Check it out! 5:49 My son has HPHPA bacteria, and my family doctor and his pediatrician refused to prescribe antibiotic. Why? because I did a second OAT with Great Plains Lab. What do I do? My son regressed into autism 12:30 Hi Doreen, my son is 4-year-old and attends center-based ABA Therapy for about 34 hours per week. It's been a year since he started, but he still stims a lot like flapping hands, spinning, jumping, verbal stim. He also got Speech apraxia I just want to know how my son will responds to the therapy in coming years, with the experience you have as you have seen so many kids, I am very worried about him, as I feel some time he is progressing and sometimes he is regressing with his stimming behaviors. 23:00 Self-Stimulatory Behavior 25:16 Our 4.5yr boy has advanced far ... as a update & hope for many. He started with Early Intervention ... OT, PT, Aba ( home & PreK ), and Speech Therapy have allowed him to blossom... He MAY be considered twice-exceptional now .. BUT falls very short with social growth AND yes - VERBAL STIMMING and focus issues will make 5yr kindergarten a BIG challenge. ANY INPUT? 35:57 I'm TERRIFIED of sending my son to kindergarten. I kept him back this year to do one more year of full time Aba. They don't allow ABA or 1 on 1 aides here. I'm just terrified 38:39 Hi Dr. Doreen, my twins will be 3 years in June. They recently got their VB Mapp Assessment done and they are on level 2 (incomplete) and some splinter skills complete in level 3 I.e. reading & math Also tasting is complete of level 3. Our BCBA warns us that some kids get stuck at level 2. Is that true? What can we do now to avoid getting stuck? 42:09 Would AIT help with verbal stimming? 46:44 My son starts to run around nonstop with vocal stemming in Costco I don't know what it is if it's the bright lights or noises and if I hold his hands, he gets angry. It only happens in Costco no other stores I've tried noise canceling headphones and sunglasses, but I haven't figured out what it is. 49:33 We need assistance in getting my son ABA therapy. Our insurance covers it but the deductible and the out-of-pocket quotes make the weekly fees exorbitant. Is there an advocate we can engage to assist us in getting these costs reduced based on our income or a grant we can apply for to assist? He is 11. We have been doing biomedical but the school he attends believes it will assist him in his academics. It is the best school we have been to and he does have trouble communicating still. He is fine for me at home. He understands my directions and even can do some home tasks at home and without any direction at all; he self directs. At school is another matter. They tell me he is not a behavioral issue at all, just having trouble with the verbal communication piece. If one individual recognizes that they're on the spectrum, And is figuring out their own triggers and corks, but the other individual does not acknowledge this is sudden realization, and continues to treat and converse with the other individual as if there is no processing issue when it comes to emotion. Issues like tone, not hearing exactly what the other person is saying, or internalizing what they're saying .. Specifically, To deal with an aggressive child. 51:35 Hello, just going to put a warning that this is going to be TMI and a little bit gross, I hope it's okay. I am 19F and I have a twin brother who is autistic and non verbal. My mother is his primary career, and I moved back home last year to help her out as my brother has gotten older and bigger than her which can sometimes be difficult for her. From us being young children to around 16, my brother was perfectly using the toilet by himself, for pooping and peeing. Just to add, he also really likes the sound of flushing and coldness of the toilet seat surface, so he often flushes the toilet just to hear the sound and he might sit on it fully clothed whilst playing games which is not really an issue. Around 16, he started pooping on the floor in the bathroom instead of the toilet. Initially we thought he was constipated and struggling to go so my mum started looking closely at his toileting routine and took him to the GP and everything was said to be fine. After a week or so of doing this we tried having him sit on the toilet (as in watching him about to go and telling him verbally to sit down) which resulted in massive meltdowns including self harming. He also stopped wiping himself with tissue afterwards. This was three years ago and since then it gotten considerably worse especially as my mum was afraid of him hurting himself if we made him sit on the toilet. He is now 19 and now poops on the floor anywhere in the house when we're not looking, and occasionally will pee on carpet etc. Most recently my mother had some friends over, and she assumed my brother was in his room watching TV or drawing. A guest got up to go to the kitchen for some water and my brother had left a particularly liquid-y surprise for us on the kitchen