by L. Frank Baum ~ Full Audiobook [family]

Mary Louise in the Country by L. Frank Baum audiobook. Genre: family The Bluebird Books is a series of novels popular with teenage girls in the 1910s and 1920s. The series was begun by L. Frank Baum using his Edith Van Dyne pseudonym, then continued by at least three others, all using the same pseudonym. Baum wrote the first four books in the series, possibly with help from his son, Harry Neal Baum, on the third. The books are concerned with adolescent girl detectives— a concept Baum had experimented with earlier, in The Daring Twins (1911) and Phoebe Daring (1912). The Bluebird series began with Mary Louise, originally written as a tribute to Baum's favorite sister, Mary Louise Baum Brewster. Baum's publisher, Reilly & Britton, rejected that manuscript, apparently judging the heroine too independent. Baum wrote a new version of the book; the original manuscript is lost. The title character is Mary Louise Burrows. In this volume, Mary Louise and Gran'pa Jim take a house for the summer in a quiet place called Cragg's Crossing. There, they meet with any number of peculiar people - and one very peculiar mystery!! Ep 788Little Wizard Stories of Oz by L. Frank Baum ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy]

Little Wizard Stories of Oz by L. Frank Baum audiobook. Genre: fantasy The 'Little Wizard Stories of Oz' are six short stories written by L. Frank Baum in 1913. By all accounts, Baum intended to finish the Oz series with 'The Emerald City of Oz,' published in 1910. Following that, he attempted to write non-Oz books, publishing 'The Sea Fairies' in 1911 and 'Sky Island' in 1912. But, (as Baum himself laments in the prefaces of many of his Oz books,) his 'little tyrants' were only interested in hearing more Oz stories. So in 1913, he returned to writing about Oz, putting out both The 'Little Wizard Stories' and 'The Patchwork Girl of Oz' that year. The Little Wizard Stories were geared toward younger children and were originally published separately, 'similar in style to today's Little Golden Books.' The next year, they were published together as one volume. Each Little Wizard Story revolves around the adventures of two famous Oz characters, and their humorous adventures in and around the land of Oz. Ep 785Gambler’s World & The Yillian Way by Keith Laumer ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Gambler’s World & The Yillian Way by Keith Laumer audiobook. Genre: scifi In Gamblers World & The Yillian Way, Keith Laumer drops you into the sly, hard-hitting universe of Jame Retief, a working diplomat for Terra's sprawling Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne who has little patience for ceremony when lives are on the line. In Gambler's World, Retief arrives on Petreac alongside puffed-up superiors and fragile treaty obligations, only to find a society where status, power, and even politics are settled like wagers. As unrest builds and rival factions circle, Retief must read the room faster than any professional cardsharp, spotting who is bluffing, who is cornered, and who is ready to turn a diplomatic reception into a massacre. In The Yillian Way, a mission to the Yills becomes a minefield of protocol: every greeting, gift, and meal is a test, and every mistake could be fatal. While the official delegation clings to rules and titles, Retief relies on nerve, humor, and a keen understanding of how insults function in alien culture. Part political farce, part adventure, these two tales skewer bureaucracy while celebrating competence under pressure.
