Ep 502502 Christmas is the Vulnerability of God, A Guided Christian Meditation on Psalms 147:15-20 Recenter with Christ
Bible verses for Meditation: Psalms 147 NABRE 15 He sends his command to earth; his word runs swiftly! 16 Thus he makes the snow like wool, and spreads the frost like ash; 17 He disperses hail like crumbs. Who can withstand his cold? 18 Yet when again he issues his command, it melts them; he raises his winds and the waters flow. 19 He proclaims his word to Jacob, his statutes and laws to Israel. 20 He has not done this for any other nation; of such laws they know nothing. Hallelujah! NIV He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. 16 He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. 17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast? 18 He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow. 19 He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel. 20 He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the Lord. Meditation: God is the ultimate commander. He is the ideal leader, president, king or any other title. His word can cross the universe faster than light. He is not bound by our understanding of the laws of nature. He freezes the earth or melts it. He commands the elements and they obey. With all the power he controls he presents His word to us. He tells us what he wants from us. He desires our faithfulness, He desires our hope in His grace. Imagine God as the most perfect loving ruler who has invited us to his table to eat. He can control mountains and storms and he patiently asks us to follow. His restraint in dealing with us disobedient humans is a testament to His love and goodness. He invites you to follow Him. Ponder in this moment how willing are you to follow God's commands? Are you willing to accept Him as your sovereign ruler? He is our Savior and our Lord. He loves and he demands. He asks and he answers. God's love for your is profound. Not a begrudging love, but an overflowing one. One not of desperation but of power and grace. He loves us. He loves you. Praise be to God for the gift of his unmatched love. Happy 500th Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Meditation: Nature is inspiring with its beauty. I often look at sunsets or mountains and rejoice in the beauty of the earth God created. Scientific studies show that as humans spend time in nature it is healing for them both biochemically and emotionally. God's creation is amazing and glorious. Ive had the chance to ride horses a few times and spend time looking at them face to face. They are glorious creatures with intuitive hearts. Yet as we picture the most beautiful scene in nature, this is not why God created the earth. He did not create the earth to impress himself. God doesn't care about horsepower. He is not impressed by the things we can build and our strength. As we see and ant moving a spec of food, that is not something that rivals our power and yet the chasm between us and God is far wider than that. What does God delight in? He takes pleasure in them that hope in his mercy and place their faith in Him. Those who have appropriate respect and adoration for God. He created us with the understanding that we would have the weaknesses that we do, yet he did anyway. He knew there would be hope for us if we came to Him. He delights in helping us. He rejoices in seeing us draw near to Him. He created us to learn how to love Him and to learn to trust Him. The next time you see a beautiful scene from nature perhaps give a thankful prayer to God giving gratitude for it and recommit to show him what he finds pleasing, a soul who fears and place your hope in His mercy. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. What do you say about yourself?" 23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." Meditation: John is an amazing example to me. Not once does he take glory for himself. Not once does he claim to be more important than he is. He recognizes the true power that is though Jesus Christ. He realizes what his role is in the great eternal struggle and he rejoices in it. He rejoices in the Lord. The need for his humility does not appear to cause him to hate himself but to value God highly. It is not necessary for him to diminish the importance of his work or the things God is able to do through him. We can take an example from John. He rejected the pure light of God, the light of Christ. He shows us how we can take that light and place it on a candlestick. We can both rejoice in God, give gratitude for Him and what He does in our lives, and recognize the good work he does for us and through us. We can do this without taking pride into our hearts or making things about us. The clarion call of the world is that we should seek what is good for us, but the irony is that as we learn to work with God's Spirit we have less of a need to find our value outside of God's love. