Ask Dr. Doreen - Positive Reinforcement - Potty Training - Autism Success Stories

Autism Expert and pioneer in the field of Autism, Psychologist and BCBA, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh is answering viewer questions! Tune in and check it out! Recorded Live 10am PT August 9th, 2022 #AutismSpectrumDisorder #Autism #autismpodcast 5:13 Helping to Learn Conversational Speech Skills My son is almost 4 years old, at 2 he got diagnosed with autism. We've been doing speech therapy and ABA for a year but I don't see much improvement. He is able to talk but his speech is not clear. 9:42 My problem is a 3.5 yr old minimally verbal for whom I cannot seem to find any kinds of reinforcers. He runs from one thing to another, climbs on furniture, throws things around, breaks stuff, doesn't stop even long enough to show interest in anything new for more than a few seconds, or favored previously. I've tried snacks, sips of Cola (which he loves), new toys, he doesn't like to be touched so no tickles and much more. If I can get his attention to notice something, the minute I show interest, he abandons it. It's as if he knows I'm trying to 'bribe' him. I'm at my wits end so any advice? 20:33 My son is 16 on aripriprazole has been for 3 years. How long do we keep on medication. 23:58 My son w/ ASD will be 5 in Oct. He's progressed from single words at 3rd bday to talking in complete sentences- even complex (e.g., "and, if, so, because, but, while" etc. many times a day). 30:10 What about when ABA is just sitting at a desk for hours! What could I ask my ABA provider to do so he isn't just sitting at a table? 32:40 My developmental pediatrician made referrals for multiple services ABA, music therapy, OT, Speech therapy and so forth but the problem we are facing is that the insurance has a waiting list and the we have to wait to provide services. I am almost positive that we may have to pay all his services out of pocket. Do you have any information where we don't have to wait or pay out of pocket? 36:55 Potty Training: Teaching the Importance of Wiping My son whines and demands to wash his hands after a BM. Despite knowing what to do about wiping himself; He is adamant to not do it and just directly wash his hands after a BM. I am at a lost on how to make him understand that wiping himself is needed. Thank you in advance. 38:05 Question for both Dr. Doreen and Shannon: What are the common things in autism success stories? This would be a great motivation for us parents :) 48:13 I have found that my sons teachers as well as ABA provider don't push my son because they think he can't do certain things but in reality he can and he is bored with what they work on with him! 49:37 Our son was doing really good for a long while doing aba. He would match objects with generic pictures. This term he's all of a sudden completely gone. Matches colors as if he was color blind. 57:05 How do I get my 3 year old started in ABA? 58:21 Where can I find the link to the free RBT training? https://autismpartnershipfoundation.org/product/rbt/ https://www.autismnetwork.com/category/ask-dr-doreen/ https://www.tiktok.com/@askdrdoreen? https://www.instagram.com/askdrdoreen/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWSL-fAgvt3qo5yGwP4SUUQ Shannon Penrod's book is out now! Ask Dr. Doreen - Speech - ABA - Haircuts

Autism Expert and pioneer in the field of Autism, Psychologist and BCBA, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh is answering viewer questions! Today, Dr. Doreen answers questions about Speech, ABA, Haircuts and much more! Tune in and check it out! Recorded Live 10am PT August 2nd, 2022 #AutismSpectrumDisorder #Autism #autismpodcast 3:49 Is increase in babbling after intensive ABA therapy is a good or bad thing? I want to update and ask you some questions. My son right now, 3 years 6 months old. Has been in ABA since 3 years old, first 20 hours per week and we increasing per month. Right now, he is in ABA therapy for 50 hours per week (in 3 different centers in Jakarta) and 2 hours per week sensory integration and occupational therapy. After very intensive ABA this 1 month, he increasing eye contact, tacting, labelling, manding, some intraverbals (answering questions). But, still very little spontaneous sentence or comment, and not yet conversational sentence. He is also increasing in babbling, random speech (not functional and also functional words). My questions, what can we expect from the therapy? Can very lot of ABA therapy cause overdose? Is increase in babbling (between functional words) after intensive ABA therapy is a good or bad things? How long does intensive ABA therapy will last? What outcome we can see in the upcoming months or years? Right now he still in minimal verbal stimming (can ABA therapy reduced or minimize/disappear the verbal stimming?) (My son can interact like hugging, kissing, say good bye, kiss bye, he is a sweet and cheerful, playful boy) 18:56 what is a good behavior token economy. we started a summer challenge photograph the alpha bet. hope it motivates our support staff your thoughts 20:05 How do we get our son to sit through a hair cut, he's almost 8. It's getting tougher every time. 32:21 Do you have any kids that have gone through the stem cell therapy option? what were their outcomes? 35:12 What is the best way to plan a birthday party for an autistic individual? I have heard horror stories of parents planning birthday parties and nobody shows up or rsvps. some have called police officers to show up. some have had to use social media campaigns. etc. what is the best way to plan a birthday party for an autistic individual? 43:18 My son can seem to get good ABA he will start and then the BI will quit or move it's been so hard, Also they just sit him at a desk the whole time so my son feels like he is back at school. 