NRSV17 Then Daniel went to his home and informed his companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, of the matter 18 and told them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven. NIV 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven Meditation: The King had a dream. He did not know how to understand it but it was so troubling to him that he sought an answer earnestly. The wise men as well told the King that no earthly person could tell him a dream that he had and the king said he would kill them all. Daniel as well told the king it could not be done but he asked time for him to Seek out the mercy of God. When things mattered the most the trusted in God. They knew what would happen. They understood that the answer could only come through God. With Daniel as with us God knows us and our needs. Daniel sought the mercy of God and as a result he received an answer. We need turn to God for our answers. The thing you most need to understand, bring it to the Lord and then be patient for how he chooses to answer. Scripture for Meditation ESV 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. NASB 9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. Meditation: Paul has an interesting character. He is often very harsh on himself for his past sins especially how he persecuted the church. He recognizes his own need for God. He accepts that it is through the mercy of Jesus Christ that he is forgiven. He sees that grace as empowering. Something that makes him able to do difficult things. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures: NIV Now I want you to understand, brothers and sisters, the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you intern received, in which you also stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you – unless you have come to believe in vain. Meditation: Happy Easter. We celebrate today the victory of Christ over the grave. What a victory it is. It is good news! It is the best news! We can trust in this testimony of Paul. He saw the risen Lord. Stand strong in that faith. Remain in that faith. There is so much power in this testimony. What is equally important is that it was foretold. Many prophecies were fulfilled in His birth, life, ministry, death, and eventual triumphant resurrection. Hold fast to our faith in Christ. That faith will not be and has not been in vain. Faith in God is never wasted. Our faith is not vain hold fast to it. Spend a moment now and rejoice in the faith that you have. Jesus Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. I wish you were either cold or hot. 16 So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, 'I am rich and affluent and have no need of anything,' and yet do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you may see. 19 Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. ESV 15 "'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. 19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Meditation: Much of the discussion and focus of morality is on performance and adherence to moral standards. This presents a specific challenge. If we ignore the law then we don't live morally. If we ignore grace we have an unrealistic standard of guilt. We can attempt to find some arbitrary standardard in between that we can attempt to be happy with. We can seek to not be warm or hot. The beauty of the Gospel that God has given. His good news is that this arbitrary balance of law and mercy is not the best way to resolve this moral quandary. Our goal shouldn't be to be pretty good. Our goal should be to be like Jesus. Yet to do that we must change. This change need not be through some Herculean force of human will but a faithful following and trust in the source of perfect grace, Jesus Christ. We shouldn't spend time becoming complacent with good in order to ease our consciences. We don't need to reset Gods moral standards in order to love ourselves or our neighbor. We should move toward Christ and let His atoning blood ease our conscience. End of Revelation SeriesAs we are seeing, much of the guidance to the seven Churches in Revelation has to do with repentance. This is an incredibly valuable lesson throughout all time. In modern times there remains a challenge for each of us when we know what is the right thing to do. Do we do what we think is right? There are many things which we know to be right but struggle to do them. Eating healthy and working out, building our relationships, and religious activity among the examples. This is a constant human struggle. Sometimes we do what we know to be right and sometimes we don't. This is why it is incredibly valuable for us to reevaluate our actions from time to time and embrace the mercy of the Lord. Instead of crumbling under the pressure of being perfect, embrace the fact that God is willing to forgive us and help us realign our actions at all times. An incredibly valuable lesson that God can teach us is regarding personal discipline, not as a method of earning God's love or ignoring God's grace but as a matter of living in God's love. As we learn to approach personal discipline from a lens of God's grace it helps us not accept a lukewarm mindset. Inevitably we fail in life but we don't need to accept our identity of failures because Christ takes away our shame. Christ corrects whom He loves. Sit now in the mindset of living hot in God's spirit. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation: Imagine that you are at a coronation. You are abou to the crowned a queen or king. At the moment you are to be given the crown someone from the audience casually walks up and tries to take it away. You would stop that. The Lord values endurance. Here The resurrected Lord himself says so. We need to remain dedicated to these things. The challenge is that the longer we remain close with the Lord, the we can be tempted to grow complacent. As we hold fast to His word, God will protect us from the trials and temptations of life. He will take our limited Strenth and make it sufficient to overcome all. He has left the door open for us. Jesus offers the crown of his Kingdom to those who accept Him as their Lord and remain faithful to Him. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come upon you. 4 Yet you have a few names in Sardis, people who have not defiled their clothes. They will walk with me in white clothing, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious in this way will be clothed in white clothing. I certainly will not erase his name from the Book of Life, and I will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. Meditation: Strengthen the things that remain. Many people throughout their lives have struggles in faith. They may battle doubts or fears. They may struggle with unanswered questions or a concept of God that makes it difficult to connect with God. This can lead to actions that are incongruent of what we would otherwise which further erodes our feeling of closeness to the Lord. Perhaps you have had such a struggle or know someone who is currently going through that. It reminds me of the man who asked Jesus to heal his daughter. Jesus asked him if he had faith and the man said Lord I believe bless thou my unbelief. Each of us has our human weakness. Sometimes we struggle with our mental health which can make these feelings of joy challenging. By treating that, in addition to our spiritual struggles we can find joy again. There is no greater joy than to experience the loving spirit of God. This is the root of joy, happiness, and fulfillment. When that joy is missing from life it can lead to feelings of emptiness and purposelessness. Even in our moment of struggle, God does not cast us off. He wants to rekindle that relationship with us. He wants to build us back up. He wants us to feel that spirit again. Your clothes can be washed clean again. His grace is sufficient for you. You are not so uniquely lost that He cannot recover you. Spend time with God and direct your actions to what you know to be right and that raging fire of faith can return if you have had it before, or if you haven't had it, it can grow to become that. Find a group of people who have this as their goal and build each other up. Take him up on that offer and strengthen what remains of your faith. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Scripture for Meditation Revelation 2 ESV 19 "'I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, Wycliffe Bible 19 I know thy works, and faith, and charity, and thy service [and service], and thy patience, and thy last works more than the former. 20 But I have against thee a few things; for thou sufferest the woman Jezebel, which saith that she is a prophetess [the which saith herself for to be a prophetess], to teach and deceive my servants, to do lechery, and to eat of things offered to idols. 21 And I gave to her time, that she should do penance [And I gave to her time, for to do penance], and she would not do penance of her fornication. 22 And lo! [Lo!] I send her into a bed, and they that do lechery with her shall be in most tribulation, but they do penance of her works [but they do penance of their works]. Meditation: Scripture makes specific reference to sexual purity many times. Our modern culture seems intent on upsetting any form of purity as an antiquated idea, especially sexual purity As though only those who are from the backward past would care about maintaining purity. Our bodies were fearfully and wonderfully made. They have within them the ability to participate with God in the creation of life. This is an amazing and sacred thing. It seems that the world is intent on taking this sacred power and turning it into a toy exclusively for personal gratification. This path has many negative consequences, as any time we made vulgar the things which are sacred. We should not pretend that these sacred powers are somehow evil, just because their misuse is discouraged in scripture. I think another trap of the enemy is to take natural desires for physical pleasure and make us feel shameful for it. I don't see in scripture God condemning involuntary desires or urges. We should not conceded that all this desire is a thing of the devil. God encourages us to manage these natural desires with His help. Clearly the actions of using our sexuality outside of the natural bonds of marriage are against what the scriptures say. Jesus additionally said not to let our thoughts linger on violations of that purity and to not commit adultery in thought. We should not allow pleasure to become an idol that we worship any more than we should give Satan dominion over how we think about pleasure. As we discipline our minds we can be more sensitive to the sacred things of God. God desires us to live happy and fulfilled lives as we follow God's word. In all of this God loves you and will reconcile us to Him. Turn to God in your life. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Scripture for Meditation Revelation 2 KJV 13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. 14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate. 16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. NASB 13 'I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is; and you hold firmly to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality. 15 So you too, have some who in the same way hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will wage war against them with the sword of My mouth. Meditation: For much of scripture there are people who seem to try to adhere to the true worship of God and also go along with the worship of other things and false Gods. This happens all throughout the Old Testament and even here in the New Testament. This was so important that it made the list of the Ten Commandments in fact taken apart this represents the first and second commandment. We often look at these people as though they are silly and how backwards they are yet in our time this is just as common. There are plenty of things, groups that can represent a kind of idol in our lives. Do we go along with the idols of our time. Do we bow to them even if it is just to get along? It might not be in obvious ways. It could be certain sins or moral stances that are at odds with God. It might be recreational activity that is positive but we allow to take preeminence in our life. Pause for a moment and consider if there are things you would like to reevaluate in light of this. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. NABRE 9 "I know your tribulation and poverty, but you are rich. I know the slander of those who claim to be Jews and are not, but rather are members of the assembly of Satan. 