Ep 734A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen audiobook. Genre: drama In A Doll's House, Henrik Ibsen draws listeners into the warm, carefully arranged home of Nora Helmer, a lively young wife devoted to her husband, Torvald, and proud of the comfortable life they are building. But beneath the cheerful routines and pet names, Nora carries a private burden: years earlier, she made a risky choice to protect her family, and the consequences of that decision return just as Torvald begins a new position at the bank. When the desperate clerk Nils Krogstad threatens to expose Nora's secret unless she intervenes on his behalf, her domestic world turns into a pressure cooker of fear, persuasion, and moral compromise. As old friends reappear, including the steady Kristine Linde and the ailing Dr. Rank, Nora is forced to examine the true foundations of her marriage and the roles society has written for her. With sharp dialogue and mounting tension, Ibsen explores love and power, appearances and reality, and what it costs to be seen as a person rather than a possession. Ep 733The World I Live In by Helen Keller ~ Full Audiobook [biography]

The World I Live In by Helen Keller audiobook. Genre: biography The World I Live In by Helen Keller is a collection of essays that poignantly tells of her impressions of the world, through her sense of touch, smell, her imagination and dreams. My hand is to me what your hearing and sight together are to you. In large measure we travel the same highways, read the same books, speak the same language, yet our experiences are different. All my comings and goings turn on the hand as on a pivot. It is the hand that binds me to the world of men and women. The hand is my feeler with which I reach through isolation and darkness and seize every pleasure, every activity that my fingers encounter. With the dropping of a little word from another's hand into mine, a slight flutter of the fingers, began the intelligence, the joy, the fullness of my life. Ep 732The Repairman by Harry Harrison ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

The Repairman by Harry Harrison audiobook. Genre: scifi In a sleek, automated future where machines run nearly everything, the people who can still fix those machines have become an afterthought. The Repairman follows one of the last true troubleshooters, a working-class specialist who spends his days crawling through service ducts, hunting down faults in systems that most citizens no longer understand and no longer want to think about. When a critical breakdown ripples outward from a seemingly minor failure, he is pulled from routine calls into the bright, bureaucratic world that depends on uninterrupted technology. There, corporate rules, spotless control rooms, and complacent managers collide with the messy reality of maintenance: things wear out, connections fail, and somebody has to get their hands dirty. As pressure mounts to restore operations quickly and quietly, the repairman must rely on his practical ingenuity, hard-won instincts, and a stubborn sense of professional pride to navigate a society that values convenience over competence. Witty, sharp, and unsettlingly plausible, Harry Harrison's story explores status, responsibility, and what happens when progress leaves essential people behind. Ep 730The K-Factor by Harry Harrison ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

The K-Factor by Harry Harrison audiobook. Genre: scifi In Harry Harrison's The K-Factor, humanity has tried to make war obsolete by turning it into a measurable, manageable risk. The key tool is Societics, a hard-nosed, data-driven science that treats whole cultures like systems and watches for the smallest shift that can trigger a runaway chain reaction. When the frontier planet Himmel begins showing a sudden, inexplicable rise in its k-factor - the war factor - veteran field operative Neel Sidorak is pulled from routine work and sent to find out why. Working under the weary guidance of Societics' aging founder and partnered with his assistant Adao Costa, Neel is dropped into a tense colonial society where independence movements, political pride, and old resentments are building pressure by the hour. But the numbers do not lie, and they hint at something worse than local unrest: someone may be feeding dangerous knowledge to the wrong hands, pushing Himmel toward a catastrophic point of no return. As Neel races to map the real forces shaping the planet, he must decide how far a supposedly peaceful civilization should go to prevent a war before it starts. Ep 728Arm of the Law by Harry Harrison ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Arm of the Law by Harry Harrison audiobook. Genre: scifi On the dusty margins of Mars, Nineport is a place people pass through, not a place they build. Its police station reflects that truth: a bored, graft-friendly chief, a couple of unreliable patrolmen, and one seasoned sergeant trying to keep the town from sliding completely into chaos. Then a coffin-sized crate arrives from Earth, addressed to the department with no warning and a promise of 'field testing.' Inside is Ned, a police experimental robot in a crisp, blue-painted uniform and armed with a literal-minded zeal for duty. At first, Ned is treated like expensive maintenance equipment, sweeping floors and sorting paperwork while the human cops get on with surviving Nineport. But when an armed robbery call comes in and the chief takes the lazy way out, Ned is sent into the street to do a cop's job. In a town where criminals operate under protection and everyone knows the name China Joe, one perfectly efficient machine is enough to upset every fragile arrangement. As violence flares and authority is challenged, the sergeant must decide what law enforcement means when the 'arm of the law' is made of metal, wiring, and unbreakable logic. Ep 726Janet of the Dunes by Harriet T. Comstock ~ Full Audiobook [family]

