Hoda Afshar was already set to have a major year before she was approached by the Art Gallery of NSW to create a new exhibition. In 2023, the Iranian-born, Melbourne-based artist has had showings at this year’s Sharjah Biennial in February, as well as the Tarrawarra Biennial and the Museum of Contemporary Art in June. The Melbourne-based photographer is known for her sensitive political images, including ones she took on Manus Island in 2018 and a series shot in Iran where she grapples with her connection to, and disconnect from, her home country. Miami-born chef Danielle Alvarez made a name for herself Down Under as the founding head chef of Sydney farm-to-table restaurant Fred's. Though new to the city, she quickly gained a legion of followers for her rustic, no-fuss, produce-forward cooking, honed at Alice Waters’s Californian classic Chez Panisse. Joe Kitsana may be the hardest working man in hospitality. Kitsana has been on the Sydney hospo scene for more than 20 years, notably at Longrain as well as neighbourhood mainstays Sailors Thai and Phamish. In June 2016, he took over the lease of neighbourhood cafe Kings Lane Sandwiches, eventually turning it into a Thai restaurant that he ran entirely on his own.
