Ep 498The Case for the ‘Good Enough’ Job
How can you reclaim your power in a job that’s just “good enough”?It turns out The Perfect Job isn’t nearly as common as the LinkedIn posts would have us believe. Most of us spend our working hours in a job that’s okay but far from perfect. The good news is that you can thrive in a just-okay career if you embrace the art of “leading yourself.” In this episode, I sit down with Elizabeth Lotardo to talk about this very concept, which doubles as the title of her new book, Leading Yourself. Elizabeth has spent years helping people at all different stages of their careers discover the potential that awaits when they stop pursuing perfection and begin taking charge of the job they’re already in.Learn to maximize the job you already have by uncovering:The reason we feel like we’re failing if we aren’t holding out for the perfect job;Why it can be empowering to “give up on the dream” of getting a paycheck from our passionHow small changes in your day-to-day can make a huge difference; And when you might need to phone it in before you fall apart.Related Links:Leading Yourself: Find More Joy, Meaning, and Opportunities in the Job You Already Have (Despite Imperfect Bosses, Weird Economies, Lethargic Coworkers, Annoying Systems, and Too Many Deliverables) - https://bookshop.org/p/books/leading-yourself-elizabeth-lotardo/20999467?ean=9781394238705&next=tElizabeth’s website - https://www.elizabethlotardo.com/Follow Elizabeth on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabethlotardoDrop the Ball: Achieving More by Doing Less by Tiffany Dufu - https://bookshop.org/p/books/drop-the-ball-achieving-more-by-doing-less-tiffany-dufu/8440970LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 497Where Have All the Good Friends Gone?
Feel like you’re the only one keeping your friendships going? Recently, I received a letter from a listener about an extremely relatable issue: how to build or rebuild stronger friendships when it seems to be increasingly difficult to do so.You’ve probably experienced some shifts in friend frequency and intensity throughout your adult years. Making plans and finding the right people to share platonic relationships with gets harder as our priorities shift and our lives get more hectic. In this episode, I explore some of the ways I’ve dealt with this increasingly common and publicized problem myself.Spark some hope with these actionable approaches to fixing your friendships:Identify exactly what’s missing from your relationships;Normalize and ritualize casual hosting;Keep resentment from curbing your call for companions.Related Links:I’m Starting to Think You Guys Don’t Really Want a “Village” on Slate - https://slate.com/life/2024/11/parenting-advice-friends-loneliness-village.htmlStuff Mom Never Told You, Can We Be Friends? - https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-stuff-mom-never-told-you-21123631/episode/can-we-be-friends-30231271/Americans Need to Party More on The Atlantic - https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2025/01/throw-more-parties-loneliness/681203/Bossed Up Episode 479: America’s Parents Are Not Okay - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode479TAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 494Matrescence and the Transformation of Motherhood
What do you know about matrescence? Most people will agree that everything changes with parenthood, and that’s what this term covers: the process of becoming a mother. Yet, despite shared private understanding and a large body of recent research on all the physiological and mental effects, many policies and medical processes continue to ignore what mothers have always known.Lucy Jones is a journalist and the author of Matrescene: On The Metamorphosis of Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood. In this episode, we delve into what’s lacking in support for matrescence and why, and how ongoing research, policy changes, and sharing information through resources like Lucy’s book can help change the conversation. Whether you’re already a mother, are considering becoming one, or support one in any way, Lucy’s insights will be enlightening and empowering.Discover the details of matrescence and why we need to talk more about it:The origins and importance of having a word for this universal, natural experience; The impact of not having enough information in the early months and years of parenthood; The permanent changes the brain goes through during this period; The social disconnect between the expectation to give birth and the lack of support.Related Links:Matrescence: On Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood by Lucy Jones - https://bookshop.org/p/books/matrescence-on-the-mind-body-spirit-transformations-of-pregnancy-childbirth-and-motherhood-lucy-jones/20398692Lucy’s website - https://lucyfjones.com/Discover all of Lucy’s books: https://lucyfjones.com/books/Lucy on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/lucyfjones/Episode 333, An Honest Look Into Motherhood and Health - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode333Episode 488, Talking Menopause at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode488Pregnancy leads to long-lasting changes in human brain structure, Nature Neuroscience - https://www.nature.com/articles/nn.4458The Birth Of A Mother by Alexandra Sacks - https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/08/well/family/the-birth-of-a-mother.htmlOf Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution by Adrienne Rich - https://bookshop.org/p/books/of-woman-born-motherhood-as-experience-and-institution-adrienne-rich/8794956?ean=9780393541427LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 493Reporting In From Maternity Leave
