Ep 405: Return To The House of Pickles
EDue to circumstances beyond Paul & Eli’s control, they’re recording this week’s episode from inside the original House of Pickles… And Eli couldn’t be happier! To “celebrate” the Cheap Chaps are going back to basics with some good old fashioned content. To get things going, Eli has a red hot Sauce Report in more ways than one. He’s sourced two sauces from a nearby convenience store, which was handy, as its conveniently down the road from his place! Paul delivers another Page Turner segment with a book he’s been trying to get into the show for ages. As it transpires, this book got a bit more of a reputation following its appearance in a recent Ghostbusters movie! This publication promises a world of “Strange But True” stories guaranteed to confuse the podcast hosts. In other news, CheapShow invents a new pet and, sadly, it’s exactly what you think “Nougat The Saucy Horse” is! Ep 404: Superlative Decay
EIt’s an old school episode of CheapShow this week as Eli has collated the “Silverman’s Platters” and Paul has crafted a “Price of Shite” challenge. There is plenty of tat to sift though and some of it happens to be a little bit techy. Eli will have to guess the cost of a charity shop sourced neck fan, a tinker’s magic set, a nifty little magnifying glass and a weird radio with a great big pair of ruby red lips on it! What do they do? You’ll be sorry you asked! Making things extra annoying for Eli is Paul’s need to brute force a new character into existence. Will this miserable sod become a new hit, or will Eli lose his temper quickly? When it’s time for Eli to show off his latest vinyl record discoveries, he’s grabbed two very odd ducks. The first is an utterly shocking charity single designed to raise money for the UK’s Children In Need charity. What makes it noteworthy is the fact it is sung by two actors from the British soap opera Eastenders! The second offering from the record box is an odd couple of tracks from the beloved Joe Tex. They are certainly… something! But will they be considered a “platter” or a “splatter”? You can find out by listening to Ep 404 of CheapShow! Ep 403 An Invisible Touch
EPaul is not in the mood this week. He isn’t in the mood to be a podcaster. He isn’t in the mood to have a laugh. He isn’t in the mood for Eli. He isn’t in the mood for Eli’s vocal “chuntering” and all he IS in the mood for is a nap. Obviously, Eli loves this fact and is going to great pleasure in soaking up all of Paul’s self-loathing. All we are saying is, it may get personal this week! Luckily, there is some actual content, even if it’s not exactly the content they planned. Before they even get started, they take a tangent into the deeply scatological when they discover “rectal euphoria” is a thing and Eli suggests a new segment that ISN’T going to happen. CheapShow is back on the snacks, when they are introduced to Tayto “Might Munch” and given a taste test challenge. Meanwhile, a limited edition bag of Walkers crisps tries to gain entrance to the Snack Palace, but will it get in? Finally, Paul has a Charity Shop Showcase he believes will not only win Eli over, but also change the way we understand reality! As you can probably guess, it doesn’t go well for him. Ep 402: Tea 2: Judgement Tea
EWhen the call goes out, we answer! A recent which.com article looked into whether a posh cup of tea is any better than a cheap builder’s brew. When it comes to Tea, Paul and Eli are self-proclaimed experts and they decide to do their own mini taste test. Paul has bought cheap Tesco Own Brand, Yorkshire and Twinings tea to see if Eli can notice any considerable difference! Not only that, what does Eli think is the best? If you really want the answers to these enquiries, then give this podcast a listen! Before all that “science” happens, the cheap chaps have a gift box from New Zealand that contains some hot sauces AND a collection of candy that will delight and appal in equal measure! And finally, in a shocking turn of events, Eli has remembered Paul’s birthday! However, it will soon become apparent that he really shouldn’t have bothered! Ep 401: How Many Chevys?
