Ep 179Celebrating Baseball’s Opening Week With a Rare Triple Play From Loserville Author, Clayton Trutor, The Grillin' Fools, Scott Thomas, and Spring Training Correspondent, Gary Looney

E

Baseball and BBQ Episode #179: Celebrating baseball's opening week with a rare triple play from Loserville author, Clayton Trutor, The Grillin' Fools, Scott Thomas, and Spring Training Correspondent, Gary Looney Clayton Trutor joins us to discuss his latest book, Loserville: How Professional Sports Remade Atlanta-and How Atlanta Remade Professional Sports. It is a fascinating look at Atlanta, Georgia and the four professional sports teams it brought in to try and make them a "Major League Town." Trutor holds a PhD in U.S. history from Boston College. He writes about college football and basketball for SB Nation. Trutor is the Vermont state chairman of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and is a regular contributor to the SABR Biography Project. Loserville is a 10 year project for Trutor, and it was a decade well spent as it is truly fascinating. Scott Thomas is the originator of the Grillin' Fools. After thousands of failures, and quite a few successes, more than two decades later he started a website to show step by step, picture by picture, foolproof grilling instructions so that others don’t have to repeat the mistakes he’s made on the grill. Continually challenging the traditional “rules” and “standards” of BBQ, Scott will grill anything from lettuce and leeks to brisket and bread. He has written feature articles for both St. Louis and Feast Magazines, been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, and appeared in countless television and radio spots in his hometown of St. Louis as well as nationally televised tailgating commercials for Coca-Cola during NASCAR races on NBC and in an episode of Steven Raichlen's, Project Fire. More information on Scott and the Grillin' Fools can be found at https://grillinfools.com/ Gary Looney makes his long awaited return. Jeff first met Gary in 2020 at the Los Angeles Angels spring training camp complex in Arizona, and a friendship quickly developed. Gary appeared with us on episodes 125, 56, and 87. He once again offers great insight into spring training, the just-started baseball season, and how it is to see Shohei Ohtani in person. Having him on has become an annual tradition, and his baseball knowledge is a great addition to any episode. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef, https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, , Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. Jim is a fantastic storyteller and shares many, including stories of his life prior to, during, and after baseball. How did a refusal to give Jim a $5,000 signing bonus change baseball history? Spanning the globe to bring smoking hot BBQ talk with Ben Arnot from Smoking Hot Confessions and exceptional baseball talk with Joe Ceraulo, host of Ceraulo Sports Talk Ben Arnot believes in the power of barbecue. What exactly does that mean? To Ben and his Smoking Hot Confessions team, "It is a power that is unique and mystifying. Old arguments are forgotten and fractured relationships are repaired. At Smoking Hot Confessions, we truly believe that BBQ has the power to heal the world." As host of the podcast, Ceraulo Sports Talk as well as the podcast, Bleav In Queens he gets to convey his knowledge and opinions with sports fanatics everywhere. He starts by telling us that baseball and BBQ are two of his favorite things, which immediately ingratiates himself with his hosts. He has known from an early age that he was either going to make his living playing sports or talking about them. He was a good athlete, but a much better talker, and we are the fortunate recipient. Joe is a tremendous New York Mets fan, as his father has worked in the Mets organization for many years and Joe had the opportunity to work for them as well. He is excited about the World Baseball Classic, but even more excited about the upcoming Major League Baseball season. Ep 175Tom Hammond from Vintage Baseball Reflections and Chad Humphrey from Humphrey's BBQ

