You can also Check us out Later wherever you get your podcast! 5:04 Autism & Dealing with Neighbors For some context, I live in a basement apartment with my husband and our dog who as well as being a service animal, loves kids and is very mild-mannered. We have been having issues with our upstairs neighbors since November in regards to loud stomping, furniture being slammed, and loud screaming. I have been up to talk to them about it several times and last night I reached my breaking point. I went upstairs to ask them to please stop stomping as my husband works early mornings and was trying to sleep for work. When she opened the door I could see that the small two-bedroom apartment had no less than six adults and four kids inside of it. I calmly asked them to stop the stomping and since this is the third time I have had to ask in the last four months, the next time it got this bad I would be lodging a complaint with the property management company. My neighbor had a friend over who has a 3-year-old who is on the spectrum and was the one stomping the hardest and causing the most amount of noise. Her friend gets a sour look on her face and started chirping at me from across the room. Friend: You live in a basement apartment and he has autism, what the hell do you expect me to do there is going to be some noise. Me: Ok, I get that I live in the basement but stomping until picture frames fall off my walls is a different story. please help me 20:08 What Happens to My Child After I Die? Support for adult autistic patient who is stable, living with parent at home. He ia motivated to go to his work on MWF by bus, gets up, dresses, eats breakfast, gets bus by himself. Does household chores and hits all expectations in a timely manner. Socializes well with adults and enjoys cultural activities. Problem: what happens when parent passes? How can we make plans for him (now 59 yoa) in the case of losing his single parent (79 yoa). What preparations can be made? How can he be prepared for the loss of his dad? He does not want to live by himself. So. What can we do to prepare him for another situation? 37:58 Hello Shannon, Dr. Doreen! Thank you for always trying to help us! My son is 4+ non verbal, regressed around 20 months and attends ABA at CARD San Antonio. From your previous advice about getting a stool test done to check if there is a yeast overgrowth to rule out yeast as the reason for my son's no-reason laughing spells. We got a comprehensive stool study ordered by a functional med Dr and there was no yeast issues in the results. But some issues with mal-absorption for which a specific strain of probiotics (L Reuteri) with vit D has been prescribed. After a week of using them, he has diarrhea, earlier he had hard stools. should we hold on to the probiotics or continue even with the diarrhea? PS. he is still on the GFCFSF , reduced sugars diet 41:14 Hi I want to ask Dr. Grandpeesheh about my son qho was diagnosed with autism at 31 months. We live in South Africa. My son never responded to his name, he would spin himself around, he lined up toys and would play with them in strange ways. My son would be distracted by the smallest sounds and would hate weird textures on his hands. He would also hate to be hugged and only had 2 words by the age of 3. My son just turned 5 and now I'm starting to question his diagnosis. He has been in aba therapy, speech and OT for 2 years. Now at 5 he loves going to the playground and playing with other kids. My son always manages to find a friend. His speech is still delayed but I can have a conversation with him and I feel he will soon catch up to his peers. My son has never had a meltdown. He loves playing with dough an sand now. Doesn't seem to have sensitivity to sounds anymore and loves hugging his mom and I. He is completely different now. I just don't understand it. He is in mainstream and his teachers say he is a pleasure to have in class and he is super confident when answering questions. Do you feel he might have been misdiagnosed? 49:49 What do goals look like for older kids? We stopped at 9 because I felt like I had a handle on it.

