Ep 466Dr Kameel Khan, Founder of Project Remake - The Judge Giving Ex-Offenders a 2nd Chance
Jeannette is joined by Dr Kameel Khan,a lawyer, judge, and founder of Project Remake, about his inspiring journey from Trinidad to the UK and his commitment to social justice. Kameel shares his early influences, including the civil unrest in Trinidad and the impact of his parents' belief in education. He also discusses his experiences defending death row inmates and the complexities of the justice system, highlighting the importance of understanding the human stories behind offenders. KEY TAKEAWAYS The journey into law and social justice was significantly influenced by early education and the support of family, highlighting the role of encouragement and vision in shaping one's future. Understanding the personal stories and backgrounds of offenders is crucial. They are not just statistics; they are individuals with families and potential who deserve a second chance. Project Remake, which started at Stanford University, focuses on entrepreneurship training for formerly incarcerated individuals, achieving a remarkable 6% reoffending rate compared to the national average of 54%. The financial burden of incarceration is significant, with costs reaching £50,000 per year per inmate. Investing in rehabilitation and employment opportunities for ex-offenders can lead to better societal outcomes and reduced costs. BEST MOMENTS "We have had 120 graduates, and we have had a 6% reoffending rate... The national average is near 54% in the first year and 70% in the second year." "We want to live in a society that doesn't write people off, that gives people a second chance." "How do we break that sort of aspect of judgment around this whole topic? Because I think that's a really big blocker as well, the perception." "It's very interesting... finding your voice is a huge thing... realising you could only be you, everyone else is taken." Ep 465Giving Back With Purpose And Impact
Jeannette discusses the importance of giving back with impact and purpose, especially during the end-of-year season. She stresses that everyone, regardless of their role—be it a solopreneur, student, or corporate leader—can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. She also highlights various ways to contribute, beyond just financial donations, such as volunteering time, mentoring, and supporting local or international initiatives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Giving back is essential not only for helping others but also for personal growth and fostering a sense of community. It allows individuals and businesses to align their values with meaningful actions. Contributions don't have to be financial. Time, knowledge, and experience can be just as valuable. Mentoring, volunteering, and sharing expertise are effective ways to make a difference. Just as individuals set financial or career goals, it's important to establish giving goals. Reflecting on how to help others can lead to a more fulfilling and impactful life. In a business context, involving teams in charitable activities can enhance camaraderie and morale. Organising fundraising events or giving team members time off to volunteer can strengthen bonds and create a positive work environment. BEST MOMENTS "It's so important that we do [give back], especially at this time of year, to think about how you can help other people in a meaningful way with impact." "When you actually do give back and support other people, you grow as a person through that process." "Every single one of us can actually give back in a meaningful way." "It doesn't all have to cost money... your time is the most precious thing that you have." Jeannette is joined by Ollie Thorn, a public speaker, coach, and motivational mentor, to discuss his extraordinary journey following a life-altering motorcycle accident. At just 23 years old, Ollie faced the unimaginable after breaking over 40 bones and suffering a spinal cord injury. He shares the harrowing details of his recovery, the emotional challenges he encountered, and how he ultimately transformed his adversity into a powerful purpose. Ollie also discusses the importance of resilience, gratitude, and the need for society to shift its perception of disability KEY TAKEAWAYS The journey through a life-altering accident highlights the importance of resilience. Despite facing significant challenges, the ability to keep moving forward and finding purpose is crucial. After experiencing a traumatic event, it's essential to rediscover one's identity. Transitioning from a physically active life to living with a disability requires a shift in perspective and the exploration of new passions, such as adaptive sports. Acknowledging the fragility of life fosters a sense of gratitude. Embracing the small joys and opportunities in life can lead to a more fulfilling existence, even after significant setbacks. The importance of representation and role models in the disability community is emphasised. By sharing experiences and successes, individuals can help change societal perceptions and inspire others facing similar challenges. BEST MOMENTS "I suppose being a young man, I always thought it was never going to happen to me like everyone does. But that loss of identity... my identity was wrapped up in my physicality." "When someone says, 'You're never going to walk again,' it’s so difficult to try and compute the seriousness and the vastness of that." "I realised that I'm not gonna be able to play sport with my mates again. I'm not gonna be able to do things that I've taken for granted." "It's almost seeing the world differently, right? Ep 463Managing Risk - Boring or Essential?