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. John 1 NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, "This is the one I spoke about when I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'") 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. NASB 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John *testified about Him and called out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who is coming after me has proved to be my superior, because He existed before me.'" 16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time; God the only Son, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him. Meditation: The Word became flesh. The creator, the creative force of the universe, had been with them in human form. John was at the mount of transfiguration and saw the Glory of Christ, in whatever form He was able to show that glory to humans. There were so many prophecies about His coming. There ware so many miracles shown. Sit now in the assurance that the God has been moving things from the beginning. From everlasting to everlasting. Numbers break down when compared to the immensity of what it means for the Word, which was before the universe was, to have walked on earth. He who was in the bosom of the father. Yet this was not a mere interesting fact or a vacation on Jesus's part. It was to do something He very much intended to do since the beginning. He gave his grace to us. He gave the law through Moses, knowing that it would be superseded by the fullness of His Gospel. Ponder for a moment what it means to receive of His fulness. Have you received of His fullness? During this meditation ponder and ask the Lord to know what you can do to recognize or receive that fullness. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation: Many times we ponder what wisdom we can apply to our life. We appropriately seek knowledge and understanding in order to improve our situation and the world around us. To do this we apply wisdom from various traditions. Psychological science blesses many people's lives, medicine heals the body, science advances human understanding, political perspectives can guide our civic activity. These things can be a blessing from God. Yet we need to be mindful in how we absorb these philosophies into our lives. If we are not careful we can swallow these worldview and let them guide our faith and believe in the most High God. It is helpful to remember. The world rejected Christ. The world did not understand him. He came into his own and they did not receive him. Yet it is through Him that salvation is possible. It is through Jesus that we will eventually rise victorious over this world and this life. He has given us the sacred trust to be His children. We should be careful to place God and a right understanding of God at the pinnacle of our ideologies and activity. Always be curious about how the views that you have reconcile with God. Allow His love to guide your worldview. We are born of God. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Meditation: In the Word was life and light. Gods life is the light of all of us. The darkness cannot overcome that light. That light cannot be overcome by darkness. When we are down and we feel darkness all around we seek to be encircled by Gods light. God has promised this light to those who trust and follow him. Our goal then is to embrace the light. For each of us we seek to reflect the light of Jesus Christ. What does it mean for us to be the light of Christ? NASB 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" 10 As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?" 11 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. NASB 8 The Lord will send His goodness in the daytime; And His song will be with me in the night, A prayer to the God of my life. 9 I will say to God my rock, "Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go about mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" 10 As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries taunt me, While they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" 11 Why are you in despair, my soul? And why are you restless within me? Wait for God, for I will again praise Him For the help of His presence, my God. Meditation: God makes his blessings and goodness available at all times. Yet at times we may feel that He has turned his back on us. This echoes back to Psalm 22 which states "My God My God, why hast thou forsaken me." A Psalm that would be Quoted by Jesus himself while on the Cross. The most profound message in Christianity is not that God gets us out of every mess when we want him to or when it seems necessary for us, it is that God allows things to be done for His purposes. When Jesus Christ prayed in the garden of Gethsemane before his death, he asked for the cup to be removed from Him. Finally on the cross as his sacrifice was near complete he felt forsaken. This feeling is not a measure of God's failure since it was uttered by the Redeemer Himself. Our current struggles are not a reflection of our righteousness. The answer to this conundrum is not that God is failing or that we are, but that God continues worthy of praise and love, even when we don't understand the working of His world. Be patient. Ignore the taunting of the enemy and others who don't understand your faith. Wait for God. Praise him His presence will heal. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Bible verses for Meditation: Psalms 42 NIV 1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" ESV 1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?" Meditation: The Great Christian writer CS Lewis wrote that we as humans have a God size hole in our heart. This scripture begins to lay the basics of our need for God. We have a thirst for the kind of unconditional love that only a perfect God can provide. There is nothing in this world that can fill the place of God in our soul. Sometimes when we think of our need before God we focus exclusively on our guilt and need for redemption. These things are true but I believe it is even deeper than this. The light we rejoice in, the happiness, joy, fulfillment, love, all these things are exemplified in God. They are represented as a reflection of only a fraction of the glory of God. The highest ideals we could possibly seek in life are perfect in God. As people wrestle with the Goodness of God they are really only wrestling with the Goodness of what they understand. The source of light and good does not need to be judged by the imperfection of human understanding. This is the same God that has offered you salvation and remains dedicated to your spiritual transformation, to your development in His love and grace. He remains willing and able to love you perfectly. Don't allow others to destroy your relationship with the source of true love and acceptance. Do not allow the temporary troubles of this world distract your mind and your heart away from the real and undying love of a perfect God. Rejoice in the Goodness of the Lord and embrace our need and thirst for Him. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. If you feel comfortable to do so, I invite you to close your eyes. Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation: Breathe and direct your thoughts to connecting with God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Bible verses for Meditation: NIV 8 First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them"—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. NKJV 8 Previously saying, "Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them" (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Meditation: The Enemy wants to divert us from peace and happiness. He wants us to fall for one of two lies. 1. That we are already exactly as we need to be and need not improve 2. We are so hideous and irredeemable that we may as well fully embrace sin. Both these lies attempt to subvert Gods messages in scripture. 1. God's guiding grace is how we overcome the sin about us. 2. To have faith in Christ is to continue walking with Him as He continues to perfect us. The law points to this greater thing ahead as it says earlier in the chapter. He planned for us to grow together with Him. That is how Grace works in our lives. Embrace the loving nature of God, how he loves us just as we are and will support us to become better than we could have imagined. Through God we can be made pure. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. NKJV 10 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. Meditation: During the Old Testament times animal sacrifice was a major part of the worship of the one true God. It was a recognition of the people's need for God. The Law of Moses, which came from God, commanded it. Yet even as God laid out that plan there was a plan to replace animal sacrifice with the true sacrifice of Christ. Recently I have been thinking about changes and new things. That brought me to this scripture. The Law then was pointing to something much greater. It pointed to a relationship with the Messiah, with Jesus Christ who will build us perfectly as our hearts are changed. Whatever relationship you have with God, it is only a shadow of the beauty to come. We won't understand that until we see what He makes of us. When we die and our bodies are perfectly restored and reunited with loved ones and Christ. Only then will we truly understand what good things he spoke of. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. 20 All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return. NABRE 18 I said in my heart: As for human beings, it is God's way of testing them and of showing that they are in themselves like beasts. 19 For the lot of mortals and the lot of beasts is the same lot: The one dies as well as the other. Both have the same life breath. Human beings have no advantage over beasts, but all is vanity. 20 Both go to the same place; both were made from the dust, and to the dust they both return. Meditation: This scripture addresses the aspect of our humanity that is animalistic. Sometimes when we hear of scientific analysis of humans being animals we resist. We remember scripture that calls us children of God. Yet this scripture points out an incredibly valuable thing. Without God and His spirit all is pointless. With God's influence to redeem and purchase us, we have infinite worth as children of God. When I address deep breathing, or relaxation in this podcast it is with this in mind. Relaxation is not saving us. It doesn't purge our sin. It can, however, help us get out of God's way in showing us a better way. For example I was reading a book called the oxygen advantage. The book outlines how breathlessness is almost always not a shortage of oxygen but an overabundance of CO2. Oddly enough CO2 in our blood dilates our veins as well; it chemically helps oxygen travel to the brain, organs and muscles. So the point is to learn to do breath holding exercises to get better at managing higher levels of CO2 in the blood to help us stay oxygenated and more calm. None of that will change the content of your soul. It is valuable in fitness and reduction of anxiety but will not take away our sin. So the moral of the story is that we can manage that part of us that is similar to the animals but we should learn to rely on God to cleanse our soul as we draw near to our Savior. May we have success firstly in joining with Christ, then learning tricks and tips to help our earthly experience be calmer and avoid all the suffering we can. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? NRSVA 11 We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. 12 There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. 