080: Be Interesting if You Want People to Be Interested with Bill Roden
On this episode, Adam is joined by Bill Roden. Bill is a branding executive in the outdoors industry and a very passionate outdoorsman in the broadest sense possible. He is also an active member of a whole host of conservation and environmental organizations, including the BHA, RMEF, Pheasants Forever, TRCP, Trout Unlimited, QDMA, and the Sierra Club. Adam and Bill dive into a broad and lengthy discussion that surrounds the state of marketing, advertising and social media in the hunting industry. How are we representing our community on both an individual and brand level? How do the images and messages we put forth, both literal and figurative, impact our future? This is obviously a subject we've covered before, but Bill has spent his entire career immersed in the marketing and advertising business, so he brings a unique and experienced perspective to bear on this topic. If hunting is to remain relevant in the modern media landscape, this is a topic we cannot ignore. Enjoy! Instagram @billroden
079: Inside Backpack Construction with MYSTERY RANCH
On this episode, Adam is joined by Luke Boswell and Ryan Holm from MYSTERY RANCH. Both these guys have been on the show previously, but on this episode we dive into the weeds on pack design and pack construction. From hard goods to soft goods and how every single decision impacts field functionality, you will be amazed at the level of detail applied throughout the pack design and building process. Mystery Ranch has recently launched a number of new packs and patterns, and Luke, Ryan, and Adam also review these new designs and partnerships. If you like to geek out on gear, this is the episode for you! www.mysteryranch.com @mysteryranch
078: Life is a Verb with Eduardo Garcia
On this episode, Adam is joined by Chef Eduardo Garcia. Many of you may have heard of Eduardo via his film, CHARGED: THE EDUARDO GARCIA STORY, released late last year. It is a story of survival, relationships and living life to the fullest. If you have not seen this film, it is a true must watch. Eduardo's story is interesting to say the least. After being electrocuted by 2400 volts of electricity in a freak hunting accident, Eduardo's life was forever changed. The film is, outwardly, about that unfortunate event but more importantly covers Eduardo's life journey before and after the accident. From his paradoxically challenging and charmed life leading up to the accident to the unbelievably difficult and inspirational recovery process he had to endure, this is a story that will impact you. Adam and Eduardo dive into a host of sub-themes covered in the film, and there is no question that this podcast is a heavy and deep exploration of what it means to experience life in the fullest sense, regardless of the cards you are dealt. Eduardo is also a very avid hunter and outdoorsman in general, on top of being a highly accomplished chef and businessman. He has worked with some of the brands we work with, like Mystery Ranch and Schnee's, for quite some time. He is a Brand Ambassador for Mystery Ranch and, in my opinion, they couldn't have asked for a better ambassador to represent their company and our community. 077: Becoming a Hybrid Athlete with Alex Viada
On this episode, Adam is joined by Alex Viada. Alex is the founder and head coach at Complete Human Performance and the author of a book called THE HYBRID ATHLETE. That book and the concepts proposed within that book are some of the most applicable to the mountain or backcountry hunting community we have yet to come across. So, in this podcast Alex, and Adam, dive into the concepts within the Hybrid Athlete framework and dispel many of the myths that surround the concurrent (as in at the same time) utilization of strength and endurance training to achieve a desired outcome in any outdoors pursuit. Regardless of how serious you take your mountain or backcountry hunting preparation in the physical sense, this is worth the listen. Alex gets to the core of what it takes to adequately prepare for extended backcountry hunts, and most importantly, maintain performance, durability and longevity, over a hunt, a hunting season and a lifetime of chasing mountain game. Adam also gets Alex's thoughts on nutrition and hydration, another area where Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. He shares some insights on hydration that you won't want to miss, so you'll want to hang on for that bit that comes at the end of the podcast. We did deal with a bit of a connection issue at times, it's sporadic and doesn't last long when it does come up, but if you do get annoyed just bear down through those parts, as it will be well worth the mild annoyance given Alex's expertise. 076: The BC Grizzly Hunting Ban - What Lies Beyond?
