Basketball in rear view mirror | Spring football resumes this week for Buckeyes
Basketball season is over for Ohio State and spring football practice resumes this week for the Buckeyes. What does Chris Holtmann need to accomplish in 2022-23 in order to get the fans on his side? On the football front, this will be the week when the Buckeyes start implementing schematic changes on both sides of the ball; mostly on defense of course. But there will be tweaks on offense as well with Justin Frye now leading the offensive line. Dave Biddle flies solo on this edition of the Monday 5ish to discuss that and much more. Sweeping changes by Knowles, or gradually implement? | Ohio State-Loyola predictions | Holt's job status?
Will Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles make sweeping changes to his unit right away, or will he gradually implement the new things he is bringing to the Buckeyes? On the basketball front, what are our predictions for Ohio State's game this afternoon against Loyola-Chicago? If the Buckeyes lose, is Chris Holtmann's job in jeopardy? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual end-of-week visit to discuss that and more on the Friday 5ish. WHAC guest list reveal | Feeling Florida | Ohioans under pressure
What's up at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center? The list recruiting visitors coming through is epic. So we had to match that firepower with the Dean of Ohio State Recruiting Bill Kurelic and is if that wasn't enough Mark Porters also joined. These guys are really starting to get the hang of Thursdays. Was the show without intrigue? Well ... technology is always fun. But we did break down a litany of subjects including Carnell Tate, Florida in focus and which Buckeyes we expect to shine as the offseason progresses. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Will Urban coach again? | Difference between rugby-style, traditional tackling | Guards playing guard
There is much to discuss on today's show as Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle. We are answering questions posed by Bucknuts subscribers via The Front Row message board and there is certainly a wide variety of topics. Will Urban Meyer coach again? What is the difference between rugby-style tackling and traditional tackling? Should guards always play guard on offensive lines, or is it OK for natural tackles to play there too? And we even discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine. No really, we do. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Thoughts on Buckeyes' NCAA draw | Takeaways from first week of spring football for Ohio State
It is equal parts Ohio State basketball and football on today's show as Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle. The Buckeyes received a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play 10th-seeded Loyola-Chicago in the first round on Friday at 12:15 p.m. ET. Is it a difficult matchup for OSU? Yes. But that would have been the case when facing any of the 10 seeds in this year's Big Dance. Also: * Why are the Buckeyes such a poor defensive basketball team? * Does Patrick think Kyle Young and Zed Key will play against the Ramblers? * What were the big takeaways from the first week of spring football? * Will the Buckeyes' offensive line be better this season? If so, why? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. After JSN, who is Buckeyes' best WR? | Hoops squad in freefall mode
There is much to discuss on the Ohio State football front as Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit. The Buckeyes kicked off spring ball this week and much was gleaned. * Unfortunately, we have to start with some bad news as offensive lineman Harry Miller announced on Thursday he is retiring from football. Miller revealed he has been battling depression and had suicidal thoughts. We obviously wish the young man nothing but the best. He is an excellent person who does a lot of charity work, and we just hope he is able to get his mental health where it needs to be. * On Thursday, the media interviewed Ohio State's running backs and wide receivers. Regarding the WRs, other than Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is the best wideout on the squad? Is it Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka or Julian Fleming? * How excited are we about the RB tandem of TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams? Hint: extremely. Also, Henderson made headlines yesterday when he let it slip that he played with a concussion during the 2021 season. JBook is perplexed why Henderson would say that to the media. * How excited are we about OSU's men's basketball team? Hint: not at all. The Buckeyes have managed to suffer recent losses against the likes of Maryland, Nebraska, Michigan ... and now Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament last night. Talk about a freefall at the worst possible time. They'll still make the NCAA Tournament, but they might be a No. 9 seed and could easily be one-and-done for the second consecutive year. All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. What We Learned from Buckeyes' first day of spring ball
Spring football began on Tuesday for Ohio State and there was a cavalcade of information gleaned. Mitchell Melton has moved from linebacker to defensive end, eight scholarship players will miss all of spring -- including Harry Miller which continues to be a mystery -- and several young players are having great offseasons such as wide receiver Jayden Ballard, and cornerbacks Jakailin Johnson and Jordan Hancock. In addition, the media interviewed head coach Ryan Day, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson following practice. On today's show, Dave Biddle flies solo to discuss all the happenings from yesterday, what it means for the 2022 season and more. That is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Spring football kicks off for Buckeyes tomorrow | Hoops squad in free fall at worst time