Tom Hammond from Vintage Baseball Reflections and Chad Humphrey from Humphrey's BBQ Tom Hammond has loved baseball since he was "knee-high to a grasshopper." His father, who was a Boston Braves fan, introduced him to baseball, and Tom has been a fan ever since. It has taken his love of the game and countless hours to create the website, https://www.vintagebaseballreflections.com/. On this website, there is enough content, some free and some for a fee, to keep a baseball fan entertained for hours, days, weeks, and perhaps even years. Everything from 900+ recorded radio broadcasts of games, interviews with hall-of-fame players, and old-time commercials can be found on the website. If this was not enough to keep Tom busy, he also has a podcast called, This Day in Baseball - The Daily Rewind which is a must-listen for all baseball history buffs. Chad Humphrey saw a need, filled that need, and has become a major part of the barbecue smoker manufacturing community. In the Southwestern foothills of Maine is where you will find Chad and his wife Nicole and their team of craftsmen custom-building Humphrey's Smoker line of barbecue smokers and accessories. They have been repairing, enhancing, and producing BBQ and various other cooking products for the last 14 years. Their love for food, family, and friends, and knowing others share that same feeling, led them to build their line of BBQ smokers, so customers could cook enough food in almost any weather and with ease to bring family and friends together year-round. We often say that everyone has a story, and Chad's is a story of hard work and ingenuity. More information on Chad and Humphrey's BBQ can be found at https://www.humphreysbbq.com/ We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Ep 173Turbo Trusser Inventors and Shark Tank Contestants, Brian Halasinski and Kirk Hyust and Barry Sparks, Author of The Search for the Next Mickey Mantle

Turbo Trusser Inventors and Shark Tank Contestants, Brian Halasinski and Kirk Hyust and Barry Sparks, Author of The Search for the Next Mickey Mantle Brian Halasinski and Kirk Hyust have a passion for inventing. They see a problem and create a solution. Their latest invention turns the difficult process of trussing a chicken into a fun and quick alternative. Trussing a chicken allows it to cook evenly and neatly, but until now it was a very difficult endeavor which called for butcher twine and an advanced degree. Their invention, Turbo Trusser is such a good one that they were chosen to appear on TV's Shark Tank and managed to obtain a deal from one of the sharks. Brian and Kirk take us inside the inventing process and behind the scenes of the hit television show. They currently have one Turbo Trusser for chicken and one for turkey, but as we learned there is much more on the horizon. Barry Sparks has been writing about baseball for more than 50 years. His first article was published in the July 1970 Baseball Digest. He has written for more than 70 national and regional publications, including the Baltimore Sun, Philadelphia Inquirer, Wall Street Journal, National Pastime, Sports Collectors Digest, Sports Parade, Phillies Report, 50 Plus Life, and many others. His latest endeavor is the book, The Search for the Next Mantle: From Tom Tresh to Bryce Harper. Barry takes us on a search which has mostly proven fruitless with the exception of two current players, Mike Trout and Bryce Harper. Some of the players tagged with the daunting task of being the next Mickey Mantle are household names and some are not, but Barry's research provides us with intriguing facts. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. He provides many stories about his 16 years in the Majors, as well as the opportunity to play on the same team as his brother, Alan Benes. Author and newspaper columnist, Bill Chuck steps in quite admirably as co-host, filling in for Leonard who is "out of town on assignment." Andy ended his career with 155 wins, a 3.97 ERA, and 2000 strikeouts; a career worthy of discussion. Galen Powell is not, yet, a huge name in barbecue, but that may soon change. This former member of the United States Military and founder of the Old Grunt BBQ competition team is making his mark on the competition circuit, mastering his catering business, and is soon to release his lineup of barbecue products, including sauces and rubs. He joins us to discuss his love of BBQ and why he wants to turn his passion into a career. Jeff discovered Galen while searching the internet for new and exciting guests, and we are so thankful he did as we learn all about this Arkansas pitmaster. Ep 170Baseball and BBQ Episode #170: Former MLB Pitcher, Turk Wendell with Guest Co-Host, Bill Chuck and an Encore of Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich, Restaurateurs and the Authors of Chasing Smoke