Today’s episode marks my return from maternity leave, and a lot has happened in the world since I was last behind the mic! I’m kicking off my return with a recap of the past few months and sharing my future vision for the Bossed Up podcast.Tune in to hear my thoughts on election 2024, transitioning from one child to two, and how the many hats I wear will impact the conversations we cover here in the coming months.Tune in for some hot takes, reflections, and my vision for the future, including:Two observations that stuck out to me most during this campaign cycle; How becoming a “girl mom” has impacted my mindset; And a few experiments I’ll be exploring with the podcast this year.Related Links:Episode 479: America’s Parents Are Not Okay - http://bossedup.org/episode479Episode 477: The Impact of State Abortion Bans on HR Politics - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode477Episode 469: Surprising Trends Impacting Women At Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode469Episode 463: A Different Approach To My Second Maternity Leave - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode463Boy Mom: Reimagining Boyhood In The Age of Impossible Masculinity by Ruth Whippman - https://bookshop.org/p/books/boymom-reimagining-boyhood-in-the-age-of-impossible-masculinity-ruth-whippman/20583177?ean=9780593577639&next=t&next=tNYT: Masculinity is on the Ballot https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/17/opinion/masculinity-liberal-conservative.htmlWTF Podcast with Marc Maron - https://www.wtfpod.com/podcastTAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 492The Power To Work Happier
How can positive psychology help curb burnout? We’re a bunch of overachievers here in the Bossed Up community, and burnout is a pretty common thread between us. Burnout is painful, frustrating, and—as my guest on this episode explains—more avoidable than we might think if we’re willing to work on “working happier.”Stella Grizont was named the world’s leading happiness expert by TIME Magazine. She uses her master's in Applied Positive Psychology to help leaders find career fulfillment and organizations engage their employees more deeply. We discuss her recent book and how her approach can help you help yourself, leading to more enjoyment in work and in life.Embrace Stella’s thoughtful approach to positive psychology by uncovering:The impact of negativity bias and a play mindset when navigating uncertainty; How to practice self-compassion when waffling between anxiety and excitement;Learned optimism and the three Ps that can help you cultivate a brighter outlook; Why we should focus on “What do I want to be?” before “What do I want to do?”Related Links:The Work Happiness Method: Master the 8 Skills of Career Fulfillment - https://www.stellagrizont.com/work-happiness-method-bookDownload the Vision Generator - https://stellagrizont.mykajabi.com/visiongeneratorSign up for Stella’s newsletter on her website - https://www.stellagrizont.com/Connect with Stella on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stella-grizont-a4b7792/Connect with Stella on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stellagrizont/Oprah speaks to finding your vision - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfrOcfc8zNsLEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 491Debunking Imposter Syndrome as a Women's Issue
When did you first experience imposter syndrome? So many people resonate with feeling like frauds who sweet-talked their way into their positions and could be found out, socially ostracized, and fired at any moment. Imposter syndrome or impostorism is often seen as a women’s issue, and I am always quick to stress this isn’t the case—it’s a human issue. A recent report provides some new numbers that raise a different question: is impostorism a men’s issue? In this episode, I break down what these findings really reveal. It’s time to refocus the imposter syndrome conversation:Why this is so often considered a women’s issue; What the research says about who really experiences impostorism;Which traits actually lead to feelings of ineptitude.Related Links:The original research on imposter syndrome - https://www.paulineroseclance.com/pdf/ip_high_achieving_women.pdfKorn Ferry’s Workforce 2024 study - https://www.kornferry.com/content/dam/kornferry-v2/featured-topics/pdf/workforce-2024-report.pdfFortune, The Share of Fortune 500 Businesses Run By Women Can’t Seem to Budge Beyond 10% - https://fortune.com/2024/06/04/share-of-fortune-500-businesses-run-by-women/Harvard Business Review, Women Rising: The Unseen Barriers - https://hbr.org/2013/09/women-rising-the-unseen-barriersEpisode 425, The Gender Confidence Gap Myth - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode425LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupEmilie’s book, “Bossed Up” - https://www.bossedup.org/bookBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 490How Do We Unlearn Silence and Voice Our Worth?
