Ep 932The Innocence of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]
The Innocence of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton audiobook. Genre: mystery In The Innocence of Father Brown, G. K. Chesterton introduces an unlikely detective: Father Brown, a quiet Catholic priest with a shabby umbrella, a round face, and a disarming manner that makes criminals underestimate him. Moving through English villages, country houses, and city streets, Father Brown is repeatedly drawn into baffling crimes - stolen jewels, sudden disappearances, impossible murders, and deceptions staged with theatrical flair. While others chase evidence, reputation, or spectacle, he listens patiently, notices what vanity hides, and uses a deep understanding of human weakness to see through lies. Alongside him appears the elegant and notorious thief Flambeau, whose encounters with the priest become a tense contest of wits and conscience. Each case is a compact puzzle, but the stories also explore larger questions about pride, temptation, forgiveness, and the thin line between respectability and wrongdoing. Wry, philosophical, and richly atmospheric, this classic collection invites listeners into mysteries where the smallest detail - or the smallest act of mercy - can change everything. Ep 931Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]
Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche audiobook. Genre: philosophy In Beyond Good and Evil, Friedrich Nietzsche launches a provocative investigation into the hidden motives behind moral beliefs and the cultural assumptions people treat as timeless truths. Written as a series of sharp, energetic sections rather than a single linear argument, the book challenges readers to question ideas such as objective morality, absolute truth, and the comforting stories societies tell themselves about virtue and vice. Nietzsche targets the legacy of traditional European philosophy and religion, arguing that many 'higher' ideals can mask deeper drives: the will to interpret, to rank, to control, and to give life a meaning that favors certain types of people. Along the way he examines the psychology of philosophers, the social power of moral language, the tension between individual creativity and herd conformity, and the costs of intellectual honesty. With aphorisms that move from biting critique to visionary calls for new values, Nietzsche invites readers to look past familiar categories of good and evil and confront the unsettling possibility that moral systems are human creations, shaped by history, temperament, and struggle. The central conflict is the reader's own: whether to cling to inherited certainties or risk a harder freedom of thought. Ep 928Cathay by Ezra Pound ~ Full Audiobook [poetry]
Cathay by Ezra Pound audiobook. Genre: poetry The Cathay poems appeared in a slim volume in 1915. They are, in effect, Ezra Pound’s English translations/interpretations from notebooks written by the Japanese scholar Ernest Fenollosa. Pound, not knowing any Chinese or Japanese at all, promptly created a new and somewhat complex style of translation, as he had done with words from several other languages. The Cathay poems are primarily written by the Chinese poet Li Po, referred to throughout these translations as Rihaku, the Japanese form of his name. These poems came to have a profound influence on 20th Century poetry, spawning, among other things, the Imagist movement, and helped in the generation of widespread interest in Asian literature and thought. Also included in this collection are two poems from Pound’s 1912 collection Ripostes. “The Seafarer” is another of Pound’s experiments in translation, this one from the Anglo-Saxon. Ep 927Flatland - A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
Flatland - A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott audiobook. Genre: scifi In the perfectly ordered world of Flatland, everything and everyone is a geometric shape, and your place in society is literally defined by the number of sides you have. A Square, a respectable middle-class professional, lives a predictable life governed by rigid rules, sharp prejudices, and an unquestioned faith in the dimensions he can see. But on the eve of the centennial celebration, his routine is interrupted by unsettling encounters that hint at realities beyond length and width. When a mysterious visitor from a higher dimension appears, the Square is drawn into a mind-bending journey that challenges his understanding of space, logic, and even the limits of imagination. As he struggles to communicate what he has learned to a society terrified of the unknown, Flatland becomes both a playful mathematical thought experiment and a pointed satire of social hierarchy, conformity, and intellectual censorship. By blending wit with wonder, Edwin Abbott Abbott crafts a story that invites listeners to reconsider how easily 'common sense' can become a cage - and how daring it is to see the world from a different angle. Ep 926The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe ~ Full Audiobook [horror]