E***WARNING: SOME STRONG LANGUAGE IS USED (SPARINGLY) IN THIS PODCAST*** On this episode, Adam is joined by Chris Barker. Chris appeared on the podcast previously when we did our swap-cast with the Rookie Hunter guys, but he is back to discuss the auspicious news out of BC this week—the outright ban on all grizzly hunting province-wide effective immediately. Until Monday's announcement the grizzly hunt was to continue to be permitted in most areas, albeit with some significant alterations to the regulations, but the recently elected provincial government went back on their word and pushed this decision through, to the surprise of everyone in the hunting and conservation community. This decision went against numerous expert and scientific recommendations that supported the unquestionable sustainability of a continued grizzly hunt. Instead, the government, in an authoritarian move, decided to place a higher value on emotion and manipulated statistics, than science and true conservation. This decision was steered by a dedicated and highly sophisticated propaganda campaign mounted by numerous anti-hunting organizations designed to incite emotional and moral opposition from the uninformed non-hunting public. So, despite the fact this topic has been covered on the show in the past, the landscape has changed drastically. Adam and Chris are going to discuss what lies beyond this auspicious decision. Where do we go from here? What is the way forward? How do we make lemonade out of lemons? Chris has been an avid hunter and committed conservationist for decades and his thoughts, perspectives and insights on this whole subject are sure to be informative and enlightening. 075: Broken Bowhunting Dreams with Frans Diepstraten
On this episode, Adam is joined by Frans Diepstraten. Frans is an experienced mountain hunter that calls Alberta home but on this episode, we'll be spending the bulk of the show talking about a BC mountain goat hunt that Frans recently returned from. For years, Frans has dreamt of testing his skills against a mature, shaggy maned billy, and this past fall, he finally put a plan in place to realize this goal. This hunt took him into some of the nastiest coastal terrain BC offers and he decided to add to the challenge by attempting to take a billy with his longbow. Frans shares the successes, failures and hard lessons learned on what was a true adventure through and through. If you're interested in chasing goats, and what's required mentally, physically, and from a gear perspective, this is a show you will want to tune into. 074: Ultra-Lethal Terminal Arrow Performance with Garrett Schlief of Grizzly Stik
On this episode, Adam is joined by the owner of GRIZZLY STIK, Garrett Schlief. If you're a bowhunter that wants to know how to produce ultra-lethal, bone-busting terminal arrow performance, with both traditional and modern archery equipment, you cannot miss this episode. For years, Grizzly Stik has been at the forefront of changing the way bowhunters think about arrow construction, broadhead design and the critical kinetic variables that consistently result in the quickest, most ethical kills. Around the world, on the largest, most dangerous game, the fundamentals of their system have been proven to outperform virtually everything else available to the modern bowhunter. Every single time. Their arrow systems are trusted by countless guides and PHs whose lives depend on consistent, lethal arrow performance. Garrett is a highly experienced, passionate, and dynamic guy and this episode is absolutely packed with information that will have you re-thinking your arrow selection for next season. And even if you're not a bowhunter, there's more than enough in this one to keep you interested! Web: www.grizzlystik.com Instagram: @grizzlystik Ashby Reports
073: The Ultra Mindset with Travis Macy
On this episode, Adam is joined by ultra-distance athlete extraordinaire Travis Macy. Travis has raced professionally around the world in just about every ultra-endurance discipline you can think of…but this podcast is not about training and endurance. This podcast is about mindset. Travis recently released his first book, THE ULTRA MINDSET, and on this show Adam and Travis dive into the lessons, techniques, and habits Travis has learned and codified over his years competing at the highest level in endurance sports. Whether you're looking to elevate your game in life, career, business, relationships, sports, and yes even hunting, Travis' book is an approachable and entertaining read that serves as invaluable resource for helping you achieve those goals. On top of this, Travis is also a newly obsessed hunter, so Adam and Travis also spend some time talking about the parallels between the endurance world and the hunting world. These two communities and pursuits are far more connected than you may think! With 2018 fast approaching this is a timely podcast for setting your goals and putting plans in motion for next year! 070: Augusts in Africa with Tom McIntyre