Why is it so hard to remember that we deserve to be heard? Staying silent in our professional lives can feel like the safe choice, but it can have unintended consequences on our overall career trajectory. In this episode, Elaine Lin Hering shares what her research, experience in mediation and conflict management, and new book "Unlearning Silence" have to say about why so many of us—especially women—are reticent to raise our voices. She highlights the intrinsic connection between wielding our voices—both audibly and through our actions—and recognizing our self-worth. Examine the ways that silence impacts your own life, including:Where does our tendency toward silence stem from?;Why we need to question and dismantle the “babble hypothesis”;Why just talking more isn’t the goal of unlearning silence; How leaders can actively push back against silencing team members.Related Links:Elaine’s book, Unlearning Silence: How to Speak Your Mind, Unleash Talent, and Live More Fully - https://elainelinhering.com/book/Episode 428, Finding Your Voice at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode428Episode 246, Lessons from Improv to Own Your Voice and Speak Up at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode246Episode 377, What all women can learn from women of color in leadership with Deepa Purushothaman - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode377Episode 445, 3 Tips For Managing Too Many Meetings - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode445SPEAK UP: A Live Assertive Communication Course For Women In The Workplace - https://www.bossedup.org/speakupMicro Activism: How You Can Make a Difference in the World Without a Bullhorn by Omkari L. Ep 489How the Cost of Childcare Has Become a Workforce Issue
We need to talk about the impact of the childcare crisis on the workforce! Some people may wonder why this topic matters beyond its impact on families of young children. The truth is, this issue has wide-reaching ramifications for the nation’s economy as a whole, and that deserves our attention whether we have children or not. In this episode, I share what the research and statistics reveal about the direct link between the exorbitant price of childcare and the labor shortage that’s crunching companies across the U.S. Let’s break down why this is a problem everyone should care about:The disproportionate impact of childcare costs on different demographics; The broader ramifications on the economy as a whole; What organizations can do to start making a difference.Related Links:Episode 424, The Jobs of America’s Next Silicon Valley https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode424Episode 434, The Economic Imperative of Affordable Childcare - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode434EPIC- Executives Partnering To Invest In Children - https://www.coloradoepic.org/Episode 463, a Different Approach to My Second Maternity Leave - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode463Episode 479, America’s Parents Are Not Okay - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode479Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Program - https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2016/09/30/2016-22986/child-care-and-development-fund-ccdf-programHow Much Childcare Costs by State in the USA in 2024 - https://illumine.app/blog/how-much-childcare-costs-by-state-in-usa/Economic Data Underscores the Need for Significant, Sustained Investment in Child Care and Early Learning - https://www.ffyf.org/resources/2021/12/latest-economic-data-underscores-the-need-for-significant-sustained-investment-in-child-care-and-early-learning/Over Half of Families are Spending More Than 20% of Income on Child Care - https://www.ffyf.org/resources/2022/06/over-half-of-families-are-spending-more-than-20--on-child-care/How Child Care Disruptions Hurt Parents of Color Most - https://www.americanprogress.org/article/child-care-disruptions-hurt-parents-color/U.S. Child Care Crisis Is Holding Back The Workforce - https://www.forbes.com/sites/mariaflynn/2023/11/02/us-child-care-crisis-is-holding-back-the-workforce/U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showing the labor force that is “Employed - With a job, not at work, Childcare problems” - https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNU02096055$122 Billion: The Growing, Annual Cost of the Infant-Toddler Child Care Crisis - https://strongnation.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/1598/05d917e2-9618-4648-a0ee-1b35d17e2a4d.pdf?1674854626&inline;%20filename=%22$122%20Billion:%20The%20Growing,%20Annual%20Cost%20of%20the%20Infant-Toddler%20Child%20Care%20Crisis.pdf%22UPS Expands Emergency Day Care After Pilot Program Cuts Turnover - https://www.hrdive.com/news/ups-emergency-day-care-pilot-program-cut-turnover/697205/Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens Joins UPS CEO Carol B. Ep 488Talking Menopause at Work