The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe audiobook. Genre: horror When young Arthur Gordon Pym, a restless teenager in Nantucket, convinces his friend Augustus Barnard to help him stow away on a whaling voyage, he expects adventure - not a descent into terror. Hidden in the cramped hold of the Grampus, Pym is plunged into darkness, hunger, and delirium as the ship lurches into crisis. When disaster erupts above deck, he and a handful of survivors are forced into uneasy alliances, facing mutiny, brutal violence, and the thin line between courage and desperation. Cast adrift on an indifferent ocean, their struggle becomes a grim test of endurance as they chase uncertain rescue and reckon with what people will do to live. Yet survival only opens the door to stranger horizons. As Pym's journey carries him farther south into unknown seas, the familiar rules of navigation, nature, and human behavior begin to warp, and the expedition turns into an eerie exploration of the boundaries between fact and nightmare. Poe blends sea tale realism with mounting dread, building a voyage that is as much about the mind's extremes as the world's edge. Ep 925Last Days of Pompeii by Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton ~ Full Audiobook [history]
Last Days of Pompeii by Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton audiobook. Genre: history Last Days of Pompeii is a novel written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1834. Once a very widely read book and now relatively neglected, it culminates in the cataclysmic destruction of the city of Pompeii by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The novel uses its characters to contrast the decadent culture of first-century Rome with both older cultures and coming trends. The protagonist, Glaucus, represents the Greeks who have been subordinated by Rome, and his nemesis Arbaces the still older culture of Egypt. Olinthus is the chief representative of the nascent Christian religion, which is presented favorably but not uncritically. Ep 924The Book of Dragons by Edith Nesbit ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy]
The Book of Dragons by Edith Nesbit audiobook. Genre: fantasy In The Book of Dragons, Edith Nesbit gathers a sparkling set of fantasy tales in which dragons are not distant legends but troublesome, tempting, and often very funny neighbors to the human world. Across these stories, curious children, stubborn adults, would-be heroes, and unlucky families stumble into encounters with beasts that breathe fire, freeze rivers, hoard treasure, or slip into everyday life in startling disguises. Each adventure begins with a small decision - a broken rule, a careless wish, a plan to be brave, or the belief that magic can be managed - and then follows the consequences as dragons upset households, kingdoms, and expectations. With her trademark blend of wit and warmth, Nesbit turns classic fairy-tale ingredients into something sharper and more surprising: courage is tested, cleverness matters as much as strength, and kindness can be as powerful as any sword. By turns mischievous and suspenseful, these stories invite listeners to delight in wonder while recognizing the hard truths beneath the enchantment: magic always has a price, and growing up often means learning which bargains to refuse. Ep 923The Trail of the Axe by Ridgwell Cullum ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]
The Trail of the Axe by Ridgwell Cullum audiobook. Genre: adventure Dave ran a lumber mill in western Canada. There are some workers within his organization who he trusts implicitly, some who he doesn't trust at all, and some who he is unsure about. But Dave is basically a trusting soul. Most of the folks in Malkern liked him, as he had been a major factor in shaping the village and in providing employment for a lot of the folks who lived in the area. Dave was not a pleasant site to look at; ungainly, not very attractive, yet he had a heart that was the antithesis of his lack of physical attractiveness. Dave was a good friend to Betty, who had promised her hand in marriage to Jim Truscott, who was on leave from Malkern searching for gold in the Yukon territory to secure a future for himself and his bride-to-be. Truscott had asked Dave to watch over Betty during his absence, but when he returned from his fortune seeking expedition in the Yukon, Truscott was a changed man. He didn't seem the same personable Jim Truscott that Betty had promised herself to, and Dave was a bit suspicious of his personality alterations as well. Now, Betty had to decide whether to hold herself to her promise, and Dave had to determine whether or not he should also keep himself to the promise he had made to his friend. There is plenty of action, suspense, and personal introspection combined with a love story in The Trail of the Axe, and many a surprise awaits every turn. Genre: mystery A fast-talking