Janet of the Dunes by Harriet T. Comstock audiobook. Genre: family Known primarily for her children's books, Harriet T. Comstock would occasionally depart from that genre and showcase her writing talent in adult prose as well. Janet of the Dunes is one such departure wherein she masterfully takes us into the lives of the bold men and women who tended those life saving stations along the seaboard which many a ship relied upon for their safety. They were simple people, large of heart and as close-knit as a tiny community can and must ever be, and they, above all else, took their duties very seriously. The story revolves primarily around Janet and her 'Cap'n Billy Daddy' and how their lives and their devotion to one another are touched by the others within the small circle of people of the dunes, the hills, and the light. Ep 722The Protector by Harold Bindloss ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]

The Protector by Harold Bindloss audiobook. Genre: adventure Harold Bindloss, while born in England, based most of his novels in western Canada, and The Protector is based primarily in and around Vancouver and Victoria. There is often danger involved in the mining and timber industries north of Vancouver, and there is also danger in the trust given to people who own and operate these mines and timber lands. And finding one's way in locating them can be equally as difficult as well. Wallace Vane and his trusted friend Carroll seemed to encounter these dangers in a seemingly endless journey both for business purposes and for adventure in their search for adequate timber land which they had inadvertently heard of. What is the driving force behind Wallace Vane? Did he regret leaving his home country and the people he knew when he left England, therefore had something to prove, but didn't even realize it himself? Was it simply a secret joy that he received whenever he observed the beauty of his adopted country with its mountains, forests, and crystal clear water? Perhaps it was his reasonable success in the lumber industry? Or was it something deeper within him? Something, perhaps, that he didn't even recognize himself? Ep 720The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen ~ Full Audiobook [folklore]

The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen audiobook. Genre: folklore On a bitter New Year's Eve in a snowy city, a poor little girl wanders the streets with a bundle of matches to sell. Barefoot, hungry, and afraid to go home without money, she drifts from doorway to doorway as crowds hurry past, too busy to notice her. To keep her hands from freezing, she dares to strike a match, and in its small, wavering light she sees comforting visions: warmth, food, and the kind of tenderness she rarely receives in the waking world. Each flare of light offers a brief refuge from the cold and a glimpse of what she longs for most, even as the night deepens and her situation grows more desperate. Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Match Girl' is a stark, luminous tale about poverty and indifference, the fragile power of imagination, and the human need for mercy. Simple in language but profound in feeling, it invites listeners to look closely at those society overlooks and to consider what a single act of kindness might mean. Ep 719The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen ~ Full Audiobook [folklore]

The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen audiobook. Genre: folklore This is a collection of a few of my personal favorite stories by Hans Christian Andersen that I most loved as a child and still enjoy as an adult. The Emperor's New Clothes was funny from my earliest years because even then I could see that it poked fun at adults and their silly pretensions; The Ugly Duckling I think, was enjoyable because the bullied little one turned out so well and it had a happy ending although I thought even as a child that the protagonist should have gone back and brought those mean barnyard fowl down a peg or two. Little Tiny or Thumbellina is just a sweet story with adventure thrown in and The Brave Little Tin Soldier was and is a tribute to bravery and steadfastness. The last story, There Is No Doubt About It ! was so obviously silly and fun even to a young child and frankly, I just love the way the animals talk in this story. Among the thousands of inhabitable planets that had been discovered and visited, Veridis alone seemed to defy the laws of planetary development and evolution. It was extremely young, barely 10 million years had passed since it was completely molten and yet now it was covered with life of all kinds; kinds that should have not had a chance to even begin to develop, much less reach their current stage. To investigate this anomaly among the stars, a team of experienced specialists was sent out to delve further into the mystery and if possible, solve it. Other than the obvious fields of planetology and geology, other specialties were included like paleontology and archaeology. The highly dangerous flora and fauna of the planet do not help at all. So, what is the cause? It lies deeper in the Green Planet than anyone thinks and is much more dangerous than they can ever imagine. Ep 715The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft ~ Full Audiobook [horror]

