EP 115: NZ Tahr Cull and the Authoritarian Left

Regardless of whether you have any interest in Himalayan tahr hunting, this issue is about far more than tahr or even NZ politics. The lines have been drawn and our will to fight is being put to the test. Politically and emotionally driven wildlife management has become the norm and not the exception. In recent months, we have seen examples of this in British Columbia, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, New Jersey and now New Zealand, to name just a few. This is a global issue that requires our full attention. @hardyardshunting_ Donate to Tahr Foundation Tahr Foundation Facebook Page

EP 113: Inside Modern Huntsman

On this show, Adam is joined by Brad Neathery, Tyler Sharp, and Charles Post, the men behind Modern Huntsman. Through their publication and platform, they have taken it upon themselves to focus on both the non-hunting public and the dyed in the wool hunting community. This is no small task. And by all accounts, they are doing a damned good job of bridging the gaps that are necessary for hunting to remain relevant in these emotionally charged times. Adam, Brad, Tyler, and Charles dive into a host of subjects related to the establishment of their brand, the challenges our community must overcome, and how they plan to help the non-hunting public better understand who we are, what we do, and why that matters. www.modernhuntsman.co @modernhuntsman

EP 112: Pre-Tajikistan Shooting Preparation

On this show, Adam is joined by John Warren of Leupold. Adam and John recorded this conversation on location in Oregon after a full-day on the range at the Leupold Optics Academy (LOA). Many hunters spend the bulk of their time practicing under ideal range conditions but, as we all know, you don't always get the perfect shot opportunity in the field. So, with his Tajikistan ibex hunt looming, Adam wanted to take his marksmanship to the next level. John took Adam through a series of drills and instruction focused on field-applicable shooting positions and the mindset required to make the most of any shot opportunity that might present itself. This is what you'll hear about in this episode. John is a wealth of knowledge and brings a unique perspective to the skills and mindset required to excel under any conditions and circumstances. Regardless of whether you carry a rifle or bow afield, there are key takeaways for all hunters in this episode. www.leupold.com @leupoldoptics @john.warchild

EP 111: Age Defying Fitness with Craig Marker

On this show, Adam is joined by Craig Marker, Ph.D., of StrongFirst. If you're a long-time listener, you'll likely recognize that organization's name as they are, in our opinion, the best source of strength and conditioning research, education, and programming in the world today. Especially as it relates to those training for real-world applications. But this episode is about far more than preparing for the backcountry. The methods, tools and programming covered are applicable to anyone that struggles to find the balance between work, home, and staying fit for whatever goals one may choose to pursue. In short, this episode is about training smarter, not harder. At any age. @strongfirst HIIT vs HIRT Hybrid Power Conditioning Program

EP 110: This Might Be the Episode of the Year

On this show, Adam is joined by Jared Frasier, the Executive Director of 2% For Conservation, an organization that is serving a critical role in today's conservation landscape. This is our longest episode to date…for good reason! Jared is one of the most insightful and outspoken guests we've ever had on the show, and this one's an absolute MUST-LISTEN. Even if that means chopping it up into smaller chunks. Adam and Jared dig into a WIDE range of topics, including (of course) why 2% For Conservation is so crucial to the future of hunting, but beyond that, there are too many subtopics to list. You'll just have to trust that this one's worth every minute. @wildfrasier @2percentforconservation

A chef by trade, after 20 years in the restaurant business, he has finally made the leap into the film and photography field full-time. On this episode, Adam and Connor discuss the evolution of a hunter and how the "why" of hunting changes over the course of one's hunting life, and even, over the course of a season. Through their incredibly different hunting backgrounds, Adam and Connor share how they have arrived at the hunting philosophies that guide their decisions at this point in their lives. @taluscreative