blend of thrills, laughs, and old-world romance, The Ghost Breaker follows Warren Jarvis, a Kentucky gentleman who has brought a dangerous feud with him all the way to Manhattan. After a predawn gunfight in a hotel corridor, Warren finds himself hiding in the suite of Maria Theresa, a proud Spanish princess with troubles of her own. Instead of turning him in, Maria offers a bargain: she will help Warren slip past the law if he will become her sworn protector and travel with her to her ancestral estate abroad - a crumbling castle rumored to be haunted by a relentless spirit. With Warren's sharp instincts and his loyal (and often hilarious) servant Rusty at his side, the journey turns from a daring escape into a battle of nerves as strange noises, shadowy figures, and midnight warnings stalk the halls. But in a place steeped in secrets, Warren soon suspects the haunting may be more than superstition - and that someone very human could be using fear as a weapon. As danger closes in, courage, loyalty, and growing affection are tested in every darkened corridor. Ep 918October Vagabonds by Richard le Gallienne ~ Full Audiobook [poetry]
October Vagabonds by Richard le Gallienne audiobook. Genre: poetry Richard and his friend Colin must sadly return from their distant hermitage to New York City at summer's end. However, rather than take the train on the 430 mile trip to the city, the two decide to walk the route, for as Richard stated: 'Don't you hate the idea of being hurled along in a train, and suddenly shot into the city again, like a package through a tube?' Certainly a lengthy walk it would be, but the two decide that the trip itself can be the most rewarding, and their trek begins. Along the way, they meet people they never would have met; they witness landscape, nature and habitat which they wouldn't have otherwise seen; and they learn about themselves and their place in the world which they may not have otherwise comprehended. A clever travelogue of two artistic types from first person point of view. Ep 917Dhammapada by Buddha ~ Full Audiobook [religion]
Dhammapada by Buddha audiobook. Genre: religion The Dhammapada is a compact, powerful collection of verses attributed to the Buddha and preserved within the Buddhist tradition as a guide to living with clarity, restraint, and compassion. Arranged in thematic chapters, its short teachings move from the inner landscape of thought and intention to the outward consequences of speech and action, showing how suffering arises and how it can be eased. Through vivid images and memorable aphorisms, the text follows the path from confusion to understanding: training the mind, meeting anger without hatred, loosening attachment, and cultivating mindful attention in everyday life. Rather than telling a single story, it offers a steady voice of counsel that speaks to common human struggles - fear, desire, pride, grief, and restlessness - and points toward freedom through ethical conduct, meditation, and wisdom. Listeners will encounter recurring themes such as karma, impermanence, and the disciplined life of the awakened person, along with practical encouragement for householders and seekers alike. Whether approached as spiritual poetry or as a handbook for practice, the Dhammapada invites reflection and personal application, verse by verse. Ep 914Studies in Pessimism by Arthur Schopenhauer ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]
Studies in Pessimism by Arthur Schopenhauer audiobook. Genre: philosophy Arthur Schopenhauer, an early 19th century philosopher, made significant contributions to metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics. His work also informed theories of evolution and psychology, largely through his theory of the will to power – a concept which Nietzsche famously adopted and developed. Despite this, he is today, as he was during his life, overshadowed by his contemporary, Hegel. Schopenhauer's social/psychological views, put forth in this work and in others, are directly derived from his metaphysics, which was strongly influenced by Eastern thought. His pessimism forms an interesting and perhaps questionable contrast with his obvious joy in self-expression, both in the elegance of his prose and in his practice of playing the flute nightly. His brilliance, poetry, and crushing pessimism can be seen immediately in this work, as for example in this claim from the first chapter: 'The pleasure in this world, it has been said, outweighs the pain; or, at any rate, there is an even balance between the two. If the reader wishes to see shortly whether this statement is true, let him compare the respective feelings of two animals, one of which is engaged in eating the other.' We see also, in this work, his misogyny, as for example in his claim that 'as lions are provided with claws and teeth, and elephants and boars with tusks, . . . so Nature has equipped woman, for her defence and protection, with the arts of dissimulation; and all the power which Nature has conferred upon man in the shape of physical strength and reason, has been bestowed upon women in this form.' Given his opening comment, the translator, T.B. Saunders, seems to have been at least somewhat sympathetic to this perspective. Genre: family Step into the green and bustling countryside of Beatrix Potter's England in Treasury of Beatrix Potter, a beloved collection of classic tales where animals wear coats, take tea, and get into very human trouble. Ep 912Adeline Mowbray by Amelia Opie ~ Full Audiobook [tragedy]
