Persons with disabilities, and their families, seek to be included in the full life of the Church. God’s vision of love calls us to bring about this reality. Come explore ways faith communities and the faithful can foster a culture of inclusion so that all members of the Body of Christ can live a sacramental life! Ep 62Co-Responsibility & Conflict Management: Some Resources for Ministers

Unaddressed disagreements or conflict between people in ministry is often cited as a source of lower morale and alienation in the life of the church. Such unresolved tensions can be especially fraught in times of additional tension and polarized positions. The pandemic and social traumas which our world, our nation and our church have endured especially over the past year, but reaching back longer, have often exacerbated interpersonal conflict in ministry, especially as both human and financial means of support become more limited. It is thus vital that when we speak about co-responsibility in the life of the church we encourage the development of skills for understanding both the causes of conflict and how to manage them, even when a resolution seems elusive. Conflict must also not be resolved by sacrificing integrity or the demands of justice. Conflict literacy and management are skills which all people, including those who minister in the name of the Church and in the Spirit of Christ, should develop. Drawing upon insights from theologian Dr. Ann Garrido in her book Redeeming Conflict: 12 Habits for Christian Leaders, this presentation focuses on some of the human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral dimensions of these skills, and encouraged small and large group conversation about how they might apply in your ministry context. Ep 58Presentation: Grace and Bias: A Theological Reflection on Racism

Racism is a moral and spiritual problem. Jesus Christ made it clear that all kinds of vices flow from the human heart. (Mark 7: 20 – 23) If we do not seek to convert our own hearts as well as the hearts of others in our efforts to overcome racism, then we will be left with “tolerance” between the races and not the real “reconciliation and healing” that is truly needed. Pastoral leaders need to first deal with what might be contained in their own hearts regarding racism, before seeking to help others to overcome racism. This Theological Reflection on Racism by Bishop Fabre, Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, will make use of sacred scripture to guide a spiritual reflection on how we can proceed to overcome racism in our own hearts and in the hearts of others. Ep 56Presentation: Creating a Safe Space for Dialogue about Racism

Many of us find it challenging to talk about uncomfortable topics, especially when there is potential for offending someone or creating interpersonal conflict. This is especially true with conversations about race and racism. So how do we learn to broach difficult topics and also foster an environment for authentic dialogue in a ministry setting? In the current climate where race, culture and racial dynamics are at the forefront of our society, A. Mechelle Haywood, Psy.D., offers skills for engaging in conversations about racism and other issues of difference. Ep 54Presentation: Implicit Bias: Tools for Self-Development

The ever-growing diversity of the Church and our world continues to enrich and challenge pastoral ministers in new ways. Implicit bias, or the attitudes and stereotypes that affect our behavior in an unconscious manner, can impact our ability to successfully manage intercultural interactions and diverse ministry environments. Understanding the implicit biases we hold and how personal identity and cultural experiences impact our worldview can facilitate personal growth and development as an effective pastoral leader.