Spring football begins tomorrow for Ohio State and a portion of practice is open to the media. We will also interview head coach Ryan Day, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles after practice. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss spring ball kicking off for the Buckeyes, plus: * What are the main storylines for the Buckeyes this spring? * What will fourth-year junior Cade Stover's role be this year? Many are presuming he will be the hybrid OLB/DE in Knowles' scheme. Is that a safe assumption? * Ohio State's basketball team lost to visiting Michigan in the regular-season finale yesterday. This has been a disappointing season for Chris Holtmann's squad, especially lately. Is there any hope they can do damage in the Big Ten Tournament and then more importantly in the NCAA Tournament? * What seed will they likely get in the Big Dance? UM loss fueling Buckeyes' offseason | Day follows gut with defense | Olave is fast | L for the Izzo
It is a jam-packed Friday version of the show as Jonah Booker drops by for his usual end-of-week visit. Most of the show is dedicated to Ohio State football and we end with a taste of Buckeye basketball. On the agenda: * Ryan Day said this week that the Buckeyes' loss to Michigan continues to fuel his team during the offseason. * Day also said he knew in his gut that he needed to make a change defensively after the Alabama game in the 2020 national championship contest. The Oregon game confirmed it. And now Day has his man in Jim Knowles. * Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are fast. Faster that most people expected when they ran the 40 at the NFL Combine yesterday. * The up-and-down season continues for OSU's hoops team. And "big ups" to them for their 80-69 win over visiting Michigan State and the legendary Tom Izzo last night. Izzo took a shot at Ohio State's fans and the environment at the Schott after the game. He wasn't wrong, but was it his place to say it? All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. State of the Ohio State Basketball Program Address
There's bad losses. And then there is ... whatever the hell happened to Ohio State's basketball team last night. The Buckeyes -- who were 15-point favorites and had a win probability of 95.5 percent -- were beaten by Big Ten cellar dweller Nebraska 78-70 at the Schott. And that came on the heels of OSU's upset loss at Maryland on Sunday when the Terrapins dominated to the tune of 75-60. We can all be prisoners of the moment at times and overreact, especially when it involves our sports teams. However, this is year No. 5 of the Chris Holtmann era at Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 18-9 overall and 11-7 in Big Ten play, and they are a lock to make the NCAA Tournament. But should the program be further ahead at this point? It's time for the State of the Ohio State Basketball Program Address. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle for that, plus some quick thoughts on spring football opening for the Buckeyes on Tuesday. Madness set to begin | Spring ball questions for Buckeyes | B1G to break bank with TV contracts
Ohio State's men's basketball team looked bad in a loss at Maryland yesterday, but the Buckeyes are still a lock to make the NCAA Tournament and will likely have a double-bye in the Big Ten tourney. How do we feel about this team one day before March begins? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, the main things we will be looking for when spring football starts next week for OSU, the Big Ten being on the verge of breaking the bank with its new TV contracts and more. JBook on Schottenstein & Cardale's NIL foundation, what it means for Buckeyes
It is almost official. Brian Schottenstein and Cardale Jones will be operating an NIL group called "The Foundation" which will assist OSU athletes in their NIL ventures. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that in detail, plus: * Who are players to watch for the Buckeyes on both sides of the ball during spring? * Did Michigan get it right with their punishment of Juwan Howard? [Note: We recorded the show just before tip-off of Ohio State's win at Illinois in men's basketball last night.] All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Questions that must be answered
You asked. We answered. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for the Friday as we take questions from our subscribers. Among the topics on the agenda: ** How much will the Luke Montgomery commitment help Ohio State land other top 2023 recruits? ** Should the Big Ten do away with divisions? ** If Ohio State could host a College Football Playoff game, should it be at Ohio Stadium (yes) or in Indianapolis (no)? ** Should the Big Ten have eight or nine conference games per season? ** Is there a push to have spring high school football in Ohio? ** How much will Ryan Day make when he eventually signs a new contract at Ohio State? ** Should defensive backs almost always look back toward the ball when making a play? ** How will the Buckeyes' offensive line look next season? Ohio's No. 1 prospect commits today | Louisiana love | NIL wins and losses
Today is a biggie for Ohio State on the recruiting trail. The Buckeye State's top Class of 2023 prospect will make his college plan known. Findlay's Luke Montgomery will announce his commitment on CBS HQ at 3 p.m. EST. Montgomery's finalists include Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson, Michigan and Notre Dame. He's the nation's No. 4-ranked offensive tackle, according to the 247Sports Composite. What's next for the Buckeyes? Should NIL be regulated? How?
