Ep 652652 Thy Faith Hath Made Thee Whole, A Guided Christian Meditation on Matthew 9:20-22 with the Recenter With Christ app

652 Thy Faith Hath Made Thee Whole, A Guided Christian Meditation on Matthew 9:20-22 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in your life and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ. Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization. Get into a place where you can sit comfortably and uninterrupted for about 20 minutes. You should hopefully not be driving or anything tensing or unrelaxing. If you feel comfortable to do so, I invite you to close your eyes. Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation: Breathe and direct your thoughts to connecting with God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Scripture for Meditation Matthew 9 NIV 20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. NASB 20 And behold, a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind Him, and touched the border of His cloak; 21 for she was saying to herself, "If I only touch His cloak, I will get well." 22 But Jesus, turning and seeing her, said, "Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well." And at once the woman was made well. Meditation on Scripture: This whole Chapter is lined with the juxtaposition of Jesus's dual mission as healer and savior. His saving is more important than the healing. That saving comes through Him alone. It comes as we put our whole faith in Him. If genuine and real this faith in Jesus changes us. It is the beginning of a life with Christ. After being asked about fasting in the previous verses he is asked to go heal a sick girl, on the way there he encounters a crowd and in the middle of that crowd this woman. In the Gospel of Luke it shares a little more detail. This woman touched Jesus without talking to him first and was healed. Jesus stopped when this happened. He was not surprised by the healing. He was not impressed by the healing. She did not steal a blessing from Jesus. She was healed by her faith. We don't see anywhere in scripture where Jesus teaches that touching his robe will heal yet this woman had so much faith that it happened. Similarly we are healed from the greatest danger we face, our own sin. We are healed not by touching his clothes but by coming to trust Jesus completely. When we experience trouble in our life we can learn a lesson from this woman who, when afflicted, sought out jesus. She went to where He was. She drew near to Him even though she felt that he didn't even know she was alive, He did. Similarly God knows the details of your struggle. Draw near to him. Trust your heart to Jesus. Trust that he can heal your soul, and then do the important work of walking in the path He has laid out. Give him the worries and cares of your heart. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Final Question: If you consider the invitation and command to persevere in the faith, what change in your life does that bring to your mind? NIV 14 Then John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?" 15 Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. 16 "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved." ESV 14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" 15 And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved." Meditation on Scripture: Fasting has been a valuable aspect of religious devotion for a very long time. I think at times we can get the wrong impression if we read this scripture and interpret that Jesus was somehow against fasting. We see elsewhere in scripture where Jesus fasted. Earlier in the same book of Matthew Jesus fasted for 40 days. Perhaps the more important question is not on the validity of fasting but on the individual devotion behind it. When fabric is new, it often has not fully shrunk and the patch would distort and pull the original garment. Similarly new wine that is still fermenting, has yeast that are still converting the sugars to alcohol so gas bubbles form and need to be vented which would not be possible in a wineskin that could not flex and stretch. Both of these processes described a natural response changed by exposure and age. This continues directly from the previous verses about how the sick need a physician. Similarly for the fast, not to please God but to call to memory our physical need. The question we can ask ourselves is this; is our religious devotion simply a matter of cold calculating rule following or is it a representation of the understanding of the process at work within us. God gives us scripture to show us how to live in such a way to invite Jesus into our hearts. True devotion helps us open our eyes to see. Ponder for a moment, how we can use fasting, prayer, study, even discipline of our actions, as a way of drawing near to God, as a form of worship? Not a form of negotiating favor from God, but as a desire to be swallowed up in God. Do we truly feel a love strong enough for God that we would mourn him if he was gone? If not perhaps we can seek that relationship with him by experience, by fasting and prayer. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. NASB 9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew sitting in the tax collector's office; and He *said to him, "Follow Me!" And he got up and followed Him. 10 Then it happened that as Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and began dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?" 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Now go and learn what this means: 'I desire compassion, rather than sacrifice,' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." KJV 9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. 