Please 23:40 Special needs guy (35m) has crush me (20m) and won't leave me alone When I started the job back in August I would push carts in the parking lot and even then he would stick to me like glue. I now work as a cashier in the store but he still hangs around me even helping me by bagging people's stuff even though I didn't ask him to. At first I didn't mind him and was nice to him but now he thinks we're best friends and follows me to my car when leaving. Every time we see each other around he always says hi even if we literally just did this 30 seconds prior. He always tells me to pull my mask down so he can see my face and asks to hang out outside of work. What really makes me uncomfortable now is that sometimes when saying bye to each other he says "I love you" quietly but I can still hear him, and he tries to go for physical contact. I even spot him watching me when I'm in my car on my break. I try ignoring him but I can't really do that when he's breathing down my neck. I don't know if I should be direct with him and tell him to leave me alone cause I'm not sure if I'll get written up/fired for being mean to him cause it has happened here before, but I don't know the details. I really wish I was never nice to him in the first place cause I kinda brought this upon myself. I also don't know what kind of disability he has. 34:22 I know you have previously addressed proper wiping for an 8 year old, but I have an 8th grader that still does not do it correctly. We have tried many reward systems, but it's just a matter of time before they stop working. He understands how and when we talk about it he just says he is being lazy. He is in regular ed with friends and afterschool activities. I can smell it as soon as he gets home. I'm scared he will be teased and cannot believe he hasn't already! He also struggles with other areas of personal hygiene (teeth and showering). He will go weeks without brushing his teeth (says it's 'unnecessary" and throws tantrums on shower day. Again, have tried rewarding him after completion. Why are these tasks so difficult for him? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! If he can't use it he'll get mad. He can hold his pee for a very long time so I know sometimes he does not need to go, I let him go at least once when we go out sometimes two times. He draws the toilets and knows the different brands. When we sometimes don't let him go more then once he'll get mad and say I'm still going to use the bathroom, or if I go use it by myself what happens, he says it in a threatening kind of way. Sometime It's very hard to just go out to more then one place. He says he loves toilets and hand dryers. Schools ends at 3pm and my kid is so tired by that time. Moreover, my kid goes to a public school and I don't know how much they work with him. It's like a black hole. 9:29 My daughter is seven and autistic, partially verbal. During high stress situations she goes mute. Anyway, she went to my sister's house all happy on Friday. It was a whole family get together, I had to run and deliver some packages, I was gone for like half an hour. Anyway, when I got back, she was in different clothes and very clearly upset. I asked what happened and my sister told me she wet herself after she couldn't have a chocolate pop. Now, here's the thing with my girl; she would never wet herself purposefully. She has extreme anxiety surrounding her toileting, to the point of therapy. I don't know what this anxiety is caused by, but it's severe. She was clearly very distressed, so I just took her home. In the car she broke down sobbing but was unable to tell me what happened. As soon as we got home, she took herself upstairs and put a pull up on (pull ups being accessible for her is a recommendation, so she has more control over herself) and has been super cuddly since. She hasn't been using her AAV devices or signing at all. She has two therapists and she's due to see them both in the next week to see if they'll be able to help me understand what happened. Family have been awful. My sister, mainly, who is still claiming that she was being a brat and is doing this all for attention. I've since told every family member they will not be seeing her or me until the truth has been told. Am I the butthead here? I am the dad in this situation. 17:40 My son (8) only uses his verbal skills to mand for things and answer very very simple questions like How are you doing? and He answers: I am fine. But how can I help him to start a conversation? 25:05 We are in Canada unfortunately the government does not provide Speech therapy for kids more than very limited few sessions. How can we as parents help a child like 8 years old with Speech? 30:37 Good morning. my son is almost 4 and has good language. He's not going to school yet and he's not doing peer play. I'm giving ABA therapy at home. How do I produce peer play? 35:25 My Family hates me for my Autism and exploited me for my Autism and bad mouth me...My nephew is 6 and have Autism and they treat him bad for it. 41:20 They don't slow down their brain to understand sometimes and because we are literally thinking . We need people to listen more. I think it's time to stand tall and be who we are. 43:04 This may be triggering. I'm a father to a lovely 17-year-old daughter named Cameron. She was diagnosed with level 2 autism (mid functioning). She is nonverbal and uses her phone's text to speech. She's a junior in high school this year and she functions at a 7th grade level. Her teacher who I will call Mr. Smith started working at Cam's school last year during Cam's sophomore year. I was concerned about the mention of him in every sentence being typed out on her phone. Recently I found out that Mr. Smith has been giving Cam 11th grade level work simply because he believes since she is in 11th grade, she can do it. He's been restraining Cam, strapping her to the seat and sometimes tying up her arms and strapping them to her lap so she can't flap them around or jump since she does