E

Episode #170: Former MLB Pitcher, Turk Wendell and an Encore of Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich, Restaurateurs and the Authors of Chasing Smoke Turk Wendell is a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher who played for 11 seasons. His career kept him in the National League, playing for four teams, the Chicago Cubs, the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Colorado Rockies. Turk is known for some special behaviors (jumping over the foul line on his way to and from the mound, brushing his teeth between innings, slamming the rosin bag into the mound, waving at his center fielder, and a few others) which he gladly discusses and offers explanations for. He is unique, has great stories to tell, and during his playing days he was not afraid to speak his mind regarding other players suspected of using steroids. This angered some ballplayers, but Turk did not back down. Turk loved playing the game and even offered to play his final year for free. Bill Chuck, baseball writer, and researcher, who has a weekly column in the Chicago Sun-Times joins us again and adds his vast knowledge and unique insights to this wonderful discussion. Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich are a wife and husband team who opened their first Middle Eastern-themed restaurant, Honey & Co in London, England in 2012. Additionally, they are the authors of three cookbooks. Their newest London restaurant is Honey & Smoke and their latest cookbook, filled with incredible recipes and beautiful photos is Chasing Smoke: Cooking Over Fire Around The Levant. Leonard ate at Honey and Smoke during his recent London trip and it was exceptional, making this a good time to repeat this segment. We learn what is meant by the Levant and discuss their lives which began in Israel and eventually brought them to London where they own two restaurants and one specialty grocery store. The book takes the reader on a journey which includes their favorite cities as they collected recipes, stories, and the best of culinary culture along the way. If you have been wondering what else is possible to make over a live fire then this is the cookbook for you. Despite the five-hour time difference, Sarit and Itamar managed to find the time to charm us as we spoke of everything, including their special relationship, which works well for them. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Ep 159Baseball and BBQ Episode #159: Go The Distance Authors, Tom Tunison and Gary Kaschak and the Father-Son Team Behind Mantis BBQ, Andy and Spencer Mantis

Baseball and BBQ Episode #159: Go The Distance Authors, Tom Tunison and Gary Kaschak and the Father-Son Team Behind Mantis BBQ, Andy and Spencer Mantis Tom Tunison and Gary Kaschak have joined forces to create the extremely moving and motivational book, Go The Distance. The inspirational story is that of Tom Tunison, Thurman Munson, and a lifelong quest for baseball immortality. Who is Tom Tunison, and why does his life story warrant a book? We answer that and a lot more in this wonderful discussion. Tom's story is not to be missed, and he writes it with assistance from his friend Gary Kaschak who you might recall co-authored the book with Cleon Jones, Coming Home: My Amazing' Life With The New York Mets. "Go the distance" is a term that can be used as a great source of motivation and was one of the things which Ray Kinsella secretly heard in the movie, Field of Dreams. With an homage to that movie, the book even has a foreword written by Dwier Brown, the veteran actor who played John Kinsella in the movie. Oh and let us not forget we also talk about the great New York Yankees catcher, Thurman Munson. Andy Mantis and Spencer Mantis are the father and son team behind the company Mantis BBQ. They have combined their love of barbecue and the delicious sauces they have created into a company with a mission. In 2016 Spencer became ill with a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the kidneys and after 2 and 1/2 years of failed treatments and then debilitating dialysis, it ended with him receiving a kidney from his uncle in 2019. Receiving the kidney has been great, but there are still hurdles they will need to jump, and they are fully aware that there are far fewer kidneys available than there are people in desperate need of one. They have decided to sell their sauce and apparel and donate a portion of the proceeds to The Kidney Project which is dedicated to developing the first-ever surgically implantable artificial kidney. For more information on the Mantis family, their wonderful products, and The Kidney Project go to https://mantisbbq.com/ We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, Magnechef, https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, and Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood. In the top of the sixth inning with the game tied at one, Cardinals third baseman, Scott Rolen hit a pitch off Mets starter Oliver Perez. Leaping over the eight foot-high left field wall, Endy caught the ball with the tip of his glove to rob Rolen of a two-run home run. Chávez then completed the play with quick thinking and a throw which lead to an inning-ending double play. Endy's career is filled with highlights beyond "The Catch" and we discuss his wonderful time as a Major League player and Endy gives us wonderful insights into being a professional ballplayer. He joined us one fine afternoon when Leonard was unable to make it, but Gary Mack, the host of the Mets Musings podcast as well as cohost of the Baseball Talk Radio Show podcast, filled in quite admirably. Colin shares a few stories involving his grandfather, Howard Cosell. He discusses being one half of the public address announcing team at Citifield and how he got the job. Anyone who is interested in this type of career would be wise to listen to Colin as he talks about the three C's (be clear, be concise, be correct) which come directly from the late great New York Yankees PA announcer, Bob Shepard. Colin is also the PA announcer for the NY Riptide of the National Lacrosse League, and in that role, he gets to talk the entire game and playfully antagonize the opposing team. His departing words are to be a good person and be kind to others. More information on Colin Cosell can be found here, https://colincosell.com/home-plate. Yaffi L'Vova is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who just happens to be Jeff's niece. Yaffi has an incredible knowledge of food and how live-fire cooking is found in many cultures. She has created Toddler Test Kitchen as a way to introduce children to unfamiliar foods in a safe way-a way that builds confidence and self-reliance while spending quality time with parents. She has written many cookbooks, two of which are Fun with Food Toddler Cookbook: Activities and Recipes to Play and Eat, Kid Chef Junior Every Day: My First Easy Kids' Cookbook. Yaffi did not have much of a briefing on what we were going to discuss, and yet she responded to every question with knowledgeable and interesting answers. It is good to hear from a new voice who may not be a chef or a pitmaster but has a positive way of looking at food. E