50:25 Self Injurious Behavior (Banging Hands on Hard Surfaces) I wrote in a few weeks ago for Dr. Doreen regarding my son's self injurious stimming. Shannon asked me to email her but I haven't had the chance, we were in crisis mode. We've tried all types of replacements but nothing is working. He bangs his hand, wrist and knuckles and is causing swelling and bruises. It's not attention seeking. He likes how it feels when he bangs, He does it when there are no demands. He does it when he's alone, I've had to buy him a glove to protect his hand, wrist, knuckles. He's happy when he bangs, He's laughing and playing while he's doing it, He does it in all settings and places. https://www.autismnetwork.com/category/ask-dr-doreen/ https://www.tiktok.com/@askdrdoreen? https://www.instagram.com/askdrdoreen/ Shannon Penrod's book is out now! Ask Dr. Doreen – Elopement – ABA Therapy – Obsessive Counting

Ask Dr. Doreen – Elopement – ABA Therapy – Obsessive Counting Autism Expert and pioneer in the field of Autism, Psychologist and BCBA, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh is answering viewer questions! Tune in and check it out! Tune in on Facebook, YouTube or Twitter Tuesdays at 10am PT to join us LIVE! Recorded Live 10am PT July 26th, 2022 #AutismSpectrumDisorder #Autism #autismpodcast 5:02 I am in desperate need of some advice or direction. (Elopement) My 5-year-old eloped this morning and the rental office in which I live brought him back I assuming. I was in the bathroom freshening up for the day when I came out to knocking on the door. My son was in the living room, and we were waiting for the maintenance man to fix our AC that has been broken for 2.5 days now. I opened the door thinking it was them to fix the AC, but it was not, it was the office lady telling me they found my boy down around the corner. As of right now, my nerves are shot. I have done everything I could think of to prevent any of this to happen. I am horrified that CPS and the authorities were called and that I may have been reported. IS there anything that could happen as to having my son removed? I am literally sick to my stomach, throwing up and stomach cramps and headaches. This nightmare I want it to be over but do not know what is going to happen at this moment. UPDATE: We bought a lock with a key lock. MY nerves are still on edge this morning. Monday July 26th 2022 that I still in my mind think he still can get out. I know he cannot get out, there is no way he can. 20:12 what way can we provide auditory stimulation to a child who is continuously clapping, stamping feet, and hitting object to teeth. 27:10 What can be happening when a child stares for moments many times during the day. Done an EEG and it came out normal and whenever i touched her she is able to react. But I would like to know what it could be. 28:46 Can you please break down how I should teach my child at home? We use play therapy in Canada, and I feel like play should be part of the therapy not all. Can a child pronunciation improve with time? 38:32 For a 20-month-old is it home therapy better than clinic-based therapy? 44:16 here is a personal question. my aunt and uncle were supposed to come in today but due to a mishap in her medication her and my uncle aren't able to come. me and this particular uncle have a very deep relationship and we haven't seen each other in a year and a half due to them moving to North Carolina. I'm handling it surprisingly well, but I'm afraid in the next few days i might have a huge meltdown when it hits in fully. help me and my family. 48:55 Obsessive Counting Plenty of others deserve time but I will put this thought/question out. A verbal-stim/script behavior pattern is occurring frequently now & impairing/preventing interaction. My 5yr ASD son has taken to CONSTANTLY without stopping 30-40min. COUNTING. 100s/1000s even is OK. but he jumps into sequences of millions, billions, trillions, Google and zillion. onto creating his own. Recently he went from prep-time for out-the-door to reach summer school constant counting going through breakfast, teeth, socks, shoes, into car, trip to summer school, arrive @ school, and without stopping as he went into open area (alone). This is impairing and will make learning in a classroom not possible; and not acceptable. 55:16 Obsessive Counting Cont'd A good thing? Why would it turn on a go for 30-40min? Whisper it silently in the playground alone .. and a home. / Hmm. interesting thoughts my son is super smart about math ^ measurement, time etc... 1:02:26 Coming up on the show this week! https://www.autismnetwork.com/category/ask-dr-doreen/ https://www.tiktok.com/@askdrdoreen? https://www.instagram.com/askdrdoreen/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWSL-fAgvt3qo5yGwP4SUUQ Shannon Penrod's book is out now! The bedtime ritual starts in the morning and lasts all day. Physical activity is a great success strategy. The night time ritual: Dinner with no stimulants, bath or swim, special jammies, reading/singing, low key fun in bed, leaving. Reward good sleep behaviors. The bedtime pass. When We provide him he toilet paper He just toss this in the toilet but does not clean himself. When we do hand over hand is the only time He clean himself. What to do to make him understand that is important to clean himself after a BM? Thank you in advance. 09:04 Responding from Another Room My son, 13, is doing all kinds of new things! He used to not answer us if he was in another room. Recently he has been answering us from another room but not extremely loud enough for us to hear him. I want to ask his new BCBA to write a goal for this. Any thoughts and ideas on this? 11:32 How can I help get Rid of a Script? How can i help get rid of a script my so. picked up . its a violent phrase? it was something he heard from a show clip. he says it randomly. 