From Bangor to Back Bay, New Englanders endure in baseball matters. And life. The team’s history has intersected with the history of Boston and well beyond it, through the Curse of the Bambino, the military service of Ted Williams during World War II, and the Boston Marathon bombing. The Fenway Effect chronicles these stories and others that have built the incredible saga of the Boston Red Sox. How did Cheers depict the passion of Boston’s sports fans? Why is Narragansett beer so important to New England? What did the Boston press really think about Red Sox owner Harry Frazee selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees? Even Yankees fans will tip their caps to the rich impact of the Red Sox on music, movies, branding, broadcasting, and more. Plus, there’s a chapter focusing on the oral history of Red Sox fans, some of whom share anecdotes that are funny, insightful, and heartwarming." Ep 241Author, Mitchell Nathanson Discusses His Newest Book, Under Jackie's Shadow and Chef Ray Sheehan Presents A Special Father's Day Gift Guide
Author, Mitchell Nathanson Discusses His Newest Book, Under Jackie's Shadow and Chef Ray Sheehan Presents A Special Father's Day Gift Guide Mitchell Nathanson is a Professor of Law at Villanova University and the author of numerous books and articles on baseball. He is a two-time winner of the McFarland-SABR Award, presented in recognition of the best historical or biographical baseball articles of the year. He returns to the show to discuss his newest book, Under Jackie's Shadow: Voices of Black Minor Leaguers Baseball Left Behind. "Under Jackie’s Shadow is a portal to the hidden world of Minor League baseball in the era just after Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. It features "oral histories of Black minor league baseball players who played in the post-Jackie Robinson era, from the 1960s to the mid-1970s, who were figuratively and literally left behind as both baseball and the country claimed a newfound racial progressiveness." "The players’ experiences in baseball’s Minor Leagues in the 1960s and 1970s do not comport with the largely celebratory tales the leagues like to tell about themselves. The Black Minor League players remained largely invisible men—most of whom couldn’t be named by even the most devoted baseball followers. Based on Mitchell Nathanson’s interviews, Under Jackie’s Shadow uses the players’ own words to tell the unvarnished story of what it was like to be a Black baseball player navigating the wilds of professional baseball’s Minor Leagues following the integration of the Major Leagues. Harrowing, beautiful, and maddening, these stories are vital to our understanding of race not only in baseball but in the United States as a whole." Ray Sheehan also known as Chef Ray is an award winning maker of barbecue sauces and rubs as well as an award winning cookbook author. He has been a frequent guest and co-host on this show and presents a special Father's Day Gift Guide. Ep 214Former New York Yankees Media Relations Executive, Rick Cerrone and Chef Ray Sheehan with a Barbecue Holiday Gift Giving Guide Plus Jeff's Two Cents
Former New York Yankees Media Relations Executive, Rick Cerrone and Chef Ray Sheehan with a Barbecue Holiday Gift Giving Guide Plus Jeff's Two Cents Rick Cerrone was recently inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame. It was a well deserved honor for a man who has been a part of the baseball scene in New York and elsewhere for almost 50 years. He is quite humble as he starts off the interview by crediting his high school guidance counselor for starting him on his career path, but without his talents and strong work ethic this career does not happen; beginning in 1977 when he founded Baseball Magazine. Rick's many jobs in baseball have included working on the public relations staffs for two Baseball Commissioners, co-hosted the radio show, The Sports Connection, and worked as Public Relations VP for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rick finally achieved his dream job when he became the New York Yankees public relations executive, a job he held for 11 seasons while working for George Steinbrenner and a team that won four world championships during that time. The preceding is only a part of his amazing career and when the interview ends you will find yourself wanting more. Ray Sheehan also known as Chef Ray is an award winning maker of barbecue sauces and rubs as well as an award winning cookbook author. He has been a frequent guest and co-host on Baseball and BBQ and we are fortunate he has done extensive research as he presents his barbecue holiday gift giving guide. Bob LeMoine loves baseball and this love began at a very early age. He would lay in bed at night, listening to his small transistor radio and cheer on the Boston Red Sox. Bob is fascinated with Boston and 19th-century baseball history. His latest project is When the Babe Went Back to Boston: Babe Ruth, Judge Fuchs and the Hapless Braves of 1935. It is a fascinating look at Babe Ruth after his time with the New York Yankees ended and he tried to pursue a a second act career as a manager as well as all else from that time until his death. Babe Ruth is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player and this book provides much more interesting information on his life. Dave Raymond aka Sweet Baby Ray has many years of experience in the barbecue industry. In 1982, Dave and his lifelong friend Mike O’Brien used the sauce which Dave's brother Larry developed to build Sweet Baby Ray's, which is now the best-selling barbecue sauce in the country. They sold the business in 2001. In 2005 Dave partnered with his nephew, Larry's son Duce and they opened Sweet Baby Ray's Restaurant. Now a multifaceted business operation, Sweet Baby Ray’s boasts two restaurants and two premier catering companies. Based in Brooklyn, NY, Anthony is taking his love for barbecue and with many marketing tools, including having barbecue popups, he is bringing his unique style to the New York and surrounding areas masses. We met Anthony at Jimmy Carbone's Pig Island event and were privileged to try his take on Cheeto's Pie. Anthony is a fellow New York Mets fan and so we commiserated on the lackluster season. For more on Anthony and Smoke Sweats BBQ go to https://www.smokesweats.com/ Bret Lunsford is the executive chef of Blue Smoke, a New York restaurant which offers outstanding barbecue. Up until recently, Blue Smoke also had a location at Cit Field which is home to the New York Mets. We were surprised to learn that Bret is a relative of Baseball Hall of Fame member, Ralph Kiner who did not play for the Mets, but was an intricate part of their broadcasting team for more than 50 years. Bret at one time was planning on becoming a school music teacher; earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Southern Mississippi. The food industry is lucky he followed his greater passion and after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Bret eventually made his way to Blue Smoke. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.