Baseball and BBQ Episode #147 Features Photographer, Ken Goodman, and Author, Neil R. Beller, Jr. Ken Goodman is a freelance photographer specializing in cookbooks, concerts, and food events. More than 50 cookbooks are filled with his mouth-watering photographs. Many of the cookbooks featuring Ken's photos are from pitmasters and chefs we have featured on Baseball and BBQ. There is no doctoring the food which Ken takes pictures of. His skill with a camera is like that of a fine painter with a brush. Prior to photography, Ken spent 20 great years in the restaurant industry as a classically trained chef with a culinary degree from Johnson & Wales University. He still satisfies his cooking vice as a long-time member of the competition barbecue team IQUE, past winners of the Jack Daniel's World Championship of Barbecue. Visit https://www.kengoodmanphotography.com/home for more information. Neil R. Beller, Jr. is a wonderfully funny storyteller. One perk of this podcast is being contacted by individuals we are not yet aware of, but are extremely glad they do. Neil is one such individual. He came on with us to discuss two of his books, The Dish: Stories Spun From The Only Position Player Dumb Enough To Squat Beneath Strangers Who Swing Big Sticks Inches From His Head and Cooking Without A Conscience: Good Eating and Lots of Calories, which he co-authored with Gregory K. Hoffman. Be prepared to laugh hard and out loud. Our conversation is filled with stories most of us can relate to. Visit https://neilbellerauthor.com for more on Neil and his books. Baseball and BBQ Episode #146 Features Pat Geoghegan from Save the Game and Janice Smella from SmellaQue BBQ with Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding of Rogue Cookers Pat Geoghegan loves baseball and wants to save and grow the game. Pat is part of a group that is dedicated to keeping baseball relevant, as it needs to have today's youth involved in playing and watching baseball. Baseball is losing fans, and that means fewer eyes on the game. The website for Save the Game, https://savethegameus.com/ has a petition they need you to sign which will support their argument that baseball is becoming a niche sport and changes are necessary if the game is to continue and grow. The website provides lots of reasons and proves why baseball is losing fans and offers suggestions on how to fix it. Pat is extremely passionate and working on assembling an impressive group of individuals with the same goal of saving the game. Enjoy our baseball discussion and then visit their website, and together we can, hopefully, Save the Game. Janice Smella is back for part two. She loves to cook and is quite good at it. As head cook for the SmellaQue BBQ team, three-time National Canadian BBQ Team of the Year in 2018, 2019, and 2021 she has the opportunity to indulge her passion for smoking and cooking outdoors. Her website poses the question, "So, who is Janice anyways?" The short answer is, "I'm just a gal that likes to cook." The long answer is much more than that. In addition to being a champion pitmaster, she is also an inventor of delicious recipes which can be found on https://smellaque.com/ and https://bushcooking.com/contributor/janice-smella/ She is also a television star, our words, not hers, after successful appearances on season three of Food Network's show, Fire Masters. Janice along with guest co-host, Doug Scheiding loves the science of food and hearing them talk is a unique experience, and we regret there is not more for part three. Baseball and BBQ Episode #145 Features Author, William C. Kashatus, Champion Pitmaster from SmellaQue BBQ, Janice Smella, and Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding William C. Kashatus is a historian, educator, and author of more than 20 books. His latest project is Lefty & Tim: How Steve Carlton and Tim McCarver Became Baseball's Best Battery. The book is an outstanding look at two incredible baseball careers, which saw both men enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame (HOF). Steve Carlton AKA Lefty is in the HOF for his dominating pitching career which included 329 victories, 4,136 strikeouts, six 20-win seasons, and four Cy Young Awards. Tim McCarver, although an outstanding catcher, had a legendary broadcasting career once he hung up his spikes which culminated in his being named the 2012 Ford C. It is a credit to his skills as an author that Kashatus is able to sum up their careers in one book, and as the reader we are quite fortunate he has. This is an interview that baseball fans will truly enjoy. Janice Smella loves to cook, and she is really good at it. Ep 143Baseball and BBQ Episode #143 Features ESPN's, Bob Ryan, Columnist, Bill Chuck, Former MLB Pitcher, Steve Trachsel, and The Grill Dads, Ryan Fey and Mark Anderson

