Ep 68E67: Renee Brinkerhoff - Rallying for a cause

Seven years ago, when Colorado-based mother and wife Renee Brinkerhoff decided to completely change her life to become both a racer and global philanthropist, she never envisioned her efforts could also change the lives of women and children worldwide. However, since 2013, her race team Valkyrie Racing and foundation Valkyrie Gives have earned global recognition for her personal quest to end the plight of human trafficking on an international scale. In 2020 she was set to conquer the ultimate challenge as the first to ever bring a vintage Porsche to Antarctica and drive 356 miles on ice, as the conclusion of a 7-continent journey that will have spanned nearly 20,000 miles around the globe to bring awareness to and raise funds for the cause. According to Renee, the forthcoming winter expedition will be a trifecta of sorts, with an end goal of raising $1 million through her ‘Project 356 World Rally Tour’ – an effort alone that has already secured more than $200,000 toward her goal. “Antarctica will be the most beautiful, yet dangerous terrain we’ve yet to encounter with ourselves and our vintage car,” she explained. “While the weather remains one of the largest hurdles, it’s going to be our technical mission to lightweight the car and stay on track in a carbon positive way,” said Renee. “We’ve got a team that has already earned a world record in polar exploration, and we intend to set a few of our own along the way!” Joining Renee as her navigator will be Jason de Carteret, a British polar explorer who has held both skiing and vehicle world records for polar exploration. “Our upcoming fete will be an amazing crescendo in the epic journey Renee has already created on a global scale,” said Jason. “There is an enormous educational lesson to be learned in all she’s doing, let alone the history and heritage that her car provides.”Renee’s Porsche 356 is currently being prepped in the UK and will join the expedition team in Chile in late November, before boarding a cargo plane to arrive in Antarctica. The last leg of the expedition also has the potential of setting a world record for rallying a vintage car on all seven continents, as well as a land speed record within Antarctica.RENEE’S ROLEFor a small woman, Renee has created an immense voice for a deeply rooted exploitation of human beings. Her involvement has not only broadened awareness, but she personally brings much needed funds, support, education and supplies to pre-vetted shelters she meets with globally that house women and children who are both survivors and victims. Personal meetings and on-site involvement have already taken place with organizations in remote areas within China, Mongolia, Peru and Kenya. Each contribution begins a means to educate and support those that have survived human trafficking while taking instrumental steps to foster awareness that can help to end the global issue completely. Additionally, this past January, Renee was selected by the U.S. NGO Exodus Road to be part of a carefully vetted and selected group of volunteer operatives to head to Asia, where she embarked on an anti-human trafficking effort to rescue and restore victims, including children who are sex trafficked. The investigation was part of an evidence gathering effort to build stronger cases for successful rescue missions for police on a global basis. Within a team consisting of former Army Special Forces and current members of undercover US law enforcement, she was able to secretly meet with children and prostitutes to gain insight leading to imminent arrests -- their overall efforts will be supporting the work of nationals on the ground fighting sex trafficking with local police partners. BLENDING RACING AND SOCIAL ISSUESAfter beginning her rally career at the age of 56in 2012, Renee was determined to take on her own self-imposed challenge of completing six endurance races in seven continents and utilize the world stage of endurance racing as a channel to support charitable efforts. By extending her own personal philanthropic mission on a global level through her dedication to fight child trafficking, a cause she has championed throughout her racing involvement, Renee has spoken at orphanages, engaged hundreds of foreign children and provided education to keep children safe. The charitable effort grew by balancing her rally car competition, Valkyrie Racing, with her own non-profit ‘Valkyrie Gives.’ Her determination sought donations and direct financial support to counter child exploitation and human trafficking in poorer parts of the world – and her rallying became a visual means to grow the awareness. Individual fundraising programs to date have raised more than $200,000 and Renee will be continuing to distribute those funds in the form of practical gifts and educational support. With a mission to raise $1 million through ‘Project 356 World Rally Tour’ efforts, Valkyrie Gives will be contributing 100% of all dollars raised to the cause.Through her own personal dr