Jeannette looks at the critical topic of risk management in business. Drawing from her extensive experience as a corporate CEO and entrepreneur, she emphasises the importance of having the right tools to navigate risks, regardless of one's appetite for risk. Jeannette outlines four essential tools for managing risk: creating a profit and loss account, developing a risk and opportunities schedule, crafting investment cases, and maintaining a risk register. She encourages you to embrace risk as a natural part of business and to approach it in a structured manner, ensuring you are prepared for both challenges and opportunities. KEY TAKEAWAYS Regardless of whether you are risk-averse or a risk-taker, managing risk is essential in business and life. It's important to have the right tools to make informed judgments about risk. Creating a profit and loss account is crucial for forecasting business performance. It should incorporate potential risks and opportunities, allowing for adjustments as the year progresses. Maintaining a risk and opportunity schedule helps identify potential risks and opportunities that may not be certain enough to include in the profit and loss account. This proactive approach allows for better preparedness when these factors materialise. When considering investments, it's vital to develop a detailed investment case that includes an analysis of associated risks and opportunities. This is especially important for significant investments that require board approval. BEST MOMENTS "Regardless of whether you have an appetite for risk, you need to have the right tools in place to make judgments when it comes to risk." "When you walk out of the door in the morning, there's risk that you might actually be run over by a bus. Let's hope not. But there is always a risk." "A risk and opportunity schedule allows you to have that visibility up front, equipping you to deal with them as they come up." "If you don't risk anything, you risk everything, right? Because otherwise, you're in your comfort zone, you're not pushing forward." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Jeannette is joined by Ron Rosenblum, the co-founder and CEO of Canvas Offices, who shares his unique journey from the music industry to the world of real estate and serviced office spaces. He discusses the evolution of his business, which began in 2013 with a focus on creating bespoke office environments that foster creativity and collaboration. Ron also talks about the importance of listening to clients and personalising services to enhance their experience. The conversation also delves into the challenges faced during the pandemic, the changing landscape of work, and the significance of building a strong company culture. KEY TAKEAWAYS The transition from the music industry to real estate highlights the importance of being open to new opportunities and adapting to changing circumstances. The ability to pivot and find new paths can lead to unexpected success. Creating a personalised and welcoming environment for clients is crucial. By listening to their needs and allowing them to contribute to the creation of their workspace, businesses can foster loyalty and satisfaction. Working with family members or close partners can be beneficial when there is a foundation of trust. This trust allows for smoother collaboration and decision-making, which is essential for business success. The pandemic has shifted the perception of office spaces from mere work environments to social and collaborative hubs. Businesses must create spaces that balance privacy and community to meet the evolving needs of employees. BEST MOMENTS "The true love of what we do is to host people, to welcome people, and to let them feel at home really more than anything else." "If you want people to feel at home, you need to let them be part of its creation." Ep 461Wearing Multiple Hats in Your Small Business
Jeannette addresses the challenges faced by small business owners, particularly those just starting out or transitioning from the corporate world. She shares eight key steps that can help entrepreneurs navigate the early stages of their business journey, emphasising the importance of having a clear plan, serving existing clients, leveraging resources, and utilising technology. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's crucial for small business owners to create a high-level plan outlining their goals, target audience, and financial expectations. This helps in navigating the early stages of business and reduces surprises. Prioritise serving your current clients exceptionally well, as their satisfaction can lead to referrals and positive word-of-mouth, which is vital for business growth, especially in the early days. Learn to use leverage effectively by outsourcing tasks that can free up your time. This allows you to focus on core business activities and growth rather than getting bogged down by administrative duties. Take advantage of affordable technology tools, like scheduling software, to streamline operations and improve efficiency. This can help you manage your time better and reduce manual tasks. BEST MOMENTS "If you're a small business owner, as an entrepreneur, have a plan, get it out of your head and down on paper." "You must serve your existing clients. Even if you only have one client, you must serve them well." "Learn the power of leverage; how can you get the maximum output when you are strapped for cash?" "Your first employee should be, in my opinion, a virtual assistant." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 460Jennifer Grace, Miami’s Number 1 Life Coach & TEDx Speaker - Mindfulness & Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
Jeannette is joined by the fabulous Jennifer Grace to discuss her inspiring journey from a vibrant childhood filled with dance to becoming Miami's number one life coach, motivational speaker, and author. Jennifer talks about her unique approach to coaching, emphasising the importance of helping others recognise their own potential while navigating challenges like imposter syndrome. She also reflects on her experiences working with celebrities and female entrepreneurs, highlighting the different dynamics they face. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mindset is about choosing how to view situations, whether from a limited or growth perspective. Neutralising events allows individuals to detach from emotional responses and choose a more empowering viewpoint. Imposter syndrome affects people across all demographics, regardless of success. Normalising it and helping individuals recognise their achievements can shift their perspective and reduce its impact. It's essential to celebrate milestones and successes, no matter how small. This practice helps individuals appreciate their journey and prevents them from constantly moving the goalposts without acknowledging their accomplishments. The launch of a hybrid publishing company addresses the challenges authors face in traditional publishing. This model offers a transparent, supportive alternative that allows authors to retain a larger share of their profits while receiving necessary guidance and resources. BEST MOMENTS "I think the first thing I always try to do is normalise imposter syndrome, making people feel like, okay, there's not something wrong with me because I'm feeling this way." "The beauty is we get to choose. Are you going to have a limited mindset or a growth mindset?" "I think part of retreat needs to celebrate and have fun. People take sometimes this work way too seriously." "I had a complete breakdown with my own child... Ep 459Unlocking Potential: A Deep Dive into Human Behaviour with Allan Kleynhans - Part 2