On this episode, Adam is joined by Tom McIntyre who, over his long and illustrious career as a writer and author in the hunting field, has had the good fortune to hunt all over the globe. Tom's true passion however, is Africa, and in his latest book Augusts in Africa, he shares the unique perspectives and experiences he's gleaned from hunting on the Dark Continent over the past 40 years. What makes this book so unique, however, is the multi-decade approach Tom takes to telling not only his stories but also the story of hunting and conservation in Africa, and just how much the safari experience has changed over the years. In the pages of this book, you won't find the typically glorified "rich man's African safari" tales. This is a book about a deep love and respect for a land, its people and the game animals that roam its storied savannahs, jungles and veldt. Regardless of your opinion on hunting in Africa, what happens there impacts hunters and the public perception of hunting around the globe. Tom's book and this interview are not to be missed!
069: Hiking 2,000+ Miles in Six Months with Emory Wanger of BY LAND
On this episode, Adam is joined by ex-Marine and dedicated backcountry hunter Emory Wanger. Emory is the founder of BY LAND, a web and podcast platform dedicated to helping people get the most out of their backcountry experiences. Emory recently completed a non-stop traverse of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), a thru-hike that stretches from the US-Mexican border all the way to its northern terminus in Canada, spanning more than 2,000 miles. That's right he hiked virtually non-stop for six straight months. On this episode, Emory shares the invaluable lessons learned during his epic adventure. From gear to mindset, and motivation Emory's thoughts are not to be missed. This is, without any exaggeration, one of the most powerful podcasts you will listen to this year and we are honoured to have had him on the show. Semper Fi Web: www.byland.com Instagram: @by_land
068: How to Live Unscared with Brian Mackenzie
WARNING STRONG LANGUAGE IS USED IN THIS EPISODE*** On this episode Adam is joined by Brian Mackenzie. If you have any experience with CrossFit, you'll likely be familiar with Brian's work as the founder of CrossFit Endurance. But Brian's influence is far from limited to the fire breathing CrossFit community and since moving on to start Power Speed Endurance (PSE) it's obvious he's just getting started. His latest area of emphasis has immense potential for our community and focuses on a topic rarely, if ever, discussed in the hunting world. This is a podcast you won't want to miss. As a human movement and performance expert Brian's true specialty lies in finding unconventional, and often disruptive, solutions to impediments to achieving maximum potential, whatever your goal may be. As someone that has never been shy to tell it likes he sees it, Brian has made a name as a thought provoking and outspoken expert in the training and performance world. This episode however is about so much more than training and you will not want to miss the second half of the discussion that dives into a topic that could literally change how you handle yourself in the backcountry. 065: Living A Paleo(ish) Lifestyle
On this episode, Adam is joined by Kevin Guillen and Courtney Denham from Wilderness Athlete to discuss the recent launch of their new Paleo(ish) line of products. This is not merely a product discussion however. Adam and the Wilderness Athlete crew spend a good portion of the show trying to make sense of the often confusing and misleading BS that pervades the diet, nutrition and supplement business and do their best to take a moderate view of making sound nutritional decisions. Whether you're a nutritional geek or not, this episode will be sure to enlighten and entertain. And be sure to check out the Wilderness Athlete Journal, an invaluable source of nutrition, training and healthy lifestyle content! 064: Ropes & Knots for the Mountain Hunter
On this episode, Adam will be doing a read of an article that was—until recently—exclusively available in the new print edition of The Journal of Mountain Hunting. To view a FREE digital sample of the article please visit the link below or go to www.journalofmountainhunting.com and click on the SHOP tab and scroll down to the VIEW TEASER section at the bottom of the page. The article itself includes lists and illustrations of the equipment and knots discussed in this podcast so be sure to check it out after listening to the show. If you're a dedicated mountain hunter, you can handle yourself in the backcountry. But there is one vastly underappreciated skillset that is lacking in our community: rope handling and knot skills. If you prefer to chase sheep, goats and mule deer in the alpine then at some point in your hunting career, you're likely to find yourself in a position where the tools and skills covered in this podcast (and article) could save your hunt, and maybe even your life. This is a short but highly informative episode featuring a proven system and skillset for handling less than ideal situations in the backcountry. https://journal-of-mountain-hunting.myshopify.com/