How much do you know about menopause? Though it’s as natural as puberty and affects almost everyone with a uterus, this life stage has long been a taboo subject in polite society. In recent years, though, the conversation has gotten a lot louder. Dr. Jen Gunter has been a leader in this conversation as an obstetrician and gynecologist with more than three decades of experience. Dr. Jen is the author of multiple bestsellers and a popular blog, and the host of the Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter podcast. In our conversation, Dr. Jen and I dig into the myths and symptoms of menopause and how this transition affects women in the workplace.Learn more about this critical transition and its impacts in the workplace, including: Why we are only recently starting to talk about this stage of life; Some misconceptions debunked by the facts about menopause; The complicated history of menopausal hormone therapy; How changes in the workplace could improve this sometimes chaotic experience.Related Links:The Menopause Manifesto: Own Your Health with Facts and Feminism by Dr. Jen Gunter - https://bookshop.org/book/9780806540665Blood: The Science, Medicine, and Mythology of Menstruation by Dr. Jen Gunter - https://bookshop.org/book/9780806540689The Vagina Bible: The Vulva and the Vagina: Separating the Myth from the Medicine by Dr. Jen Gunter - https://bookshop.org/book/9780806539317The Vajenda, Dr. Jen’s blog - https://vajenda.substack.com/Jensplaining with Dr. Jen Gunter - https://www.cbc.ca/mediacentre/program/jensplainingThe 2024 Deloitte Women @ Work Report - https://www.deloitte.com/content/dam/assets-shared/docs/collections/2024/deloitte-women-at-work-2024-a-global-outlook.pdf?dl=1Episode 469, Surprising Trends Impacting Women at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode469Episode 414, New Rights for Pregnant Workers - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode414Dr. Jen on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/drjengunterDr. Jen on X - https://twitter.com/DrJenGunterDr. Jen on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/DrJGunter/Take Action with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/Follow me on Instagram: www.instagram.com/emiliearies Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 487Create a Compelling Vision for Your Life in the New Year
What would change if you decentered your career from your identity? Decentering your work from your identity might seem a counterintuitive topic for a podcast about career development, but burnout and disillusionment are running rampant these days, so it’s not too surprising this concept is getting a lot of airtime. Our work should be important and provide us with purpose, but it shouldn’t become the only important and purposeful part of who we are. Taking the spotlight off the career part of your identity gives you space and permission to respect the role of work in your life without requiring you to relinquish every part of yourself to your job. In this episode, I outline three considerations to help you realize this shift.Consider a more balanced alternative to living for your job:How community involvement contributes to who you are and will be;Why passive rest and renewal don’t cut it, and what to try instead; Why you need to get real about the divide between your work identity and the rest of your life.Related Links:Episode 456, How Connection Can Cure What Ails Us - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode456Mondo, “Tips To Keep Your Job From Becoming Your Identity” - https://mondo.com/insights/tips-to-keep-your-job-from-becoming-your-identity/“Working Identity: Unconventional Strategies for Reinventing Your Career,” by Herminia Ibarras - https://herminiaibarra.com/working-identity-book/The Ezra Klein Show, “Tired? Ep 486How Parents Can Help Kids Navigate Their Job Search
How can you support the young adult in your life as they embark on the first steps of their career? Gen Z is coming of age in a strange new world, and that can make it tricky to figure out how to help them. My guest on this episode, Beth Hendler-Grunt, founded Next Great Step to help ease this transition. Using approaches grounded in psychology and her own background in sales, Beth and her team support thousands of young adults (and their parents!) to gain confidence in their skills and land their first jobs out of school.Uncover tools to help the young adult in your life through the modern job search process, including:How to understand the unique challenges this generation faces in today’s job market;Modulate your expectations to balance patience, support, and trust;Understand the inextricable link between sales and the job search; And how to support a young adult whose career goals seem bound to fail.Related Links:Learn more about Beth’s work - https://nextgreatstep.com/Connect with Beth on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/bethhendlergrunt/Connect with Beth on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/next_great_step/ The Next Great Step: The Parents' Guide to Launching Your New Grad into a Career - https://nextgreatstep.com/book/The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Johnathan Haidt - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-anxious-generation-how-the-great-rewiring-of-childhood-is-causing-an-epidemic-of-mental-illness-jonathan-haidt/20144236?ean=9780593655030The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children by Shefali Tsabary - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-conscious-parent-transforming-ourselves-empowering-our-children-shefali-tsabary/6995894Episode 106, Supporting Your Partner’s Career Conundrums - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode106HIRED: my Job Search Accelerator - https://www.bossedup.org/gethiredBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 485How to Move Past Taking Things Personally at Work