Jeannette is joined by Allan Kleynhans, an incredible coach, motivational speaker and Tony Robbins trainer, for the second in a two-part conversation - this time discussing the critical topic of employee engagement and the emerging trend of "quiet quitting." They discuss the importance of fostering a motivated and committed workforce, emphasising that disengaged employees can be detrimental to both individual and organisational success. The conversation highlights effective strategies for addressing disengagement, including the significance of hiring the right people and creating a supportive work environment. KEY TAKEAWAYS Engaged teams and employees are crucial for achieving business success. Disengagement, often exemplified by "quiet quitting," can be detrimental to both individuals and organisations. The interview process should focus on finding candidates with the right attitude rather than just skills. Questions about personal interests, such as the last five books read, can reveal a candidate's mindset and potential fit within the company culture. Companies that foster emotional investment and psychological safety among employees tend to thrive. Encouraging open communication and sharing personal challenges can enhance team dynamics and overall morale. Individuals must prioritise their well-being to bring their best selves to work. Engaging in practices like meditation, exercise, and personal reflection can help maintain energy levels and prevent burnout. BEST MOMENTS "When you've got an engaged team... that's when you really can get motivated and get results." "You can't train attitude. It's impossible. You can hire attitude, but you can train skill." "If you don't like where you are right now, you have to ask yourself what decisions you made a year ago." Ep 458Unlocking Potential: A Deep Dive into Human Behaviour with Allan Kleynhans - Part 1
Jeannette is joined for the first in a two-part conversation, by Allan Kleynhans, for a thought-provoking discussion on human behaviour and personal development. With over 36 years of studying the human condition, Allan shares insights on unlocking potential, the importance of self-awareness, and the power of conscious decision-making. They explore the significance of creating a calm and present mindset, especially in today's fast-paced world filled with distractions, and examine the challenges of communication, the necessity of understanding oneself, and the value of nurturing relationships. KEY TAKEAWAYS Becoming aware of one's thoughts and feelings is crucial for personal growth. By actively listening to oneself and questioning the origins of thoughts, individuals can make more conscious decisions and break free from negative thought patterns. Taking time for silence and self-reflection is essential for mental clarity and emotional well-being. Establishing a routine that includes quiet time can lead to greater calmness, focus, and a deeper understanding of one's purpose. Effective communication is vital for building relationships and achieving goals. Listening to understand, rather than just to respond, fosters better connections and ensures that messages are conveyed clearly. Engaging with literature enhances communication skills and broadens perspectives. Reading not only improves vocabulary and grammar but also stimulates imagination and critical thinking. BEST MOMENTS "The thing I'm most proud of is the fact that I've been studying for 36 years... Why do we suffer? Why do we spend so much time in pain?" "When you become conscious about that process in your mind, you can start to trace those thought processes back." "Communication is the response you get." "It's really just a case of recognising that actually there's nowhere to be other than this moment right now." Ep 457COP29 Insights: How Adventure Sports Inspire a New Generation of Environmentalists
Jeannette is joined by Amber Nuttall and Alistair Gosling all the way from COP29 in Azerbaijan to discuss their journey from launching the Extreme Sports channel to evolving their business into a platform focused on adventure, sustainability, and community engagement. Alistair shares insights on the entrepreneurial spirit driving change in the environmental sector, while Amber highlights the importance of amplifying diverse voices at COP29. KEY TAKEAWAYS The current emphasis is on environmental sustainability, with a strong belief that everyone can contribute to positive change. The goal is to inspire a broad audience to take action, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the need for "8 billion imperfect environmentalists." At COP29, the primary focus is on finance and the need for substantial investment in sustainability initiatives. The discussions aim to encourage governments to make impactful decisions that will shape the future of environmental efforts. There is a growing trend of entrepreneurs and innovative companies stepping up to address environmental challenges. Examples include sustainable brands gaining traction and initiatives like the Earthshot Prize recognising impactful organisations. We should encourage individuals and organisations to embrace bravery, boldness, and brilliance in their efforts to create a sustainable future, while also recognising the need for balance in addressing both climate and technological advancements. BEST MOMENTS "We inspired a good few million people around the world to go and get active, drive health, fitness, well-being through getting into adventure and extreme sports." "We need 8 billion imperfect environmentalists in the world today. We don't need a handful of perfect ones." "What I'm loving seeing is the entrepreneurial spirit shining through where entrepreneurs are taking advantage and really drilling into opportunities to change the dial." "It's very clear. It's finance. It's all about finance this year... we can only hope that our governments come together and make the right decisions around that." Ep 456Alice Morrison, TV Presenter & Intrepid Adventurer - Throwing Away Societal Norms to Be Her Authentic Self
Jeannette is joined by TV presenter and adventurer, Alice Morrison, who shares her remarkable journey from a conventional career as a chief executive to embarking on thrilling adventures, including cycling across Africa and exploring the hidden histories of the Nabataean civilisation in her new TV series, "Arabian Adventures." Jeannette and Alice explore the catalysts for change in Alice's life, her experiences with self-discovery, and the importance of living authentically KEY TAKEAWAYS Life can take unexpected turns, and it's essential to adapt and find new paths. The journey from a conventional career to adventurous pursuits can lead to personal growth and fulfilment. Engaging in physically challenging activities can help reset your mindset, allowing you to focus on the present moment rather than getting lost in worries about the future. It's crucial to understand that your identity is not defined by societal expectations or roles. Embracing your true self and making choices that align with your values is more important than seeking external validation. Negative feedback is a part of life, but it's essential to not let it deter you. Understanding that others' opinions are often reflections of their own experiences can help you maintain your confidence and focus on your goals. BEST MOMENTS "I think really the physical side of it, in a way, is a servant to the exploration side of it." "It's a really interesting time for you to be doing this because of... creating a diverse, equitable part of the world, which is coming from quite a dark place." "What someone else thinks of you is none of your business." "If you keep walking, you'll get to your destination. And it's the same in life." Ep 455Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking
Jeannette tackles the often daunting topic of public speaking, exploring the common fears and blockers that many individuals face when it comes to sharing their message with the world, and emphasising the importance of mindset and preparation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your mindset is crucial when it comes to public speaking. Believing in your ability to deliver a message can significantly impact your performance. Remember the quote: "Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both usually right." Being organised and well-prepared is essential. This includes knowing your topic, practicing your speech, and ensuring all technical aspects (like audio and slides) are in order before you take the stage. Consistent practice helps build confidence. It's important to rehearse your speech multiple times, ideally in front of a mirror or with a trusted friend, to become comfortable with the material and delivery. Perfection is not the goal; being authentic and human can resonate more with your audience. Accept that nerves are normal and can be channeled positively to enhance your delivery. BEST MOMENTS "When you actually do put yourself out to the world and you have a message to share, you can do so much good." "Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both usually right." "If you have a message to share with the world, then there is no better way to do that than to actually put yourself out there." "Recognise the fact you stood up there on a stage, you delivered a message, that in itself is a huge achievement." "Feedback is the breakfast of champions. That's how we improve. It's how we grow." Ep 454Suzy Welch - Wife of the Late Great Jack Welch on Resilience, Reinvention & Becoming You
Jeannette talks to the marvellous Suzy Welch, a renowned professor of management at NYU School of Business and a celebrated author, to delve into the complexities of personal and professional reinvention. Suzy shares her unique journey from a creative upbringing in a family of artists to her successful career in business journalism and consulting, highlighting the pivotal moments that shaped her path. She also candidly discusses the challenges of resilience, particularly in the face of loss, and emphasises the importance of forgiveness as a crucial step towards recovery KEY TAKEAWAYS Life often involves unexpected twists and turns, and what may seem like survival in the moment can later be recognised as a process of reinvention and growth. Resilience is not about having grit when you're down; it's about forgiveness—both of yourself and others. True resilience comes from a place of strength, and it requires inner work to move past feelings of weakness and shame. Open and honest communication is crucial in both personal and professional relationships. Speaking the truth, even when it's difficult, fosters respect and can lead to stronger connections. Identifying your values, aptitudes, and interests is essential for discovering your purpose. The intersection of these elements can guide you toward a fulfilling life and help you make decisions that align with your true self. BEST MOMENTS "I think there's no straight lines in most people's lives. I grew up in a family... business was just not part of our life at all." "Resilience is something we have when we're strong. We're at the top of our game... but when you're on your back, all you feel is weak." "It's an act of respect and love to tell the truth. Everyone always prefers the hard truth to a soft lie." "I had to learn that when you're really suffering and really weak, the only way you can get resilience in yourself is to start with a step that I think is just always left out, which is forgiveness." Ep 453How To Lead With Authority And Empathy
Jeannette talks about the essential balance of leading with both authority and empathy, emphasising the importance of creating a positive work environment where teams feel engaged and motivated to drive business results. Jeannette uses the metaphor of a helicopter to illustrate the need for leaders to navigate between strategic oversight and hands-on involvement. KEY TAKEAWAYS Effective leadership requires a combination of authority and empathy. Leaders should be able to make strategic decisions while also being approachable and understanding of their team's needs. Authority comes from having the necessary experience, knowledge, and clarity of purpose. Leaders should ensure their teams understand their roles and responsibilities, and set clear objectives and KPIs to measure success. Authentic leadership involves showing vulnerability and being open about not having all the answers. Sharing personal experiences can foster a more relatable and empathetic leadership style. Understanding and connecting with team members on an emotional level is crucial. Leaders should seek feedback to improve their emotional intelligence and ensure they are listening and responding to their team's needs. BEST MOMENTS "As a leader, you want to get the most out of your teams. You want them to feel happy to come to work, engage with what you're doing, drive the results of the business." "Being vulnerable also means showing a part of yourself that shows you're human. That really encourages the empathy side of things." "When you lead with authority, you do not shy away from decisions. You make the decisions." "Thinking the best of someone first, not thinking the worst, is empathetic. You're giving people a chance." Ep 452Chasing Dreams vs. Attracting Opportunities - with Mike “C-Roc” Ciorrocco
Jeannette talks to Mike “C-Roc” Ciorrocco, founder of That1 Agency and host of the podcast What Are You Made Of. Mike shares his inspiring journey from a challenging childhood marked by brokenness and adversity to becoming a successful entrepreneur with a massive social media following. He also discusses the importance of networking, self-belief, and the power of intention in achieving success KEY TAKEAWAYS Setting a clear intention in life directs your attention towards achieving your goals. By focusing on positive outcomes, you can create a reality that aligns with your aspirations. Building a strong network is crucial for success. Engaging with others and forming genuine connections can lead to opportunities and collaborations that enhance personal and professional growth. Sharing personal stories and experiences, including struggles and setbacks, can foster deeper connections with others and inspire them to overcome their own challenges. Practicing gratitude and being present in the moment can shift your focus from what you lack to appreciating what you have, leading to a more fulfilling life. BEST MOMENTS "If you're telling yourself that you have to be this way, which is a negative thing, and then you live it out, you probably could do it the other way too." "When things happen in your life, you are causing and creating those things with your thoughts, words, actions, emotions, the people you keep around you." "I think sometimes we push too much. Ep 451Quit Your Job And Become Your Own Boss
