Inside failed Nabil Fekir transfer and how Liverpool got lucky with narrow £52m escape for Coutinho replacement
Wind back to 2018, and Liverpool spent more heavily in the transfer market than they ever had before. Backed in part by the £143m deal that had seen Philippe Coutinho move to Barcelona six months earlier - though £75m of that had already been splashed on Virgil van Dijk - Liverpool then went and signed Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri for a combined total of around £170m. But they could very easily have spent another £52m, having been minutes away from a transfer being announced for French attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir. So, for this special podcast, Matt Addison is joined by Kristian Walsh, who was working on the Liverpool ECHO's sports desk at the time, Spanish football writer Andrew Miller, who specialises in Real Betis, the club that Fekir plays for now, and finally Jonathan Johnson, a French football expert who gives the view from Lyon, as they explain why the deal collapsed, and how that has impacted the player himself and Liverpool since. Certainly, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool could have taken a very different path had they pressed ahead with a move for the number 10...Get exclusive podcasts direct to your inbox every week for FREE by joining the Blood Red Club. Billion pound debt | Messi on a free | Cutting huge Coutinho losses | Gini snub | Pedri future... just what's going on at Barcelona?
There was devastation for Spain last night as they lost an incredible game to Italy on penalties in the first Euro 2020 semi-final. But the performance of Barcelona’s brilliant young midfielder Pedri shows that the future is bright for Spanish football. But what about the 18-year-old’s club side? You don’t need reminding that the last time Liverpool came across Barcelona was back on May 7, 2019 when Jurgen Klopp’s team produced one of the greatest comebacks of all time. That 4-0 defeat shook Barca to their core. But as we’ll learn on this special podcast, as seismic as that result was, the club’s problems had set in long before then, and has certainly accelerated since. Samuel Marsden reports on Barcelona for ESPN and Diario Sport, and Paul Wheelock picked up the phone to him for the first time since before the Miracle of Anfield to find out exactly how bad things have gotten at Camp Nou. Sam talks about Lionel Messi, and whether Barca will be able to sign the world’s greatest player to another contract or be forced to let him leave on a free; whether the reports are true that they would really accept a £120m loss on Philippe Coutinho; their decision to sell Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid last summer, and why Gini Wijnaldum didn’t become the latest Liverpool player to join Barcelona this summer. And given the stark financial situation at the club, will they be able to keep hold of Pedri, who has been linked with Liverpool. Sam answers that, and gives a great insight into many more subjects we hope you find interesting.Get exclusive podcasts direct to your inbox every week for FREE by joining the Blood Red Club. Blood Red Club EXCLUSIVE: Inside track on Liverpool target Ryan Gravenberch - a player to get very excited about
For the latest Blood Red Club exclusive podcast, Matt Addison is joined by football scout Connor McGinn for an in-depth look at Ajax prodigy Ryan Gravenberch. Gravenberch, who is still only 19, is a player that Liverpool, like many other top clubs around Europe, admire. So we get the lowdown on what type of player he is, and it soon becomes clear exactly why the Reds are interested: top stats for pressing, ball progression and plenty more, the Holland international has it all. Compared to Paul Pogba, Marco Verratti, Naby Keita and even Zinedine Zidane, Gravenberch could be ideal for a Jurgen Klopp midfielder and as both a short and long-term Gini Wijnaldum successor. Dutch Football x Liverpool FC Special: Virgil van Dijk, Gini Wijnaldum, Donyell Malen
Matt Addison is joined by Michael Statham from Football Oranje as they talk all things Dutch football, from the Netherlands' last-16 exit at the European Championships to possible Liverpool transfer target Donyell Malen. Virgil van Dijk was a big miss for Frank de Boer's side at the tournament and former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum's goals were not enough to drag his national team over the line - but will Wijnaldum be a success at PSG, and why did he choose them over a move to Barcelona? Also discussed is Ryan Gravenberch, the Ajax prodigy that Liverpool, and many other European clubs, are taking a keen look at. Michael whets the appetite on the 19-year-old midfielder, but if you'd like a more in-depth look at Gravenberch, head to www.bloodredpodcast.co.uk and sign up for our Blood Red Club before 6am UK-time on Wednesday, July 7 and a special episode with a football scout on the exciting young Ajax star will land in your inbox this week. Blood Red: How Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could prevent Dejan Lovren transfer mistake | And what about a Danny Ings reunion?
