I'm also a hikikomori/agoraphobic/social recluse, which makes things harder. She's staying with me and our parents with her two sons at the moment. [8M] and [4M]. She was with her husband [38M] for about 19 years, and they got married about 10 years ago. No-one's told me the details on why she's leaving him, but she's told our parents. They understand these things more, I think, and would give way better advice than I could since I haven't had a girlfriend before. All I know is that 'He did something silly' and that they've struggled in their marriage for the past few months. Today I made pasta as dinner for me and her. I've also looked after her kids at points in the past two days! I'm not sure if her kids have been told what's going on, but the oldest one isn't stupid and must know something isn't right. I guess I am asking for general advice on how to help, but how I should react to things. I am sad because I have known him most of my life, and we regularly have spoken about computer games we've been playing. Does this mean I should remove him as a friend on PlayStation Network? I need help handling this better. this is causing my family a lot of hassle. please help me be a better son and to do better let me add on. my stepdad is also helping me a lot as well. and he is one of those people that doesn't get autism in general. he is a southern person who believes in rules. In this segment of Ask Dr. Doreen, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh, BCBA-D Phd, discusses autism diagnosis, Hyperlexia, Trauma and more! Don't miss it! 6:56 Does it Get Better? I've never posted but it's getting so hard for me to deal with my son. I guess I'm just here to vent..sorry its so long and jumbled together. My son is 4 years old and we have an evaluation scheduled for Thursday with our developmental pediatrician. I know he is autistic but am hoping we get an actual diagnosis. He has a few stims that he does when he is excited or mad, he gets frustrated so easily and has meltdowns, he avoids eye contact, he likes to smash his face into us when he's mad, he has trouble with transitions, he is verbal but doesn't communicate.. I could go on. Does it get better? Will he speak in complete sentences? How do I exist w/o being miserable? Will we ever be able to do things as a family, like going to a pumpkin patch, going to an indoor play area, meeting Santa, etc? (We went to a pumpkin patch recently and omg it was horrible) Will he ever understand birthdays or Christmas? I feel so much guilt for not being happy with the children I have. I often wonder if this is karma. Or that maybe I was never supposed to have kids. (I went through 4 rounds of IVF for my son) I feel like the depression is ruining everything - my marriage, my connection with my kids (because lately I've just wanted to walk away rather than keep trying to engage) and my life. It's hard to make friends as I am just triggered when I see their neurotypical children. My 2 special needs kids are not really interested in each other and it breaks my heart. This is not what I pictured. I have siblings and am very close with them. I guess my heart just breaks every day and I grieve the life that I know we will not have. Thanks for listening. Every allergy season my son gets super sick and he doesn't know how to blow his nose, any tips? 36:43 Hi Dr Doreen, what is the correlation hyperlexia and autism? Is it a predictor of functioning level? 39:14 When my daughter was diagnosed with mild autism the therapist said her language delay was due to the autism and had nothing to do with cognitive impairment. He also said that she would catch up to her peers and I shouldn't worry about it too much since her case is pretty mild. He did however recommend ABA therapy. When I was having the assessment interview with the ABA therapist she recommended 40 hours a week which is way higher than I assumed my daughter would need (since she has such a mild case), and she also said my daughter is at the level expected of an 18 month old. My daughter is 2.5. I really wasn't expecting this. I know my daughter is behind but to hear that she's like an 18 month old was jarring and I'm worried now that my daughter will have struggles beyond the challenges she'll face being autistic. I guess I just don't understand the huge discrepancies between the two therapists and now I'm freaked out. Does this mean she has a cognitive or intellectual impairment as well as autism? 41:58 The mind does not switch off, so sometimes the alcohol sometimes switches off the brain. People sometimes don't understand the strength of the brain with Autism. I don't wish to say to much but I know lots of things that I have learnt. But what I find is that most, don't understand how my brain is running at 1000 miles an hour from waking to sleep and sometimes in sleep because of the day. I can watch one thing and never forget it. Unless I suppress it. I also work like a computer with a data bank of information I can recall if needed. 47:06 Any advice on how to stop licking my child started this behavior licking their hand and wiping the saliva over their face the behavior started with a series of colds and now continues although well. Likes to use wet wash cloth as well if not licking. 55:16 Son refuses to go in bath tub. He is not afraid of water. ABA does water protocol. He is afraid of tub . Where do I start. He is so traumatized from last bath which we had to wash hair. We have been having issues with our upstairs neighbors since November in regards to loud stomping, furniture being slammed, and loud screaming. I have been up to talk to them about it several times and last night I reached my breaking point. I went upstairs to ask them to please stop stomping as my husband works early mornings and was trying to sleep for work. When she opened the door I could see that the small two-bedroom apartment had no less than six adults and four kids inside of it. I calmly asked them to stop the stomping and since this is the third time I have had to ask in the last four months, the next time it got this bad I would be lodging a complaint with the property management company. My neighbor had a friend over who has a 3-year-old who is on the spectrum and was the one stomping the hardest and causing the most amount of noise. Her friend gets a sour look on her face and started chirping at me from across the room. Friend: You live in a basement apartment and he has autism, what the hell do you expect me to do there is going to be some noise. Me: Ok, I get that I live in the basement but stomping until picture frames fall off my walls is a different story. please help me 20:08 What Happens to My Child After I Die? Support for adult autistic patient who is stable, living with parent at home. He ia motivated to go to his work on MWF by bus, gets up, dresses, eats breakfast, gets bus by himself. Does household chores and hits