Christ Our Hope Community Church

We are beginning our sermon series through Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. The city of Corinth was a Roman colony in Greece. It was a lively, global city, a center for thought and creativity, comprised of diverse peoples and cultures. Most of the early Christian converts in Corinth were non-Jews, former pagans and polytheists. Thus, Paul’s message to the Church in Corinth was a radical departure from the status quo: Through the counterintuitive victory of the crucified Christ, the world is being swept up into the grand, redemptive movement of the one true God of Israel. And this changes everything!

For Holy Week this year, we are studying select passages from the Gospel of Mark. As Mark’s Gospel opens, the people of God are being ruled and occupied by the Romans. Israel is under house arrest, and God is silent. Where was His promised kingdom? In the person and work of Jesus Christ, we see God’s kingdom come. However, Jesus does not come as expected. He does not come with chariots and trumpets; He comes humbly and quietly. He does not defeat the Romans in battle; He is crucified to defeat an Enemy even more sinister. But make no mistake; He is the King.