How do you deal with a mistake or criticism at work? If you find yourself starting to spiral into anxiety, overthinking everything you’ve ever done that might have caused the current situation, you’re far from alone. We’re all human, and, unfortunately, that means when we screw up or receive less than glowing feedback at work, we have a tendency to take it personally. In this episode, I explore how we can move away from shame in these situations and shore up our self-worth so that we can resiliently and proactively deal with our mistakes in ways that empower positive change and set us up to be stronger in the future—both in and beyond our careers.Try these tricks for taking the personal out of professional missteps:How to make sure you’re telling yourself the actual, objective story; Why it’s essential to name, rather than negate, whatever you’re feeling; How to use that unfortunate situation to plan your confident comeback.Related Links:Episode 323, How To Lead With Emotional Intelligence - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode323 book, “Permission to Feel” - https://marcbrackett.com/permission-to-feel/Episode 467, How To Handle Negative Reactions When You Speak Up - https://www.bossedup.com/podcast/episode467LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelup“Bossed Up: A Grown Woman’s Guide to Getting Your Sh*t Together” by Emilie Aries - https://www.bossedup.org/bookBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 479America’s Parents Are Not Okay
Caregivers: when’s the last time you didn’t feel stressed out? In August, the U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory, titled “Parents Under Pressure,” that identified parental mental health as an urgent public health issue. Nearly half of parent participants in the surveys confirm that “their stress is completely overwhelming.” The wellbeing of these adults is worrisome on its own, and research also shows a strong correlation between poor mental health in parents and poor physical and mental health in children. In other words: this public health issue impacts multiple generations and, by extension, our entire country. In this episode, I take a closer look at the advisory and what workplaces should be doing to mitigate this national crisis.Discover what the research says and what your workplace should be doing about it:Seven unavoidable causes of parental stress; The overt connection between parental mental health and talent retention;Specific steps organizations can take to help improve the wellbeing of employees who are also parents or caregivers.Related Links:U.S. Public Health Service “Parents Under Pressure Advisory” - https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/parents-under-pressure.pdfEpisode 468, “Disrupting Elder Care: We Need to Talk More About Working Daughters” - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode468Episode 434, “The Economic Imperative of Affordable Childcare” - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode434Episode 472, “How We Get Over Overwork to Build a Better Life” - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode472TAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 478How Managers Can Practice Daily DEI and Create Equitable Work Cultures
How can managers navigate the ever-changing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging landscape? While most people grasp the overall intention of DEIB—fair and equitable treatment for all workers—the specifics are nuanced and easily misunderstood, and they can be difficult to implement, especially in the face of recent pushback.Alida Miranda-Wolff is a DEIB practitioner, author, and podcast host driven by a deep passion for cultivating belonging. In 2019, she launched Ethos Talent, a full-service DEIB and employee advocacy firm that serves companies all around the world. In this episode, she leverages her decade of expertise to explain how support for this field has fluctuated over the years and what leaders—and first-time managers in particular—can do to facilitate the day-to-day integration of these practices, which are deeply intertwined with basic human rights.Elevate DEIB in your own leadership practice with these takeaways:How managers can be inclusive and equitable in their day-to-day leadership; How to navigate difficult interpersonal situations through a DEIB lens; Why the current political climate is such a challenge for DEIB practitioners and managers; The problem with the segmentation of DEIB within organizations.Related Links:The First-Time Manager: DEI by Alida Miranda-Wolff - https://alidamirandawolff.com/book/“Care Work with Alida Miranda-Wolff” podcast - https://alidamirandawolff.com/podcast/Connect with Alida on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/alidamw/Learn more about Alida and her work - https://alidamirandawolff.comWork with Ethos - https://www.ethostalent.com/Bias in Feedback Decision Tree - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1C-HMz4RFwQNuIzMgS0wCmafQX09N81lp/viewEpisode 388, How To Leverage Your Power and Push For More Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode388Episode 423, Being White and Latina - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode423Ezra Klein affordability crisis article, “The Economic Theory That Explains Why Americans Are So Mad” - https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/07/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-annie-lowrey.htmlIntercept diversity and social justice article, “the Evolution of Union Busting” - https://theintercept.com/2022/06/07/union-busting-tactics-diversity/Alida’s interview with Truthout “Here’s How Workers Can Build Power Amid Corporate Co-optation of DEI Programs” - https://truthout.org/articles/heres-how-workers-can-build-power-amid-corporate-co-optation-of-dei-programs/Philosopher and psychiatrist Frantz Fanon’s work “Black Skin, White Masks” - https://monoskop.org/images/a/a5/Fanon_Frantz_Black_Skin_White_Masks_1986.pdfFrantz Fanon’s other work “the Wretched of the Earth” - https://monoskop.org/images/6/6b/Fanon_Frantz_The_Wretched_of_the_Earth_1963.pdfElite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (And Everything Else) by Olúfẹ́mi O. Ep 477The Impact of State Abortion Bans on HR Policies