all expectations in a timely manner. Socializes well with adults and enjoys cultural activities. Problem: what happens when parent passes? How can we make plans for him (now 59 yoa) in the case of losing his single parent (79 yoa). What preparations can be made? How can he be prepared for the loss of his dad? My son is 4+ non verbal, regressed around 20 months and attends ABA at CARD San Antonio. From your previous advice about getting a stool test done to check if there is a yeast overgrowth to rule out yeast as the reason for my son's no-reason laughing spells. We got a comprehensive stool study ordered by a functional med Dr and there was no yeast issues in the results. But some issues with mal-absorption for which a specific strain of probiotics (L Reuteri) with vit D has been prescribed. After a week of using them, he has diarrhea, earlier he had hard stools. should we hold on to the probiotics or continue even with the diarrhea? PS. he is still on the GFCFSF , reduced sugars diet 41:14 Hi I want to ask Dr. Grandpeesheh about my son qho was diagnosed with autism at 31 months. We live in South Africa. My son never responded to his name, he would spin himself around, he lined up toys and would play with them in strange ways. My son would be distracted by the smallest sounds and would hate weird textures on his hands. He would also hate to be hugged and only had 2 words by the age of 3. My son just turned 5 and now I'm starting to question his diagnosis. He has been in aba therapy, speech and OT for 2 years. Now at 5 he loves going to the playground and playing with other kids. My son always manages to find a friend. His speech is still delayed but I can have a conversation with him and I feel he will soon catch up to his peers. My son has never had a meltdown. He loves playing with dough an sand now. Doesn't seem to have sensitivity to sounds anymore and loves hugging his mom and I. He is completely different now. I just don't understand it. He is in mainstream and his teachers say he is a pleasure to have in class and he is super confident when answering questions. My son would be distracted by the smallest sounds and would hate weird textures on his hands. He would also hate to be hugged and only had 2 words by the age of 3. My son just turned 5 and now I'm starting to question his diagnosis. He has been in aba therapy, speech and OT for 2 years. Now at 5 he loves going to the playground and playing with other kids. My son always manages to find a friend. His speech is still delayed but I can have a conversation with him and I feel he will soon catch up to his peers. My son has never had a meltdown. He loves playing with dough an sand now. Doesn't seem to have sensitivity to sounds anymore and loves hugging his mom and I. He is completely different now. I just don't understand it. He is in mainstream and his teachers say he is a pleasure to have in class and he is super confident when answering questions. Please 23:40 Special needs guy (35m) has crush me (20m) and won't leave me alone When I started the job back in August I would push carts in the parking lot and even then he would stick to me like glue. I now work as a cashier in the store but he still hangs around me even helping me by bagging people's stuff even though I didn't ask him to. At first I didn't mind him and was nice to him but now he thinks we're best friends and follows me to my car when leaving. Every time we see each other around he always says hi even if we literally just did this 30 seconds prior. He always tells me to pull my mask down so he can see my face and asks to hang out outside of work. What really makes me uncomfortable now is that sometimes when saying bye to each other he says "I love you" quietly but I can still hear him, and he tries to go for physical contact. I even spot him watching me when I'm in my car on my break. I try ignoring him but I can't really do that when he's breathing down my neck. I don't know if I should be direct with him and tell him to leave me alone cause I'm not sure if I'll get written up/fired for being mean to him cause it has happened here before, but I don't know the details. I really wish I was never nice to him in the first place cause I kinda brought this upon myself. I also don't know what kind of disability he has. 34:22 I know you have previously addressed proper wiping for an 8 year old, but I have an 8th grader that still does not do it correctly. We have tried many reward systems, but it's just a matter of time before they stop working. He understands how and when we talk about it he just says he is being lazy. He is in regular ed with friends and afterschool activities. I can smell it as soon as he gets home. I'm scared he will be teased and cannot believe he hasn't already! He also struggles with other areas of personal hygiene (teeth and showering). He will go weeks without brushing his teeth (says it's 'unnecessary" and throws tantrums on shower day. Again, have tried rewarding him after completion. Why are these tasks so difficult for him? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! PS.. he has a typically developing younger and older brothers that model proper hygiene for him. How do we make him care? 38:58 I feel SO bad about this... should I though? So, my son gets in home therapy and he actually really loves it. However, a while back I had to tell the main lady at the office that one woman really wasn't working out. she was really a cool person, but she wasn't actually doing anything with my son but sitting there and playing on her phone. so i said it wasn't working... nbd. Now, though... he has three that come over and he loves them, they play with him, we've seen great strides in many aspects of his life... well... they just included a 4th person and to be quite frank, she's rude and disrespectful to my whole household. 48:50 My son is 9 yes old autistic , lately he has been acting different, sexually, he acts out physically grinding , at first I thought he was exploring , but now he seems to call names , he says nasty words, and he wants me to kiss him or he push his my head down. I am not married at this time and no man is coming to my house for him to see this behavior. He his visits his dad (everyday), I asked dad if he has any thing to say about that and he said, no he wouldn't see any thing like that. I am so confused to is this normal or should I be concerned. 54:10 Good morning, my almost 11 year old has high functioning ASD. One of our biggest challenges is his false/exaggerated memories of events. They are always negative, never positive. For example, we will bring him to basketball (which he loves and always excited to go) and he will report how awful practice was and how much he hates it, and we "make him do things he hates" but then 2 days later he is back to being excited to go to practice and runs inside. He does this for most activities.

