Ep 251Blogcast: Saint Francis of Assisi and a True Love of Creation
This blogcast explores “Saint Francis of Assisi and a True Love of Creation," written by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess and read by Tom Carani.“Saint Francis of Assisi and a True Love of Creation," written by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess and read by Tom Carani. In her blog post, Fatima discusses that St. Francis is commonly looked on as a person who simply loved animals. However, as described by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’: on care for our common home, St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan Order and his feast day is October 4th, is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically. We are called by Pope Francis, with St. Francis as our model, to care for and respect our common home and care for our neighbors who are exploited by consumerism and the throw away culture. Laudato Si’ offers the examples of food waste while many go hungry, fishing communities harmed by the pollution of water and depletion of fishing reserves, the change in sea levels forcing impoverished coastal populations to migrate, as well as “the premature death of many of the poor, in conflicts sparked by the shortage of resources” (Laudato Si’, 48). Ep 225Blogcast: Loving Our Elderly
“Loving Our Elderly,” by Braden Lynch. In his blog post, Braden describes the need and responsibility we all have to care for our grandparents, the elderly, sick, and dying in our lives, especially in light of Pope Francis’ establishment of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Braden specifically reflects on his grandmother and he growing dependence on her family members and how this was a time for the family to grow in love. He invites us to enter into these moments and draw upon the grace of our Lord and use it to grow in love. The international World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly was established by Pope Francis in 2021 and is celebrated on the 4th Sunday in July near the liturgical memorial of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus and the parents of the Virgin Mary, which is celebrated on July 26th. Some ideas for celebrating grandparents day include: writing a card, calling them on the phone, spending the day with them, share a meal. Ep 201Son Rise Morning Show 04/05/2023: Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. on the Sacred Paschal Triduum
In this segment from the Son Rise Morning Show, Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. discusses the Sacred Paschal Triduum, the three most solemn, holiest days of the Church year, beginning on Holy Thursday, continuing with Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, and concluding with Evening Prayer II on Easter Sunday. Fr. Frank discusses the liturgies of the triduum, including: the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Commemoration of the Passion of the Lord, the Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday. On Holy Thursday, there may be a Chrism Mass celebrated at the Cathedral where the sacred sacramental oils are blessed for the next year and there is a Mass in the evening with the Mandatum, the washing of the feet as Jesus did, followed by a procession of the Blessed Sacrament to an altar of repose where the faithful can pray with Christ. On Good Friday, the church buildings are stripped bare, like Jesus was on the way to Calvary, and the Blessed Sacrament is not present. A Liturgy of the Word is celebrated followed by Communion and veneration of the Holy Cross. Next, on Holy Saturday, the bells are quiet as the Church prepares for the Easter Vigil where the Paschal Candle is blessed and the Exultet is sung, followed by the return of the Alleluia. The faithful will renew their Baptismal vows and prepare for the Resurrection of the Lord. Finally, Easter Sunday Mass is celebrated where again the faithful will renew their Baptismal vows.
