Years in the planning, CheapShow is finally leaving the UK and heading across the Atlantic ocean to explore the city of angels itself, Los Angeles! In a very special episode, Paul and Eli explores the many nooks and crannies of LA in an adventure that takes them over an extremely large, and particularly varied city. Along the way, they'll take a walk along Santa Monica pier, explore 3rd Street Promenade for a thrift store, hunt for the Winkie billboard location, try to escape Hollywood and a few other odd surprises too. There's just one week before we reveal our Los Angeles adventures to the podcast world, so before then, let's dive into some more good, old-fashion Cheapshow goodness! Time is tight this week because Paul has no intention of spending hours editing the podcast when there is a trip to Los Angeles to plan! Just when you weren’t expecting it… BAM… More Winkie news! It’s been a few years since our epic documentary “Ep 181: Winkie: The Untold Story” and we were recently informed of not one, but TWO developments to what we already know! Thanks to the incredible work of Ivenne, and the translations skills of Markus Lindstrom, we have something a little special this week. There’s a recently discovered video on YouTube (see the video on the accompanying webpage for this episode) that contains footage from a French TV series, recorded in 1985, that shows the infamous Winkie billboard competition in action. In a happy happenstance, this week’s episode falls on National Noodle Day, and to celebrate Eli and Paul have managed to get their hands on something a little bit special. If there is one thing we love on CheapShow, it’s the Charity Shop Showcase. It’s the part of the show where we can spend a little more cash and show off something weird or wonderful. This week Eli has found something Pirates of the Caribbean shaped, and Paul has a Kenny Everett annual from 1981. Which will join the “showcase” and which will end up in “no place”? There is also a rather curious challenge ahead for the Cheap Chaps. They’ve been sent a range of Dr Peppers, each with an unusual flavour twist. Now that the dust has settled on the apocalyptic 350th episode, Paul and Eli can now concentrate on delivering great podcast entertainment. It’s time to reboot! They’re going to be more mainstream, more approachable, and far less crass from now on! At least that’s the plan. As ever with CheapShow, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Special Guest: Gareth Reynolds Things are looking up for Paul and Eli this week. The big wedding is just around the corner and Thrift Pod has been defeated! Things are tough at CheapShow HQ, their rival podcast clone, Thrift Pod, is casting a long shadow over Paul & Eli and they wonder if their beloved economy comedy podcast can survive much longer! Whilst Paul and Eli have carried on regardless, there have been nefarious plans developing in the background and its not good news for the “much loved” economy comedy podcast. It’s not been much of a Summer this year, so while the sun is shining and while there are plenty of cheap eats to sample, why not go on a picnic? Some weeks on CheapShow, things get a little weirder than usual. This is one of those episodes. This week, Paul and Eli enter into the world of “Miss World” competitions. They’ve been given a board game, from the 1970s, that allows young girls a taste of a glamourous pageantry lifestyle. As they learn more about the world-famous beauty contest, the cheap chaps uncover some quite surprising facts. There are plenty of peculiar tunes to soak up this week on CheapShow. The segment may be called Silverman’s Platter, but on this edition of the podcast, Paul’s brought along a few interesting records to listen to. A song based on popular TV show “Minder” and styled after Chas N Dave brings Paul and Eli’s attention to the work of The Firm, a music group that churned out one of the 1980s biggest novelty pop hits. Apparently, they had a whole album, so the cheap chaps take a quick tour of their output. There is also a strange album to listen to that was designed to help raise fund for children’s charity NSPCC in 1984. It’s packed with some obvious and not so obvious celebrities from the period, but we focus on Dennis Waterman’s rock n roll Lollipop song and Felicity Kendall’s moog flavoured ditty about fairies! It’s also time to return to the Country Urban Noodle Test Lab International Cuisine Kitchen with a few instant noodles that are new to Eli’s palate. Some week’s Paul and Eli can afford to take it easy. After the exertions of last week’s epic Golden Quest, it’s probably for the best that they let someone else do the hard work of building an episode. What’s wrong with putting a little happiness into the world? In Episode 310, all those months ago, Paul and Eli attempted to complete the whole of the Celandine Walk in 6 hours. They absolutely failed and had to abandon the walk because Eli had somewhere better to be, apparently! However, this failure got under their skin, and they decided that they both need closure. This week, the Cheap Chaps decide to finish off what they started and endeavour to complete that walk, taking them from Swakeleys Park to the Grand Union Canal in Cowley. That means there is a good five miles of walking ahead of them! It’s an emotional rollercoaster this week on CheapShow with bitter rants, over-excited expostulations, sober moments of clarity and confusing arguments! The League of Snacks (and Crisps) is dead! Long Live “Snax Starz”, the exciting new replacement segment for 2023! It was meant to be a simpler premise, but as ever on CheapShow, things get complicated, and