EAfter all the excitement of 400, it’s back to the usual audio nonsense this week as Paul and Eli are joined by returning guest, Tom Mayhew! In a “much longer than expected” recording session, the terrible trio sample a range of odd fizzy pop and sample some homemade hot sauce! After much fuss, they’ve managed to secure the latest Coca Cola creation which is mixed with the flavour of Oreo cookies! Will it be more effervescent muck? Who knows? They also look into the curious fixation Germans apparently have with orange cola, and so they’ve got their hands on the premier brand to taste. As Tom is a bit of a Snooker fan, Paul’s found a board game based around the multi-balled sport called “Steve Davis Pot Black Snooker Break”! Hopefully it won’t be as dull as it looks. And FINALLY, Tom surprises Paul and Eli with a quiz about their past ventures, who will come out on top? We guess you will all have to find out by listening, won’t you? Ep 400: This Is NOT Episode 400
EThis is not Episode 400. It’s not an episode of CheapShow and it’s not the 400th. The 400th episode is on YouTube. We did a proper thing for 400, this is not that thing. This is a waste of your time. It’s sloppy, drunken, rambling, random, knocked off nonsense. PLEASE do NOT listen to this. Whatever this is. Ep 399: Rambling On (Mono Edition)
EIn a change to their usual fortunes, Paul and Eli are getting to talk about CheapShow in a proper TV show. They’ve been invited to the studios of London Live near the centre of London for a quick chat about their forthcoming 400th episode. However, once the interview is done, what are the Cheap Chaps going to do next. They don’t really have an idea either! So, when all is said and done, they will do what they do best… They ramble onwards. In an impromptu “walkabout” episode, they’ll zip through East London, along the South Bank and back into the city centre and take in the sights, sounds and unfortunate smells of the capital! 400 is coming and so Paul and Eli decide to chill and take it easy this week. Ep 398: Don't Get Got (Stereo Edition)
EIt’s a big old busy week at CheapShow HQ, as Paul and Eli are going to be spending most this week FILMING episode 400. However, this means that Paul doesn’t fancy doing a full proper editing job on the podcast, so demands a “real time” one hour episode. Uncut. Almost Uncut. Despite the tight time limit, the cheap chaps actually cram quite a lot into the episode. They’ll gobble down liquorice chocolate, slurp some odd Irn Bru soda, snack on some truffle chips and attempt to swallow a sour “Warhead’s flavoured” pickle. And that’s just the tip of the overstuffed iceberg. To make things even more “interesting”, Paul and Eli are playing a secret game in the background, but it’s threatening to detail the podcast before the show even gets started. Who will “Get Got”? Find out in this week’s breakneck episode! Ep 397: Two Hot Men
ESometimes it’s just too hot to record the podcast indoors. On the hottest day of the year, Paul and Eli take the episode outside to craft some sun-baked economy comedy content. However, this is not a “walkabout” episode, not at all! This is a “sitabout” episode. They venture to a quiet meadow near Crouch End called Shepherd’s Cot where they can record the podcast in relative privacy… Apart from all the random nosy dogs and weird men coming out of bushes! This week, Eli has brought along four unusual sodas to sample. Except one isn’t a soft drink. In fact, they’re not sure WHAT it is. Obviously, Eli loves it. Even in the scorching sun, Paul has time to play a game of The Price of Shite and Eli is looking for a victory for a change. Good luck to him! The sun’s out, so the fun’s out! Ep 396: Freddie Starr Swallowed My Soul
EOften, the “Paul’s Page Turners” segment of the show can offer up some wild and unfathomable books to investigate, but this week’s choice is a truly mad experience. Paul and Eli may be skeptics when it comes to all things supernatural, but they’re willing to hear a story out if it shows promise. The book in question was sold in Cancer Research Charity Shops across the UK and is entitled, “The Show Must Go On: Book Two”. Written by a possibly naïve believer, Malcom Thorogood’s proof of life after death comes in the form of visitations from one of the UK’s most notorious 1980s light entertainers… Freddie Starr! The man who allegedly ate a hamster (!!) and dealt in high energy, near crazed comedy is now back from the dead to offer some mindboggling experiences from beyond the grave. Paul is gobsmacked and Eli doesn’t believe one bit of it! But hey, if you don’t like ghosts there’s an “Off Brand Brand Off” segment to enjoy. Eli must rank FIVE orange soda brands to see if the Fanta or Tango brands are up to scratch compared to some considerably cheaper alternatives! See? There’s something for everyone! Ep 395: The Quid's Gambit
EAfter weeks of harassment, Paul and Eli finally get their hands on Heinz Pickle Ketchup this week and give their final analysis on the product. Will it be worth the wait? Probably not. It’s a packed episode in general with a Sauce Report, a Charity Shop Showcase and a PO Box sourced Price of Shite to evaluate. Paul’s CSS item was meant to be a showstopper, guaranteed to wow his co-host, but it may be that his offering is a load of old balls. Will it join the Showcase, or will it have No Place? The show wraps up with a truly useless Price of Shite competition, a festival of garbage to price up for those much desired “p’twings”. If all that isn’t enough, the podcast welcomes The King of Pepsi to the show and Eli takes an INSTANT dislike to him, AND Paul says, “the funniest thing he’s ever said”! That’s quite the claim, we guess it’s up to YOU to decide. Enjoy! Ep 394: A Bagful of Desperados