EP 103: Living A Wild Yukon Life with Greg McHale

On this episode, Adam is joined by Greg McHale. Greg is the host of Greg McHale's Wild Yukon, an incredibly well produced show that just debuted on the Sportsman Channel. He is also a past guest (Episode 35) so, if you haven't listened to Greg's original interview, it would be a good idea to check it out, as the subjects discussed on this show, are essentially an extension of his first interview. Greg is a former guide, retired professional athlete, avid bush pilot, and now a TV producer. Needless to say, he's led one hell of an interesting life that has been heavily influenced by the Wild Yukon that he calls home. @gregmchaleswildyukon

EP 102: The Guide Life with Nolan Osborne

On this show, Adam is joined by his good friend, and the star of Toeing the Line (TTL), Nolan Osborne. Anyone that has watched our TTL film will know that Nolan is one hell of a character. But, behind that goofy, and often laconic, demeanor is an incredibly committed and hard-working dude. With zero experience and zero skills, Nolan left his home province of Ontario to chase his dream of becoming a hunting guide. Since making the leap, he has worked throughout BC and the Yukon wrangling and guiding for Stone's sheep, caribou, moose, grizzlies, and mountain goats. He is now living his dream. But the path was not easy. On this episode, Nolan shares the story of how he got to where he is today. @nmo

EP 101: A Systems Approach to Glassing with Chris Denham

On this show, Adam is joined by another repeat guest, Chris Denham. Narrowing down Chris' involvement in the hunting industry is no easy task. He is one of the men behind, and faces of, The Western Hunter TV show. He's the publisher of Western Hunter magazine. A partner in The Outdoorsmans retail business. A partner in Wilderness Athlete…and a partner in The Journal of Mountain Hunting multimedia platform. To say he's a busy guy would be putting it mildly. In this episode, Adam and Chris talk about the story behind The Outdoorsmans (you'll want to hear that one), and then take a deep dive into all things glassing related. Growing up in Arizona, Chris learned at an early age just how important effective glassing techniques, and of course equipment, are in wide open country. Since then, he has applied these techniques and tools across the West with substantial success. If you hunt in areas where glassing is critical to cutting a tag, this one's for you. @csdenham @outdoorsmans @thewesternhunter

EP 100: The Return of Donnie Vincent

Here it is folks! Episode 100, a big milestone for the BTK show. First off, we wanted to extend a heart-felt thank you to everyone that has tuned in and supported the show over the past few years. We couldn't keep doing this without you. So, as a bit of a thank you, we have brought back a guest that many of you have been asking for: Donnie Vincent. Donnie was in B.C. a few weeks back to do some bear hunting, and he was gracious enough to invite Adam up to Arcadia Outfitting, where he was hunting with his good friend, guide-outfitter Ben Stourac, to conduct this interview in person. Fittingly, Donnie was our very first guest for Episode 001 and he's back for Episode 100. The timing of his trip couldn't have worked out better. Sitting on the front porch of a cabin in the mountains of B.C., Donnie and Adam dive into a variety of subjects you will not want to miss. They cover his decision to stop wearing camouflage hunting apparel, bowhunting versus rifle hunting, and then spend the bulk of the show talking about the hunting of large predators, specifically bears and mountain lions. As usual, Donnie does not disappoint. Regardless of your opinions on bear and cat hunting, this is an episode you are going to enjoy. Here's to the next 100 shows! @donnie_vincent @arcadiaoutfitting @sicmanta

EP 99: The Reasons We Hunt with Aaron Hitchins of Rockhouse Motion

On this episode, Adam is joined by Aaron Hitchins, one of the guys at Rockhouse Motion. They are, without a doubt, one of the best in the business when it comes to film and photography production in the hook and bullet and outdoor recreation space. Aaron wears many hats at Rockhouse and he and Adam spend some time talking about what a job like his entails. If you have any interest in what it's like to work in the hunting media business, you'll want to tune in. But perhaps more interestingly, Adam and Aaron went to the same high school AND the same university. They were separated by a few years, so their paths never crossed. Until now. It's a pretty striking fact that two guys, from rural Ontario, in their own roundabout ways, ended up in the hunting media business. But it speaks to the importance of hunting and the outdoors in the Ottawa Valley where they grew up. Adam and Aaron spend some time talking about their upbringing in small-town Eastern Ontario, what the hunting culture was like back home and share some laughs and memories about that idyllic setting. They then dive into a more serious conversation about the justifications we, as a community, put forth for hunting. Aaron and Adam both believe that the reasons we give for hunting and the labels we attach to ourselves and others in the hunting fraternity are not to be taken lightly. This is a great conversation covering many aspects of the hunting lifestyle. @aaronhitchins @rockhousemotion