Jeannette shares her insights on the journey of quitting a corporate job to become your own boss. Drawing from her extensive experience as a CEO in the global travel industry, she discusses the allure and challenges of entrepreneurship, and outlines three approaches to making the leap: having a clear plan, responding to unexpected circumstances, or starting a side hustle KEY TAKEAWAYS There are three main ways to transition from a corporate job to entrepreneurship: having a clear plan with a deadline, responding to unexpected circumstances like redundancy, or starting a side hustle to test the waters. Before making the leap, assess your personal finances to ensure you have enough savings to cover your essential expenses for at least six months. This will allow you to focus on building your business without the stress of immediate financial pressure. Surround yourself with supportive individuals, including mentors or coaches who have experience in entrepreneurship. Their guidance can be invaluable during challenging times. Entrepreneurship involves risks and potential failures. It's crucial to develop a thick skin and be prepared for setbacks, as they are a natural part of the journey. BEST MOMENTS "It sounds incredibly glamorous to quit your job, become your own boss, but it isn’t for everyone." "You are not going to be making profit normally straight away. If you are, I mean, amazing, fantastic. But be prepared for that." "You need to make sure that you’ve got something there, you’ve got a bit of a rainy day fund in the event that it takes a while for this business to get off the ground." "Entrepreneurs fail all the time. They take risks, and setting up your own business involves taking risks." "If this isn’t a dream that you’ve had to leave your job and become your own boss, give it a go." Ep 450Time to Balance the Board by Accelerating Change on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
This episode incorporates the inspiring speech that Jeannette delivered as a key note at the recent Balance the Board annual conference in London, along with insights from Holly Addison Co-Founder of Balance the Board and interviews with Paul Holbrook Founder of Diary Detox, Juliett Cattermole Chief People Officer at David Lloyd Leisure and Ann-marie Murphy Group Chief People Officer at SSP Group. It's all about focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion to accelerate change and make the world of business a better place with opportunities for all. This combined with Jeannette's framework of Brave Bold Brilliant makes for an inspiring listen. Balance the Board was created by two of the founders of Plan B Mentoring – a not-for -profit mentoring platform launched in 2017 to help women progress to senior leadership and board level. Its aim was simple; to encourage women to believe in themselves and their ability to contribute at the most senior levels, to the success of their organisations, through advice and support from objective mentors. Balance the Board goes beyond gender diversity, supporting and embracing all under-represented communities, encouraging greater balance on boards and championing more inclusive cultures. Today, Balance the Board runs a number of mentoring programs, hosts regular events and webinars with the mission to equip talented individuals from all dimensions of diversity to be the best they can be, through empowerment, learning and challenge, by creating a network that will mentor and support the next generation of inclusive leaders. KEY TAKEAWAYS The framework emphasises the importance of self-leadership (brave), leading the business with clarity and purpose (bold), and fostering strong, inclusive teams (brilliant) to drive success and create a positive impact. Achieving true inclusion requires more than good intentions; it demands action, commitment, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. Organisations should focus on creating diverse teams that reflect the communities they serve. Being authentic and bringing your full self to work is crucial for effective leadership. This authenticity helps in building diverse and inclusive teams where everyone feels valued and empowered. Continuous training and open, honest conversations about diversity and inclusion are essential for fostering a culture of belonging. Organisations should not rely solely on initiatives but engage in meaningful dialogue to address DEI challenges. BEST MOMENTS "It's through using my Brave Bold Brilliant framework that helps these businesses scale up and be the best in the industry." "I think a lot of organisations try and create change programs, but it should be more about hiring the right people who have love at their core." "We are setting up inclusion resource groups, which have been hugely successful already for us." "It's about showing people earlier on in their career that this is possible and helping them again to have the confidence to develop their aspirations." "It is by being brave and bold that you're going to unlock your brilliant." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 449Navigating Your First Exec Board Position With Ease
Jeannette shares invaluable insights for those stepping into their first board position or aspiring to do so in the near future. Drawing from personal experiences as a former CEO and executive director, she discusses the importance of adopting a dual perspective—managing both individual responsibilities and the broader organisational strategy. KEY TAKEAWAYS As a board member, you must balance running your specific area of the business while also contributing to the overall strategy and growth of the organization. This requires a shift in perspective to a more holistic view. Transitioning to an executive role involves engaging with a different set of stakeholders, including board members, external investors, and regulatory bodies. Understanding these relationships is crucial for effective networking and representation. Directors have legal obligations and must ensure proper governance practices are in place. This includes managing risks and ensuring that all stakeholders are fairly represented. Successful executive leadership involves balancing purpose, profit, people, and planet. This holistic approach is essential for aligning business strategies with sustainability and social responsibility, particularly in the context of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives. BEST MOMENTS "When you become a board member, it's really important to remember that you almost start to wear two hats." "Governance becomes a much bigger piece, that robustness, that clarity, essentially ensuring that all those stakeholders are fairly represented." "The four P's—purpose, profit, people, and planet—working in harmony is really what makes a great business." "These big corporate roles are stressful. Executive burnout and stress come partly with the territory." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Embracing change and being open to new opportunities can lead to unexpected and rewarding paths. Building trust is crucial in leadership roles. Being entrusted with significant responsibilities, such as managing a yacht, can be a powerful motivator for personal growth and accountability. Drawing inspiration from Hal Elrod's book, she shares a personalised morning routine encapsulated in the acronym SAVERS: Silence, Affirmations, Visualisation, Exercise, Reading, and Scribing. KEY TAKEAWAYS How you start your morning sets the tone for the entire day, influencing your energy, mindset, and overall results. SAVERS Acronym: A structured morning routine can be built around the acronym SAVERS, which stands for Silence, Affirmations, Visualisation, Exercise, Reading, and Scribing. Each component contributes to personal growth and well-being. It's essential to find a morning routine that works for you personally, as everyone's energy levels and preferences differ. Ep 445Feedback Is The Breakfast of Champions