EYee-haw! Howdy Partners! This week, for no reason whatsoever, there is a “Wild West” theme to this particular “walkabout” episode. Paul and Eli are on the run from the Justice of the Peace and have decided to hide out in the woods and guzzle down their illegal moonshine. If the worst happens, they’ll have to shoot their way to freedom! What this actually means is that the Cheap Chaps will be putting on awful cowboy accents, running around Trent Park like idiots and drinking a range of unusual, flavoured Desperados beers. It has all the ingredients for an episode packed with chaos and stupidity. During their epic adventure, they’ll attempt to dangle from a broken swing, hold down that vile booze, abuse joggers under a obelisk and attempt a gun fight finale to see who is best sharpshooter! It’s a hot day and it’s all going to get weird and messy in this 2 hour 30 min odyssey! Ep 393: Popcorn And Polk
ECheapShow is back on the snacks on this edition of the economy comedy podcast. Thanks to yet another brilliant box of goodies from Ivenne, Paul and Eli will get to sample a range of weird and (hopefully) wonderful, flavoured popcorn. There will be some surprises along the way, some good and some very, very bad! One may even turn Paul’s stomach! After all the popcorn has been rated and reviewed, it’s time to pop over to Silverman’s Platter to investigate some “interesting” musical vinyl offerings. They’ll hear more from Black Lace and discuss their self-styled “holiday camp novelty pop” track, “I Speaka Da Lingo!”. It doesn’t end there either! CheapShow discovers the work of Jon Isherwood, Portsmouth’s own godfather of “Polk” music. What starts with “Apple Pie” will end with “The Cucumber Song” and Jon’s own legacy. If all that isn’t enough, Paul and Eli will be visited by food reviewer John Gunty who will give us his own thoughts, as long as his wife stops interrupting… And as ever… Poor Track Bot (you’ll find out why this week)! Ep 392 Professor Joke Thief
EIt’s been a while since Paul or Eli curated their own Price of Shite segment. Whilst it’s always delightful to receive P.o.S offerings in our PO Box, they wanted to see if they still had it in them to find the most weird and wonderful charity shop oddities. This week, Paul ran around Muswell Hill in North London to grab five items to parade before his co-host. It’s up to Eli to wade through all five curios and put a price on each and every one. As a result, this edition of The Price of Shite spans the whole length of the episode and bounces across some familiar CheapShow segments. We listen to a smutty sci-fi record, evaluate some board game merch, read up on some London Underground facts and even play an improvised rap based board game! And yes, it IS every bit as cringe as you fear! But WAIT! Who is this strange fellow lurking in the shadows? Who is Professor Joke Thief? Find out this week! Ep 391: Shepherd's Delight
EIf there is one thing you can say about Eli, it’s that he is tenacious when it comes to trying to sell an awful gag. His problem is he never thought to think ahead at what may happen next. Of course, Paul is going to try and run the joke into the ground and spoil it for everyone. Luckily, there is plenty to be getting on with. Eli’s found 3 condiments for The Sauce Report to taste and review. One is going to be cheesy, one is going to tasty, and one is going to piss Paul and Eli off greatly! The second half of the show brings you another Paul’s Pleasant Pastimes segment and Mr Gannon has got another one of games that really needs three players to enjoy properly. What pleasures will “Snake Oil” bring to the podcast? As you can most likely predict, it’s going to get out of hand (as per usual), when they attempt to become secret admirers, clowns & bouncers in a ropey bit of role play! Ep 390: Dérive Time!
ESometimes people accuse CheapShow of being “too” random. With that in mind, Paul and Eli are about to throw a bit of chaos theory into their usual “walkabout” episodes. Following the principles of “The Theory of the Dérive” and using an app called “Randonautica” CheapShow is heading into South London to plot an unplanned journey through its streets and parks. Will the Cheap Chaps stop focusing on their everyday relationship to their social environment and start seeing the world differently, or will all that booze they’ve brought along with them create the kind of chaos that no app could possibly generate? As Paul and Eli pinball around Colliers Wood (because why not?), they’ll battle the high temperatures, odd liminal locations and confusing maps until it all gets too much. It’s another epic adventure on an epically small scale! Ep 389: The Tomy Triple
EIf there is one thing CheapShow loves without exception, it’s Tomy toys from yesteryear! We’ve covered much of their back catalogue in the past, but this week we have three items that are very beloved. Paul and Eli get to tinker with kitties in a Water Wonderland game, battle sharks with the Tomytronic 3D “Shark Attack” toy and take on the challenge of Screwball Scramble: Level 2! How will Tomy fare? Only CheapShow has the answers! Also on the show, we wet our whistles with three soft drinks, two of which will probably be godawful, and investigate “milky straws” that are filled with candy flavoured beads. Will they make the milk better or worse? We sample two new “Candy Cans” but it’s almost a foregone conclusion that the cheap chaps will not take kindly to them. Maybe Eli’s new Red Bull (sigh) will save the day? If not, don’t worry, as Eli is obsessed with making crude jokes involving genitals and types of fish. As you can expect, Paul isn’t too impressed, but despite suffering from food poisoning whilst recording, he’s going to have to craft a gag to appease Eli before the day is over. Oh Joy! Ep 388: The 2024 Trash Cannes Film Festival (Interrupted)