all of a sudden there are snack palaces, anthropomorphised crisps and a pool house. This week’s inductee is the much-requested Doritos Burger King Flame Grilled Whopper flavour. As you can imagine, it goes about as well as expected. Get your taste buds ready, because Paul and Eli are going to be noshing on a range of tongue-tingling yet sometimes stomach-churning cheap eats! If there is one thing we love on CheapShow, it’s snacks… and crisps! This week, we have more crisps than we know what to do with, when a tub of “Spudos” is delivered to the PO Box! What is “Spudos”? Well, it’s a big plastic tub filled with plain crisps and comes with an assortment of flavours to sprinkle on. It’s basically an elaborate “Salt N’ Shake”! YOU send your PO boxes to us, and WE (eventually) get around to opening them! This week, Paul and Eli dive into a delivery from Canada which is packed with items that will both tickle and torture their taste buds. From sumptuous snacks to flaming hot Mac n’ Cheese, there are cheap eats aplenty ahead. There maybe a bit too much to gorge on. Luckily, Paul has pulled out another parlour game called “You Be The Judge” that gives them the chance to flex their legal skills. As you can imagine, it doesn’t go all that well. This would usually be more than enough for an episode, but there’s a lot more to enjoy! Paul’s genitals are turning into a wild range of full blown classic Universal Monsters whilst Eli dedicates most of the episode to his “bad boy, maverick broadcaster” image by trying to make his new filthy innuendo stick! Every now and then it’s good to change things up and break free from the old routine, and Paul is excited to do that this week, because he has a brand-new segment to show off. He’s called it the “Charity Shop Showcase” and allows them the chance to talk about charity shop items that may not fit into the show’s usual fun and games. Eli admits it’s a strong new segment, but the merriment won’t last long. There’s also some brand-new sodas to try out and this week it’s an international affair with drinks from Denmark, China and Russia. Which one will be top of the pops? Finally, it’s time to tackle a bugbear of Paul’s (one of MANY this episode) as CheapShow takes on the “Bread” board game. It’s the start of another year. As 2023 rolls in, Paul just isn’t in the mood to go back to making podcasts. As a result, Eli is going to have to do something a little different this week to get Paul in the right frame of mind. What Eli has planned is to have Paul, in a twist to the usual format, take the blind taste test challenge in a round of Off Brand/Brand Off… Or is it Brand Off/Off Brand? Ash Frith brought a few “knock off” gummies to the Xmas party, but now the cheap chaps have the chance to test them against the real thing. Will Paul be able to guess the Percy Pigs from the Leo Lions and the Twinnies from the Squashies? It’s that time of year again! It’s the 4th Annual Office Christmas Party and Paul has made a BIG effort to make sure it’s the BEST office party to date. Paul wants it very “blokey” and so he has invited Ash Frith and Mr Biffo along to join him and Eli for a night of drinking, swearing, rude games and maybe even a sexy Santa stripper! Unfortunately, Mr Biffo has brought Sanja along and so things start going wrong very quickly. Eli is violently in need of a drink, Biffo can’t wait to ruin Paul’s fun, Ash can’t drink and begins to suffer greatly as a result and Sanja is trying to get TOO into the “macho” atmosphere. They consume cheap Xmas themed snacks, a very low budget Christmas feast, way, WAY too much booze and they’re locked in a remote log cabin on a very snowy day. As the year trundles to an end, there is a little bit of business Paul and Eli need to clear up before next week’s depressingly annual office Christmas party. Unfortunately for CheapShow, the newly established Podcast Authority Bureau are demanding answers and it’s up to the Cheap Chaps to take a mini deep dive into their own history to fill in a few gaps in the P.A.B’s database. It’s common knowledge that Paul and Eli are unorganized cretins, so how are they going to come up with the answers when they can’t remember what p’twing happened when and what was an off-brand item, and which one was on-brand? Luckily, they receive an email from someone who had a lot of time on their hands. With a little help, Paul and Eli may get all the answers they’ll ever needed. If they can keep their s*** together that is, which may be a problem as Paul is ill and Eli is exhausted and delirious.. As the year rolls to an end, Paul and Eli decide to cram in one last walkabout adventure that will eventually push them a little harder than they were expecting! After discovering something called “The Celandine Route” they decide to take on all twelve miles of it in four hours, despite the guide suggesting it will take six. Can they pull it off and also attempt a modular, al fresco Price of Shite that Paul has procured? As you can imagine, it’s not going to be as easy as the Cheap Chaps think. Along the walk, which follows the River Pinn through green spaces, conservation areas and wildlife retreats, Paul and Eli will argue, complain, rage, laugh and annoy each other every step of the way. It’s been a little while, but Paul and Eli are back in the Country Urban Noodle Test Lab Kitchen to cram in as many noodle delights as possible. This week Eli has harvested six various types of instant cup noodles and they are quite the assortment of flavours, brands, and styles. Which of the range will come out on top? It probably won’t be the cup noodle that is out of date, that’s for sure!
