The only bright spots were Petrovic again and Nkunku’s goal.We are so far off it. The recruitment, ownership and players are simply not good enough but Poch is also culpable, but if we get rid of Poch who would we get now? So far has the club fallen, under Clearlake, from the standards at Chelsea we are accustomed to, most probably average English young managers or unknown European managers but no one of the elite level we are used to. In part two we look ahead to Sunday's match against Wolves kicking off with JK's summary of the presser and Chidge's team selection. Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Marco Worrall, Chelsea author and Gate 17 publisher to look back at Chelsea's 1-0 win over Fulham.In part one we discuss Chelsea's laborious first half AGAIN with too many touches and often poor ones; too slow in the build up and of course no idea how to hit the back of the net. Until referee Anthony Taylor shocked the entire world by awarding Chelsea a penalty at the end of the half, which Cole Palmer put away for his 9th goal of the season.The second half was much better with more energy, pressing and more direct with both Sterling and Gallagher hitting the post. But Chelsea couldn’t kill the game off and the last 10 minutes was a shambles, aided and abetted by Taylor and Keystone Kops defending, with stupid free kicks given away, running into defenders and wrong passes. At least we cheered the hoofs up field as Chelsea eventually saw the game out, but it was stressful!In part two we praise Petrovic who was quietly impressive again. Should he be Chelsea's No.1 keeper? Enzo was more dynamic and Caicedo did good terrier like work. Colwill had a decent game albeit not suited to the left back role. Just as well Chilwell came on with 23 minutes to go, but replacing Sterling as winger not Colwill at left back! A win is a win albeit a marginally ugly one but are there genuinely signs of encouragement and improvement? It was all so predictable - concede first and can’t break a side down. Defensive errors are still rife. Injuries yes, inexperience yes but no excuse for a lack of desire, football intelligence and execution. It’s only half-time – 1-0 down and should be retrievable but…is Pochettino’s position really in jeopardy? In part two we welcome back Dom Betts from The Fulhamish Podcast to 'The Opposition View'. We discuss Fulham’s season so far , has it been a bit up and down? How have they coped without Mitrovic? How is Willian doing? Were Chelsea complacent, taking Preston lightly? Preston did a good job with 3 at the back and 5 out of possession and kept Chelsea going side to side and at arm’s length. And why do players such as Moises, Sterling and Enzo not impose themselves on the game or take it by the scruff of the neck?In part two Poch gave a much needed and effective half-time hairdryer to the players. As a consequence, Chelsea pushed Preston back, Palmer played higher up the pitch and they were more aggressive with more intent. Broja scored a proper strikers goal and his confidence appeared to come back, as did Chelsea's while Preston's dissipated. Goals from Silva, Sterling and Emzo put the game to bed. All in all it was a poor first half and an excellent second. Chelsea dispatched a determined championship side without too much fuss; kept the winning streak going; gave minutes to Gilchrist, Washington and Golding and are into the next round. Job done.In part three we preview the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday away to Middlesbrough for the first leg. We start with JK's summary of Poch's presser and Chidge reveals his team selection.Boro look like similar opposition to Preston and have had an easy ride to the semi final and have poor recent form, but there is history in this fixture and they will be bang up for it. We recall the play off matches from 1988, the FA and League Cup victories of 1997 and 1998, Rafa Benitez meltdown after the 2013 FA Cup win and Bruce Buck's comments winding up Boro before the cup match of 2022.We discuss that it would be nice to hump Boro and make the second leg a formality but…suspect it might be tighter than it should be. Will there be big changes or not? As founders of the football league, Preston North End have a rich history having won the double in the inaugral season and the title again the next season. They've been starved of success since the late 1960's but with former players including Sir Tom Finney can boast a fine pedigree. They’ll be bringing 6,000 and will be up for it. Manager Ryan Lowe wants them to enjoy the day out, but they'll no doubt be looking for a cup upset. But they've been in middling form in the Championship, have been poor away and Cup form in recent years has not been impressive. With no european football this season, Cup competitions are increasingly important for Chelsea and Pochettino and Chelsea's FA Cup record over the last 30 years is unmatched, although 4 Cup final defeats in the last 5 might tell a different story. For once goals were not the problem - Palmer is different class and a great finish from Madueke with a great build up too. Jackson divided opinion but got kicked a lot, played some good balls through tracked back and defended well too. He looks better out wide than up front. Broja on the other hand…In part two we look at the second half where Chelsea went all Dracula, with Chong and Doughty outstanding as Luton could have scored 4 or 5. Silva was the reason they didn’t. He’s still a cut above but does he need better than Disasi or Badiashile next to him. Perhaps Colwill when Chilwell returns?Petrovic was superb again making some good saves and kicking long; a great tactical move to negate Luton which worked until Luton went wide. But did Poch get it wrong with his subs and game management? Is there a hint of Spursyness about how we let teams back in?However, we won which is what it’s about and was much needed. Chelsea are not far off European places, the season is not over yet with injured players to return and other teams have poor form and injuries (Utd and Newcastle). Will Chelsea improve and gel more in 2024?In part three we say thank fuck 2023 is over, recall the best and worst moments and ask how bad was it? Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Mark Meehan to look back on a remarkable match against Man City on Sunday.In part one we discuss Chelsea's electric start almost scuppered by Antony Taylor's poor decision for the penalty and great comeback to lead 2:1 before the sucker punch either side of half-time. But Chelsea stuck at it, going toe to toe with City and goal for goal, before Ice Cold Palmer equalised with minutes remaining. Palmer, Sterling, Cucurella, Gallagher and James were outstanding and Sanchez made some great saves. Poch got his subs spot on, with Broja getting the foul that led to the last minute penalty.In part two we reflect on a brilliant week for Chelsea, arguably the best it's been since winning the FIFA Club World Cup in February 2022. It seems we've turned a corner and the team has evolved, showing bravery, confidence, resilience and playing front foot attacking football and breaking free of the turgid tippy tappy sideways borefest of recent years. A real bond seems to be growing between players and manager and indeed the crowd who were the loudest we've heard for years and from all four stands.