floor. She was with her husband [38M] for about 19 years, and they got married about 10 years ago. No-one's told me the details on why she's leaving him, but she's told our parents. They understand these things more, I think, and would give way better advice than I could since I haven't had a girlfriend before. All I know is that 'He did something silly' and that they've struggled in their marriage for the past few months. Today I made pasta as dinner for me and her. I've also looked after her kids at points in the past two days! I'm not sure if her kids have been told what's going on, but the oldest one isn't stupid and must know something isn't right. I guess I am asking for general advice on how to help, but how I should react to things. I am sad because I have known him most of my life, and we regularly have spoken about computer games we've been playing. Does this mean I should remove him as a friend on PlayStation Network? In this segment of Ask Dr. Doreen, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh, BCBA-D Phd, discusses autism diagnosis, Hyperlexia, Trauma and more! Don't miss it! 6:56 Does it Get Better? I've never posted but it's getting so hard for me to deal with my son. I guess I'm just here to vent..sorry its so long and jumbled together. My son is 4 years old and we have an evaluation scheduled for Thursday with our developmental pediatrician. I know he is autistic but am hoping we get an actual diagnosis. He has a few stims that he does when he is excited or mad, he gets frustrated so easily and has meltdowns, he avoids eye contact, he likes to smash his face into us when he's mad, he has trouble with transitions, he is verbal but doesn't communicate.. I could go on. Does it get better? Will he speak in complete sentences? How do I exist w/o being miserable? Will we ever be able to do things as a family, like going to a pumpkin patch, going to an indoor play area, meeting Santa, etc? (We went to a pumpkin patch recently and omg it was horrible) Will he ever understand birthdays or Christmas? I feel so much guilt for not being happy with the children I have. I often wonder if this is karma. Or that maybe I was never supposed to have kids. (I went through 4 rounds of IVF for my son) I feel like the depression is ruining everything - my marriage, my connection with my kids (because lately I've just wanted to walk away rather than keep trying to engage) and my life. It's hard to make friends as I am just triggered when I see their neurotypical children. My 2 special needs kids are not really interested in each other and it breaks my heart. This is not what I pictured. I have siblings and am very close with them. I guess my heart just breaks every day and I grieve the life that I know we will not have. Thanks for listening. Every allergy season my son gets super sick and he doesn't know how to blow his nose, any tips? 36:43 Hi Dr Doreen, what is the correlation hyperlexia and autism? Is it a predictor of functioning level? 39:14 When my daughter was diagnosed with mild autism the therapist said her language delay was due to the autism and had nothing to do with cognitive impairment. He also said that she would catch up to her peers and I shouldn't worry about it too much since her case is pretty mild. He did however recommend ABA therapy. When I was having the assessment interview with the ABA therapist she recommended 40 hours a week which is way higher than I assumed my daughter would need (since she has such a mild case), and she also said my daughter is at the level expected of an 18 month old. My daughter is 2.5. I really wasn't expecting this. I know my daughter is behind but to hear that she's like an 18 month old was jarring and I'm worried now that my daughter will have struggles beyond the challenges she'll face being autistic. I guess I just don't understand the huge discrepancies between the two therapists and now I'm freaked out. Does this mean she has a cognitive or intellectual impairment as well as autism? 41:58 The mind does not switch off, so sometimes the alcohol sometimes switches off the brain. People sometimes don't understand the strength of the brain with Autism. I don't wish to say to much but I know lots of things that I have learnt. But what I find is that most, don't understand how my brain is running at 1000 miles an hour from waking to sleep and sometimes in sleep because of the day. I can watch one thing and never forget it. Unless I suppress it. I also work like a computer with a data bank of information I can recall if needed. 47:06 Any advice on how to stop licking my child started this behavior licking their hand and wiping the saliva over their face the behavior started with a series of colds and now continues although well. Likes to use wet wash cloth as well if not licking. 55:16 Son refuses to go in bath tub. He is not afraid of water. ABA does water protocol. He is afraid of tub . Where do I start. He is so traumatized from last bath which we had to wash hair.