The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft audiobook. Genre: horror In Providence and beyond, a young man named Francis Wayland Thurston inherits a box of unsettling papers from his late uncle, a professor of languages who had been investigating a strange cult. What begins as a curious family mystery becomes a widening inquiry into scattered accounts: a gruesome police raid in the Louisiana bayous, the ravings of artists haunted by the same impossible dream, and the testimony of sailors who encountered an uncharted island after a catastrophic storm. As Thurston stitches these fragments together, he confronts a chilling possibility - that ancient powers older than humanity are not myths but dormant realities, and that certain symbols and chants serve as keys to their return. With each document he reads, the world he thought he understood grows more fragile, replaced by a vision of cosmic indifference where human reason is a thin shield against the unknown. The Call of Cthulhu is a landmark tale of dread and discovery, blending investigative suspense with a mounting sense of existential terror as one man tries to decide what to believe and what must remain buried. Ep 714Herbert West - Re-Animator by H. P. Lovecraft ~ Full Audiobook [horror]

Herbert West - Re-Animator by H. P. Lovecraft audiobook. Genre: horror In Herbert West - Re-Animator, H. P. Lovecraft delivers a brisk, grisly tale of scientific ambition unmoored from morality. The story is told by an unnamed medical student who becomes the reluctant confidant and assistant of Herbert West, a brilliant, coldly driven researcher convinced that death is not a final boundary but a technical problem waiting for the right solution. From their early days in medical school at Miskatonic University, West pursues a single obsession: a reanimation serum that can restore life to the dead. Each experiment demands fresher subjects, stricter secrecy, and greater compromises, drawing the narrator deeper into a clandestine world of graveyards, dissecting rooms, and midnight trials. As West pushes beyond accepted medicine into forbidden territory, the results are never simply triumph or failure, but something far more unsettling - forcing both men to confront what remains of a person when the body is compelled to move again. Tense, episodic, and steeped in dread, this classic of weird fiction explores hubris, guilt, and the terrifying cost of treating the human soul as just another variable. Ep 711The Passionate Friends by H. G. Wells ~ Full Audiobook [romance]

The Passionate Friends by H. G. Wells audiobook. Genre: romance H. G. Wells is best known for his science fiction, but some of his greatest works were in other genres. The Passionate Friends is a love story. It also is a story about dreams, despair, jealousy, sex, the struggle against social convention, the future of civilization, and much much more. It is written by a father to his son, 'not indeed to the child you are now, but to the man you are going to be.' He writes it so that one day, perhaps when he is dead, his grown son can read it and rediscover him as a friend and equal. In the process, he tries to make sense of a lifetime's experiences and distill some kind of wisdom from them. It is quite simply a beautiful book, both inspiring and heartbreaking. Ep 710The Discovery Of The Future by H. G. Wells ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]