ELights! Camera! Action! This week on CheapShow, we present the podcast edition of our YouTube Live Stream event… “The Trash Cannes Film Festival 2024” (sponsored by Graxton Industries)! Paul has arranged an evening of experimental short films, movie chat and a glittering awards ceremony. As you can imagine, it doesn’t exactly go to plan for Mr Gannon and there will be tears before bedtime as everything begins to collapse around him. A big part of Paul’s problem is Eli’s ego and his demands for “samples”. Will he get his hands on the mysterious Graxton chemicals and what will he say to accusations of plagiarism? Luckily, Ethan Lawrence joins us to add a bit of star power and represent his masterful mini movie! Sadly, Eli and Ethan are going to fall out, pretty quickly! And that’s before we even get to the horror of the short films themselves AND Channel 84’s sticky offering! FINALLY, as this event happened last week, Paul and Eli have recorded over 45 minutes of new, podcast exclusive, material to explain what’s going on and make many, many apologies. The show must go on! With HUGE thanks to: Tom from Channel 84, Ethan Lawrence for appearing live, Vorratony for the exclusive art for this episode AND Ash Frith, Stuart Ashen, Richard Sandling, Tom Mayhew, John Matthews, Ben Baker, Alexis Strum & Paul Putner for their contributions to the show! Ep 387: Day Clipper
EIt should’ve been an easy adventure for Paul and Eli. The plan was to meet at Woolwich Arsenal and get the Clipper west along the Thames to Putney Pier, along the way they would play some games and nibble on some snacks… But things are never that simple for the CheapShow boys! Instead, they’ll battle delayed trains, false starts, inaccurate timetables, cancelled bus routes and Paul’s insistence that Eli has become a drug addled gambler. They’ll do their best to fit some actual “cheap” content into this week’s episode, but it will be hard to do so in amongst their squabbling and ever changing travel plans. Will they make the Clipper? Will they get around to eating those Bubble Gum flavoured Crisps? Do they know where they are going? Will they even be able to get home? Find out in this accidentally epic race through the centre of London! Ep 386: Celebrities Squared
ETo Paul’s surprise, it turns out that CheapShow has never tackled the classic TV game show “Celebrity Squares” on Gannon’s Golden Games, so to rectify that, he’s whipping out the 1970s board game for this week’s episode. However, what makes “Celebrity Squares” so interesting are all those famous faces that gives the show a bit of class and humour, and the Cheap Chaps don’t have of those kinds of people hanging around… So, they will have to invent their own Celebrities instead, and that can only be a mistake, right? You’ll learn the hard way how successful they were! Before we get to that board game show down, there is an Off Brand/Brand Off to enjoy. Eli has his “supertaster” taste buds ready to go to see if he can spot the “Ben’s Original” microwavable Mexican Rice from the knock off offerings. Will the Aldi or Tesco alternatives come out on top and what will be the best value for money? As ever, CheapShow has all the answers, you just need to brave enough to press “Play”…! Ep 385: Fallow Moments
ESometimes all Eli and Paul need is a bit of Moog music to quell their troubled souls. What they present this week ranges from the misguided to the truly odd. On Silverman’s Platters they’ll investigate the strange Flamenco Moog, a track inspired by the sport of Ping Pong and a piece of music from a long forgotten, and oddly sci-fi flavoured, 1970s musical! Let’s hope the Cheap Chaps get through all these tracks quickly as Track-Bot is apparently about to reboot! Thanks to a kind listener, CheapShow has another PO Box sourced Price of Shite to investigate. As they try to guess the correct pounds and pence, they’ll discover a bit about the confectioners Bassetts, try to figure out the maths of 3D Tic-Tac-Toe and give their worthless opinions on the legendary Goon Show radio show. All this and much, much less! Ep 384: Dikkeneks
E“Is there such thing as Too Much Sauce?” That’s the question CheapShow will have to answer this week when Eli turns up to the recording with a massive bag of random sauces. Donated to the podcast following a live show last year, these sauces have been festering in The House of Pickles for months, just waiting to be devoured by eager mouths. That time is now. Originally there were 16 sauces to tackle, but luckily half of them can be discounted, but that still leaves 8 interesting condiments to put to the taste test. The only real problem here is that Paul is tired and grumpy and is in no mood to gobble down saucy muck. Things don’t get any better when the Price of Shite is revealed, leading to a rather fractured game of tat pricing action. It’s a choice selection, ranging from the odd to the deranged. Ep 383: Walk of the Shaun of the Dead
EIn 2004, Shaun of the Dead was released into cinemas and its particular mix of horror and comedy quickly made it a beloved cult classic… Turns out Paul was on set as a zombie extra during the production of this movie and he has a few stories to tell about it. It’s a pity he will hardly get the chance to do so! To celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, CheapShow decides to explore North London to hunt for some of the real life locations from the ZomRomCom hit. They’ll roam Finchley, Highgate, Crouch End and even take a long trip to South London for their final location in New Cross Gate. It’s an epic journey that has Eli trying to inject his own misinformed opinions and hijack the walk with his memories… Which means Paul can barely be able to recall his own! They’ll argue, digress and talk absolute garbage in yet another failed attempt to be taken seriously. Luckily, they manage to bump into comedian/actor Paul Putner who’ll offer a few of his own SotD stories to balance out Paul and Eli’s nonsense. See pics/videos for this episode on our website: https://www.thecheapshow.co.uk/ep-383-walk-of-the-shaun-of-the-dead Thanks to Paul Putner for joining us briefly on this walk too! Ep 382: A Right Royal Ready Salted Rank Off