that a lot. Mr. Smith threatened to call Cam's wrestling coach and basketball coach to take her out of her sports. This makes my blood boil. 50:47 My oldest is autistic and has been diagnosed with separation anxiety and demand avoidance. It seems to us that he is in a constant state of "fight or flight" sometimes even if we are just snuggling on the couch (snuggling with someone while reading a book or playing a board game is like his idea of heaven). My wife has a background in special ed, we believe very strongly in respecting children as people, in playfulness, setting limits with warmth and compassion, etc. Some of the behavioral approaches that have been recommended to us seem antithetical to those values or seem impossible to implement outside of a very controlled therapeutic environment (which a home is not). At that time we were dealing with delayed speech. Six months ago he started stuttering. His behaviors are up and down. He is gluten and dairy free and has been on biomedical treatment for 3 years. Good behavior at school but aggression toward his younger sister and sometimes me. He wants to play with other kids, but doesn't know how. He is behind academically. He does well and then regressed. Please help. I want to meet adults who have recovered to know how we can get there too. 15:55 My son is 8 and is have been prescribed sertraline 50mg half a pill. To help with his anxiety He still has anxious behaviors like grinding his teeth and obsessing over his therapy swing at home. My question is He has taking his sertraline for a week now. His Neuropediatrucian prescribed it and it is the first time He is taking a med. 21:36 Beautiful. But sometimes I think things would have been easy if it was solely dependent on us. But its so much related to our kids, their mood , their behavior and their health. I completely agree with the answers, thank you and I am putting my efforts toward diet and supplements but I can't afford hours of ABA and more than an hour of speech a week so what should I do in that case? The autistic adults who have recovered or indistinguishable from their peers, not all of those parents who be rich to afford hours of ABA so what other ways they helped their kids? I really love to know please. 30:16 OKAY SO SOMEONE PLEASE HELP I just had the most horrifying experience ever with my son who is 4 and autistic. We're staying in a hotel as we are remodeling our home and our Ac/heat is currently down and we live in Florida and we are not built for the 30 degree weather. I accidentally fell asleep earlier with my son and daughter in the room, she fell asleep as well and he undid the latch and left. I woke up and he was gone and went into immediate panic and I called downstairs and he was there along with about 30 people and 2 police officers. There were a ton of kids with balloons so now he keeps wanting to go back down there. Is there anything I can buy to keep him in? I have no idea what to do. I put a heavy piece of furniture in front of the door that he some how can move?(he's a huge 4 year old) it was just overall a horrifying experience and I am open to any suggestions at all. Thank you so much, I feel like the worst mom in the world right now. 37:03 Mom of twin boys - 2.5 years. We have been doing ABA for over year. Kids are doing really well. Verbal not conversational yet. We are contemplating sending them to school. What are the key indicators that will help us make this decision? My son was on GAPS diet for about 1 and half and he improved but GAPS diet is so restrict and I felt bad every time my son asked for something that was out of his diet. On the other hand my husband also believed that it was more like a punishments' to put my son on a restricted diet. Now he is on GAPS plus diet, meaning he is having some grains that are not allowed in GAPS diet. But as I mentioned earlier his behavior is always up and down and he is 8 years old but far from recovery which worries me the most. Not sure what specific diet other parents, specially parents with recovered kids, followed? I appreciate a discussion on this please. 56:16 can you please name/recommend some great MAPS doctors? Do you accept new patients Dr. Doreen? 58:32 Does ABA work when there is also dual diagnosis of pathological demand avoidance? My daughter is 9, is this too late for ABA. I saw him yesterday and I feel like I want to break up already, he touched my face constantly and I had to removed it everytime, and everytime he said that he forgot. Check it out! 6:32 My nine year old who has ADHD, PTSD and is on the spectrum is having such a hard time. We've missed almost a month of school due to Christmas break, snow days and covid. The slack of routine is sent him into a spiral. We're talking meltdowns at least every couple hours. Repeating the same sentences over and over again. We are working with a psychiatric nurse practitioner to get him further help. We're going to try occupational therapy for sensory overload. He's also on a blood pressure lowering medication that's supposed to help with sleep since he's up multiple times a night. We are also working on getting an official diagnosis. He sees a really good therapist but that also has been thrown out of whack due to the holidays and sickness. He lives with me, his step dad and our 4 other kids. I'm the only one who can remain patient and calm during his meltdowns. I'm exhausted. I'm grieving. I'm worried this is ruining my marriage. 19:30 Not sure if you already have your questions. I'm working with my son on reading with expression. He's very good at imitating my facial features and body gestures when I read. Our issue is he OVERLY exaggerates me to the point where it just looks awkward. I'm so proud of him because he definitely understands it but how would I get him to tone it down a little? He has amazing Skills but I'm starting to think math is just one of his week ESS. But would like to help him because I feel he can learn it, been that he's so verbal and smart, please help.