The Discovery Of The Future by H. G. Wells audiobook. Genre: philosophy The Discovery of the Future is a 1902 philosophical lecture by H. G. Wells that argues for the knowability of the future. It was originally delivered to the Royal Institution on January 24, 1902. Wells begins by distinguishing between 'two divergent types of mind,' one that judges and attaches importance principally to what has happened in the past and one that judges and attaches importance principally to what will happen in the future. To the former he attributes the adjectives 'legal or submissive,' 'passive,' and 'oriental,' and to the latter the adjectives 'legislative, creative, organizing, or masterful,' and 'active,' calling it 'a more modern and much less abundant type of mind.'... Confessing himself to be among 'those who believe entirely in the forces behind the individual' rather than in individuals themselves as determining causes, Wells argues that there is 'no reason why we should not aspire to, and discover and use, safe and serviceable, generalizations upon countless issues in the human destiny.' Wells devotes the last part of his text to speculations about 'the question what is to come after man,' considering it 'the most persistently fascinating and the most insoluble question in the whole world.' He concludes with a statement of personal faith 'in the coherency and purpose in the world and in the greatness of human destiny.' Ep 709Ann Veronica by H. G. Wells ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Ann Veronica by H. G. Wells audiobook. Genre: drama Set in Edwardian England, Ann Veronica follows a bright, restless young woman who has been raised to be obedient, sheltered, and grateful, yet feels a mounting hunger for education, independence, and a life shaped by her own convictions. Chafing under the strict authority of her father and the narrow expectations placed on women, Ann pushes beyond the safe boundaries of her comfortable home and into the charged world of London, where new ideas about politics, science, and women's rights collide with old social rules. As she encounters reformers, intellectuals, and would-be guardians, Ann must weigh what freedom truly costs: financial security, family approval, reputation, and even her sense of who she is. Love and desire complicate her resolve, forcing her to question whether intimacy can coexist with self-determination. With sharp social observation and urgent moral energy, H. G. Wells traces Ann's awakening as she tests the limits of convention and searches for a life that feels honest, equal, and fully her own. Naudsonce by H. Beam Piper audiobook. Genre: scifi Naudsonce? What does THAT mean? Well, to find out you will need to listen to this story where Piper's unique mind explores what we mean by 'communication' and how it happens. The joint Space Navy-Colonial Office expedition was looking for new planets suitable for colonization; they had been out, now, for four years, which was close to maximum for an exploring expedition. They had entered eleven systems, and made landings on eight planets. Three had been reasonably close to Terra-type but were all disqualified by terrible animals or warlike inhabitants. Now, finally here was an ideal world; their last chance before returning in disgrace. Now the only thing was to get an agreement from the local king or whatever to the colonization. Easy, right? Well first, you've got to talk to them ...... and there the trouble starts. Ep 700Last Enemy by H. Beam Piper ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Last Enemy by H. Beam Piper audiobook. Genre: scifi In Last Enemy, H. Beam Piper drops the listener into a polished, tradition-bound society where reincarnation is more than faith - it is the foundation of law, status, and power. Dallona of Hadron, a gifted psychic researcher, is on the verge of a breakthrough that could turn that foundation into something measurable, provable, and therefore dangerously disruptive. Her test is set to unfold at an elegant dinner party hosted by Garnon of Roxor, a gathering that is not a celebration at all but a carefully staged discarnation feast: a voluntary death meant to serve science. When the moment arrives, a trained sensitive in hypnotic trance becomes a living conduit, and the after-death testimony that follows threatens to make death itself a solved problem. But in a world where belief systems are political weapons, proof can be as lethal as any lie. As factions maneuver to control, suppress, or exploit what Dallona has uncovered, she finds herself forced to weigh truth against the human cost of revealing it - and to consider what happens to a civilization when its oldest fear loses its teeth. The planet has one prize worth exporting: tallow-wax, a rare, high-value substance taken from enormous sea creatures by daring monster hunters who ride heavy flying-subs that are part aircraft, part submarine, and part whaling boat. Seventeen-year-old Walter 'Walt' Boyd, a cub reporter at the Port Sandor Times, expects his job to be mostly weather, arrivals, and small-town disputes. Instead, a ship's landing, an unexpected visitor, and a sudden shift in the politics of tallow-wax pricing pull him into a struggle that could break Fenris's only industry. As rumors spread and tempers flare, Walt and his father follow money trails, crooked deals, and backroom alliances, trying to expose who is profiting while ordinary hunters risk their lives for less and less. Four-Day Planet blends frontier survival, investigative legwork, and mounting political tension into a classic mid-century tale of integrity versus corruption on the edge of civilization. Ep 698Fables for the Frivolous by Guy Wetmore Carryl ~ Full Audiobook [poetry]