E

What's in a game? Specifically, the MLB game played on May 6, 2000, between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Boston Red Sox which featured a pitchers' duel with Pedro Martinez and Steve Trachsel. We answer that question as we speak with Bob Ryan, Bill Chuck, and Steve Trachsel. Not to be outdone, the second half of the show features an interview with The Grill Dads which will make you laugh and want to cook, all at the same time. Bob Ryan was a spectator at the game and it is his scorecard which appears in the book he co-authored with Bill Chuck, In Scoring Position: 40 Years of a Baseball Love Affair, that sparked the idea of a discussion on this particularly incredible game. Ryan is a member of five Halls of Fame for his sportswriting. In addition, he is a recipient of the Associated Press sports editor's Red Smith Award "For Extended Meritorious Labor in the Art of Sports Journalism," and the PEN Award "For Literary Excellence in Sportswriting." He has also been featured on various ESPN programs for over three decades, including, the current show, Around the Horn. Bill Chuck recently joined us on episode 139 to discuss his latest book, In Scoring Position: 40 Years Of A Baseball Love Affair, which he co-authored with Bob Ryan. That is 139 episodes too late as we wish we had known Bill when we first started the show, almost five years ago. Bill is a baseball writer and researcher and has a weekly column in the Chicago Sun-Times. He feels lucky to have found us, but that feeling goes both ways, as we are so fortunate to have him on again and will have him back as many times as he will say yes. Bill knows baseball and loves the game. Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years. Primarily known for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, it is the May 6, 2000 game he played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park which we discuss. In that game, Trachsel was masterful as he struck out 11 batters in a complete game 1-0 gem; outdueling future Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez who K'd 17 hitters. Steve was a previous guest on episode 127 and discussed his remarkable baseball career, which included the ability to remain on the field and give his teams well-pitched innings, usually throwing more than 200 per year. He takes us into the game as we get to see it played from his perspective. This is a rare treat that was not lost on us or either of our guests, Bob and Bill. Ryan Fey and Mark Anderson are known as The Grill Dads. After winning Guy's Big Project, hosted by Guy Fieri they starred in the prime-time shows, The Grill Dads and Comfort Food Tour on the Food Network. They have also appeared on Beat Bobby Flay, The Wendy Williams Show, The Today Show, and the Howard Stern Wrap-Up Show. Their latest project is the incredibly funny cookbook, The Best Grilling Cookbook Ever Written By Two Idiots. The book has recipes that will expand your grilling repertoire while making food you will thoroughly enjoy. Fey and Mark are two best friends who are both from the world of advertising and love to cook. It is that friendship, love of cooking, creativity, and excellent senses of humor that are making The Grill Dads a brand you will want to know and this cookbook one you will want to own. Ep 142Baseball and BBQ Episode #142: Features Russell Turner of All Star Bar-B-Q, Baseball Rebels and Major League Rebels Authors, Peter Dreir and Robert Elias, and Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding

Baseball and BBQ Episode #142 Features Russell Turner of All-Star Bar-B-Q, Baseball Rebels and Major League Rebels Authors, Peter Dreir and Robert Elias, and Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding Russell Turner opened All-Star Bar-B-Q in Rusk, Texas in 1993 and has served "smoked to perfection" BBQ. In Texas, outstanding barbecue may not be hard to find, but Russell has combined great barbecue with his love of baseball, more specifically, his love of the Houston Astros and serves up great food in a fun atmosphere. Lovers of baseball history, especially that of the Houston Astros that began in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s, will spend lots of time enjoying awesome barbecue while they enjoy the tons of baseball memorabilia throughout the place. Doug Scheiding of Rogue Cookers joins us as guest co-host. Baseball and BBQ are definitely on this menu. Peter Dreir and Robert Elias set out to write one book on some of the players and others associated with baseball who "stood up to racists, war-mongers, and their own greedy owners" as well as including baseball people who "challenged both the baseball establishment and society's status quo." Their research yielded an overwhelming number of fascinating items and thus, one book was not good, but two books were just right. Baseball Rebels: The Players, People, And Social Movements That Shook Up The Game And Changed America and Major League Rebels: Baseball Battles Over Workers' Rights And American Empire are two books filled with incredible baseball history. Dreier and Elias are distinguished professors by day, and we feel they earned their PhD's writing two outstanding books. Ep 141Baseball and BBQ Episode #141: Features Sports Journalist and Author, Terence Moore and NFL Network Insider, Ian Rapoport

Baseball and BBQ Episode #141 Features Sports Journalist and Author, Terence Moore and NFL Network Insider, Ian Rapoport Terence Moore is the self-proclaimed "Hank Aaron Whisperer" and that fact is undeniable after reading his new book, The Real Hank Aaron: An Intimate Look at the Life and Legacy of the Home Run King. The book provides an in-depth look at Aaron, the man, and not just Arron, the baseball superstar. Terence discusses the book, which includes Aaron's admiration for Jackie Robinson and his true thoughts on Barry Bonds and the steroids era. Terence has spent more than 40 years as an award-winning sports journalist. He has covered more than 30 Super Bowls, numerous World Series, Olympic Games, NBA Finals, Final Fours, Indianapolis 500's, championship fights, major golf tournaments, and other sporting events. He has worked extremely hard to achieve his success and like Aaron he has had to deal with years of racism but has come out on top. To get an autograph copy of the book, you can go to http://www.therealhankaaron.com/ On this website, click "contact me" at the top, and then in the "comment" section, add your address and who you wish Terence to autograph the book to. Ian Rapoport has been with the NFL Network since April 2012 and in July 2013 he became the NFL Network's Insider. Prior to that, he served as a New England Patriots beat reporter for the Boston Herald. Yes, all of that is football related and this is the Baseball and BBQ podcast; so why is he on? Funny, you should ask. Doug Scheiding, who joins us on this episode, has had barbecue-related interactions with Ian. Rapoport loves barbecue and has a smoker which has traveled with him as he has relocated to various cities throughout his career. If that is not enough of a reason to have him on then perhaps his love for the New York Mets makes another strong argument for this appearance. Ian was fortunate to be asked by the New York Mets to throw out the first pitch in June 2021, and his wife served as his battery-mate. Between interviews, Leonard tries his hand at a baseball rant. We recommend you go to https://bbqbuddha.com/ where you will find award-winning sauces, rubs, and cookbooks and, until July 16, 2022 when you enter the promo code, BBQALLSTAR15 at checkout you will receive a 15% savings on your order. Ep 138Baseball and BBQ Episode #138: Features a Rare Triple Play with MLB Hall of Fame Pitcher, Jim Kaat, Barbecue News Magazine Publisher, Kell Phelps, and Podaster, Gary Mack