How will the various abortion bans across the U.S. affect HR policies? When Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, federal protections on abortion ceased, and states were suddenly free to make independent decisions about this essential healthcare issue. The new laws range from full allowance to complete bans and criminal charges for those who circumvent them. So how are employers and HR teams navigating the impacts of this change, and how are employees across the country reacting when it comes to travel and job change considerations? The consequences of how these new laws impact women and their careers—both in states with bans and those without—can’t be overstated. In this episode, I examine some of the policies being discussed in regard to women’s rights and safety and how these laws are impacting both organizations and employees.Find out how abortion ban HR policies are affecting our career decisions:Why announcing abortion travel accommodations is a questionable corporate decision; How companies might begin to develop truly beneficial travel policies; The impact of abortion bans on the entertainment and events industry;Survey says: recruitment is likely to feel the impacts of these shifting laws.Related Links:SHRM: Companies Are Announcing Abortion-Travel Benefits Following Dobbs Decision - https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/news/benefits-compensation/employers-prepare-benefits-policy-responses-to-abortion-ruling-shrm-survey-findsSHRM: Companies Announcing Abortion Travel Benefits Following Dobbs Decision - https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/news/benefits-compensation/companies-announcing-abortion-travel-benefits-following-dobbs-decisionNorthstar: How the Events Industry Is Responding to State Abortion Bans - https://www.northstarmeetingsgroup.com/state-abortion-bans-could-drive-event-planners-cancelPerry Undem: What Does "Top Talent" Think About Working in States that Ban Abortion? - https://perryundem.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/PerryUndem-TX-Abortion-Law_Survey-Findings_0901.pdfResume Builder Sruvey - https://www.resumebuilder.com/one-third-of-job-seekers-wont-work-in-states-with-abortion-bans/Stop congratulating companies for making abortion a corporate 'perk' by Ali Griswold - https://oversharing.substack.com/p/stop-congratulating-companies-for Episode 357, How to Talk About Abortion at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode357TAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 476Co-Creating Gender Equality in Leadership
Men comprise over 90% of the CEOs in the U.S.—so how do we help them become allies in the vital pursuit of workplace equality? Rather than dismissing the defensiveness that sometimes arises in men who believe promoting more women to power means taking theirs away, Wendy Wallbridge uses her platform to change the narrative. She teaches tech companies how to create cultures of belonging and strategies for workplace equality, with a focus on equipping men as allies. Her strategies show next-generation business leaders that the right approach to equality lifts everyone up: the employee, the executive, and the company.Discover how both men and women leaders can pursue gender equality in the workplace, including:The very real benefits of gender equality for men in positions of power; Why emotional intelligence is the leadership skill of the future; The three biggest challenges facing women and non-binary people in the workplace; How to use micro-interventions to improve inequality in the corporate world.Related Links:Learn more about the Spiral Up program - https://spiralup.com/Order Spiraling Upward: The 5 Co-Creative Powers for Women on the Rise - https://spiralup.com/book/Read Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez -https://bookshop.org/p/books/invisible-women-data-bias-in-a-world-designed-for-men-caroline-criado-perez/15136602Bossed Up Ep 452: Redefining Success: Women and the Fight for a Fair Economy - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode452Level Up: A Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 475Why Non-Competes Are Back From the Dead
Earlier this year, the FTC put forth a ruling that would ban non-compete agreements nationwide. But last month, a Texas federal court blocked this endeavor, leaving workers in limbo while the Supreme Court considers taking up the issue next. In today’s episode, I explore what’s going on and why there is still hope for a new path forward to defeat non-compete agreements for good.Get the latest details on this recent workers’ rights development:Why the lack of a federal ban isn’t the end of the story;Where the power to prevent harmful non-competes lies now; What we as citizens can do to foster fair policies for workers.Related Links:Episode 459, Why Non-Compete Agreements Can No Longer Derail Your Career - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode459Economic Innovation Group’s State Non-Compete Law Tracker - https://eig.org/state-noncompete-map/Axios: The Future Of The Noncompete Ban Isn't Totally Bleak - https://www.axios.com/2024/08/23/noncompete-ban-statesTAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 474Cultivate a Culture of Growth Within Your Organization