ESometimes it can get TOO exciting on CheapShow at times! This week is no exception as Paul and Eli decide to see if all Ready Salted crisps are created equal. They’ve sourced six different types of “pre salted potato crisp snacks” to put through a rigorous flavour test, with Super Taster Eli J Silverman dolling out his expertise and opinions. Will the cheap Smiths crisps be able to compete with the mega brand Walkers, and how do they all stack up against the fancy kettle style crisps? It’s a potentially gripping segment, if you are the type of person to have strong beliefs on snacks. It’s not just salty treats on offer either! Paul has grabbed a load of super sour candies to excite and possibly appal the taste buds. Hopefully Paul doesn’t injure his mouth in the process. That would be terrible… About as terrible as his apparently psychic bum hole and dark homunculus magic spells. Oh CheapShow, never change! Ep 381: Three Swiss Francs
EOh Muvva! This week’s episode of CheapShow is a brain melting, word gargling, logic defying audio adventure into the madness of Paul and Eli. Eli is excited to showcase another Noodle Pot Blitz with a wide range of favours and gimmicks. Some will delight and some will disgust, but they will ALL be judged by the world’s best noodle opinionators. Elsewhere in the podcast, CheapShow “scholar” Ivenne has sent the Cheap Chaps another Price of Shite package, packed with an assortment of weird and woeful items. Sadly, this leads to one of CheapShow biggest s*** shows. It also doesn’t help that Paul and Eli are running on fumes and you know what that means for the actual comedy content of this episode… It’s going to get weird. Ep 380: Brand Aide
EIt’s common on CheapShow that we’ll have to look at the genesis of a very popular (or obscure) brand and often run straight to the arms of Wikipedia. Well, no more! In this week’s episode, Paul’s found a book called “How It All Began” that gives the potted history of some of the world’s most popular brands. There’s way too much to cover in one episode, so the cheap chaps pick a page each and find out more about the birth of plasticine and Y Fronts. Yes, Y Fronts! It’s a book that may come in handy in the future. Gannon’s Golden Games returns with a board game based on a reasonably recent ITV show that Paul & Eli have never heard of, nor care much for. However, it leads to one of the most exciting, twisty and thrilling games in the pod’s history. As if all that wasn’t enough, Graxton Industries have challenged CheapShow to create an event for sponsorship in the near future, but will their eventual plan be any good? Only time will tell. Also… Can Eli PLEASE stop grabbing his crotch, please?! Ep 379: Expressionate Men
EIt’s another week of American snacks as Eli brings more sweet treats to the table. How will the Cosmos Oreos, Hostess Orange Cupcakes and Dr Pepper Peeps go down? More importantly, what exactly do Horse flavoured fried bread taste like? Paul and Eli are going to find out. There are some musical curios to listen to this week, and in a change from the norm, Paul is bringing the vinyl record goodness instead. There is a fascinating dive in the life of radio presenter and “soul singer” Steve Walsh and we also find out what a disco hit designed to entice Burnley Building Society customers sounds like… Especially when you consider who wrote the lyrics! Sadly, the addition of music to the show means another appearance from Trackbot and he still being defiled by anyone and everyone! It’s all very sticky business. Ep 378: Gob Job
EEvery year Eli races off to Florida to spend time with his family, but he always makes sure he brings back something for the show. This week on CheapShow, Eli has a big bag of bounty filled to the brim with all kinds of snacks, treats and drinks. Maybe too many. It’s a food stuffed episode of CheapShow that has the cheap chaps tackle Buffalo Cheetos, Doritos Dinamita Sticks, Hot Nuts and (sadly for Paul) potted meat. Horrible potted meat. Hopefully the soft drink segment of the podcast will wash away any unpleasantness, as there are three fun sodas to sample. The only downside is that this part of the show allows Paul to make a load more enemies by proclaiming his hate for a particular type of pop! In amongst all the snacking, we get to catch up with TrackBot… Poor old TrackBot! Ep 377: Barshens Rises
EThey said it would never happen, but somehow it has! For the first time in over 5 years, the Barshens team have gathered in London for a special reunion episode of CheapShow! Paul and Eli welcome Stuart Ashen, Barry Lewis, Chris Bullock, Ryan Livermore and Izzie Jones (kinda) into their podcast world. It’s a packed show. Paul kicks things off with a few Sharticles, ranging from sexed up whales and dead hamsters to late library books and smooth bollocks. Along the way, there’ll be plenty of nonsensical tangents too. Not only that, but Paul crafts a Gannon’s Golden Games Gauntlet edition of Bars Vs Hens. Barry versus Stuart in three games to test their agility, creativity and dexterity. It’s the ultimate game of skill with a shocking outcome! Ryan and Chris get to play along too, as they’ll be betting on who will win AND play The Price of Shite for some quality p’twings! If you need your Barshens fix, this is the episode you have (probably) all been waiting for. Barshens Rises!! Ep 376: Nightbussin'
