I have a student going through this, but unfortunately his family does not support it and refuses to talk about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 17:40 - Dr. Doreen, is there a resource for teenagers on the spectrum if they are at risk (depression, suicidal) that they can talk to? 22:50 – How can I get more Independent language? This morning we walked outside and he said brrr it's cold. I want more please independent unit. My son loves to use script from cartoons and kids movies. Sometimes it's silly but we are more concerned about the script that sounds threatening. For example, "I will kill you for this" from the jungle book movie. "I will shoot you" from The secret life of pets. Now he uses those scripts when he is angry as well. I have heard 9 year old boy was charged with crime in GA for scripting from game "I will burn down school with fire bottles ". So I am extremely nervous and desperate who to ask for help. My son loves school but now I am so scared to send him to school. I can't trust teacher that they will send my son to jail and charged with crime for scripting.

Mand Explained and Your Rights with Special Education Attorney Bonnie Yates (Video)
Check out Shannon Define Mand for the Jargon of the day before interviewing our favorite Special Education Lawyer, Bonnie Yates from Tollner Law Offices! Questions answered: 37:17 - My son has ASD diagnosis, he is 5 and attended K online this year, we had completed our IEP before COVID and he had speech and OT services. It has been a nightmare. It took forever for them to figure out how to do speech on line and they never really figured out the OT. Now they are making recommendations for the new IEP and they are removing OT, their rationale is that he did okay without it! Please tell me this is as stupid as I think? 42:11 - We are starting the process of asking for comp ed this summer. Can you outline the steps of how we pursue this? My hope is to get them to pay for a 1:1 tutor for the summer. My fear is they will offer us summer school, in person with masks. My son is in 4th grade, he has missed so much academically this year and I am concerned that a summer of masks will not come close to getting him caught up. 45:30 - What are Bonnie's thoughts on having our kids repeat a year due to COVID? I feel like this year is a waste and wonder if a do-over isn't the best choice. 46:42 - Last week you talked about prior written notice. If we get prior written notice and disagree with the decision, what are my options? 51:15 – When we get a "Prior Written Notice" does it look like any other form of communication from the school or does it have "prior written notice" written somewhere on it? 52:28 – What do you do If the school gives your prior written notice and you do not agree with the actions that they are giving you notice of. 56:28 - How can I get the school to pay for Speech Therapist outside of school? We've been getting our speech this year online and it's not getting it done. She needs in-person and the school won't allow that.

Do y'all recommend it? 38:41 – Hello Ladies, I would like to ask for help with my son who just a few weeks ago started having intense behaviors. Which include doing rituals like tapping on things, going back to step on the floor, running towards the door of the house, running towards the kitchen wall, he is also crying out of nowhere, screaming, asking for help and saying things like "Don't take me" and "I don't want to die". When my husband or myself try to stop him from doing some of the rituals he becomes aggressive towards us or himself. I'm not sure where all this behavior came from but it all started around Christmas time. Prior to the procedure the behavior starting he had a dental procedure to remove two baby teeth that were not coming out on their own and adult teeth were already coming in. The experience was traumatic. They had to strap him down because he was trying to hit. He had never had a procedure like that done before. The whole time from start to finish he cried, screamed and asked for help. It was the most traumatizing day I swear. I feel like all these behaviors started the day after the dentist. He has never had such rigid behavior before. He seems scared and super anxious it almost looks like he has panic attacks a few times a day. I asked him the other day after he had calmed down why he was squeezing his head. He replied that he heard a "Chin-Chin" Type of sound and that he wanted to touch his brain. He also added that he couldn't put his body back together and that there were a lot of sick people dying. Please help. Help me, this is really terrible seeing him. He looks like he lost he's so lost and almost like he can't control his body or his brain. Please, I don't know how to help him and I don't know how much longer I can see him like this. Thank you. 47:58 – At what age can EFT Tapping be affective with a child with trauma? 51:27 - wish I knew how to handle my brother, even after many years I still don't know how to prevent his anger bursts. He's in his 60's now and still unpredictable and has a very short fuse. 56:10 - Is it normal for schools to not want to be on board with your child ABA program? I thought ABA was generalized? They want to do their own thing and I wanted ABA to be a part of his IEP.