10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Meditation on Scripture: After healing the paralytic man and also forgiving his sin, Jesus showed his ability and desire to heal the soul and the body. In this scripture Jesus calls Matthew and then reminds those who would question that decision that the sick are who need the healer. Each of us is the sick person in this story. WE are the one who was sick and is healed by Jesus. We are not the comfy healthy people who belong outside Jesus' hospital. With that said Jesus also indirectly proclaims himself the healer of body and soul. As we place our full faith in Jesus he heals our soul. As we learn to trust him, he can help the betterment of our bodies as well, if that is His purpose. This healing is actually part of the reason why I felt like I wanted to start this podcast. When I was a hospital chaplain I found profound resilience through meditation. It is the thing that helped me cope with the profound suffering I witnessed. I learned to trust in God to calm my soul and heal my emotions. Many people in our modern times struggle with anxiety or other forms of diagnosable mental health concerns. I want to honor the fact that God has infinite power and yet some very faithful people do not have their prayers answered in the way that hope to include the Apostle Paul. With that said, our responsibility is not to decide for God, what things he should do or not. A healthier mindset is to petition God in humility, work to maintain our health to the best of our ability, and then trust in God's grace and eternal care. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as tdirected by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. NRSVA 1 And after getting into a boat he crossed the water and came to his own town. Jesus Heals a Paralytic 2 And just then some people were carrying a paralysed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, 'Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.' 3 Then some of the scribes said to themselves, 'This man is blaspheming.' 4 But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, 'Why do you think evil in your hearts? Meditation on Scripture: This scripture tells of the account of Jesus healing a man. In another one of the Gospels this man was lowered from the roof. As the people looked on wondering what Jesus was to do he did not heal the man right away. Jesus forgave his sins. This is interesting as it was not what Jesus always did. In this case he chose to forgive the man first. In time he did both but, which one is more meaningful? Which one makes a bigger difference eternally? If you were a paralytic and you could only choose one, which one would you choose? The teachers of the law, challenged him. According to the Law of Moses this was problematic. Only God could forgive sins. They did not understand who Jesus was? We have the benefit of the written word, the telling of the Gospel story and a long tradition of understanding. Imagine if someone were to tell you that they could forgive your sins and it wasn't Jesus. You would not believe them. That is what these lawyers thought. They didn't understand the gospel. They were looking at things from the wrong perspective. Jesus condemned their hearts. He knew them. He knew why they struggled. They chose not to believe. The healing was not enough to even more them in the right direction. What is easier to do, to say a phrase or to heal someone? It would be easier to say those words even if they didn'. Fortunately for us we are not forced to wonder and grope for forgiveness. We don't need to hope that someone lowers us down a roof and be forgiven face to face. We may or may not receive the healing that we seek but we certainly can receive forgiveness if we ask it from Jesus. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." 23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. NASB 21 Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us— 22 beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection." 23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen 25 to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." 26 And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. Meditation on Scripture: Upon the tragic betrayal and death of Judas Iscariot, there were only 11 apostles. Peter quoted scripture referencing filling the office. God had plans and those included another apostle. Two names were brought forward for consideration, seeking the guidance of God. The 11 prayed and sought out God's guidance then left the decision in the hands of God. God guides his work according to God's needs. The Apostle was not chosen by the ways of the world or according to the means that humans reason. It was a choice of God. God guides His work, to include the grand and small parts. God has plans for your life. At times we think our plans are what guides us. We think that because we have minds that can think, that what we reason and ration is the only matter for consideration. Or in those cases when we do defer to the knowledge of God we oftentimes think that it must be something we can understand. In reality most of the time God's plans are far beyond our understanding. It is left to us to do the best we can. With God's assistance we can understand enough to be able to guide our choices and then fiercely pursue abiding by it. Pause now for a moment and consider what God may be guiding you toward in your life. To what are you called? In what areas do you seek more clarity of His call and will? If you feel comfortable to do so, I invite you to close your eyes. Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation: Breathe and direct your thoughts to connecting with God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Scripture for Meditation ACTS 1 NIV 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. KJV 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. Meditation on Scripture: Recently I went to Texas to observe another total solar eclipse. During totality the sun is completely covered by the shadow of the moon. I was dark and it appeared as night. After it had passed I continued to look up at the sun with the solar glasses with awe and wonder. And this as something that had predicted with exactness and I have seen it before. I had a solid understanding of what was happening and yet I was in awe. When I read this passage I imagined a group of people staring into heaven in wonder, struggling to come to terms with their expectations so radically being altered and then to have Jesus come and go into the sky. This was not how they expected it