Growth mindset is a hot topic these days. We hear a lot about how important it is to approach life and work open to learning, changing, and growing. This concept is often focused on the individual, but my guest today centers her research on how to build a workplace culture that fosters a growth mindset for all.Mary C. Murphy is a professor of psychological and brain sciences at Indiana University and a protege of mindset scholar Carol Dweck. During her PhD, she began to explore the potential for cultures of growth to create learning organizations. Mary and I explore the research and practice behind how employees and leaders alike can start transforming their organizations with growth in mind.Discover how cultures of growth build better businesses for all, including:How to identify the current mindset culture of your workplace; The difference between cultures of growth and cultures of genius; How to circumvent mindset triggers with mindful feedback; The huge impact of cultures of growth on diversity and equity.Related Links:Mary’s book “Cultures of Growth” - https://marycmurphy.com/cultures-of-growth/Take the Mindset Triggers Assessment - https://marycmurphy.com/resource/mindset-triggers-assessment/Take the Mindset Culture Assessment - https://marycmurphy.com/resource/mindset-culture-assessment/Connect with Mary on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mary-murphy-2b4a70235/Episode 452, Women and the Fight for a Fair Economy - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode452LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 473When Your Promotion is Actually a Glass Cliff
What do you think of when you hear the term “glass cliff”? I have been pondering this concept for a while, especially in light of the upcoming election. In today’s episode, I share my thoughts on the problems, and potential opportunities, inherent in the social construct that so often presents women with their opportunity to lead only when the ship is sinking. If you have ever sought or been offered a promotion that seems a bit doomed to fail, this episode is for you.Consider the glass cliff on your way through the glass ceiling as we explore:The origin of this term and the research that backs it up;The potential dangers of accepting a leadership role in a crumbling company; The potential opportunity waiting within this gender-biased blind spot.Related Links:Episode 465, What Kamala’s Candidacy Means for Women Leaders - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode465New York Times, When That Promotion is Really a ‘Glass Cliff’ - https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/12/business/glass-cliff-effect.htmlHarvard Business Review, How Women End Up on the “Glass Cliff” - https://hbr.org/2011/01/how-women-end-up-on-the-glass-cliffKathryn Kincaid’s thesis, Why Can Why Can’t a Woman Fail Like a Man? - https://digitalcommons.butler.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1401&context=ugthesesLEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 472How We Get Over Overwork to Build a Better Life
What individual, organizational, and policy changes will help us transform the daily grind into the good life? The conversation around work-life balance and women in the workplace can feel stalled. You might speak out and speak up about the problems and inequity you see every day, yet insufficient individual solutions remain the most common recommendations. Ep 470Grief in the Workplace: Support, Empathy, and Healing
How do you navigate grief in the workplace in an empathic and supportive way? We all experience loss, and we might default to assuming the only place for grief is in the home. The truth is that a loss permeates every aspect of our lives, sometimes for years or even decades, and it certainly crosses into the workplace. Krista St-Germain experienced a devastating loss in 2016 when her husband was killed by an impaired driver. That trauma propelled her into grief, then therapy, then research. Today, she is the founder of the Mom Goes On group coaching program and the host of the Widowed Mom podcast. She shares her hard-won wisdom on what we need to know about grief and how to navigate it in the workplace, both for ourselves and in support of others.Question your assumptions about grief and learn to better support yourself or others who are navigating it, including:How we’ve come to misunderstand the grieving process; The role time plays when we are healing from a loss; How to navigate interactions with grieving coworkers; The possibilities of life beyond grieving and post-traumatic growth.Related Links:Learn more about Krista’s work - https://www.coachingwithkrista.com/Follow Krista on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/lifecoachkrista/Connect with Krista on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/coachingwithkristaThe Widowed Mom Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-widowed-mom-podcast/id1468127632The Grieving Brain by Mary-Frances O’Connor - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-grieving-brain-the-surprising-science-of-how-we-learn-from-love-and-loss-mary-frances-o-connor/16976128?ean=9780062946249Report from the Death Studies Journal on the Dual Process Model - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10848151/Brené Brown - Silver Linings Clip - https://brenebrown.com/videos/rsa-short-empathy/On Death & Dying: What the Dying Have to Teach Doctors, Nurses, Clergy & Their Own Families by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross - https://bookshop.org/p/books/on-death-dying-what-the-dying-have-to-teach-doctors-nurses-clergy-their-own-families-elisabeth-kubler-ross/9165298?ean=9781476775548On Grief & Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross - https://bookshop.org/p/books/on-grief-grieving-finding-the-meaning-of-grief-through-the-five-stages-of-loss-david-kessler/6699869?ean=9781476775555Episode 468: Disrupting Elder Care: We Need To Talk More About Working Daughters - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode468LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/Follow me on Instagram: www.instagram.com/emiliearies Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 468Disrupting Elder Care: We Need To Talk More About Working Daughters