16:14 My son who is 5 years old and he keeps talking about poop. My son who is 5 years old and he keeps talking about poop. We ignore it and it goes away but right back at it. 19:46 here is a question for both of you. I'm volunteering at mu churches VBS and have to wear A inflatable koala suit. the problem is, is that children freak me out. what can I do to do good with this opportunity? 24:29 How do we teach parents how to spot "bad" ABA and as BCBAs, get more "good/great" ABA out in the world? 31:31 Hi Shannon and Dr. Doreen. Sometimes I find myself in conflict between putting too much pressure on my son, with his intervention demands, and just "accepting him the way he is". Is there a balance? 40:27 Hi there, my Son is 20 years old and when he gets frustrated ( I think it's that) he starts pounding his chest, and I can't seem to redirect him at that moment cause he's upset obviously, how can I help him to get away from this type of behavior, thank you so much. 42:55 Potty Training hi Shannon and Dr. Doreen.. My son always jumps and run here and there before going for potty. I tried so much to make him sit on the toilet seat and go for potty. can you suggest anything? 43:44 There was a post this morning about a SLP who told a mom that ABA was like a "cult". Glass walls, no parents aloud. I've had a BCBA that told me there was no data behind diet. 45:12 My question is for Dr Doreen. I recently hired ABA Consultant and instead of assessing my daughter he was flirting with the teachers. After 2hrs of observations he charged me 500pounds& send me 1 page. I live in London and I am really disappointed with the services or lack of service. He also sent me email insisting that he wants to train my daughter's teachers. I informed him I want you to train me He wants to train the teachers instead. Many thanks. 47:20 I have dyspraxia, ADHD and Asperger's traits . Have you heard of this combination? When is the chat live? 50:02 I have a 3 yr that has ADHD and autism he gets really violent he start hitting me throwing things at me kicking things and screaming when tell him no or if he's doing something that can hurt him and I say to get down because he going to get hurt he gets out of control how do help him not get to that level. 53:55 My son is 7 and is doing great but I'm just overwhelmed and feel defeated at times. This is for the long haul and I'm tired. I love my son but I'm struggling with the forever of it all! Shannon Penrod's book is out now! Ask Dr. Doreen - Behavior Challenges - Resources for Adults with Autism - ABA

Autism Expert and pioneer in the field of Autism, Psychologist and BCBA, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh is answering viewer questions about behavior challenges, resources for adults on the autism spectrum, ABA and more! Tune in and check it out! 4:45 I'm looking for some help I'm a single mom raising a four-year-old on the Spectrum 5:30 Good morning, I need help finding living accommodations for my 28-year-old son 6:24 Hi there!! My son is 4 and he can comment and answer questions. But still can't ask questions. He engages with adults. But doesn't accept kids at all. He blacks out the kids doesn't respond to them. I tried pairing his cousins but didn't work. I tried all the ways to bring peer play. Now I'm thinking of stopping the ABA and try bio medical to facilitate peer play/engagement 15:34 I'm looking for some help I'm a single mom raising a four-year-old on the Spectrum. I feel as if i am suffocating I don't have a big family, no support, I need to find peace. for example, I have anger issues and I'm afraid of disciplining Colton because I don't want to get to upset. I also am a recovering Alex I have PTSD so I have a severe panic disorder already please help me with what I can do or where I can reach out so that I don't have this ball of anxiety going on around me all the time because it sponges off onto my son. My biggest question is about CBD T and tinctures. 23:38 I am Zara from London with two children on spectrum. My son is two and he squeezes things and my hands 27:17 I'm asking as I fought for my son to get an IEE and services missed. I got an advocate as well as attorney and we were offered 2 years at a private school designed for kids on the spectrum. 33:19 Hi Dr. Doreen, our 9 yr old son who is not affected my autism very much, but he still needs assistance. He was discharged from ABA, Speech, and OT, but as a SkillsGlobal user, he still needs help. Can we hire an RBT and do Telehealth with a Card provider? We're in Pennsylvania, and the closest CARD center is over an hour away in NJ. 36:40 My son with med/high-function ASD has a wealth of words & comprehension .. bottle it is often bottled up -- until something he is fixated on fills his thoughts. .. Hence, when he achieves things & reads or creates with crafts- WE BECOME VERY CONGRATULATORY & high with praise . Mistake #1 - our response can be TOO dramatic & 'not normal' - BOOM, TOO MUCH STIMULATION & A IMMEDIATE MELTDOWN, ANGER . and suddenly everything shuts down for 40min - and is started to become angry, shrieking, and "starting" to become aggressive-physical PROBLEM #1 - remain silent & neutral, somewhat punitive WITHOUT projecting no-care & 'Mom-Dad' are not a safe place now. .. HARD-HARD because our 'almost 5yr' can unravel on a dime. 43:03 Good morning, I need help finding living accommodations for my 28-year-old son (California) 45:28 Hello ladies. My son tends to throw toys when he gets angry.when i place a demand or say no to something hes getting mad and throwing. Im trying different ways to stop it. As its increasing.