to be. It did not meet what they had guessed would happen. I can only imagine the wonder they experienced. I can only imagine that after asking about him restoring the Kingdom of Israel he then refused to answer the question they asked in they way they wanted the answer. Then he has the ability to come and go from beyond this form of existence. I visualize a group of people staring up. Waiting in expectation of what would come next. Then as they are gazing, two people in white clothes (who seem to be heavenly beings) ask them why they are looking up to heaven. Jesus would come again. I often wonder what they were thinking. How much did they understand about what was to come? It is likely that before the Holy Spirit came, they really had no idea what was coming. There are times when we don't understand God's next move. In fact that is probably much more often that we would like to admit. There are undoubtedly times when things are much harder than we expect. Equally there are times when things have been planned with much more precision that we could have expected also. I hope that as those moments happen that we can peer into heaven with wonder. Not with doubt but with humble expectation of the fulfillment of all the words written in the Bible. I hope that as the moments of wonder pass, that we can constantly turn our minds back to the coming of Jesus, as was recommended here. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. 636 It Is Not For You to Know God's Timeline, A Guided Christian Meditation on Acts 1:7-9 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in your life and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ. Scripture for Meditation ACTS 1 NIV 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. ESV 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. Meditation on Scripture: It is clear that when we become believers our desires and preferences do not dethrone God's. Many times we have genuine questions about God's timing and those questions are not answered in the way we would wonder. In fact the more we feel we should understand the more confusion we can feel. Nowhere is this more focused than the coming of the Kingdom of God. Scholars and believer's throughout the centuries have wondered and pondered and tried to crack the code of the times and seasons of God but Gods timing remains his own. The follow on theme here is that God does not give to us to decipher his timing. That does not mean we sit as passive observers in God's work. The Holy Spirit is meant to empower us to do the part that is our own. To witness of Jesus Christ. This is where God wants us to spend our focus. NASB 1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had given orders by the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of things regarding the kingdom of God. Meditation on Scripture: As we read in scripture we see Gods declaration that it is the word of God. Equally valid is that this word came through the direct experience of people, influenced by the Spirit. The book of Acts is such an example. The same author that wrote the Gospel of Luke also wrote Acts and in fact that is what is referenced here. As we read scripture it can be deeply meaningful to see how God interacted with other human beings like us. Good did not use some alternative form of human being to put out His word. God's Spirit has great power both in times past and also now. Of all the important and powerful things that could be shared there are none so meaningful as to examine the role of Jesus Christ as our Savior, Redeemer, God, and King. That is where Luke starts. Then he continues with the witnesses to the events after the death of Jesus in the book of Acts. We worship a God who has interacted with human beings throughout history and is willing to have a relationship with each and every one of us. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. So God made a wind sweep over the earth, and the waters began to subside. 2 The fountains of the abyss and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the downpour from the sky was held back. 3 Gradually the waters receded from the earth. At the end of one hundred and fifty days, the waters had so diminished NRSV 8 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and all the domestic animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided; 2 the fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens was restrained, 3 and the waters gradually receded from the earth. At the end of one hundred and fifty days the waters had abated; Meditation on Scripture: I am very close to someone who has suffered a severe reduction in their short term memory function. So much so that conversation loops multiple times in a very short time. Things I share with this person do not make it into their memory. As a result it causes me to reevaluate the nature of identity and connection. Our spiritual substance is not reduced to our ability to remember. Eventually all the physical matter that makes up our brains and memory creation mechanisms will fail and eventually turn to dust. Does this mean we cease to be? Do our memories define us? How bound are we to who we used to be? How bound are we to the actions of others in the past? When I was reading around in scripture for instances of remembering I was rewarded with the realization that many of the references to remembering, it is God that is doing the remembering. Remembering His covenant, remembering His children. There are times when he asks us to remember, such as remembering the sabbath day to keep it holy. Unlike us, remembering is something that defines God. It is a characteristic of God to remember his covenants and to honor them. It was God remembering Noah that saved him and his family from the flood. In this scripture we see God remembering Noah, and after a period of trial, to allow Noah's life to move to the next level. In our dark moments we feel that God may not remember us. We don't see God's timing, we don't know God's intentions. We don't fully understand the upper and lower bounds of His covenant. Know this, God remembers you. Even more importantly that God rescuing