Adam and Aaron discuss their newest shooting systems, the changes to their educational platform and some new products catered to those that prefer a DIY approach to building and testing their own long-range equipment and components. They also dive into the never-ending debate between those that believe long-range hunting is an ethical practice and those that do not. If you are a bowhunter that looks down on those that choose to hunt with long-range capable equipment, the latter half of this interview will be especially interesting. www.gunwerks.com @gunwerks

94: The Real-Life Most Interesting Man in the World

On this show, Adam is joined by Jack Carr. For our longtime listeners, this is a name you should recognize as it's the pen name of a past guest. Jack is an ex-SEAL, a newly published author, a businessman, and a hunter. Most importantly, he's one hell of a great dude. Jack recently released his debut thriller, The Terminal List, a visceral and intense page-turner that you will not be able to put down. Jack was kind enough to send Adam a copy before it hit bookshelves and there is no doubt that this is not your average novel. Regardless of whether you like to read fiction or not, this is a book you will want to pick-up. There are more than a few themes in the book that will appeal to hunters, fathers and husbands around the globe. In this episode, Jack and Adam have a wide-ranging conversation covering everything from his writing process, tips for those looking to get into outdoor writing, books that inspired him to pursue his dream of becoming an author, and why he thinks reading fiction can be beneficial, especially for aspiring writers. They also dive into some themes from the book that will be of interest to our listeners given the modern digital and social landscape, where anyone can be found by anyone with the motivation to do so. In today's age of outrage, where hunters and firearms enthusiasts are often demonized by those that oppose our lifestyle, Jack has some interesting points on how to keep yourself and your family under the radar. Emory is the host of the BY LAND podcast and runs his own website catered to all things backpacking, which can be found at www.byland.co. On the site, you will find a full list of his podcast episodes and guests as well as some interesting articles and material focused on backpacking, hunting and a whole melting pot of other subjects related to our world. Emory initially appeared on Episode 69 when we discussed his completion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which is roughly 2,000 miles. He finished it in six months. A pretty phenomenal feat without a doubt. Since then, Adam and Emory and have kept in touch, and recently, Emory sent Adam an email that prompted a second appearance on the show. Like most of us, Emory is very passionate about hunting and how hunting is perceived by the non-hunting public, so this episode will feature Emory's perspective on just that topic. 91: A Flatlander's First Sheep Hunt with Robbie Kroger

On this episode, Adam will be joined by Robbie Kroger for his second appearance on the show. 90: The Fundamentals of Marksmanship with Leupold

On this show, we will be talking about marksmanship. As many of you know, a crew from the JOMH traveled down to Oregon to attend the Leupold Optics Academy (LOA) in preparation for the late-season goat hunt the team recently returned from. Joining Adam on the show will be the two gentlemen that hosted and instructed the team at the LOA facility, Michael Baccellieri and John Warren from Leupold, as well as Nolan Osborne who was the main trigger puller at the LOA course. Nolan's perspectives on the topics covered in this show will be especially interesting as he was tasked with taking the lessons learned at the LOA and applying them in the field in what turned out to be very challenging hunting and shooting conditions. Topics covered include the key equipment considerations that inform both rifle and optics decisions, and the skills and abilities required to get the most out of your shooting system. 89: Our Worst Fears Have Been Realized with Gray Thornton