Adeline Mowbray by Amelia Opie audiobook. Genre: tragedy In Amelia Opie's Adeline Mowbray, a brilliant, warm-hearted young woman comes of age under the influence of bold new ideas about reason, independence, and marriage. Raised by a mother who prizes enlightened principles over convention, Adeline is encouraged to question the social rules that govern love and respectability. When she encounters the charismatic writer and thinker Glenmurray, Adeline is drawn into a relationship that seems to promise moral sincerity without the constraints of law or ceremony. But the world beyond the salon is less forgiving than the world of theory. As Adeline tries to live honestly according to her beliefs, she faces gossip, legal vulnerability, and the quiet cruelty of polite society - pressures that test her pride, her compassion, and her sense of self. Moving between intimate domestic scenes and public scrutiny, the novel follows Adeline's shifting friendships, painful reckonings, and hard-won insight into the gap between ideals and lived experience. At once a critique of hypocrisy and a portrait of a woman struggling to define her own life, Opie's story asks what it costs to defy custom, and who pays the price when principle collides with prejudice. Ep 911The Adventures of a Dog, and a Good Dog, Too by Alfred Elwes ~ Full Audiobook [family]
The Adventures of a Dog, and a Good Dog, Too by Alfred Elwes audiobook. Genre: family Told as the autobiography of a streetwise dog named Job, The Adventures of a Dog, and a Good Dog, Too begins in the curious city of Caneville, where dogs have their own society, rivalries, and rules. Job grows up hungry and unwanted, learning to scavenge, avoid bullies, and survive rough treatment without letting bitterness harden him. Framed by an introduction from the feline editor Miss Minette Gattina, Job's plainspoken account follows him through a string of trials - quarrels over food, fights he never sought but cannot always escape, sudden changes of fortune, and moments when courage means choosing restraint instead of revenge. Along the way, Job discovers how easily strength can become cruelty, and how difficult it is to stay honest when the world rewards swagger and violence. As danger rises in Caneville, including a sweeping natural emergency that tests every creature's instincts, Job is pushed toward a life defined not by luck but by duty. Part animal adventure, part moral fable, this 19th century tale celebrates loyalty, compassion, and the hard-earned dignity of being good when no one is watching. Ep 910The Mind and the Brain by Alfred Binet ~ Full Audiobook [science]
The Mind and the Brain by Alfred Binet audiobook. Genre: science In The Mind and the Brain, pioneering psychologist Alfred Binet explores one of the most enduring questions in human inquiry: how does the inner life of thoughts, feelings, and will relate to the physical organ of the brain? Writing at a moment when experimental psychology and neurology were rapidly reshaping medicine and philosophy, Binet guides listeners through the major debates of his era, weighing materialist explanations against views that defend the autonomy of mental life. He examines perception, memory, attention, and personality, asking what can be measured, what can be inferred, and where scientific description reaches its limits. Along the way, Binet introduces key clinical and laboratory observations, including cases of brain injury and disorders of consciousness, to show how changes in the nervous system can illuminate the structure of experience. Clear, argumentative, and often surprisingly modern in its caution about easy answers, the book offers a thoughtful framework for anyone curious about the origins of consciousness and the methods we use to study it. This is a brisk, idea-driven work that connects early psychology, philosophy of mind, and emerging brain science into a single, provocative investigation. Ep 908Under the Andes by Rex Stout ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]