us for our life circumstances, God remembers his great covenant to us. He remembers the offering of redemption. When things get difficult and you wonder if God remembers you, remember His word. Since our memory is so much more limited, lets commit to rejuvenate our understanding of Him by reviewing the events in scripture and possibly keeping a personal journal of ways God has blessed us that we can review when we feel God does not remember us. Something that becomes clear in scripture is that each time God's people wonders if God remembers them, the far greater challenge they face is their remembering Him. Let us continually turn our attentions to the everlasting love God offers. Turn your memories to Him, turn your past over to Him, even more importantly turn your future over to God. NKJV 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel. Meditation on Scripture: As we learn to school our actions and responses, and as we learn to love, we come to understand our relationship with God better. In the Old Testament we see the way Moses approaches God in fear. Although we shouldn't minimize the grandeur of God, scripture us full of times when God commands people to not fear as they approach. We are offered a mountain of Joy not one of fear. We are surrounded by an innumerable community of heavenly beings. We don't see them and many times don't see the impact but God commands legions of beings full of love. This is the Lingdom of God. Not to fear Gods wrath but to rejoice in Gods power and direction and the miraculous gift he has given with the new covenant through Jesus Christ. How lucky for us that God is both our judge but also our mediator before the effects of Sin. The spilling of Christs blood cleanses us from the effects of the most horrible failings of humanity. Each breath we draw can be ingratitude of our all powerful and loving God. Praise be to God. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Scripture for Meditation NIV 14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done. NKJV 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or [f]profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears. Meditation on Scripture: In each age there are difficulties of living the gospel. In our times there is a great deal of pressure to accept all manner of things in contrast to the Gospel. Equally there is a strong pressure to violently oppose and create enemies with those who don't hold to the ways of the Lord. Here Paul is recommending us to strive for peace with everyone, yet not compromise on the Holiness of the Lord. We do not choose that holiness. We do not adjudicate God's morality. Equally it is important that the Love of Christ become the means whereby we gain as much influence as possible to help others live the ways of God. Not out of scorn or wrath, but out of the charity of God. How grateful we are for the forgiveness God has offered to us and what a special blessing it is to have that peace in our lives. No matter our past, Gods can and does cleanse us of sin. He cleares the conviction we deserve. Having received such a blessing and assisted by such a powerful God how can we possibly have an enemy in anyone who has such forgiveness available to them. We can trust that God will destroy the darkness. In God's holiness we remain protected in Love. Esau, the brother of Jacob, missed out on a profound birthright. The Old testament refers to Jehovah as the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. The saying was not the God of Abraham, Issac, and Esau. Such was Esau's rejection. Yet later Jacob sought peace with Esau and did not attempt to make him a perpetual enemy. The invitation we have is to receive Christ's name upon our heart and then to embody the loving peace of Christ in this world, even as greater moral darkness invades this world and in so doing is how we see God in our lives. . God knows how this story ends and has told us again and again to seek His light and holiness and we will overcome through the merits of Jesus Christ. As you feel Christ's love, pour that love out on others. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Scripture for Meditation Geneva Bible 1599 8 If therefore ye be without correction, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Moreover we have had the fathers of our bodies which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: should we not much rather be in subjection unto the father of spirits, that we might live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure, but he chastened us for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. NIV 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. Meditation: In continuing this theme of discipline I want to pivot a bit. There is a tragedy of which I am intimately aware. This scripture uses a wonderful analogy of God comparing Him to our earthly father. The sad reality is that for many people the analogy do not resonate with their personal experiences. For example I grew up without a father. My Father died when I was 6 years old. I have some vague memories of His discipline but for many years it is difficult to understand Gods fatherly role. Many people have challenging relationships with their fathers. That may place a dark filter on the lens of how those people view God. I think this is a productive thing to think about. If you had an experience like this, I invite you to low god to repair and reform the role of fatherhood. A perfect and loving God claims you as His child. He is your fathe. The perfect father. One full of love and a desire for you to receive of His holiness. He is willing to allow us to experience hardship. He trusts us that we can come to see hardship as discipline and turn our eyes back to God. In these moments, ponder how a perfectly loving father offers you His holiness with a heart full of love. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Scripture for Meditation Hebrews 12 NKJV 4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: "My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives." 7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? NIV 4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son." 