Ep 63E62: Pamela Stambaugh - It Takes a Village

In Pamela's Own words:WHO AM I?Effective leadership and extraordinary implementation = Breakaway Success. Don't settle for less. The challenges facing leaders today require a Behavioral Change Master as a strategic "reality check" partner. That's one contribution I make to senior executives and their teams. Accountability for predicted results comes from aligning your values and your goals as a team; raising the performance bar means engendering mutual trust, which happens ONLY when people feel safe. The role of leader involves engendering mutual trust through an effective, reliable communication cadence that you set and keep. How are you doing? As your strategic partner, we look together at context (which is defining) and content. Distinguishing and addressing these separately is CRITICAL to effectiveness. In 20 years I have given feedback to over 3,000 senior executives to help them recognize and be responsible for the context they set and keep for their organization.🔶 POST-COVID, WHAT IS NEEDED NOW?As your strategic partner, together we drive execution excellence through your people, some of whom aren't returning to the office. What about your remote workers? Let's look together at their suitability for working remotely, and do the same for their virtual managers. The assessment of suitability for remote work is quantifiable and ridiculously cost-effective. Let's start there and see what works.🔶 QUESTION FOR YOU:Successful culture and competitive advantage are achieved by having the right people on the bus, developing that A- Team to trust and value superior processes and systems, and providing strong leadership at the top. How are you doing?🔶 WHAT I DO FOR MY CLIENTSFeedback is the breakfast of champions. Leaders who work with me tell me they are more clear, more effective, and freed up to be their authentic selves while generating championship teams. Clarity of direction + employee engagement + effective execution + Breakaway Success. Wearing many hats in Hollywood prepared Marci with the skills and experience to open and run her own video production studio, which she now operates in Redondo Beach, just a short distance from her home and family in Redondo Beach – and more importantly, 5 blocks to the ocean which she uses as her inspiration, as quoted in her passage, “Being in the ocean is like diving into creativity. I get inspired feel invigorated, and ideas flow. The ocean is where I write my client scripts in my head, long before my hands ever reach a computer keyboard.” The vibe of her company is as important to her as the quality of videos she produces. Marci’s board meetings are offered in the surf line-up, and everyone is welcome. Marci balances business with family and philanthropy. She sits on the board for non-profit organization Waterfront Education, is a Public Arts Commissioner and Ambassador to the Redondo beach Chamber of Commerce. Ep 51E50: Ryan Boyle- When the lights go out

In Ryan's Boyle's own words:In October of 2003, a black cloud seemed to hang over our family, which all culminated on a wet, fall day when I was hit and dragged by a pickup truck while riding a Big Wheel type toy at a friend’s birthday party. The medics who arrived on the scene were ready to pronounce me dead due to my horrendous injuries. The impact of the truck was directly to the back of my head; immediately I went into a coma.Miraculously I did make it to the hospital and through emergency brain surgery where part of my cerebellum was removed, along with a large portion of the back of my skull. I also suffered many broken bones and other such injuries. At the age of 10, I had to learn how to breathe, swallow, talk, eat, stand, sit, walk—everything—all over again. We take for granted that as babies we learn to do all of these things. It’s seemingly no big deal, but it was a huge deal for me. The fact is that medical experts know very little about how the brain works, which means they aren’t very good at knowing how to deal with a traumatic injury to it. The first doctor that saw me once I awakened from my coma quoted, "I am optimistic that Ryan will gain enough strength in his right hand to type." After this grim prognosis, my battle began. When the Lights Go Out tells about a young man’s desperate struggle to return to a regular life after sustaining a traumatic brain injury at the age of nine; it is both inspirational and moving. The fact that I wrote my first book as a freshmen honor student at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, Connecticut is not only an amazing accomplishment in itself, but also one never thought possible by all of the experts. When the Lights Go Out will take you from my catastrophic injuries and the battle against death to my continuing success story of recovery, now in Georgia. I not only explain the obvious physical challenges that I faced, but also the emotional and psychological challenges which, at times, were my greatest obstacles. I cover the critical role of faith and spirituality that gave me hope and strength to overcome tremendous challenges. I touch upon the healing power of friends, the inherent goodness of people to help when they are needed the most, and the importance of the support and love of my parents and brother as the foundation through all of my recovery. This inspirational story is a living example of how a horrific event can be overcome by measures of strength, determination and faith that you never knew you had within.Learn more about Ryan and his journey at:www.ryanboyle.me/https://www.amazon.com/When-Lights-Go-Out-Second/dp/144976830X Please leave a review or send us a Voice note letting us know what you enjoyed at:Back2Basics reconnecting to the essence of YOU (podpage.com)Follow us on IG and FB @Back2BasicsPodcast

Ep 37E37: Rebecca Reed - Masterminding Life

In Rebecca's Own words:Over the last 7 years I've worked with thousands of teachers, administrators, and students across the US, first as an elementary teacher and STEM specialist, and then as a developer of teachers and teacher leaders. In 2016 I left the classroom to join STEM education leader Project Lead The Way, driving large-scale program developments for teacher professional development, training delivery, and curriculum advisory.During this time I discovered an unseen, but very real intersection where education, innovation, and the real-world collide. It's a space of incredible possibility and urgency that will define the next generation of education. I help innovative educators, entrepreneurs, and orgs build and thrive in this intersection. In 2019 I founded The Teacher Mastermind, a virtual network and community that connects like-minded, innovative educators and entrepreneurs with each other for collaborative inspiration, co-creation, and peer coaching. Also in 2019, I launched the intersectional podcast "Off the Assembly Line" which shares possibility-sparking conversations with the innovative educators and entrepreneurs bringing the future to education, one disruption at a time. If you found your head nodding with anything Rebecca and Leticia discussed, you should connect with her!🤝Conversation or Coaching: How can I support your work or help you identify the impact you want to make?🚀Consulting or Co-Creation: Are you developing a program, product, or strategy that lives in the education-innovation intersection?