Fables for the Frivolous by Guy Wetmore Carryl audiobook. Genre: poetry In Fables for the Frivolous, Guy Wetmore Carryl turns the familiar shape of the classic fable inside out, delivering a brisk collection of witty verse tales that end not with solemn instruction, but with sly punchlines and upside-down morals. Each short poem introduces a small cast of recognizable characters - vain social climbers, stubborn fools, self-satisfied experts, and a menagerie of animals who behave with all the charming pettiness of polite society. With a narrator who is equal parts storyteller and conspirator, Carryl sketches quick scenes of temptation, pride, miscommunication, and misplaced certainty, then snaps them shut with a concluding couplet that skewers the lesson you thought you were about to learn. The central conflict in these miniatures is almost always the same: a character's tidy worldview colliding with reality, and losing. Written with nimble rhyme and a satirist's eye for human habits, the book invites listeners to laugh at pretension, question easy wisdom, and enjoy language that lands like a well-timed wink. Light, sharp, and endlessly quotable, these fables are built for replay. Ep 697The British Barbarians by Grant Allen ~ Full Audiobook [comedy]

The British Barbarians by Grant Allen audiobook. Genre: comedy After Civil Servant Philip Christy crosses paths with the mysterious Bertram Ingledew in the respectable suburb of Brackenhurst, Philip and his sister Frida, married to the wealthy Scot Robert Monteith, become friends with the stranger. Where does he come from? Allen explores some interesting ideas about society, some of which are curiously relevant today. The story is preceded by an introduction which, although it may appear to have no connection with the story itself, the reader is earnestly besought by the author to read. The introduction begins as a diatribe against publishers, and develops into a philosophical justification of Allen's writing, and may, if desired, be omitted by the listener who is only interested in the story. Ep 695Orthodoxy by Gilbert K. Chesterton ~ Full Audiobook [religion]

Orthodoxy by Gilbert K. Chesterton audiobook. Genre: religion In Orthodoxy, G. K. Chesterton sets out to explain how he arrived at Christian belief, not through inherited convention, but through a hard-won sense that the world is both stranger and more meaningful than modern cynicism allows. Framed as a personal intellectual adventure, the book follows Chesterton as he tests the fashionable ideas of his age - skepticism, materialism, and self-made philosophies - and finds them unable to account for everyday experience: joy and duty, wonder and reason, sin and virtue, freedom and constraint. With wit, paradox, and vivid imagery, he argues that Christian orthodoxy is not a dull set of rules but a daring balance of opposites that protects the color and sanity of life. Along the way he reflects on imagination, humility, morality, and the peril of making the self the measure of truth. Both a defense of faith and a critique of modern assumptions, Orthodoxy invites listeners to reconsider what seems obvious, and to see belief as a living, dynamic response to the real world. Ep 693Stoicism by George Stock ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]

Stoicism by George Stock audiobook. Genre: philosophy This short book is part of the Philosophies Ancient and Modern series, which attempts to make Western philosophy more accessible to the general public. In this volume, George Stock provides a concise primer on Stoicism, the ancient philosophy that maintained that the universe is governed entirely by fate, and that humans can achieve happiness only by cultivating a calm acceptance of the vicissitudes of life. Among the Stoics of the Greek and Roman world were its founder, Zeno, the former slave Epictetus, and the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. George Stock discusses not only the Stoic ethics, but also less well-known aspects of Stoicism, such as its division of the branches of philosophy, its account of logic, and its natural philosophy. Ep 692QRM-Interplanetary by George O. Smith ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

QRM-Interplanetary by George O. Smith audiobook. Genre: scifi Far from Earth, where the Sun can turn a simple transmission into silence, the Venus Equilateral Relay Station keeps three worlds talking. Built from an asteroid and parked sixty degrees ahead of Venus in its orbit, the spinning cylinder is a self-contained city of nearly three thousand people - engineers, technicians, and families whose daily work makes interplanetary civilization possible. Don Channing, one of the station's best electronics men, lives for the clean logic of beam circuits and relay schedules. Then the Interplanetary Communications Commission appoints a new Director: Francis Burbank, a cost-cutting administrator who treats a lifeline like a ledger. As Burbank clamps down on personal freedoms, dismantles long-standing procedures, and meddles with systems he does not understand, resentment simmers and the station's delicate balance begins to wobble. When routine maintenance and bureaucratic shortcuts collide, Channing and his colleagues - including beam-control expert Walt Franks and sharp-tongued Arden Westland - must keep communications stable while racing to prevent a life-support disaster that could turn Venus Equilateral into a drifting tomb. QRM-Interplanetary is classic, idea-driven science fiction about competence under pressure and the deadly interference of bad leadership. Ep 691The Lifted Veil by George Eliot ~ Full Audiobook [horror]

