Ep 115New Orleans Music Madness Part 3 - Episode #115
Today's episode is the 3rd of three in a row about New Orleans music. The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) recently did an online tournament where they matched New Orleans music against each other in an NCAA March Madness style bracket they called Music Madness. People were invited to vote and they published the results online, while also linking to the launch of an online exhibit, called New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City. Eli Haddow and Teresa Develin over at THNOC suggested it might be fun if I filled out my own bracket and talked about my selections. I've taken the challenge and covered my initial picks in the last two episodes (#113 and #114). Today, I am joined by the bracket's creator, Mr. Eric Seiferth. Eric and I talk through my picks, his methodology, and more. We dive deep into the music and the people who made it.

Ep 112Creole Italian Sicilians in New Orleans - Episode #112
About This Episode Today's episode is about Sicilian Italians and their contributions to food culture in New Orleans. I'm joined by author and professor Justin Nystrom who wrote a book called Creole Italian; Sicilian Immigrants and the Shaping of New Orleans Food Culture. Nystrom's book was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2019 and helps shine a light on New Orleans food history through the lens of Sicilians. We cover the earliest imports of Sicilian lemons to New Orleans, discuss the French Quarter of the mid 1800s forward, and more. You're sure to see New Orleans food in a different light after this one. Resources Purchase Justin Nystrom's book, Creole Italian; Sicilian Immigrants and the Shaping of New Orleans Food Culture. Ep 111Books about New Orleans - Episode #111
About This Episode Today's episode is devoted to books about New Orleans. If you're caught up on Netflix and want to spend some time reading instead, this one's for you. I recorded this in April 2020. Even if you are listening years from now, this will help you get to know the city better whether you are planning a trip or just wanting to stay connected with New Orleans. We've done 110 episodes. Talked to many authors. What (I don't think I've done) is give you book recommendations. That's what I'll do today. Here's what this is not. It is not a top 10 list. It's not a comprehensive list. It's just a list of very good books about New Orleans, across several categories. For some reason, this topic makes me nervous. Mostly because I am not good about retention and I know a lot of authors! Let's see how it goes. This might be a recurring sub-series or it might be a one and done! Ep 110Spirits to Sanitizer - Episode #110
From spirits to hand sanitizer. The world has changed since our last episode just two weeks ago. Today, we're going to talk about how a couple of local New Orleans businesses are working to help the city respond to the COVID19 pandemic. Join me as I talk with Sal Bivalacqua of Seven Three Distilling and Jess Bourgeois of Lula Restaurant Distillery. These two business owners essentially used their expertise to create a new business in four days, shifting from the manufacture of spirits for drinking to the production of hand sanitizer. We talk alcohol, hand sanitizer, Bourbon and more in this episode of the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast. Resources Check out Seven Three Distilling Company, then be sure to visit when you can. Their website talks about their company name, product offerings, and tour. We'll be doing a Beyond Bourbon Street event there once life returns to normal. Lula Restaurant-Distillery is a unique place to enjoy excellent cuisine with views of a working distillery. We will work with Jess at Lula to host a Beyond Bourbon Street event in the future. Both Lula and Seven Three are currently open for to go purchases. If you are in New Orleans, consider placing an order and supporting them. Ep 107Talking Mardi Gras with Peggy Scott Laborde - Episode #107
Today's show was recorded live at the King Cake Hub in New Orleans. My guest is Peggy Scott Laborde, the Senior Producer at WYES and host of Steppin' Out, the only weekly television show about New Orleans culture and arts. We talk about Mardi Grsas past and present, and answer some audience questions. Beyond Bourbon Street Sponsors Two Chicks Walking Tours If you love New Orleans, you've probably wandered through the Garden District. It is beautiful, but it really comes to life when you have a guide who can tell you about the history and about the people who live there. On a Two Chicks Walking tour you learn about the architecture, the residents and more. You also get to tour Lafayette Cemetery, just across the street from Commander's Palace. Two Chicks keeps their tour groups small and offers a more intimate experience than most. You'll have time to ask your questions and really walk away getting an insider's perspective of the Garden District. Ep 101Louisiana and the Francophonie - Episode #101
Louisiana and the Francophonie Today's episode is about the story behind Louisiana becoming a member of the Francophonie, also known as l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. The Francophonie is comprised of 84 countries, provinces, and one state (Louisiana) whose membership works together to celebrate and preserve French language and culture. To help us learn about the Francophonie and Louisiana's role in it, I'm joined by Scott Tilton and Rudy Bazenet. Scott is a New Orleans native who developed a passion for the French language as a child and led the charge to lobby Louisiana's leadership to apply for admission to the Francophonie. Rudy Bazenet works in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and partnered with Scott on this project. We discuss the road to membership, Louisiana's rich French history, and more.