Episode #138 Features a Rare Triple Play with Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher, Jim Kaat, Barbecue News Magazine Publisher, Kell Phelps, and Podcaster, Gary Mack Jim Kaat writes in his new autobiography, Good As Gold: My Eight Decades In Baseball, "I am one of the few people alive who can truly say that virtually every dollar I have earned as an adult has been because of my involvement in the game of baseball, a game I have loved since 1945 when I was about seven years old." The eight decades Jim writes about are filled with incredible stories of the many people he has been associated with in his 25 years as a player, his time as a pitching coach, and his many years as a broadcaster. One such story is how Jim had the chance to be a "bonus baby" but his father knew best and helped Jim make a difficult decision that positively shaped his future. Jim was a left-handed pitcher for the Washington Senators / Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was a three-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner for 16 seasons in a row. He was Pete Rose's chosen pitching coach when Rose became the Cincinnati Reds manager. Following coaching, he took up residence in various baseball broadcast booths, where he honed his craft and became a multi-Emmy-winning broadcaster. His career, which is far from over, is culminating with his long-overdue election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Kell Phelps is the publisher of the Barbecue News Magazine and recently acquired the National Barbecue Association (NBBQA). Kell is someone we should have had on the show a long time ago, and what better way to begin the conversation with an apology for waiting this long to have him on. It was definitely worth the wait as we discuss his significant role in the barbecue industry. Have questions on what the NBBQA is and how it might help you? Kell answers that. Kell talks all about the wonderful things which being a part of the barbecue community offers. If you have an interest in barbecue in any form, then you need to subscribe to Barbecue News Magazine. Kell is an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and we discuss both baseball and barbecue. Gary Mack is the long-time host of the Mets Musings podcast, as well as co-hosting The Baseball Talk Radio Show with Rich Baxter. He knows baseball very well and like any true baseball fan he is not without his opinions. The All-Star game is coming up and fan voting has begun. Join us for a lively discussion on our ballots. Ep 136Baseball and BBQ Episode #136: Authors, John Coulson and John Sherdel and a return visit with Champion Pitmaster, Doug Scheiding

Episode #136 features Authors, John Coulson and John Sherdel and a return visit with Champion Pitmaster, Doug Scheiding John Coulson is the author of Wee Willie Sherdel: The Cardinals' Winningest Left-Hander. John Sherdel is Wee Willie's grandson and an important contributor to the book. Wee Willie performed many great feats on the diamond. Since his retirement in 1932, he remains the Redbirds’ winningest left-hander and fourth all-time winner. Willie also pitched the third-most games and the fourth-most innings. He was also an outstanding hitter. Among Cardinals' pitchers, Sherdel has the fourth-most career home runs and the fifth-best batting average for his .337 in 1923. His contemporaries included over 90 Hall of Famers and some of the greatest players of all-time including Ruth, Gehrig, Ty Cobb, and Rogers Hornsby. Author Coulson and grandson Shredel are determined to have Wee Willie enshrined in the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame, and we agree that is where he deserves to be. Doug Scheiding is back for exceptional barbecue and baseball talk. As a champion pitmaster, Doug knows what it takes to prepare for competition winning barbecue and he gives excellent insight into his winning formula. Have you heard about cooking a steak using the reverse sear method, but have questions on how it is done and why it is the better steak cooking method? Doug provides a very thorough explanation. We recorded the episode on the 10-year anniversary of former MLB pitcher, Johan Santana's no-hitter, thrown for the New York Mets; the first in what was, then, their 50-year history. Doug was at that game, and tells what he experienced being in the stands for the momentous event. Some Father's Day gift ideas are included as we remind everyone of some great companies with outstanding products. Ep 135Baseball and BBQ Episode #135: Former MLB Pitcher, Glendon Rusch, Hog Farmer, Tank Jackson, Pitmaster, Tuffy Stone, and a Special Visit and Offer for Our Listeners from Ray Sheehan of BBQ Buddha