EIt’s been long requested and finally, this week on CheapShow, you are getting what you asked for. It’s time to go Nightbussin! London has a large number of bus routes that start after midnight and run until the early morning. These routes help people get about the capital city at all hours, whether they are coming home from a late shift at work, or desperate to get home after a wild night out and the tubes are all closed. Night Busses are an important part of London and Paul and Eli are going to take one of these routes and invite you along. For their first adventure, for some reason, they have chosen the N18. It starts in Harrow and winds its way south towards Trafalgar Square. What will they witness, what will they remember and will it just be ANOTHER excuse for Eli to talk about himself and his younger days again? Either way, you’ll be on the journey with them in “real time”. “Ding, Ding!”, the cheap chaps are off on another rambling adventure! Ep 375: Scared Of Us
ESometimes, when Paul and Eli ask a big name to join the podcast, they fully expect the answer to be No. So when comedy legend Robert Popper agrees to appear, the Cheap Chaps are going to have to pull out all the stops to make this episode special. Luckily, Robert has come prepared and he’s brought along with him something sonically demented. It’s been a guilty pleasure of Robert’s for over 30 years and he’s agreed to share it with CheapShow. Prepare your ears for something even Urinevision would reject. What is “Scared of Me”? Who is Clifford? You’ll find out soon enough! Meanwhile, Paul has decided to make this week’s “Price of Shite” extra special for their guest. He’s tailored his cheap treasures around Robert’s career… But Paul may have gotten a bit confused. As if that wasn’t enough, we have another extra special guest who pops up to make for a grand finale! Cor blimey guv’nor! I can’t believe my ears! Ep 374: Noodle Boutique
EIt’s been a while, but Eli and Paul are finally diving into a new batch of instant noodle. It’s a new year and because the Country Urban Noodle Testlab Kitchen is “occupied”, Eli is going to have to open up the “Noodle Boutique”. It’s a place where Eli can show off his hand picked noodle discoveries, and this week, he’s got two very interesting examples! Will they pass muster? Listen and find out! Paul contributes to this episode by simply p****** Eli off with a range of new and annoying characters. There’s a mean old man, a Scouse poet and a desperate ghost hunter out to ruin Eli’s return to noodletown. Maybe a quick game of The Price of Shite will make him feel better. Spoiler Warning: It doesn’t! More mucky business on CheapShow awaits you. Ep 373: The Towel Mines
EIt’s time to get our much on! After a bit of break, Paul and Eli are venturing back to the Snack Palace to welcome a new bunch of snack candidates to see if they are worthy of entry to the hallowed building. There are three products arriving on the Segment Bus (don’t ask!) and they’ll prove to be interesting characters in their own horrible right! However, there is something dark lurking under the glamourous façade of the Palace. What happens to all the lost snacks who don’t even make it into the pool house? What are the Towel Mines? The answer may appal you. Or confuse you. There is also time for a quick “Off Brand / Brand Off” with the popular Quavers taking on a cheaper supermarket brand facsimile! Will Eli the Supertaster figure out the flavour code and choose wisely? Why not listen and find out? Ep 372: Books Bunny
EThis week’s episode is all a bit random and bemusing. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Bugs Bunny ever visited London in the early 1970s? The answer may confuse you. In a Charity Shop Showcase, Paul is offering up a strange child’s album featuring Warner Brother’s most famous Looney Tunes that brings up way too many questions. Eli has a few odd trinkets himself, a curious assortment of toys, games and tiny toys, but Paul would rather get into his Page Turners segment! There are three books to investigate, ranging from comedy double act tie-in annuals to a large helping of 1980s nostalgia with Smash Hits 1985. It’s the final book that proves to be the most interesting. What if you turned Cadbury’s Crème Eggs into a literal egg hunt? One book, following in the trail of the legendary “Masquerade”, will present its own “Conundrum”! Find out more in this week’s economy comedy podcast! Ep 371: Sauce Of The Gladiators
EDo you feel the power of the Gladiators? Can you face the challenge of the champions? Do you have the courage of a hero? Do you have the will and the skill? Paul and Eli are going to find out this week when they attempt to play a board game based on the hit 1990s Saturday evening TV series, “Gladiators”. They’ll reminisce over their memories of the show, cover a tiny bit of its history and poke about for any mucky anecdotes before throwing down the board and playing the game… Which is probably for the best because game… Well, it’s not great! Also, after a bit of a break, Eli is back with his “Sauce Report” with a number of sweet and hot condiments to slurp down. Was it a good idea to resurrect this segment, or will the Cheap Chaps just be slurping down out of date sauce until the end of days? Find out this week, in a show packed with new characters, old gags and vast amounts of nonsense words. Ep 370: A Good Old Rummage