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? Meditation: Quote from Proverbs 3:11-12 The central most important message of the gospel of Jesus Christ is the recognition that salvation comes only through the sacrifice and atonement of Jesus Christ. It is through the grace of God that any meaningful conversation about improvement can occur. With that said the gospel of Jesus Christ makes place for spiritual discipline as mentioned here. Through the eternal and never ending love of Christ, and the holy spirit, we have been offered the opportunity to understand a portion of God's will. Admittedly this is a profoundly limited amount of information that our human minds can comprehend, but it is enough to recognize that we at times violate what we should do. I believe that God's desire with these moments of self reflection, where we discover actions we could change, is that it draws us into the loving embrace of the Grace of Christ that allows us to leave those destructive thoughts and behaviors behind. Equallally, in opposition to God's messaging I think the enemy wants us to wallow in hopeless depression, embarrassment and stubbornness about our human faults. In the moments when we truly are connected to the love of God, we can see this loving influence to speak correction into our lives. This is the nature of ideal heavenly discipline. The light of Christ convicts our heart of our need for God and impresses us with the love available through Jesus Christ. One where the spirit of God shows us the ways we could improve, and we are encouraged and motivated to leave everything behind that diverts from God's desires for us. If we maintain this sort of loving feeling we have been successfully disciplined by God. It is in moments when we become careless or have our eyes closed to God's intent for us, or are in denial of our faults, that His discipline becomes uncomfortable. During this time ponder the ways in which God's loving embrace can offer you corrective guidance. What things would help you divert your attention more fully to the life God would have you live. As we remain completely dedicated to the highest Good, namely the name of Jesus and the respective truths of God, we can embrace a spirit of Change that is joyful as it draws us along the path of spiritual maturation God has for us. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. 618 The Author and Finisher of Our Faith , A Guided Christian Meditation on Hebrews 12:1-3 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in your life and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ. Scripture for Meditation Hebrews 12 NIV 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. KJV 12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Meditation: These last few weeks have been challenging for me. They have been demanding and have caused me to feel overwhelmed. We all have those moments where we can tell our own resources feel insufficient or that we haven't made the best decisions. We seek peace and yet the path before us is often not smooth and peaceful. There is a challenge in finding peace when the path before us requires us to run. More specifically to run with patience. What is it that leads us to feel like things are going well? When do we consider that things are going well? When life is easy, or when we overcome through the strength God endows. As this scripture directly shows, we find this strength through Christ. Several years ago I kept trying to get fit. Many times I had tried to run but I would go out on fast after not running for a long time and I would get hurt. One time I chose to run slower. I would run multiple times a week at such a low speed it felt that it wouldn't be enough to get fit but because of that, I ran consistently and frequently. During these runs my focus was not on my own abilities but in the act of running peacefully, perhaps even patiently. Within a few months I had dramatically increased my speed. Almost 5 full minutes on a mile and a half. When we run the race of life as though the outcome is based on our personal speed we avoid the very source of strength that makes a patient run possible. Jesus is the author or our peace but also the finisher. He is our pioneer. Allow him to create the story of your life and harness God's power to patiently follow the course he has marked out for us. Use this meditation as a moment to focus on God's role in the success of your race. NRSVUE 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you an opportunity to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast in outward appearance and not in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died.15 And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for the one who for their sake died and was raised. Meditation: Recently I was listening to a therapist discuss an idea where he was asking people to consider different parts of themselves and how those work against each other. He then talked about the value of learning to focus on the center "empty" self. I think this idea misses something valuable but harnesses spiritual ideas that are felt. As we sit in silence before the Lord we learn what Paul teaches here. We live for Christ. The thing we seek in stillness and silence is not only some empty version of ourselves. I disagree with that characterization. What we seek is the nature of the God of Peace which is inside us. When you sit in silence, The value of the Spirit of God is not a psychological idea, yet it is the thing that most reliably produces emotional healing. The love of God urges us on. When we experience the love of God we are unity with the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the salvation God offers through that and as well the love and connection that we gain by uniting with that love of God which God put inside us. Pause now to reflect and experience the love of God within us Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. NRSVCE 6 So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For all of us must appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. Meditation: We walk by faith