Jeannette discusses the essential skills of receiving and giving feedback, emphasising its importance in personal and professional growth. She offers twelve practical tips—six for effectively receiving feedback and six for delivering it constructively. Listeners are encouraged to actively listen, process feedback, and take actionable steps to improve, while also learning how to prepare, choose the right environment, and support others when giving feedback KEY TAKEAWAYS Receiving and giving feedback is a valuable process that can enhance personal and professional growth, even if it feels uncomfortable at times. Six Steps to Receive Feedback: Listen: Absorb what is being said without jumping to defensiveness. Process: Reflect on the feedback and identify any recurring themes. Take Action: Decide how to respond to the feedback constructively. Review Progress: Monitor changes and improvements based on the feedback. Seek Follow-Up Feedback: Proactively ask for additional feedback to gauge progress. Continuous Refinement: Engage in ongoing personal development based on the feedback received. Prepare thoroughly before giving feedback, considering the desired outcome and the context in which the feedback will be delivered. Ensure that feedback is given in a quiet, distraction-free setting where the recipient can focus and respond appropriately. After giving feedback, check in with the individual to see how they are processing it and offer support as needed, fostering a constructive dialogue BEST MOMENTS "Feedback is the breakfast of champions and it should be received in silence." "When you have a more of a maturity about receiving and giving feedback, it can honestly be super valuable in terms of how you come across." "The great thing about feedback is you decide what to do with it." "Don't assume a response. You don't know how the person will respond to what you have to say and you may get some surprises." "We want to help. We're giving feedback because we care both about ourselves, but about the other person." Ep 442From Government to Global Summit: Julia Simpson's Journey as CEO of WTTC
Jeannette talks to Julia Simpson, the president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Julia shares her unique journey to her current role, highlighting her extensive experience in both government and the corporate sector, including her time as an advisor to former Prime Minister Tony Blair. They also talk about the importance of understanding the interplay between government and business, especially in the volatile travel and tourism industry. Julia discusses the WTTC's significant impact on the global economy, representing one in ten jobs worldwide, and emphasises the need for a unified voice for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the sector. Together with Finn Partners, WTTC is launching in October a community for the global SME market called Together in Travel. As the voice of the global travel private sector WTTC wants to make sure the voice of the SME is heard loud and clear. This will be a dynamic and free-to-subscribe community with lots of useful content and will focus on empowering these businesses by facilitating meaningful connections, providing valuable insights, and offering tailored learning programs to help them thrive in a competitive market. Together in Travel Pre-registration form: https://form.typeform.com/to/eVF3u89X KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience is crucial in both government and corporate sectors, as leaders often face numerous challenges and setbacks. Embracing failures and learning from them can lead to stronger leadership. Understanding the dynamics between government and the private sector is essential for effective advocacy in travel and tourism. Leaders must navigate the differing timeframes and priorities of both sectors to create meaningful partnerships. The travel and tourism industry must leverage data and AI to enhance operations and customer experiences. Leaders should take ownership of AI initiatives to drive innovation and efficiency within their organisations. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the travel and tourism sector, representing 80% of the industry. Initiatives like "Together in Travel" aim to amplify their voices and provide resources for growth and resilience. As the travel and tourism sector grows, it is essential to prioritise sustainability and responsible growth. Leaders should advocate for practices that protect the environment and support local communities, ensuring a positive impact on society. BEST MOMENTS "You have to make your luck, you have to push a lot of doors, but then suddenly one will flip open and it's not always the one you're expecting." "I think one of my expertise is, if you like, is dealing with crisis... you never quite know how you're going to deal with crisis until you're in it for the first time." "Travel and tourism represents one in 10 jobs that are created on this planet... we're also one of the biggest employers of women." "It's really important that the big boys and girls really support that, and it's also where a lot of the young innovations are coming from." Ep 441The Formula For Success To Smash Your Results
Jeannette shares a powerful formula for success that applies to various aspects of life, including business, career, and personal relationships. The formula consists of three key components: belief, purpose, and action, which together lead to meaningful results. KEY TAKEAWAYS Success is achieved through the formula: Belief + Purpose + Action = Results. Each component is essential for achieving desired outcomes in business and personal life. Self-belief is crucial. If you don't believe in yourself and your capabilities, it will be challenging for others to believe in you. Regularly remind yourself of your achievements to strengthen your self-belief. Having a clear purpose and understanding your "why" is vital for staying on track. Take time to reflect on your goals and the legacy you want to leave, as this clarity will guide your actions. Massive action is necessary to achieve results. Incremental improvements and consistent efforts, even if they don't always lead to immediate results, contribute to long-term success. Regularly evaluate your belief, purpose, and actions. If you're not achieving the results you want, check if your belief is strong enough, if your purpose is clear, and if you're taking the right actions aligned with your goals BEST MOMENTS "Belief plus purpose plus action equals results. Let me say it again. Belief plus purpose plus action equals results." "If we don't believe in ourselves, if we don't believe in what we're doing, then how can anyone else believe in you?" "Having a clear vision for where you wanna go, knowing your reason why, is absolutely critical because it will keep you on track." "There is no point in playing small in this life. Live a life that you have got the capability to do, not less." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 440From The Top CEOs In The World - How To Build A Sustainable Global Brand
Jeannette presents a special montage episode featuring insights from four remarkable CEOs leading multi-billion dollar businesses. Listeners will hear from Johan Lundgren, Group CEO of EasyJet, who discusses his rapid ascent in leadership and the importance of diversity and inclusion within his organisation. The episode also includes perspectives from Duncan O'Rourke, CEO of Accor, who shares his journey through the luxury hotel sector and the evolving definition of luxury in today's market. Additionally, Barbara Muckerman, former CEO of Silversea Cruises and CEO of Kempinski Hotels, and Oriele Frank, co-founder of Elemis, contribute their experiences and insights on brand building and sustainability KEY TAKEAWAYS Effective leadership during challenging times, such as a pandemic, involves breaking down overwhelming situations into manageable parts. Staying focused on outcomes and maintaining a positive demeanour can help guide teams through adversity. Authenticity is crucial for successful leadership. Being true to oneself and leading in a way that aligns with personal values fosters trust and engagement within teams. The cultural differences between running businesses in Sweden and the UK are discussed, noting that Scandinavian leadership often emphasises consensus and early adoption of digitalisation, which can influence decision-making processes. The journey of building a brand or business involves constant evolution and adaptation. Embracing change, learning from experiences, and being open to new ideas are essential for long-term success and sustainability. BEST MOMENTS "If you can let everybody be at their best level, if you can get everybody to express themselves in the most natural way, that ultimately must be better." "Luxury is limited by definition. Luxury is limited. It's personalised. And it's changed fundamentally from 10 years ago to what is luxury now." "I never thought that 10 men in the boardroom is equal as bad as 10 women in the boardroom." "Profit is not a dirty word. If we don't make profit, we don't have a business and we don't have people employed." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 439Your Network Is Your Net Worth - How To Build A Thriving Network