On this episode, we bring you our first "swap-cast" that was co-recorded with the guys from The Rookie Hunter podcast. Adam, Mike and Kelly are joined by Chris Barker, a seasoned mountain hunter and passionate conservationist. Chris has, for years, been heavily involved with wild sheep conservation through his work with both the Wild Sheep Foundation and Wild Sheep Society of BC and is a textbook example of what it means to be a true hunter-conservationist. On this round table discussion, the group dives into the subject of how hunting is viewed by the non-hunting public, the misconceptions many non-hunters have about hunting and how we as hunters can help the non-hunting world see why we are so passionate about this complex pursuit.
061: The Never Quit Mindset with George Severence
EOn this episode, Adam is joined by one of the most eclectic and intriguing guests we've ever had on Beyond the Kill: George Severence. From his 20-year military career to his more recent endeavors in the consulting, outfitting and writing fields, George's varied and accomplished career path is a by-product of his commitment to lifelong learning and a dogged inner drive to succeed. This is a wide-ranging conversation that will not disappoint!
060: Brave New World with Shane Mahoney
On this episode, Adam is again joined by Shane Mahoney. In the wake of the news about the grizzly hunting ban here in BC, Adam reached out to Shane to get his thoughts on this landmark decision. Shane draws on his vast international experience to provide his insights, observations and recommendations for how we, as a community, can and should respond in the brave new world that we live in. A world where emotions, morality and ethics have a seat at the table that was historically reserved for a purely scientific view of wildlife and wildlife management. Web: www.conservationvisions.com Instagram: @conservation_visions
059: Manliness in a Modern World
EOn this episode Adam is joined by Dan Doty. Some of you may recognize Dan's name from his time working on the Meateater show but on this episode, we will be focused on Dan's new venture, the EVRYMAN platform which he recently co-founded. For our male listeners, the subjects discussed in this podcast may make you uncomfortable. But that's the whole point. Adam and Dan dive into the complexities, struggles, and challenges of modern manhood. What is expected of the modern man? How do we effectively address and solve the problems we all face in our careers, relationships, and inner-selves? Why do so many modern men battle depression, commit suicide and turn to substance abuse to self-medicate? Why do so many of us escape into the wilderness to find purpose and fulfillment? Dan is not afraid to tackle these questions head on. EVRYMAN represents the culmination of Dan's life's work and experiences working with men, young and old, to find their way in an increasingly confusing and complex world. As uncomfortable as that episode description may make you, this is an incredibly interesting and insightful podcast with one of the most open and honest guys we've ever had on the show! 058: Grizzly Bear Hunting and the Future of Science Based Wildlife Management
As some of you may have heard, earlier this week the new provincial government of BC implemented a ban on the so-called "trophy" hunting of grizzly bears province wide. This ban goes into effect Nov. 30th, 2017. This decision represents an utter and complete disregard for science based wildlife management and should be concerning to every hunter that believes in the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. A system that has saved countless species from the brink of extinction. Virtually every news report clearly outlines the fact that this decision was not based on informed, science based data but on the emotional and uninformed whims of public opinion. An opinion that has been heavily influenced and nefariously misled by the PR campaigns of extremist NGO's that will stop at nothing to see the legal and sustainable hunting of many big game species abolished across Canada and the US. In this podcast, Adam tackles this decision and the underhanded PR tactics of the NGO's that have so effectively swayed public opinion on this matter. If you care about the future of ALL hunting opportunities this is an important episode to listen to regardless of your personal opinions on grizzly bear hunting.