Under the Andes by Rex Stout audiobook. Genre: mystery Under the Andes was written by Rex Stout years before his creation of the immensely popular Nero Wolfe series of novels, and while perhaps his future writing style is still blossoming, certainly his knack for weaving a fantastic tale of mystery and adventure will have most readers anxious for the next phase of adventure at every turn. The story finds two brothers and a pretty female companion on a journey which eventually takes them to a series of underground caves under the Andes of South America, where they encounter a lost tribe of Incas who have apparently survived hundreds of years oblivious of the outside world. The apparent 'king' of the tribe has become infatuated with the fair-skinned female intruder of the group and, well, suffice it to say there's a lot of action, attempted escapes, heroism, and peculiar interactions between all, reminiscent of H. Rider Haggard with a touch of Edgar Rice Burroughs. One desperate night later, Clayton gambles everything on a stolen uniform, a borrowed identity, and a plan to slip past steel walls, security routines, and suspicious officers. citeturn3view1turn3view2 But survival aboard the ship demands more than hiding his name: Clayton must work, improvise, and keep his fear in check while Mars' harsh rules echo in his muscles and his mind. Tight, tense, and morally thorny, Randall Garrett's classic tale asks what exile does to a man - and whether escape is ever the same as redemption. citeturn0search1 For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate) (00:00:00) Chapter 01 (00:36:23) Chapter 02 (01:26:05) Chapter 03 (01:53:09) Chapter 04 (02:04:31) Chapter 05 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 902Nor Iron Bars A Cage. by Randall Garrett ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
Nor Iron Bars A Cage. by Randall Garrett audiobook. Genre: scifi In a near-future New York where hypoguns and inertia-drive aircraft are everyday tools, Inspector Royall faces a problem no amount of manpower can solve: the repeat violent offender who cycles through the courts until someone gets hurt again. Royall is part of a controversial pilot program that offers an alternative to iron bars - not by locking criminals away, but by reshaping what they fear. Under the guidance of Dr. Brownlee and his team, convicted predators, arsonists, and reckless killers can be diverted from prison into psychiatric therapy that installs powerful, specific inhibitions: a firebug who cannot bear the sight of flame, a brawler who is terrified his fists will shatter, a drunk whose first sip of alcohol becomes unthinkable. When Chief Inspector Acrington, a visiting British aristocrat and senior lawman, comes to investigate the program, Royall must defend its spotless record while a brutal child-murder case and a newly captured offender force the city to confront the hardest questions. Is preventing harm worth tampering with a mind? And when safety depends on conditioning, who decides how much of a person can be taken away in the name of justice? Damned If You Don’t by Randall Garrett audiobook. Genre: scifi We've all heard of the wonderful invention that the Big Corporation or the Utilities suppressed? The one that would revolutionize society with it's simplicity? Well usually, that Wonderful Invention won't work, actually. But what if there really was one or two like that? Would the oil industry, or the power conglomerates, or the auto monopolies actually be nasty enough to suppress something that would help the rest of the world just so they could go on making profits? Well of course they would, silly! But then there is another possibility, one that is explored in the uniquely wonderful way of Randall Garrett. And one that you may not suspect. Ep 900But, I Don’t Think by Randall Garrett ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
But, I Don’t Think by Randall Garrett audiobook. Genre: scifi The title is obscure and a bit unsettling I admit; what could it possible mean? Randall Garrett wrote a story here that had me blissfully going in the wrong direction until he quietly yanked the rug from under my feet and made me fume a bit with irritation and amazement. I loved it and hated it because it did not end the way I wanted it to but the way it obviously should. The society and culture in the galaxy he has presupposed is as fascinating as the story itself and I can only hope he expanded on it in other books somewhere. The publisher quotes another story by R. Phillip Dachboden to indicate what he meant 'As every thinking man knows, every slave always yearns for the freedom his master denies him... But, gentlemen,' said the Physician, 'I really don't think we can consider any religion which has human sacrifice as an integral part as a humane religion.' 'At least,' added the Painter with a chuckle, 'not as far as the victim is concerned.' The Philosopher looked irritated. 