Jeannette addresses the critical importance of networking and how it can significantly impact both personal and professional growth. She shares ten actionable tips for building a thriving network, highlighting the need for a mindset shift, intentionality, and the value of nurturing relationships. KEY TAKEAWAYS Approach networking with intention. Set aside dedicated time in your calendar for networking activities, whether it's attending events or connecting with people on platforms like LinkedIn. Focus on how you can help others in your network rather than what you can gain from them. This principle fosters genuine relationships and encourages reciprocity. Establish specific networking goals and create a plan to achieve them. This could include attending events, reaching out to potential leads, or increasing your social media presence. Regularly assess your networking efforts to identify what works and what doesn’t. Adjust your strategies based on your experiences to enhance your networking effectiveness over time. BEST MOMENTS "Your network is your net worth. It's all about who you know in this world." "Be intentional with your networking. Don't leave this just to chance." "Lead with value. Always think about how you can help the other person first." "Set yourself some goals. What gets measured gets done." "Review, tweak, refine. This will lead to exciting opportunities." In your first leadership role, take the time to listen and understand the dynamics of your team and organisation before jumping into action. This will help you avoid missing critical insights. Ep 435Burnout Danger Of Leading On Empty
Jeannette talks about the topic of leadership burnout, drawing from personal experiences as a corporate CEO and entrepreneur. She highlights the prevalence of burnout among ambitious individuals and the detrimental effects it can have on both individuals and organisations KEY TAKEAWAYS It is crucial to be aware of the signs of burnout, such as feelings of exhaustion, disengagement, and reduced efficiency. Taking time for yourself to regroup, whether for an extended period or short breaks, can help release stress and prevent burnout. Reflect on your leadership style and effectiveness, ensuring you are focusing on the right things and not overloading yourself. Ensure you have the right people in the right positions, empower your team, delegate effectively, and provide support for success. Surround yourself with supportive individuals with whom you can discuss your feelings and challenges, seeking guidance and encouragement to navigate potential burnout. BEST MOMENTS "35% of employees were actually having difficulties maintaining a healthy work-life balance and were suffering with extreme stress, pressure, not feeling great." "The most successful leaders are those that can role model resilience and vulnerability together, because those two elements will help with this aspect of burnout." "Life is too short to be anything but happy. So if you're worried about any of this in terms of your mental health, your well-being, then, as I say, more than happy to have a conversation." Ep 429Are You Overworking Your Teams? 4 Day vs 6 Day Working Week
Jeannette talks about the debate surrounding the optimal working week schedule, comparing the recent introduction of a six-day working week in Greece to the trend of trialling four-day working weeks in various countries. Jeannette explores the reasons behind Greece's decision to implement a six-day working week, citing economic challenges and ambitions for increased productivity. KEY TAKEAWAYS The debate between a four-day working week and a six-day working week is a hot topic globally, with different countries and companies experimenting with various schedules. Greece recently introduced a voluntary six-day working week, offering a 40% increase in salary for the extra day worked, aiming to boost economic productivity. The introduction of the six-day working week in Greece has sparked controversy, with concerns about employee well-being, consultation, and potential impact on productivity. On the other hand, many countries have been trialling four-day working weeks, with some companies making it a permanent change due to benefits like improved work-life balance and productivity gains. BEST MOMENTS "Greece has actually announced that they are introducing a six-day working week which is quite controversial given that this is quite a different approach to a lot of the other countries that we see around the world." "So financially, there is clearly a benefit to the employees that take up the six-day working week." "Some of the benefits of the four-day working week are that it allows for a better life work balance for employees." "Life has changed since COVID, right? And that forced us to work more creatively in a very different way than we ever have done before." Ep 428Alan Curtis MBE, Football Legend - His Journey from the Valleys of South Wales to the Premiership & Windsor Castle
Jeannette is joined by the legend himself, Alan Curtis MBE, former Wales international football player, and current honorary club president of Swansea, to discuss insights into receiving an MBE, his early days in football, experiences at various clubs like Swansea, Leeds, Southampton, and Cardiff, and the changes in football over the years. Alan also reflects on the challenges and highlights of his career, including injuries, club transitions, and the psychological aspects of sports, as well as the life lessons he's taken from the beautiful game, and on into all corners of life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Alan had a stellar football career, playing for various clubs and experiencing the changes in the game over the years. The transition from playing for Leeds to Cardiff was challenging due to the intense rivalry between the two clubs, leading to a mixed reception from fans. The story of Alan's uncle, Roy Paul, winning the FA Cup with Manchester City in 1956 after losing in 1955, showcases the determination and prediction of a victory. The evolution of football tactics and the emphasis on possession in modern football contrast with the more straightforward and aggressive style of play in the past. BEST MOMENTS "I think the players certainly are much more tactically aware as well now... It's much more tactical. It's almost like a game of chess now." "I think everybody, every player goes through a doubt just before they go out... all the self-doubts that he had, and, oh, I've got a little bit of a niggle there now." "I think sometimes I always feel that somebody's looking down and looking after me in key moments... I think that probably would have all disappeared." "I remember the first time I played for Cardiff... I got booed by both sets of supporters. Wow. Talking about character building!" Ep 427Quiet Vacationing - Good or Bad?