Episode #135 features Former MLB Pitcher, Glendon Rusch, Hog Farmer, Tank Jackson, Pitmaster, Tuffy Stone, and a Special Visit and Offer for Our Listeners from Ray Sheehan of BBQ Buddha Glendon Rusch is a left-handed former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies. He also has a reputation, apparently well deserved, of having been one of the nicest people in baseball. In September 2006 he was diagnosed with a life-threatening blood clot in his lung, but he was able to mount a comeback and pitch again. Legendary manager and two-time Baseball and BBQ podcast guest, Bobby Valentine once described Glendon as one of the gutsiest pitchers he ever coached. In 2000, he won 11 games for the New York Mets, helping them get to the World Series. Glendon is a huge fan of the music group, Pearl Jam, and did quite well in our name that Pearl Jam song game. Tank Jackson raises hogs used by some of the finest restaurants and Tuffy Stone is an award-winning pitmaster, television personality, and restaurateur. We were fortunate to meet them at Pig Beach BBQ in Queens, New York during the Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit. Each interview is short but comes with their assurances they will join us again. Although the conversations were brief, we had the opportunity to gather some barbecue tips and get a small glimpse into each of their lives and enjoy their delightful personalities, which were on display all day for the many people who paid to be there and experience each of the cooks' signature dishes. We are extremely fortunate to be joined by Ray Sheehan, founder of BBQ Buddha, known for its multi-award-winning, all-natural barbecue sauces and spice blends as well as being the author of two cookbooks, Award-Winning BBQ Sauces and How to Use Them: The Secret Ingredient to Next-Level Smoking and Big Green Egg Basics from a Master Barbecuer. Ray's next great adventure is the soon-to-be-opened restaurant, Ray's Roadside Kitchen in Cream Ridge, New Jersey. Ray has an exciting Father's Day 2022 offer for our listeners as he announces an exclusive promo code to receive very nice savings on his sauces, rubs, and cookbooks which are found at https://bbqbuddha.com/ We recommend you go to baseballbbq.com https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces and Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves. Ep 134Baseball and BBQ Episode #134: Author, John Rosengren and Pitmasters, Chris Lilly, Grant Pinkerton, and John Wheeler

Baseball and BBQ Episode #134 features author, John Rosengren and pitmasters, Chris Lilly, Grant Pinkerton, and John Wheeler John Rosengren is an award-winning journalist and author. His latest book is Classic Baseball: Timeless Tales, Immortal Moments. His feature articles, profiles, and essays have appeared in more than 100 publications. The following is taken from the "About John" section of his website, https://www.johnrosengren.net/ "I once interviewed a woman shot in the head by hijackers and left for dead on the tarmac. I raced my bike against Greg LeMond in South Africa (and beat him). I played a tennis match against the world’s top-ranked wheelchair tennis player (and lost). I channeled a 330-pound Samoan, a retired NFL nose tackle who is gay (Esera Tuaolo, for his memoir). I played softball on snowshoes in the summertime (wood chips spread across the infield). I rapped a base hit off former Twins pitcher Rick Aguilera. I listened to a nurse tell me the story of prying a shotgun shell out of Ernest Hemingway’s hand when he was intent on killing himself. I profiled a woman who is a Roman Catholic priest. I attended a powwow with LGBTQ Native Americans. I interviewed a mortician in the room where she embalmed my father. I talked to a 15-year-old boy in his hospital room after he tried to stop a school shooter." The preceding is why we went into this interview knowing we would never be able to discuss all of his accomplishments in one sitting, so the first thing we did was extend an invitation to have him back. Chris Lilly, Grant Pinkerton, and John Wheeler are three outstanding pitmasters who have spent years honing their craft and earning well-deserved reputations for being among the best. We were fortunate to meet them at Pig Beach BBQ in Queens, NY during the Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit. Each interview is relatively short, but comes with their assurances that they will join us again.