On the day that Dejan Lovren turns 32, Matt Addison is joined by Theo Squires and Marcus Banks to discuss whether Liverpool are in danger of repeating a transfer mistake. The Reds were left to rue their decision to sell Lovren last summer but, after a horrendous run of injuries, the centre-back situation is looking a lot healthier. But would that change if Nat Phillips chooses to leave? However, is another defensive position more of a concern? If Neco Williams asks to go and is sold for £10m it would leave Liverpool with just Trent Alexander-Arnold as their sole senior right-back. As it stands it doesn’t appear as if the Reds would seek a replacement for Williams. But does that have echoes of Lovren’s departure? Or could Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fill the void? Talk then turns to Jordan Henderson, whose first international goal sealed England’s Euro 2020 quarter-final win over Ukraine, and Danny Ings, who has turned down a new deal at Southampton. Should Liverpool look to re-sign the striker? The panel discuss that as well as possible interest in Belgium starlet Jeremy Doku.Get exclusive podcasts direct to your inbox every week for FREE by joining the Blood Red Club. The Academy Show: Conor Bradley, Mateusz Musialowski and Liverpool pre-season opportunities
Liverpool will return for pre-season on Monday, July 12th but with several stars still on holiday after Euro 2020 and the Copa America, there will be a few gaps that need filling by youngsters in the early weeks. Matt Addison joins Paul Wheelock to give you the lowdown on the academy starlets who could make a splash as Liverpool return, with Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff set to run the rule over the best of the up-and-coming Reds talents. Should Neco Williams leave this summer, there could be a chance for Conor Bradley to step up and become Trent Alexander-Arnold's understudy. But is he ready? And who else could have a chance to establish themselves in first-team training? Mateusz Musialowski and Tyler Morton and two of the most likely names.Get exclusive podcasts direct to your inbox every week for FREE by joining the Blood Red Club. Host Matt Addison is joined by David Lynch (before his internet connection cuts out!), Sean Bradbury and Theo Squires to debate that before looking at the transfer business being doing by Manchester United with the £72m arrival of Jadon Sancho possibly being followed by that of Raphael Varane. Analysing Anfield: Is it really 'coming home'? England and their chances of winning Euro 2020
Liverpool supporters, certainly on Merseyside, have a difficult relationship with the England national team for reasons that go beyond the footballing ones. But Reds fans will be enjoying what has been a fantastic Euro 2020 so far and no doubt many will have watched England book their place in the quarter-finals with an historic 2-0 victory over Germany at Wembley on Tuesday. Naturally, excitement is building across the country that, to borrow the lyrics of Scouser and Liverpool fan Ian Broudie from his famous 'Three Lions' song, it could be 'coming home'. But can Gareth Southgate's side actually go on to win the Euros and end their 55-year wait for a major trophy? So who better to answer that question than Josh Williams and David Hughes, our tactical experts who deal in facts and not opinions? Touching on Southgate's starting line-ups, his use of Jack Grealish and the form of Harry Kane, they dig deep into the numbers to assess England's performances so far and what it all means going into Saturday's last-eight clash with Ukraine in Rome, where it could be time to see Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson start for the first time in the tournament. Poetry in Motion: Why Everton, Rafa? | Yorkshire Pirlo and Swedish starlet catching Liverpool’s eye | Get well, Christian |
Paul Gorst and Theo Squires join Neil Fitzmaurice for an action-packed Poetry in Motion podcast discussing all the latest big Liverpool FC talking points. But before they get stuck into them, the panel discuss Christian Eriksen, who will be fitted with a heart-starting device following his collapse on the pitch during Euro 2020. The shocking incident brought back sad memories for Fitzy, whose Phoenix Nights co-star Ted Robbins suffered a heart attack on stage six years ago. After wishing Christian all the best in his recovery, talk then turns to the surprising news that former Liverpool Champions League-winning manager Rafa Benitez is set to take over Merseyside rivals Everton. There's also transfer gossip, with Paul and Theo picking out two players in particular who could be catching Liverpool's eye at Euro 2020, while also identifying a third they hope doesn't get game time for Germany during the tournament. And with the 2020-21 Premier League fixtures released, there's also time to look at the start of the season and the prospect of a full Anfield once again. The Agenda: Liverpool transfers and contracts plan as FSG continue investment
Liverpool have made it a top priority to sign up several key men to new long-term contracts this summer with Mohamed Salah topping the list of players set for new terms. So Matt Addison is joined by the ECHO's Liverpool FC correspondent, Paul Gorst, to get the latest on the situation and explore why players like Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson are so vital to get tied down, as well as to consider why some players are higher up the priority list for negotiating new deals than others. Also discussed is the wider transfer plan that Liverpool have this summer and the news that Anfield is set to be expanded further as FSG continue to invest in the club, helped, no doubt, by the £533m RedBird Capital deal that they struck earlier in the year.Watch and subscribe to our Blood Red videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BloodRedLiverpoolFCSign up for our Liverpool FC newsletters: https://data.reachplc.com/210734476470860Join our Blood Red podcast group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1656599847979758/ Learn more about your ad choices.