not by sight. Our true identity is infused from God and that is inherently outside of the world of what we see. Not just our identity but also morality. That is not seen. The source of identification of what is good and evil is not seen. Equally our perspective on what our life goals are is similarly unseen. At a time when we may reevaluate life goals what do we choose as those most important goals. This provides an interesting tension. On the one hand an over-fixation on our own goodness can cause us to overlook the grace of God. Another way to say that focusing only on our actions is focusing only on those things that are seen and not by faith Also if we are brutally honest with ourselves we recognize a whole multitude of sins. There are nearly endless ways in which human nature is in opposition to the unseen positive. We tend to focus on only what is immediately in front of us and many times that can lead us away from the things of God when the things in front of us are rooted in carnal nature. Moments of devotion can help us center our intention to look to the things of faith. With that said we can have absolute confidence in the promise and goodness of God. As we walk by faith we walk with the knowledge of a God's definition of who we are and our eternal spiritual nature as Children of God redeemed by Jesus. So as we set our goals and mindset, or perhaps evaluate the progress of our goals, let us place more focus on those unseen things of God rooted in faith. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation: One continual balancing act is comparing the value of improving the lives of those around us and also learning to embrace contentment. If we take radical contentment then we miss the opportunity to drive positive change. If we are obsessed with change then we are robbed of peace. Paul here is looking at that difference. The solution he presents is to focus on the thing that God does. God provides the bridge between improvement and peace. If the tent we live in, our physical body, our surroundings, money, or any other physical things around us, if any of those things are our focus, we miss the peace offered by God. We can rely on the eternal house that God provides. One element of that is an eternal reward in heaven. That is directly connected to the transformation of spirit that Jesus offers us. Our home is heaven. We are visiting Earth. We temporarily loaned these physical bodies, our true eternal home is with God. It is in heaven, specifically because of the role of Jesus as our Savior. We are the prodigal son. As we embrace a heavenly perspective we can be inspired to make this earth more like that heavenly home. The improvement we seek should not be out of an obsession for this world but through a spreading of the spiritual completion of the spirit. In this way we can love, and share the Love we receive from God. God transforms us and we bring that transformation to the world and as such are the light of the world. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. NASB 46 And Mary said: "My soul exalts the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. 48 For He has had regard for the humble state of His bond-servant; For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed. 49 For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. 50 And His mercy is to generation after generation Toward those who fear Him. Meditation: This scripture is the response given by Mary before the birth of Jesus. Mary demonstrates her humility. She openly recognizes what God has done for her. This is even before Jesus' birth. She recognizes what God had done for her up to that point. She recognizes her role as servant of the Lord. In this way Mary reflects the ideal mindset of the church, recognizing the need that we all have before the Lord. I often think of how vulnerable the situation of Mary was. She grew up within the context of the Law of Moses. The same laws that led the Jewish leaders to bring a woman to Jesus to be stoned a few decades later, would have equally applied to Mary of becoming pregnant while not in a consummate lawful marriage. She had nothing of earthly power. She had no sway within the laws of politics or the law of God. Other than the extra natural revelations she had received, she did not enjoy an untarnished reputation or even physical safety. God does not always put us in easy situations from which we can flex our muscles. He often confronts us with the full weakness of our position in life. When we face these weaknesses we finally begin to realize the Power of an almighty God who chose to love us despite our failings. We recognize that through all generations God has recognized humility, love, and respect as the central themes of what He wants for us because He knows that is through His mercy saves. God has done such great things for us. He has created an earth and set conditions for life to be possible. That alone is an amazing gift. And yet God does not stop here. God gave us life and then nourished us. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail." Meditation: God takes an eternal view of things. He takes an eternal view of life and afterlife. In the economy of God the baby born at Christmas is the same being who would go to Golgotha and rise again from the Tomb. The same being who was born of a mother is the same to raise multille people from death. Our human minds struggle to understand. I remember once year for Christmas I wanted a certain present and J got something else. I remember being sad about it. All these years later I recognize that the gift never mattered and I am embarrassed that I had such a limited view of gifts. What was far more valuable to me right now is that I was loved and cared for and instilled with values that continue to bless me. Our human minds can easily be confined and limited. We can feel that our current moment is the only real one, yet God knows us as we are now and for the rest of our existence. God knows what is eternally beneficial for us and knows how to give it to us. But we must learn to truly trust in Him as our God. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit.