10 Do not be afraid of anything that you are going to suffer. Indeed, the devil will throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will face an ordeal for ten days. Remain faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 "'"Whoever has ears ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The victor shall not be harmed by the second death."' Meditation: The message he gives to Smyrna is a difficult one. He tells them to get ready for hardship. Remember that this vision is of Jesus himself clothed in white holding the angels of the seven churches in his hand. He tells them they will suffer hardship but don't fear it. This is hard to do. He foretells prison and suffering even unto death. The struggle is that we feel that if God is all powerful then he will ensure that the good are saved from prison. We sometimes even say that we understand that sometimes bad things happen to the righteous but when bad things happen to us we still struggle with it. This is a natural human response. The all powerful risen Lord did not say he would cause these bad things to happen. He did however say he would give them a crown of life if they were faithful unto death. The struggle is that none of us fully understand how wonderful the crown of life is. We have no context for it. I remember embarrassing moments for me when I was a kid and I chuckle at them. Who is to say how we will see the difficulties of this life in one million years from now as we sit surrounded by love crowned with life Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. KJV 2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. Meditation: Remember your first love. What a poetic and beautiful way for God to call these people to repentance. He points out things they are attempting to do good for him but then he reminds them to repent. In our modern society people have little patience for repentance. It is not favorable in or out of the church. People often wish to be forgiven of their wrong-doing but true repentance is often overlooked. As God's people we should embrace opportunities to repent. There are times when, even as faithful followers of Christ, that we will fail to live up to the commands of Jesus to go and sin no more. When we learn to embrace repentance as an act of love it changes the experience. We can see repentance as joyfully giving up things that are separate from God and embracing His love and peace, which He offers. Here Jesus demands the people repent and we can take that literally that he wants them to return to their first Love. When we change the frame of repentance to see how Christ offers it, it become sweet and joyous. Because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ repentance does not need to be an emotional flogging where we are whipped bloody for our wrongdoing. It can be a time when we reconcile our faults with God's desires and return to His love. Ponder perhaps in what areas you can return to that Love and repent. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. 19 "Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels[e] of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. ESV 10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them." 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for "The righteous shall live by faith." 12 But the law is not of faith, rather "The one who does them shall live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree"— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. Meditation: they even feel cursed to a degree or another because of their hardships. I think this represents a large misunderstanding of what it is that curses us. People in these situations look at the conditions of their life an seek to justify why life feels harder than they should. They then backwards engineer that God must be smiting them because he doesn't like them or is mad at them. They then feel that this is the punishment. The fuller story is that each of us are in need in the most profound sense from the true curse with is our own sin. Not just some large sin that others may not know about or understand. But that thousands of sins, the thousands of times when our will has deviated from God's. We break His law more than we even realize. So when people feel cursed by God in some sense there is a justification for that. The challenge is that this is not the full story. The truth is in some ways we have all cursed ourselves through the choices we have made and would continue making. Our sins would keep us from God. This curse is not due to some capricious nature of God, but it is more a reflection of our own inconsistency and fault. The glorious good news is that this curse is overcome in Christ. So are we cursed when things go wrong? No, because God offers redemption from the curse that would have otherwise been ours. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Do we miss the purposes God has in the things that happen in our life? This can happen when we don't understand the purposes of God. For example if we receive Jesus but then act as though we don't know him and dont trust Jesus for our salvation. Are we perfected by our efforts to try to do good? Does the law justify us or sanctify us? It is interaction with God's spirit that guides us back to Him. Christ was crucified not because that was an interesting side story in us saving ourselves but because it is the necessary step to allow us to overcome sin. He offers that to us. If you heart is wallowed up in your own weakness and you think you are not good enough for God, you miss the offer that he gave you. Of course you are not good enough for God. None of us are. And yet for His profound love for you and me, he made a way for us to overcome. You do not need to choose between denial of your sins or wallowing eternally in sin. You can choose the path Christ offers. See your sin, then see your need for help to get out of the mess, then bring it to the foot of Jesus and profess your need for repentance and then live in the confidence that this is enough and live in the the spirit of Love that God offers. Psalms 147 NABRE 15 He sends his command to earth; his word runs swiftly! 16 Thus he makes the snow like wool, and spreads the frost like ash; 17 He disperses hail like crumbs. Who can withstand his cold? 18 Yet when again he issues his command, it melts them; he raises his winds and the waters flow. 19 He proclaims his word to Jacob, his statutes and laws to Israel. 20 He has not done this for any other nation; of such laws they know nothing. Hallelujah!