I have a question about my 11yr old son with autism, he's obsessed with toilets and hand dryer, when we go out he wants to use the bathroom more than once and If we go to different places he wants to use all the bathroom available to him, it can get hard because some days I just have enough time to run in and out of a place. If he can't use it he'll get mad. He can hold his pee for a very long time so I know sometimes he does not need to go, I let him go at least once when we go out sometimes two times. He draws the toilets and knows the different brands. When we sometimes don't let him go more then once he'll get mad and say I'm still going to use the bathroom, or if I go use it by myself what happens, he says it in a threatening kind of way. Sometime It's very hard to just go out to more then one place. He says he loves toilets and hand dryers. Schools ends at 3pm and my kid is so tired by that time. Moreover, my kid goes to a public school and I don't know how much they work with him. It's like a black hole. 9:29 My daughter is seven and autistic, partially verbal. During high stress situations she goes mute. Anyway, she went to my sister's house all happy on Friday. It was a whole family get together, I had to run and deliver some packages, I was gone for like half an hour. Anyway, when I got back, she was in different clothes and very clearly upset. I asked what happened and my sister told me she wet herself after she couldn't have a chocolate pop. Now, here's the thing with my girl; she would never wet herself purposefully. She has extreme anxiety surrounding her toileting, to the point of therapy. I don't know what this anxiety is caused by, but it's severe. She was clearly very distressed, so I just took her home. In the car she broke down sobbing but was unable to tell me what happened. As soon as we got home, she took herself upstairs and put a pull up on (pull ups being accessible for her is a recommendation, so she has more control over herself) and has been super cuddly since. She hasn't been using her AAV devices or signing at all. She has two therapists and she's due to see them both in the next week to see if they'll be able to help me understand what happened. Family have been awful. My sister, mainly, who is still claiming that she was being a brat and is doing this all for attention. I've since told every family member they will not be seeing her or me until the truth has been told. Am I the butthead here? I am the dad in this situation. 17:40 My son (8) only uses his verbal skills to mand for things and answer very very simple questions like How are you doing? and He answers: I am fine. But how can I help him to start a conversation? 25:05 We are in Canada unfortunately the government does not provide Speech therapy for kids more than very limited few sessions. How can we as parents help a child like 8 years old with Speech? 30:37 Good morning. my son is almost 4 and has good language. He's not going to school yet and he's not doing peer play. I'm giving ABA therapy at home. How do I produce peer play? 35:25 My Family hates me for my Autism and exploited me for my Autism and bad mouth me...My nephew is 6 and have Autism and they treat him bad for it. 41:20 They don't slow down their brain to understand sometimes and because we are literally thinking . We need people to listen more. I think it's time to stand tall and be who we are. 43:04 This may be triggering. I'm a father to a lovely 17-year-old daughter named Cameron. She was diagnosed with level 2 autism (mid functioning). She is nonverbal and uses her phone's text to speech. She's a junior in high school this year and she functions at a 7th grade level. Her teacher who I will call Mr. Smith started working at Cam's school last year during Cam's sophomore year. I was concerned about the mention of him in every sentence being typed out on her phone. Recently I found out that Mr. Smith has been giving Cam 11th grade level work simply because he believes since she is in 11th grade, she can do it. He's been restraining Cam, strapping her to the seat and sometimes tying up her arms and strapping them to her lap so she can't flap them around or jump since she does that a lot. Mr. Smith threatened to call Cam's wrestling coach and basketball coach to take her out of her sports. This makes my blood boil. 50:47 My oldest is autistic and has been diagnosed with separation anxiety and demand avoidance. It seems to us that he is in a constant state of "fight or flight" sometimes even if we are just snuggling on the couch (snuggling with someone while reading a book or playing a board game is like his idea of heaven). My wife has a background in special ed, we believe very strongly in respecting children as people, in playfulness, setting limits with warmth and compassion, etc. Some of the behavioral approaches that have been recommended to us seem antithetical to those values or seem impossible to implement outside of a very controlled therapeutic environment (which a home is not).