'Bosh! What if the victim likes it that way?' Anything You Can Do by Randall Garrett audiobook. Genre: scifi When a damaged alien craft crashes into the Siberian tundra, the survivor is not a little green diplomat but the Nipe - a centipede-like being with terrifying strength, speed, and a mindset that treats humanity as both obstacle and resource. citeturn2view0 The first witness, forester Wang Kulichenko, can only watch in horror as the incident becomes the opening move in a global emergency. citeturn2view0 As the Nipe slips away and leaves a trail of panic, Earth's leaders face a grim calculation: killing the intruder might be easy, but letting it live could unlock knowledge that would reshape human science. citeturn0search2 Their solution is as audacious as it is ethically fraught - build a human who can match the alien. Inside a tightly controlled Institute, a handpicked candidate is pushed through extreme conditioning and biological enhancement, only to discover that becoming humanity's answer to the Nipe comes with unsettling gaps in memory, shifting loyalties, and the creeping fear that the project is changing more than just muscle and reflexes. citeturn2view0 As the world waits for its engineered champion to be ready, the central question sharpens: how far can humans remake themselves to win, without losing what makes them human in the first place? Ep 898Anchorite by Randall Garrett ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
Anchorite by Randall Garrett audiobook. Genre: scifi Randall Garrett sticks a sharp needle into our government and society in this wonderful story. He projects the current trends towards paternalistic government into the future. Yes, we have attained a world government and everyone is equal whether they want to be or not; everyone is taken care of no matter how incompetent, stupid or sleazy they are and everyone is out to undermine everyone else. The author predicts (sadly only too well) what the trends of today will eventually produce if allowed to continue. But wait! there is hope in the asteroid belt where jerks and incompetents are weeded out by hard physical laws and only those who possess common sense and the ability to actually survive are allowed to govern. But will the Earth government allow this to continue? Of course not. Listen to this great story to have a peek into the future. Ep 896In Tune With The Infinite by Ralph Waldo Trine ~ Full Audiobook [self help]
In Tune With The Infinite by Ralph Waldo Trine audiobook. Genre: self help In Tune With The Infinite is Ralph Waldo Trine's classic New Thought guide to living with greater peace, power, and purpose by aligning the inner life with a larger spiritual reality. Written in clear, uplifting language, it invites listeners to consider how thoughts, beliefs, and habitual attitudes shape health, work, relationships, and the quality of everyday experience. Trine argues that a calm, centered mind can become receptive to an infinite source of strength and wisdom, and he offers practical reflections on cultivating faith, courage, gratitude, and goodwill. Along the way, he challenges fear, worry, resentment, and self-doubt as forces that pull us out of harmony, replacing them with the steady discipline of constructive thinking and compassionate action. Part inspirational philosophy and part daily-life manual, the book weaves together spiritual principle and practical application, urging listeners to test its ideas in the ordinary moments where character is formed. The central conflict is internal: whether we will be ruled by reactive emotions and limiting beliefs, or learn to live from a deeper, steadier center that opens the door to clearer judgment, stronger resilience, and a more generous life. Ep 895The Man from Glengarry by Ralph Connor ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]
The Man from Glengarry by Ralph Connor audiobook. Genre: adventure With international book sales in the millions, Ralph Connor was the best-known Canadian novelist of the first two decades of the Twentieth Century. The Man from Glengarry was his most popular and accomplished work. Immediately after its publication in 1901, the novel spent several months in the top ranks of the New York Times 'Books in Demand' list. We follow the story of Ranald Macdonald, who is shaped by family and community in rural eastern Ontario in the early decades after Canadian confederation. This is a book about the making of men, but also, ultimately, about the making of a nation, as the mature Ranald moves west to take a leadership role in the fledgling province of British Columbia. The Man from Glengarry features adventure and romance, and is, above all, a work of serious moral purpose. 'Ralph Connor' was the pen-name of the Reverend Charles Gordon, a prominent Canadian minister, and his stories are woven through with his religious convictions. His is a two-fisted Christianity — or, as he said in his autobiography, a religion that can appeal to 'red-blooded' people who aren't afraid to engage in physical conflict for causes that they know are right. Ep 894Glengarry School Days by Ralph Connor ~ Full Audiobook [drama]