EPaul is SO close to finishing his (long in gestation) book this week, so wants to keep this week’s show simple. As a result, he is pulling out his big box of tat and inviting Eli to dive in and pull out anything of value, of interest or of pure disgust. It’s another real time episode with 60 minutes on the clock to wade through years’ worth of lost and forgotten cheap trinkets. There are odd albums to quickly listen to, pretty far out of date snacks and candies to munch on, a cassette of cartoon tunes to remember, some army rations to mull over and a whole range of weird odds and ends! Chances are, if you sent something to CheapShow over the years, it’s finally time to see if Paul kept hold of it long enough for this episode. Hold on tight, this one is a mad rush to the finish line! Ep 369: The Sounds of London 2024
EA long time ago, CheapShow was sent an unusual 7” vinyl record called The Sounds of London. The record contained an audio snapshot of the sounds of Britain’s capital in 1967. It’s a fascinating collage of iconic sounds and environmental background noises, offering a unique peek into the past. Rather than talk it about it on a Silverman’s Platter segment, Paul & Eli decided to go out into the centre of London to try and recreate it instead! This week, they’ll race around with their portable recording kit and try and collect as many modern takes of the original vinyl as possible. The Cheap Chaps will zip from Trafalgar Square, to Waterloo, back to Piccadilly Circus and on towards Fleet Street grabbing all the sounds they can! Will they be magnificently successful or will they completely cock it up? It’s a walkabout adventure that takes in bird dirt, arguments with elevators, a lucky break with the bells of St. Clements and a grotty plan to abuse a street performer! It’s the Sounds of London 2024 in the only way CheapShow knows how. Thanks to @vorratony for the special art this week! Ep 368: Ennery Of Keverett
EIt’s a proper jam packed, tat stuffed episode this week. Paul and Eli go head to head in one of most fiercely fought editions of The Price of Shite to date. Thanks to a PO box delivery, there is a wealth of charity store sourced items to peruse and evaluate for those sweet, sweet P’twings. From gadgets to board games, via retro magazines, grizzly VHS tapes and 90s nostalgia, there is a little bit of everything! Sadly, its during the Charity Shop Showcase where things go awry. Eli is in charge of the mystery item and Paul is not going to be happy when he finds out what he’s been fiddling with. It’s just another week in paradise for CheapShow. Ep 367: Pork Laureate
EIt’s Radio CheapShow time. Sort of! It’s another whole episode dedicate to the utterly confounding world of vinyl record discoveries. Paul and Eli have unearthed some truly weird and confusing 7 inchers that will most likely be a chore to listen to. This week, the Cheap Chaps consider if “hustling” will really help them get ahead, unravel the dumb logic of an Electro song about The Lone Ranger, sample the delights of a Terrahawks pop princess and debate the musical legitimacy of Cannon & Ball. Along the way, a few upsetting new characters bubble out of the nonsense with a rather distasteful dog and a pointless robot taking up everyone’s valuable time. More economy comedy awaits! Ep 366: Graxton's Gruft
EIt’s been a while, but CheapShow is ready to dive into the cheats, liars and conmen of the past. This week, Paul and Eli take a look into the life of journalist Louis T Stone, who spun many a tall tale and become notorious for his outrageous reports. However, they soon learn that when it comes to truth in journalism, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Once Mr Stone has been put away, it’s time for “Paul’s Pleasant Pastimes” and it’s one that should put their terrible mouth noise skills to good use. Will playing “Soundiculous” drive them mad? The odds are good! CheapShow this week is brought to you by the various fine chemical products from Graxton Industries. Ep 365: Big Can Energy
EWelcome to CheapShow 2024! A new year of adventures, laughs and meltdowns awaits you. Sadly, your hosts are ABSOLUTELY not in the mood to get back into the swing of things. Eli is deathly ill and (frankly) should have cancelled and Paul is left to desperately pick up the slack. Badly. What should’ve been a powerhouse first episode of the year is more like a desperate fever dream instead. Maybe if Paul sings more, things will go alright? They’ve got a mountain of sugary sweet treats to throw themselves into this week and it may not have been the wisest idea at the end of the day. What are IRN BRU branded energy drinks like, and was it a good idea for Barratt to lend their famous candy flavours to “spreadable mallow”? You’ll find out the hard way, just like Paul and Eli did. Also, Eli has a thing about dogs this week. We’ll have to blame his illness… This week! Ep 364: A Christmas Constitutional
EAfter the drunken madness of the 5th Annual Christmas Office Party, Paul and Eli decide to end the year on a more reflective note. On the recommendation of YouTuber John Rogers, the Cheap Chaps take a merry wander through London, starting in Angel, Islington and ending in Highgate Village. It’s a walk that allows Paul & Eli to revisit a few old haunts and discover a few new corners of the Capital at the same time. Along the way they’ll dish out a bonus/unnecessary Tales from the Dance Floor, tell a few stories from their early stand-up comedy days and open a few surprise presents too! It’s CheapShow’s final episode of 2023, everyone! Merry Christmas, see you in 2024! X Thank You ALL for listening/supporting CheapShow throughout 2023! It means the world to us. Ep 363: The 5th Annual Office Christmas Party