057: The Chinks in Our Armour with Ben O'Brien of YETI
Ben has had the opportunity to travel the globe hunting and documenting the stories behind these incredible experiences in incredible places. He's played a major role in YETI's rise to one of the dominant players in the hunting film space. Ben brings his extensive industry background to bear on this episode's discussion. Adam and Ben tackle some of the commonly held beliefs within the hunting industry and Ben's perspective on why we hunt and how we can and arguably should share those stories with the wider world is not be missed! Renowned for his elk hunting and calling skills, Corey is also one of the hardest working businessmen in the industry and has been a part of numerous successful ventures in both the online and print space. Adam and Corey dive into a variety of topics on this episode. From mindset to work ethic, and of course elk hunting knowledge and strategies this episode is FILLED with pearls of wisdom from Corey's years in the hunting business and elk mountains. We've been trying to line this one up for a long time and could not be more excited to have had Corey on the show. Enjoy!
055: Turning the Tables
On this episode, the tables are turned and Adam sits in the interviewee seat for a change. JOMH subscriber Scott Hill takes control of the microphone and digs into Adam's background and life experiences that led to the launch of the Journal of Mountain Hunting and Beyond the Kill podcast. Topics include Adam's upbringing, career path, daily work habits, preferred gear and the challenges of balancing family life while getting a business off the ground. Scott and Adam first met at Sheep Show earlier this year and have since become good friends and Scott does a phenomenal job of steering this interview. Scott has also written a few articles for the online magazine and is a guy that truly understands the reasons for sharing hunting experiences that "go beyond the kill". We are honored that Scott was willing to set aside the time to conduct this interview! We hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look at the life of our own host!
054: You Are Not a F@$#ing Victim
E***WARNING: SOME STRONG LANGUAGE IS USED IN THIS PODCAST*** On this episode Adam welcomes retired Navy SEAL Andy Stumpf on to the show. Andy is a breath of fresh air in today's day and age. He's not afraid to speak his mind and tackle subjects that most people avoid like the plague. His blog and podcast are worth exploring in-depth and although he covers very little hunting material, the subjects he does devote his attention to are timely and incredibly important. Andy and Adam dive into his time in "The Teams" and the lessons and life experiences he's carried into his new life as an outspoken advocate for thinking before you speak (or post) and taking responsibility for your actions and the things you care about most. Andy is especially vocal about the common thread of "victimization" that seems to afflict so many people that live otherwise sheltered and comfortable lives. His travels to some of the darkest and most dangerous corners of the globe have provided him with a perspective that is not to be ignored. This is the kick in the ass a lot of us need these days! Bert is without a doubt one of the more interesting dudes we've had on this show and he and Adam dig into a HOST of subjects you won't want to miss. From mindset, to overcoming obstacles, breathing the "thin air" found at the fringes of our own abilities and even what it means to be a man in modern society, this is one wide-ranging conversation that could have gone on for hours! As an accomplished athlete, avid hunter, business owner and most importantly father of three, Bert brings an incredible perspective to bear on life and living life to the fullest. In this show, you'll hear the founding story of the company, the growing pains endured as they scaled from a handful of people to a global brand with multiple, purpose-built pack lines, how their design philosophies have evolved over the decades, and Dana's thoughts on why pack fit is a topic that requires your constant attention. 045: What Is Your Crucible?
EOn this episode, we will be talking about crucibles. Tests of one's physical and mental capacities that are severe and transformational. The kind of tests that, upon completion, have changed who we are, how we think and re-define what we're capable of.