Our Worst Fears Have Been Realized with Gray Thornton On this show, Adam is joined by the President & CEO of the Wild Sheep Foundation (WSF), Gray Thornton. Adam and Gray managed to connect in-person while Gray was recently in BC, and on this episode, they tackle the concerning news out of Alaska about a potentially deadly respiratory pathogen being found and documented in multiple Dall sheep and mountain goats. This is a big issue in the wild sheep conservation world as these respiratory pathogens have been implicated in large-scale die-offs in bighorns in the lower 48, BC, and Alberta. Gray shares the background on these respiratory pathogens, discusses the current situation in Alaska specifically and thinhorn range generally and, perhaps most importantly, brings us up to speed on our options going forward. It should be added that this is a fluid and dynamic situation. The news originally broke on March 13th, and since then more information has been released suggesting this outbreak is more widespread than initially reported. To say both the extent of the problem and the solution to preventing further infection is a moving target, would be putting it mildly. That said, the worst fears of many people involved in wild sheep conservation and wildlife veterinary science have become a reality. If you care about wild sheep, this is a must-listen episode. 088: BC: The Holy Grail of Wild Sheep

On this show, Adam sits down with past guest Chris Barker, and newcomer Kyle Stelter at the 25th Annual Kamloops Convention of the Wild Sheep Society of BC. Both Chris and Kyle are actively involved with the WSSBC and wild sheep conservation in general, and Adam travelled up to Kamloops a couple weeks back to sit down with these two ardent conservationists to discuss the past, present and future of the WSSBC and why regardless of what province or state you call home, the wild sheep of BC need and deserve our support. At the time of this interview (two weeks ago), the news out of Alaska that a deadly respiratory pathogen implicated in large scale die-offs of bighorns in the lower 48 states and BC and Alberta, had not yet been announced. In a sad twist of fate, Adam, Chris and Kyle discussed this very threat and how important it was for the hunting and conservation community to take this risk very seriously. There is now no doubt that Canadian and Alaskan thinhorns need every ounce of support we can provide. Regardless of whether you're a die-hard sheep nut, or simply hope to one day find yourself in sheep country this is a must-listen episode covering some critical topics related to the long-term sustainability of wild sheep in BC and across North America. 087: Central Asian Adventures with Bryan Martin of Asian Mountain Outfitters

On this episode, Adam is joined by Bryan Martin for his second appearance on the podcast. He is the owner and founder of Asian Mountain Outfitters and in the simplest sense, is a hunting consultant. Part guide, part outfitter and part booking agent, he brings an immense amount of knowledge and experience to serving his clients' needs…and this week's show. Bryan has guided and outfitted around the world for nearly 20 years and has personally been on over 100 mountain or backcountry hunts. He is undoubtedly one of the most experienced and accomplished mountain hunters alive today. On Bryan's first episode, we did a worldwide review of the sheep and goat opportunities available to the adventurous hunter, but on this episode, the focus will be on ibex. Bryan will explain his recommended destinations, outline the climactic and logistical realities of hunting in each country, and cover what to expect on the hunt itself if you were to book one of these highly affordable international hunts. Bryan and Adam also spend time discussing the gear and skills required to be successful on these challenging expeditions. And as a final note, what makes these hunts so appealing is not only the reasonable cost and the epic adventure involved, but the fact that in any given year you can easily fit one of these hunts into your schedule. So, if you didn't draw that tag you were hoping for, plans fell through on another mountain hunt, or you have some money burning a hole in your pocket and can't wait years to find an opening in North America, Bryan can get you lined up for a Central Asian hunt on relatively short notice. 086: Is Hunting Conservation?