EBrace yourself! It’s time for the one episode of the year that always turns into an utter s***fest. It’s the 5th Annual Office Christmas Party and it’s going old school! After the tumultuous events of last year’s ambitious party, Paul has booked an actual abandoned office space to host his office shindig. He’s bought all the food, arranged all the booze and designed a very special Price of Shite. Eli has simply, begrudgingly, turned up. Over the next two and a half hours, you’re going to hear Eli form a union, Paul gets a little bit too drunk a little too fast, copious amounts of weird food consumed, a string of ugly cocktails spoiled by novelty mixers AND suffer through the toxic blasts of Eli’s guts. They’re going to try to “Eat, Drink and be Merry” but it’s more likely they’re going to “scoff, slurp and be angry”! Let’s just hope ALL those very special guests Paul invited turn up… See pics/videos for this episode on our website: https://www.thecheapshow.co.uk/ep-363-5th-annual-office-xmas-party With special thanks to Ethan Lawrence, Tom Mayhew, Nick Helm, Sooz Kempner, Paul Rose, Ash Frith, Octavious King, Brian Wecht and Leighton Gray! Ep 362: Fluid Beef
EAs 2023 winds down, Paul and Eli are coming apart at the seams. Can they mentally make it over the New Year finish line? Judging by this week’s episode, it’s going to be touch and go. It’s apparent from the start that Paul is in full chaotic evil mode and that going to make life difficult for Eli. Eli doesn’t make it easy for himself either, by being overly honest about something we’d all rather move on from talking about. Obviously, Paul is going to exploit that to extreme lengths. There is a PO Box sourced Price of Right to explore but Paul has slipped in a ringer. However, because he can’t win any points this episode, Paul is going to out of his way to make sure Eli doesn’t. Finally, Gannon’s Golden Games unearths a “party game” called F* That, which is exactly what they think after playing it. It’s a fiery episode of CheapShow to warm your cockles! Ep 361: A.I. Soda From The Year 3000
EIt looks like Paul and Eli are finally back in the House of Mash and Eggs after a month of LA adventures and they’re trying to get back into the groove. It’s not long before they are arguing, shouting and exaggerating again like they’d never been away. It seems that Hollywood had no effect on them at all. To ease themselves back into the old CheapShow game, they’re taking on some new and unusual sodas and diving back into Eli’s record box to sample some silly singles. Once again Coca Cola Creations rears its ugly head with a new coke allegedly created by A.I from the year 3000… or something like that? How will a computer crafted cola fare? Will it be any better than the Pokémon themed “cheese and salt water” fizzy drink? They’re going to find out the hard way. In Silverman’s Platters, it’s a trio of tracks to endure that bounces from early library music electronica, singing sheep and the ruddy Chegwin brothers! Who IS Jeff Chegwin anyway? Ep 360 Cheapitiser (Live)
ECheapShow wraps up its November month of very special episodes with a live show recorded as part of the Cheerful Earful Podcast Festival on November 4th at the Streatham Space Project, South London. What happens when the vulgar, explosive nonsense of CheapShow teams up with the unnerving silliness of Digitiser? If you want to find out, listen to this episode of the economy comedy podcast! In 60 minutes, Paul, Eli, Mr Biffo and Sanja will take you on a random, hectic and damn near shambolic live show that just about gets across the finish line. Paul and Eli are still a little jetlagged from their Los Angeles adventure and bring some culinary leftovers from their trip. What American snacks will fail to pass muster and which will win over our stern judges? They also decide to give Mr Biffo a taste of The “Is It Mayo?” game and the outcome is one that causes Eli to leave the stage to go to the toilet. The grand finale of this week’s episode is the premiere performance of Beanus’ new play. It’s a production that tells you the REAL genesis of his story and isn’t deeply troubling AT ALL! Join us for the (not so) greatest show on Earth! Ep 359: Stars Over 45
EIt's sadly time to say goodbye to America in the final episode of our Los Angeles Trilogy! However, if they are going to go out, they're going to go out in style! They're going to go BIG and then GO HOME when they somehow manage to wrangle the biggest guest of their weird existance! Joining Paul and Eli this week is comedian, actor, musician and slightly bemused human, Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! On Cinema, Us, Office Hours)! How will he fare in a world of rockney, music mash ups, horror themed hip hop, cockney geezers, Disney education books, walkie talkies and Buddha boards? They're also joined by Brian Wecht (Ninja Sex Party) for a mix of vinyl treats and Price of Shite tricks! As a grand finale, Noiselund graces the economy comedy podcast with one more LA G-funk type track (kinda), taking us out in style! Thanks to Tim Heidecker for taking the time to record with us! Thanks to Brian Wecht for looking after us for a week and to Leighton Gray for being our technician for this recording! Ep 358: CheapShow Does Leighton Night
EIt's the second of three episodes recorded in Los Angeles and this week they are joined by Brian Wecht and Leighton Gray, the hosts of the rather lovely "Leighton Night with Brian Wecht"! In a change to the usual format for both shows, Paul and Eli will be filling their episode with Leighton Night content and offering their own takes on that show's segments. They'll be dishing out "peaches and lemons", leaning harder on the lemons (annoying things) than on the peaches (lovely things) and telling everyone "What's Poppin?". True to Leighton Night's format, Paul will go all in on this particular gimmick! Eli just about remembers to turn up. How will Brian and Leighton fare when they get their own segments thrown right back in their faces? Find out this week! BONUS: You'll be able to see how Part Two of this cross-over podcast event pans out by listening to "Ep 193 Leighton Night Does CheapShow" of Leighton Night with Brian Wecht on all participating podcast platforms!