Glengarry School Days by Ralph Connor audiobook. Genre: drama Set in the rugged Scottish-Canadian community of Glengarry, Ralph Connor's Glengarry School Days follows the arrival of a young, idealistic schoolmaster determined to bring order, learning, and a larger sense of purpose to a one-room country school. He soon discovers that the classroom is only the beginning: rivalries between farm boys, family feuds, prideful clan loyalties, and the rough demands of frontier life spill into every lesson and every game. At the center are the students themselves - bright, stubborn, and fiercely independent - who test their teacher's patience while quietly needing his guidance. As the school year unfolds, friendships harden under pressure, a few spirited leaders emerge, and the community is forced to confront what it truly values: strength or character, tradition or growth, winning or fairness. Told with humor, warmth, and a strong moral backbone, Connor paints a vivid portrait of youth on the edge of adulthood, where courage is measured as much by kindness as by grit, and where a small schoolhouse can become the proving ground for an entire generation. Ep 893Bacon by R. W. Church ~ Full Audiobook [biography]
Bacon by R. W. Church audiobook. Genre: biography In this concise, vivid volume from the English Men of Letters series, Victorian scholar and churchman R. W. Church traces the extraordinary contradictions of Francis Bacon (1561-1626): philosopher of a new science, master of English prose, and ambitious servant of power in the volatile world of Elizabethan and Jacobean politics. Church follows Bacon from a brilliant, restless youth and early legal promise into the rivalries of court, where patronage, strategy, and survival often clash with principle. Along the way, he makes Bacon's big intellectual wager feel urgent and human: that knowledge should be rebuilt from the ground up through disciplined observation and experiment, so that humanity might gain practical command of nature. With clear explanations of Bacon's major writings and aims, and a steady eye for the pressures that shaped his choices, Church examines how a mind devoted to public good and intellectual reform could also accept compromises that darken its legacy. The result is both an accessible introduction to Bacon's ideas and a probing character study of greatness tested by temptation, ambition, and the costs of living at the center of power. Ep 889The Sensitive Man by Poul William Anderson ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
The Sensitive Man by Poul William Anderson audiobook. Genre: scifi Poul Anderson delves into the realm of human potential in this exciting story and asks some penetrating questions for us to think about. What if psychology finally enabled people to even partially control all those automatic reactions of our minds and bodies? What if we were not slaves to anger, fear, emotions, hormones, blood pressure and the thousand other things that our bodies 'take care of' from instant to instant? What if those things could be brought under the control even partially of our reason and minds? In this story one man stood between a power-hungry cabal and their world mastery—but a man of, shall we say, unusual talents. A block the size of a book can store staggering amounts of energy - and, worse (or better), the recipe is simple enough that anyone with basic chemicals and a kitchen oven can make it. Simon imagines patents, progress, and a cleaner world powered by compact energy storage. Then the idea escapes the lab. A teenage hot-rodder sees an engine-free future. Entrepreneurs smell instant fortunes. Utilities, fuel companies, and politicians realize their control of power itself is slipping away. As homemade capacitite spreads like gossip, the modern economy begins to wobble, and Simon finds himself trapped between personal pride, public need, and the accelerating consequences of an invention that cannot be recalled. Snowball is a sharp, fast-moving classic of social science fiction about technology's unintended ripple effects, and how quickly a miracle can become a crisis when it belongs to everyone. Ep 886Sentiment, Inc. by Poul William Anderson ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
Sentiment, Inc. by Poul William Anderson audiobook. Genre: scifi When young engineer Colin Fraser falls hard for Judy Harkness, a rising actress with big-city ambition, their long-distance courtship feels like the start of a steady, ordinary future. Then, without warning, Judy announces a whirlwind engagement to Matthew Snyder, a wealthy older man she barely tolerated, and her personality seems subtly, frighteningly off. Colin cannot accept that love can flip so cleanly, so he follows the trail to a sleek, secretive outfit with an innocuous name: Sentiment, Inc. There he encounters Dr. Robert Kennedy, a brilliant researcher whose work suggests that emotions are not as untouchable as people like to believe. If feelings are built from networks of associations, what happens when those associations can be rearranged on command? As Colin digs deeper, his personal heartbreak turns into a confrontation with a technology that could redefine consent, loyalty, and even identity. Part psychological puzzle, part classic science-fiction thriller, Sentiment, Inc. asks how much of the heart is truly ours - and what a society might become if desire itself could be engineered.