Ep 502502 Christmas is the Vulnerability of God, A Guided Christian Meditation on Psalms 147:15-20 Recenter with Christ
Bible verses for Meditation: Psalms 147 NABRE 15 He sends his command to earth; his word runs swiftly! Hallelujah! NIV He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. 16 He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. 17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast? 18 He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow. 19 He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel. 20 He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the Lord. Meditation: God is the ultimate commander. He is the ideal leader, president, king or any other title. His word can cross the universe faster than light. He is not bound by our understanding of the laws of nature. He freezes the earth or melts it. He commands the elements and they obey. With all the power he controls he presents His word to us. He tells us what he wants from us. He desires our faithfulness, He desires our hope in His grace. Imagine God as the most perfect loving ruler who has invited us to his table to eat. He can control mountains and storms and he patiently asks us to follow. His restraint in dealing with us disobedient humans is a testament to His love and goodness. He invites you to follow Him. Ponder in this moment how willing are you to follow God's commands? Are you willing to accept Him as your sovereign ruler? He is our Savior and our Lord. He loves and he demands. He asks and he answers. God's love for your is profound. Not a begrudging love, but an overflowing one. One not of desperation but of power and grace. He loves us. He loves you. Praise be to God for the gift of his unmatched love. Happy 500th Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Meditation: Nature is inspiring with its beauty. I often look at sunsets or mountains and rejoice in the beauty of the earth God created. Scientific studies show that as humans spend time in nature it is healing for them both biochemically and emotionally. God's creation is amazing and glorious. Ive had the chance to ride horses a few times and spend time looking at them face to face. They are glorious creatures with intuitive hearts. Yet as we picture the most beautiful scene in nature, this is not why God created the earth. He did not create the earth to impress himself. God doesn't care about horsepower. He is not impressed by the things we can build and our strength. As we see and ant moving a spec of food, that is not something that rivals our power and yet the chasm between us and God is far wider than that. What does God delight in? He takes pleasure in them that hope in his mercy and place their faith in Him. Those who have appropriate respect and adoration for God. He created us with the understanding that we would have the weaknesses that we do, yet he did anyway. He knew there would be hope for us if we came to Him. He delights in helping us. He rejoices in seeing us draw near to Him. He created us to learn how to love Him and to learn to trust Him. The next time you see a beautiful scene from nature perhaps give a thankful prayer to God giving gratitude for it and recommit to show him what he finds pleasing, a soul who fears and place your hope in His mercy. What do you say about yourself?" 23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." Meditation: John is an amazing example to me. Not once does he take glory for himself. Not once does he claim to be more important than he is. He recognizes the true power that is though Jesus Christ. He realizes what his role is in the great eternal struggle and he rejoices in it. He rejoices in the Lord. The need for his humility does not appear to cause him to hate himself but to value God highly. It is not necessary for him to diminish the importance of his work or the things God is able to do through him. We can take an example from John. He rejected the pure light of God, the light of Christ. He shows us how we can take that light and place it on a candlestick. We can both rejoice in God, give gratitude for Him and what He does in our lives, and recognize the good work he does for us and through us. We can do this without taking pride into our hearts or making things about us. The clarion call of the world is that we should seek what is good for us, but the irony is that as we learn to work with God's Spirit we have less of a need to find our value outside of God's love. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. NASB 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John *testified about Him and called out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who is coming after me has proved to be my superior, because He existed before me.'" 16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time; God the only Son, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him. Meditation: The Word became flesh. The creator, the creative force of the universe, had been with them in human form. John was at the mount of transfiguration and saw the Glory of Christ, in whatever form He was able to show that glory to humans. There were so many prophecies about His coming. There ware so many miracles shown. Sit now in the assurance that the God has been moving things from the beginning. From everlasting to everlasting. Numbers break down when compared to the immensity of what it means for the Word, which was before the universe was, to have walked on earth. He who was in the bosom of the father. Yet this was not a mere interesting fact or a vacation on Jesus's part. It was to do something He very much intended to do since the beginning. He gave his grace to us. He gave the law through Moses, knowing that it would be superseded by the fullness of His Gospel. Ponder for a moment what it means to receive of His fulness. Have you received of His fullness? During this meditation ponder and ask the Lord to know what you can do to recognize or receive that fullness. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit.