Jeannette talks about the concept of "quiet vacationing," a trend that has emerged as a subtle way for individuals to take time off without formally booking annual leave. She explores the pros and cons of quiet vacationing, discussing how it can be a beneficial approach to recharge and maintain work-life balance, but also highlighting the potential drawbacks of not fully disconnecting from work KEY TAKEAWAYS Quiet vacationing is a growing trend where individuals take time off without formally booking annual leave. Pros and cons of quiet vacationing include the ability to recharge and maintain work-life balance, but the risk of not fully recuperating if work continues during the time off. Leaders should ensure clear communication of holiday entitlements, encourage unplugging, monitor workload issues, and prioritise employee wellness. Consistency in allowing time off and adhering to legal obligations is crucial for fostering a healthy work environment. Setting the tone as a leader by practicing what you preach regarding taking breaks and promoting work-life balance is essential for the team's well-being. BEST MOMENTS "Taking that approach can be a great way to just recharge, take a little bit of time, you know, etc." "But the reality is, if you're not taking a break, then you're at risk of burnout, right?" "So be flexible. Very often, people want more flexibility these days." "I think a focus on wellness is absolutely critical for your teams." You become excellent and effective, positive person." "You become the average of the five people you spend most of your time with. So choose wisely." Ep 425Quiet Quitting And What To Do About It
Jeannette discusses the concept of "quiet quitting," where employees disengage and perform only the minimum requirements for their job. She discusses the characteristics and causes of quiet quitting, citing statistics from a Gallup poll on employee engagement, and what we can do about it. KEY TAKEAWAYS Quiet quitting refers to employees who are only doing the bare minimum required for their job, lacking enthusiasm and engagement. Quiet quitting can lead to decreased productivity, poor team dynamics, and ultimately affect the overall success of the business. Factors such as burnout, lack of recognition, unclear expectations, and poor management can contribute to quiet quitting among employees. Implementing an engaging work culture, clarifying expectations, offering fair compensation, and creating an employee engagement strategy can help combat quiet quitting. Leaders should assess their own leadership style and make necessary adjustments to inspire and empower their teams effectively. BEST MOMENTS "Only 10% of employees feel engaged. So that therefore means that a staggering 90% of employees are therefore not engaged." "40% of employees in the UK were found to be experiencing daily stress, 27% reported feeling daily sadness, 20% reported feeling daily anger." "Gen Z's quiet quitting. 47% of Gen Z's said that they were coasting along in their career, and 40% said they're thriving." "Leadership is really around inspiring your teams, providing the vision, the focus, making those difficult investment choices, setting the strategy, and really empowering your teams to excel in whatever their roles are." Jonathan reflects on his humble beginnings in a small Welsh village, the challenges he faced, and the importance of mentors in his life. He shares insights on leadership, teamwork, and motivation, drawing parallels between sports and business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Building strong relationships and understanding people is crucial in both sports and business. Preparation and communication are key elements for success in leadership roles. Motivating a team in challenging situations requires instilling self-belief and maintaining a positive attitude. Teamwork and a common purpose are essential for achieving goals and success. Balancing skill and attitude when selecting team members is important, with attitude often taking precedence. BEST MOMENTS "I think it's always been kind of there in Wales. You know, having moved then up and realising it's very similar to North West and South Wales." "The bloke's attitude has got to be inclusive. He's with us or he's not. If he's not with us, that's going to be an issue for me." "In your business, I'd rather have a hole than a narsel." Ep 4238 Ways to Build a Culture of Collaboration
Jeannette discusses the importance of creating a culture of collaboration within large organisations, outlining eight key ways to build a collaborative culture, ranging from executive support and creating the right environment, to modelling collaborative behaviour and fostering a sense of community. KEY TAKEAWAYS Creating a culture of collaboration is crucial for maximising skills, resources, and experience within an organisation. As organisations grow larger, collaboration becomes more challenging due to scale, diversity, virtual teams, and highly skilled individuals. Eight ways to build a culture of collaboration include executive support, creating the right environment, modelling collaborative behaviour, fostering a gift culture, implementing HR practices, ensuring requisite skills, supporting a sense of community, and having the right team leaders and structure. Executive support sets the tone for collaboration throughout the organisation. HR practices should include rewarding and recognizing collaborative efforts to encourage teamwork. BEST MOMENTS "A culture of collaboration is absolutely critical because when people collaborate, then they bring their best to the team and you're able to really maximise the skills, the resources and the experience that you have." "Those are the four characteristics that make a large organisation successful, but also they're the four reasons why collaboration can be harder." "Are you demonstrating collaboration in the way that you are conducting yourself at work? So, you know, very often all eyes are on the boss." "So as organisations grow, as they get bigger, become more diverse, maybe more virtual, different offices, etc. This can become harder." Ep 421How To Have Difficult Conversations
Jeannette examines the challenging topic of having difficult conversations, addressing the common tendency to avoid or delay such conversations, and emphasising the importance of addressing issues constructively. She provides valuable insights and practical tips on how to approach and navigate difficult conversations effectively. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's essential to have the courage to confront the reality of a situation and not brush things under the carpet. Trust your gut feelings and instincts when it comes to knowing when a difficult conversation needs to happen. When having a challenging conversation, aim to engage productively and seek a resolution rather than getting into arguments. Be mindful of the emotional impact your words and actions may have on others during difficult conversations. Always aim to seek a resolution in difficult conversations, whether it leads to improvement, reconciliation, or closure. BEST MOMENTS "I am not a confrontational person. I personally struggle with some of this." "Life is curly. It is not a straight line. So first of all, interrogate your reality." "You're always looking to seek a resolution. And by having a resolution, try to avoid words like never, and always, because they're too black and white." Jeannette looks at the complexities of leading across multiple generations in the workplace, exploring the characteristics, values, and perspectives of five distinct generations: traditionalists, baby boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Gen Z. KEY TAKEAWAYS Each generation, from traditionalists to Gen Z, has unique perspectives, values, and work styles shaped by the era they grew up in. Leaders can leverage the diverse experiences and knowledge of different generations within their teams to foster a culture of continuous learning and development. To lead across multiple generations, it is crucial to bridge the gap between them, find common ground, and promote values such as respect, trust, and psychological safety.