13 In return—I speak as to children—open wide your hearts also. 14 Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship is there between light and darkness? Meditation: A yoke is the cross bar that is used between two beasts of burden. If a person wants to connect two animals to carry a weight they put the yoke across their shoulders and then the burden is connected to the yoke. If the animals are going in two different directions then they will not move the yoke forward and do any meaningful work. Paul makes a comparison between faith and a yoke. For those who accept Christ as their Savior and Lord should be attempting to move in the direction Christ commands. It is Christ that equally yokes us. He guides the balance of the burden We should be yoked with those headed in the same direction as we are. This is not to say that we should treat others unkindly. This is not to say that those who have not yet received the truth of Christ should be avoided. The Command Christ recaptured in the second great commandment says we should love one another with all our hearts. This is what leads to a desire to share God's word with others. Our goal then is to build fellowship with people who can help us craft a better future. It is hard to move to a better future while denying the existence of God or the truth of the Gospel. During the last few years so many people have become detached from meaningful fellowship. Many people have become unyoked with anyone or settled for relationships that are not moving in the direction they want to go. May God inspire and direct our hearts to find more fellowship with others headed in the same direction as where we want to go spiritually. May we focus on how to build more meaningful fellowship in our relationships. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put my spirit within you so that you walk in my statutes, observe my ordinances, and keep them. 28 You will live in the land I gave to your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will deliver you from all your impurities. I will summon the grain and make it plentiful; I will not send famine against you. Meditation: I love this scripture. I do, however, often read it in isolation, apart from the preceding verses. God promises to give us a new heart and to place a new spirit within us. He will remove the heart of stone. When viewed in the context of the whole scripture this is referring to God restoring Israel after its captivity into Babylon that we saw in the previous episode. God said he did that for the sake of His own name. He also makes it clean that the people must Choose God. This seems to imply that God is not going to do involuntary heart surgery. It is directly tied to our willingness to yield to the commandments of God. The New Testament gives more insight into deeper truths about having the Spirit with us. As we become aware of how complicit we are in our own sin, we can then apply the healing balm of Gilead and help Christ in to clean up the mess in our own heart. The first step is to become willing to change toward what God wants, accept Christ's redemptive power to transform us, then we are ready to change. There is an important question to ask ourselves first. When we read of the redemption of collective Israel it can be very valuable to consider the state of our own heart. Do we want God to actually remove our sin? Many times there are parts of our sinful nature that we secretly hold onto. We may be dishonest with ourselves or perhaps we just maintain guilty pleasures. Do you want to change in the same way God wants you to change? Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. NRSVA 22 Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23 I will sanctify my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord, says the Lord God, when through you I display my holiness before their eyes. 24 I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. Meditation: Many times when we hear of the great acts that God has done for us we hear that God did them for us. We hear powerful professions of the Love of God. The inriquit and eternal plan he has made. We know of his intentions to save us before the foundations of the Earth we laid. He sent his Son to die for us because he loved us. These are powerful ideas. They are rooted in the truth of the gospel. God loves us. This is undeniably true. We love him because he first loved us, a scripture says in 1 John 4:19. Yet in our comfortable moments when we are overconfident of our own goodness we can be tempted to think that this is the only way it could be. The world tells us we deserve a life filled with happiness and ease, free of guilt regardless of what we do. Yet this misses a much more profound truth. God loves us, first because who God is, and in some ways, in spite of what we have been. This is far from a demeaning idea. It shows us our true value is not an argument of the situation of our birth, our past, the temptations that come into our hearts. Our value is determined by God. In the end of Ezekiel we read of prophecies where God will redeem Israel, for His Name's sake. It is because God's name is so valuable that we are able to be cleansed with God's water poured upon us. We can be cleaned from all our idols by Him. Yours and my salvation are therefore a matter of much more firm stuff than our own transitory identity. It is founded in the Name of God. In this moment invite Jesus Christ to guide your heart and be your savior. For the sake of His holy name he will cleanse you. Ep 457457 Free Form Christian Meditation on 2 Corinthians 7:9-11
2 Corinthians 7 NIV 9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