The media will meet with Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith today at 11:30 a.m. There are a number of things Bucknuts is curious to ask Smith, but at the top of the list is what to do about players being able to profit off of their name, image and likeness in college athletics. Right now, it's basically the wild west with no rules. Should there be regulations? If so, what should they entail? Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, the scholarship crunch that the football team faces, the Buckeyes' basketball team getting rolling at the right time and more. Duane on LB prospect: 'My lord' | Targeting defensive tackle, safety
This is what Ohio State fans pined for. New defensive coordinator Jim Knowles brings hope the Buckeyes can return to defensive dominance. Several years of subpar performances sandwiched around a Jeff Halfey-led radar blip meant change was in order. Now it's about getting current personnel up to speed and finding prospects that best fit the Knowles approach. Translation: Ohio State needs several defensive tackles and safeties - the latter of which has an added emphasis in the scheme. So how is this for synergy? Our Bill Kurelic has identified four safeties and three defensive tackles the Buckeyes are chasing and Duane Long is here to let you know what he thinks of each prospect. (Kurelic has also identified cornerbacks and receivers Ohio State is chasing which we will tackle next Tuesday). We also discuss Payton Kirkland setting up his third Ohio State visit and break down what the Florida offensive lineman brings to the gridiron. Want the latest scoops and news on the Buckeyes? Buckeyes 6 over scholarship limit | What happens from here?
Spring ball is just around the corner and Ohio State is currently six over the limit of 85 scholarships. That obviously means some guys will be on the move before camp begins in early August. Who might some of those players be? Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to speculate on how Ryan Day might manage this tricky situation with his roster. Also, is the NCAA at fault for counting "super seniors" against the 85 limit, unlike last year? Or is perhaps another group of people at fault? Furthermore, even though the Buckeyes are over the limit now, might they look to the transfer portal to boost the tight end position? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Can Jim Knowles do what no other Ohio State defensive boss has done? Can he go into Louisiana and secure an elite prospect? We know this: If the Buckeyes don't get Bayou State star linebacker Tackett Curtis it won't be due to a lack of effort. 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong is here and updates Ohio State's quest for Curtis in real time during the show. ** Also: * Comparing Carnell Tate and Garrett Wilson at similar stage. * Has Jim Harbaugh's staff shakeup affected Michigan recruiting? * When Luke Montgomery pledges on Feb. 17 what can we expect? * Who wins the Super Bowl? Realistic expectations for Knowles' defense in year one? (Plus answers to more of your questions)
Occasionally we solicit questions for the Bucknuts Morning Five via The Front Row message board. Today is one of those days. What are expectations for new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles in year one in 2022? We start with that one. Also on the docket: * Which players need to step up most for the Buckeyes this season? * What are our best memories of the former Ohio State players who will be playing in the Super Bowl for the Bengals? * What in the world is going on at Michigan? Montgomery in ... but where? | Northern exposed | Joe Cool?
Luke Montgomery is from Findlay, Ohio. Findlay High is actually three miles closer to the college in Ann Arbor than The Ohio State University in Columbus. Our vibe is proximity won't be the determining factor in his college decision. Ohio's top Class of 2023 prospect has announced Feb.17 as his commitment date. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound offensive lineman boasts a who's who of finalists: Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Clemson and Oklahoma. The Top247 ranks Montgomery as the No. 1 recruit in the state of Ohio. He is tabbed as the country's No. 6 offensive tackle and No. 62 prospect overall per the 247Sports Composite. Duane Long is here to put all of that in context before commenting on possible Ohio State standouts, Jim Harbaugh's goofy offseason and who wins the Super Bowl. What can be expected from Buckeyes' two transfers: McCalister, Trayanum?
We have talked a lot about Ohio State's new assistant coaches and also the 2022 recruiting class. But what about the two players who transferred to OSU this offseason: safety Tanner McCalister and linebacker DeaMonte Trayanum? What can fans expect out of them during the 2022 season? Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * Josh Gattis leaving Michigan to become the offensive coordinator of the Miami Hurricanes. This means the Wolverines will now be replacing both coordinators. What does this say about Jim Harbaugh, if anything? * Speaking of OSU's new coaches, what stood out to Patrick when we met with them last week? Does he think Jim Knowles can turn around the Buckeyes' defense immediately? * Ohio State's men's basketball team looked very good in picking up a win over Maryland on Sunday.