How do you balance caring for your aging parents and your career without burning out? We organize so much in our lives, from our workdays to our childcare. The care of our aging parents or other loved ones, however, can blindside the best of us. When this responsibility suddenly falls into your lap while you’re in the thick of leveling up your career, staying on top of daily expectations, and maybe even raising young children, what do you do?Liz O’Donnell was faced with this situation, and after more than a decade in the field, she is a recognized expert on working while caregiving. She is the founder of Working Daughters, which supports women balancing elder care on top of their careers and all the other demands of adult life, and the author of Working Daughter: A Guide to Care for Your Aging Parents While Making a Living. Ep 467How to Handle Negative Reactions When You Speak Up
Our world is still conflicted about whether or not it likes assertive women. In recent months, I have received both positive and negative feedback about my outspokenness. When I’m confronted with the opinion that my assertive approach to communication might leave a poor taste in people’s mouths, I still have to fight the urge to hide or get defensive, but I have developed a few skills that make these interactions more productive. The road to owning your voice and raising it confidently when you have something to say can be a long one, especially if you were raised to keep quiet. In this episode, I lay out three tips to help you navigate the situation the next time someone gives you negative feedback about your communication style.Challenge yourself to start putting these tips into action. Listen now to learn:Why it’s better to ask for more information than to get defensive; How to decide whose feedback really matters; Why you don’t have to act on all the feedback you receive.Related Links:Read “The Courage to Be Disliked: The Japanese Phenomenon That Shows You How to Change Your Life and Achieve Real Happiness” by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-courage-to-be-disliked-the-japanese-phenomenon-that-shows-you-how-to-change-your-life-and-achieve-real-happiness-ichiro-kishimi/6691584Get Emilie’s book, “Bossed Up: A Grown Woman's Guide to Getting Your Sh*t Together” - https://www.bossedup.org/bookSPEAK UP: An Assertive Communication Course- https://www.bossedup.org/speakupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 457How To Explain Your Layoff in a Job Interview
How should you address a layoff in a job interview? This year of job market flux has seen more than 80,000 layoffs in the tech industry alone, on top of 250,000+ in 2023. These statistics highlight just how normal and not-at-all-shameful layoffs are, but that doesn’t mean living through them is easy.In today’s episode, I have three takeaways for managing the interview question that will inevitably come up if you’re one of the hundreds of thousands of people who were unceremoniously let go in the past year and a half. Ep 456How Connection Can Cure What Ails Us
In our modern world, where isolation, loneliness, and stress are at all-time highs, how do we fend off the feelings—and the medical symptoms—that plague such an outsized percentage of our species?Journalist Julia Hotz’s new book, The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging, explores the phenomenon of social prescribing, a medicine-adjacent approach being adopted in the UK that sees doctors prescribing things like “sea swimming” (yes, really!) and has the potential to alleviate not only the health burdens many of us face in our daily lives but also the pressures on the medical system and the heavy costs of medical care. In this episode, I talk with Julia about what inspired her to write The Connection Cure and the incredible and surprising results of her extensive research. Discover how social prescribing could take you from asking, “what’s wrong with me?” to “what matters to me?” instead:Defining and demystifying the concept of social prescribing; How reconnecting with how we used to live can drastically improve our health;Where our deep-seated misconceptions about mental health come from;Whether social prescribing stands a chance of taking hold in the U.S.Related Links:Order Julia’s book - https://www.socialprescribing.co/Find Julia on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hotzthoughts/Episode 172, The Healing Power of Nature - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode172Episode 440 - The Problem with Self-Help - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode440The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative by Florence Williams - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-nature-fix-why-nature-makes-us-happier-healthier-and-more-creative-florence-williams/16616779?ean=9780393355574How to take the news that depression has not been shown to be caused by a chemical imbalance by Dr. Joanna Moncrieff - https://joannamoncrieff.com/2022/07/24/how-to-take-the-news-that-depression-has-not-been-shown-to-be-caused-by-a-chemical-imbalance/Dopesick by Beth Macy - https://bookshop.org/p/books/dopesick-dealers-doctors-and-the-drug-company-that-addicted-america-beth-macy/16344771?ean=9780316551304Dr. Rachel Zofffness' Pain Management Workbook -https://www.amazon.com/Pain-Management-Workbook-Powerful-Mindfulness/dp/1684036445Bossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The upcoming book Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy, which my guest June Carbone co-authored with Naomi Cahn and Nancy Levit, explores the history, politics, and legality of how we got to where we are today, the impact this system has on women and the quest for gender equality, and the efforts being made to reverse these trends.