Ask Dr. Doreen - Elopement - Processing Speed - ABA

6:15 Hi from Australia. Up late with my son on the spectrum that refuses to sleep at night. Help He is 11 and nonverbal 16:49 we are try to work on elopement issues with my little. for some reason separation anxiety is very high . he has eloped with his support person while i am at work thank fully he only made it out the door and was caught before he made it to our drive way. 4 x last month scary 25:04 My 4.5 yo ASD son is making progress (esp. cog., lang.), but still struggles w attention. He often gets stuck in his own mind (thinking about things or whispering under his breath)& doesn't tune in. When he does tune in, he can answer questions (including some how and why) and do simple math/reading and talks mostly in full sentences with decent grammar. He doesn't really stim (other than a little vocal stimming), so I think he needs this "in his head" time to decompress. But he also needs attention for school. Will this improve in time? How do I help? I think he may have some slow processing speed, but the reason I don't think that is all of it is sometimes he answers pretty quick, and other times (when he's tuned out) its VERY slow (or not at all) 40:31 Do you recommend taking a break from therapy? Aiden has been in therapies. We're taking a break from OT. Aiden seems to be more frustrated lately. I don't want to take a break from ABA or speech. Since OT is only 30 minutes I feel like the therapist just wants to get things done Definitely not enough high reinforcement 47:45 There are children's hospitals that do this now. It's called "episodes of care". I hate it. They force families to take breaks. 52:42 My son was diagnosed with Social Communication Disorders (SCD) at 2 years old and after that we begin therapy: sensory integration, speech therapy, occupational therapy, floor time, behavior therapy (not ABA), playgroup with shadow teacher (only 2 months). He can mention words, animal, vegetable, fruit (tach) at 2 years 9 months old. But, since he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) at 2 years 10 months old, we start begin with ABA therapy at 3 years old. For starter, 20 hours a week (home ABA), now we increase to 30 hours a week but with the different center ABA therapy (ABA verbal behavior) and we plan to increase the hours by joining the third center (in Jakarta there is a maximum hours per week therapy in one single center). Now at 3 years 3 months, he can mention more functional words, tach, and mand (he want milk, he want his mom accompany him, he want to sleep etc., not so much). No aggressive or challenging behavior problems. He is a sweet boy who can hug his dad or mom or grandpa, know his name and how old is he. Also, ABA therapy has increase his eye contact. We also done biomedical therapy: antifungal for his yeast overgrowth, planning diet, and MB12 shots. My questions are: is it right to join 3 centers therapy (one in home service ABA, and two in the centers with ABA/VB directed by BCBA) and what is your opinion about ABLLS and ABA/verbal behavior because the centers use these two methods for assessment and therapy? And last, the pediatrician gives my son risperidone (little dose daily) although he not shows any challenging or aggressive behavior, is it right? 57:01 Whenever I try to bring up medication, I feel like I get judged by doctors. What are your thoughts on adding vitamin b12, b6 to his diet? will this help? My child has been doing ABA for about 3 years now. He is 6 years old. He says BAH and papa which is great and I encourage him. But I wonder if medication can help him focus and encourage speech. 1:03:15 On the show this week #AskDrDoreen #Autism #AutismPodcast https://www.autismnetwork.com/category/ask-dr-doreen/ https://www.tiktok.com/@askdrdoreen?