On this episode, Adam is joined by Mark Hall. At the simplest level Mark is a scientist. He holds a master's degree in environmental science and is a Professional Agrologist and retired Professional Forester. Mark is also a passionate hunter and an even more passionate conservationist and it is on that topic specifically that Adam was interested in bringing Mark on the show. Mark runs his own blog called Hunter Conservationist and writes prolifically about conservation, hunting, social policy, social science and how all these topics weave into what could be called the modern conservation landscape. Mark is not shy about his opinions. He is critical and outspoken about certain aspects of the hunting industry, and in some cases, has ruffled some feathers with what he's said or written. But what makes Mark's writings so important is that they are factually and experientially backed perspectives on the critical matters that impact the conservation space. In today's sociocultural landscape, we need more people to write and think like Mark. We hope you enjoy this thoughtful and enlightening conversation with Mark Hall! 085: What Makes a Great Hunter?

On this episode, Adam is joined by the full crew of guys that were on the JOMH's recent late season goat hunt and film expedition. This podcast was recorded part way through the trip and includes an interesting mix of guys that have diverse perspectives on the question of what makes a great hunter? You'll hear thoughts from Dustin Roe, Nolan Osborne, Dan Watson, Steven Drake, Connor Gabbott and of course Adam. This is an opinionated topic and the group doesn't shy away from tackling the differences between guided and non-guided hunters, high success ratios versus more selective hunting, killing for meat or age or score and many other factors that play into one's "success" as a hunter. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did recording it! Thanks to our guests: @dustinroe @nmo @danwato @stevendrakephoto @taluscreative

082: Telling the Modern Conservation Story with Adam Foss

On this episode, Adam (Janke) is joined by the Fossman himself, Adam Foss. Adam (Foss) was one of the earliest guests we ever featured on the show and a lot has changed since then. He has embarked on a new career path and the hunting media landscape has never been more dynamic. The two Adams spend most of this episode discussing how the "story" of conservation has been told over the past few decades and how we can and should use creativity to tell that story in a more resonant fashion moving forward. Adam (Foss) is doing a lot of exciting work in the conservation space, is very passionate about conservation and the role hunting plays in achieving conservation goals, and given this shared passion, the Adams have a very interesting discussion about how storytelling plays a critical role in keeping both hunting and conservation relevant in today's media landscape. 081: Hunting Is a Complex and Dynamic Pursuit

***WARNING: STRONG AND EXPLICIT LANGUAGE IS USED ON THIS SHOW*** On this episode, we feature a group discussion with nine guys, all of whom were at WSF's Sheep Show last week. We recorded this episode in one of our hotel rooms just before attending the Grand Finale Banquet so, the audio quality is not as high as we would normally produce, but given the size of the group and the microphone system required it's the best we could do. It's not bad, but it's not up to our usual standard. In addition, this podcast contains some strong and explicit language, so if you often listen to podcasts in the vehicle with your kids, this is not one to do so with. We do apologize if anyone takes offense to the language used, but the topics covered are ones we are all, very obviously, passionate about. At least in some circles (like ours), when you get a group of guys together that feel strongly about a given subject, the language is going to get a little colorful at times. That said, the topics covered are very interesting given the very eclectic group of guys huddled around the microphone. The group includes a mix of people from all over Canada and the US, some with lots of hunting experience, others with minimal hunting experience and each with different connections to hunting. We dive into all that and more. What does hunting mean to us on an individual level? How does the act of killing an animal actually feel? How does both the hunting and non-hunting community communicate the reasons we hunt? How do the complexities of conservation fit into the modern media landscape? It's a wide-ranging conversation, but one that is quite interesting given the people involved. On that note specifically, the guys present are: Joshua Skenes, a relatively new hunter and world-renowned chef that owns one of the Top 50 restaurants in the world. Matt Martinez, a long-time hunter and modern renaissance man with experience and success in the business, art and photography world. Mike Pedersen and Kelly Molnar from The Rookie Hunter Podcast. Nolan Osborne, mountain hunting guide, JOMH Assistant Editor and our staff millennial. Peter Gutsche, a BC resident who's been hunting his entire life that's deeply passionate about mountain hunting and conservation. Matt Comment, past guest, East Coaster, experienced mountain hunter and passionate conservationist. Connor Gabbott, past guest, chef, photographer and dedicated mountain hunter.