Make sure you leave us a review to let us know how we are doing or what you would like to see more of! Questions asked: 05:45 - I would love to know how to handle a child who gets into a meltdown because we refuse to give him chips or anything that is not good for him. We are tired of giving in to him just to keep the peace. He is verbal and turning 25 soon. 10:40 - hi Dr. Doreen my question is about diets, my mother is trying to force me to change my eating habits and I am not happy about that, yelling matches have occurred, etc. I know that it is good for my health but my liver is diseased and has problems. How can I as an autistic person handle it perfectly? 17:45 - I have a question for Dr. Doreen please? My son is 4.8 years old having 30 hours of ABA therapy for 9 months now. He is speaking small sentences but he gets random bouts of laughter which are very difficult to control. We are treating yeast as well. Should I ignore it or respond? Please help me , desperate Mom. 22:40 - How can adults who are diagnosed with autism as adults learn social skills? Also are there resources available for those who are diagnosed as an adults? In my research it seems like if you were diagnosed as an adult your diagnosis is less legitimate. 29:00 – Free IBT Parent E-Learning Course 32:40 - My son is finally starting ABA services again in home since COVID began. He is 12. Its 5 days a week 2 hours per day. He's doing a focused program. He is starting vision therapy next week. VT wants to work on Fixation and Convergence. Do you know if there are any programs/goals I can ask his BCBA for to aide with those Vision Therapy goals? 38:50 - she was diagnosed last year at 6. I need help. Maybe a list of things to do to help her and help myself. I am at my wits end. When she has her meltdowns, she hits, screams, throws things. I don't know what to do? 52:20 – Would you be willing to go talk to the Prime Minister of Canada? 54:00 - 4 year old with severe and receptive delay. Struggling to follow directions and putting objects in mouth how to help? Also bites on wrists. Thank You

Ask Dr. Doreen (Video)
This time on Ask Dr. Doreen, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders answered the following questions: 6:02 - I finally was able to get the ABA provider and speech pathologist together on a session for my child, she is 2 ½ non-verbal, 40 hrs of ABA. We are starting on PECS. When is time for her to say the words independently, I can see her frustration, I can see she tries, but its so hard to see her crying when she can't say the words. (example for Bi, she says Di) (up she says Upa) Shannon I know that you gave as an example when kids are learning how to walk, and they keep falling, you can't stop trying right?. It's just so hard to see. I just don't know what to ask for both teams, how will the collaboration will look like? And what can I do to help my tiny human? I like when you said that ABA has this buckles with all of the tools. I want to think my ABA provider will have them. In the Session the 2 providers exchange goals, and that is it. nada more., nada for me, and nada for my tiny human ☹ She can echoic, at least 8 sounds. She can stay on a table for at least 10 - 15 minutes. She can mand at least 4 things with PECS. She has being on a Gluten and Casein Diet and no MSG since she was 1 ½. I heard of Apraxia before, but is she too little to know if she has this condition? Shannon you think Dr. Granpeesheh can give me some guidance, and what do you think? 00:17:48 – Teaching Non-Verbal Kids to Talk 00:20:41 – PECS 00:23:36 – My child is 5 with receptive communication and has Apraxia, currently he has ABA 30 hrs a week, speech therapy and OT. He communicates with signs gestures and a speech and is motivated to make sounds, should I stay the course with ABA? 00:26:29 – What should I do about a client that can't tolerate crying peers. In the past the BCBA did not FCT ask for headphones or go away but his behavior hasn't decreased. I am intervening 00:31:14 - Is there a process to assess my son to see if he is ready for general education? 00:40:39 – How long could a single case agreement take? Can she start her son with CARD at age 3? 00:47:29 – CARD, insurance Providers, and Insurance Networks 00:49:02 – How can we replace hand flapping behavior for more appropriate behavior? 00:52:44 – Free Skills Lesson Segment