The Lifted Veil by George Eliot audiobook. Genre: horror In Victorian England, sensitive and solitary Latimer drifts through life with a mind he does not fully control. After a strange illness in his youth, he becomes cursed - or gifted - with sudden flashes of the future and an unnerving ability to hear the secret thoughts of those around him. What first seems like a way to understand people more deeply quickly turns into a relentless assault of petty motives, hidden cruelties, and banal desires, leaving Latimer increasingly detached from ordinary human warmth. When he meets the poised and enigmatic Bertha, he hopes love might anchor him to the living world and quiet the din inside his head. Instead, his visions and impressions intensify, tightening into a private dread that he cannot name and cannot escape. As marriage, family expectations, and medical ambition intersect with Latimer's frightening perceptions, George Eliot crafts a chilling, intimate study of isolation and the danger of seeing too much. The Lifted Veil is a darkly psychological tale about knowledge without comfort, intimacy without trust, and the thin barrier between rational life and the uncanny. Ep 689Middlemarch by George Eliot ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Middlemarch by George Eliot audiobook. Genre: drama Set in the English Midlands in the years just before the Reform Act of 1832, Middlemarch follows the intertwined lives of the residents of a provincial town where ambition, idealism, and gossip travel quickly through drawing rooms, churches, and counting houses. At its center is Dorothea Brooke, a young woman determined to live for something larger than comfort, whose choices pull her into a marriage and a social world she only partly understands. Around her move the newly arrived doctor Tertius Lydgate, hungry to modernize medicine and build a meaningful career, and the earnest banker Fred Vincy and practical Mary Garth, whose relationship is tested by debt, duty, and pride. Ep 688A Man of Honor by George Eggleston ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

A Man of Honor by George Eggleston audiobook. Genre: drama In the uneasy calm after the Civil War, Robert Pagebrook, a young New Yorker with a proud streak and a wounded heart, finds himself unmoored. A professional setback and a romantic disappointment have left him restless and self-critical, so when an invitation arrives from Virginia kin he barely knows, he takes it as a chance to begin again. At Shirley, an old family place shaped by memory, custom, and Reconstruction-era change, Pagebrook is welcomed into a world where lineage still matters, manners conceal sharp judgments, and every neighbor seems to have a theory about what a man owes to his name. As Robert navigates cousins, country characters, and the quiet pressures of Southern society, he discovers that hospitality can come with expectations, and affection can test pride. Then an abrupt financial shock from home leaves him stranded and indebted, forcing him to choose between easy evasions and the harder work of living up to the standard he admires most: honor. With keen observation and moral tension, Eggleston turns a visit into a trial of character, where love, loyalty, and self-respect all hang in the balance. Ep 686Mrs. Warren’s Profession by George Bernard Shaw ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Mrs. Warren’s Profession by George Bernard Shaw audiobook. Genre: drama In Mrs. Warren's Profession, George Bernard Shaw turns a drawing-room visit into a razor-sharp confrontation with the economics of respectability. Vivie Warren is young, brilliant, and determined to build an independent life through hard work and clear thinking. But when she finally spends time with her mother, Kitty Warren, the polished story of success that has always hovered at the edge of their relationship begins to crack. A few well-placed acquaintances gather around them - including the charming, unreliable Frank Gardner; his prudent father, the Reverend Samuel Gardner; and the wealthy, predatory Sir George Crofts - and each brings a different version of what society calls virtue, ambition, and survival. As secrets are forced into the open, Vivie must decide what kind of adult she will be, and what she owes to family, money, and a world built on double standards. Bold, witty, and unsettling, Shaw's play examines how poverty, power, and hypocrisy can shape lives, especially for women, and asks whether moral judgment is ever separable from the conditions that make certain choices seem inevitable.
