Ask Dr. Doreen
Watch/Listen as our host responds to autism questions with the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh! 9:18 With events of catatonic My teenage x 2 in last 3 years Is this a medical problem or medication related? 11:22 Negative Self-Talk Good morning. My 13 year old son uses a lot of negative self talk...I'm terrible at this. I failed! I'm the worst one...etc. We've tried ignoring it because I think he does it for attention, but he still says negative statements about himself all the time. I actually think he likes to say them. What else can we do? 20:37 What is a good medication for anxiety I am Trying to get away from medications and trying THC w/ CBD, but I don't want to prevent myself from getting a job either It's unfortunate that social media isn't helping. It's better to have a face to face conversation 30:22 Trying New Foods My daughter is on the spectrum (she's almost 7) and I can not get her to try new foods without a complete meltdown. She will scream, cry and throw the food. If I do get her to try something new, she'll automatically gag and spit it out. She only eats crunchy textures (chips, dry cereal, crackers, pretzels) and other sugary junk foods. How can I get her to try new things? I've taken her to the doctors (more than once) and that did nothing… the doctor wanted her to try new foods with her there (the same thing I've tried) but charged almost $200 to do it each time so I canceled. Any advice would be appreciated. 39:12 The child follows what the mother puts before her… remove chips and any sugars, the child should be introduced to a different diet. 45:45 Potty Training (Prompting) Hi. My 8 year old son with Autism will only poop if I tell him to sit on the toilet. If I don't, he will hold it and I will eventually have to give him something to help him go and it's usually a disaster. How to get him to be independent? He goes to regular ed school and does well academically. 48:07 My child is 3. As we move towards the fall, she would move towards intensive ABA or have him go to school? 55:27 Is it worth it to try the Gluten Free Casein Free Diet? I have a 4 year old diagnosed with autism who has dark circles underneath his eyes, is it worth it to try the GFCF diet? Are we risking anything by trying it?

Ask Dr. Doreen
Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, joins us again for another episode of Ask Dr. Doreen! Dr. Doreen answers viewer questions about school refusal, mouthing, aggression and more, tune in! 1:05 School Refusal Can you please talk about how to deal with school refusal – kids and teens who refuse to go to school, tantrum to get out of it, hide, etc. 11:28 Mouthing How can I stop mouthing for a 3 year old who knows not to mouth but sneaks mouthing when you are not looking. Mouths squishy toys and hard plastic objects BCBA recommended "chewlery" allowing child to Bite that then fading it but advised could take a long time to fade Said there is no other sensory outlet for mouthing than providing a chew toy, crunchy foods, and toothbrush. I have been blocking the behavior and verbal "no" 18:05 Aggressive Teenagers What's the best way to deal with aggression in a teenager? My son's automatic reaction is to hit out when things don't go his way. He instantly regrets it, it's just an automatic response to anything he feels is unfair. Consequences escalate his behavior. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. 20:32 Developmental Delay Vs Autism Hi Dr. Doreen. I am living in the UAE and a mother of 2 year old identical twins. We first saw signs of autism at 13 months old. Given we don't have any financial support through insurance - we did a lot of therapy ourselves and later hired a RBT. They are currently doing ABA 5 hours per week each. They have progressed really well. Can mand, tact, answer simple questions. Really good with academics - numbers alphabets - reading 3 letter words. They are still behind in social and play skills. Seeing their great progress and their ability to learn so quickly- I sometimes wonder if they are just developmentally delayed or is this autism? What is the possibility that they are just delayed. 29:08 How can I support family with caring for my son after my surgery in August. I will not be able to care for him for 2 weeks. 34:50 Potty Training Regression 5 year old regression in potty training. Do I have to start all over? He's fighting hard to not go to the potty and going # 1 in his pants after being fully potty trained. When I say fighting hard I'm talking major protesting tantrums to not go to the potty, and then going in his pants 45:16 could it be it's difficulty to detoxifying because they have lack of good bacteria in the bowel? They should start to do tests on autistic individually because of the wide spectrum and high level of iron would you suggest a specific diet? I tried t0 do a detoxifying diet but she was not eating at all. 51:36 (Response to the Potty Training Question) Potty trained for a year, going by himself. Ever since school got out He's been doing this ever since school got out for summer I think he wants both to control over his environment and he doesn't want to stop what he's doing

Extremely high functioning, however as an adult they need still a care taker in a sense. Cannot drive, really bad with money, super gullible...can't really cook. I've never lived with someone with autism, however my heart broke when they told me their story. I'm Caucasian, and they a person of color. Most of 2020 they were homeless and even caught COVID because of it. Couch surfing, they got sexually abuses by some they were staying with and others just took their social security money and EBT, all while calling them racial slurs to their face. Some people are truly disgusting. I have no interest in taking advantage of this human. They've been through enough and I certainly don't want to add to the list. The issue here is not only am I dealing with autism, I'm also dealing with PTSD from what they experienced in 2020. I'd like to help promote independence so one day they can live on their own, however also don't want to come off as cold, and I also don't want to coddle too much either. I'll happily take any advice I can get. 31:41 Skills and IBT Parents Useful Strategies for the Home, Educator Behavior management. RBT 2.0 Training Course Skills Phone Number 8779754559 10% of Any Skills Products 35:38 Hyper Fixation and Dependence of Routines how do I stop hyper fixation and dependence of routines. I just had a major major meltdown due to change of plans. How can this stop. I want to be there for my family and be normal but I hate this about myself. I'm in therapy now, I need ABA style intervention I think to stop this. 44:34 Fireworks are a Huge problem for my 6 Year Old Fireworks are a huge problem with my 6 yro son. Should we stay in this 4th of July? 50:44 What you should know about Senate Bill 358a (Oregon) 52:47 My son is 7 years old and diagnosed with autism. I see your videos in YouTube and I want to know how to get registered for ABA training to help my son? 55:49 Do you work virtually with families on the waiver? 57:47 How do you explain the diagnosis to your child and when would they understand?

Thank you. 9:50 Rocking back and Forth He likes to rocks back and forth on the sofa (we replace that with rocking chair) .He doesn't like anything on his hands or around his necklace (we tried chew tubes but he hates wearing any chews around His neck). He likes to throw thing and watch them and stim with his hands . He likes to Throw mud outside when he outside and all he wants to do is get the mud and throw that in backyard. We tried to replace with sand (different kind of) but it's not working. 22:04 How Can I Help My Roommate with Autism? I have a new roommate with autism.

Ask Evelyn Kung
Evelyn Kung, the Clinical Systems Manager for the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, joins us once again to discuss viewer questions. Check it out! 11:34 Reducing and Refraining Spitting: 3 year old non verbal son loves when you sing for him. He loves YouTube kids Cocomelon. He not given much screen time. When he does he spits on the iPad screen a lot. When you take it away from him and turn the show on TV he does the same thing. He does not always want chewy stixx or chewy necklace. He receives regular ABA, OT and speech services. Wondering if there other intervention procedures we could try to help him reduce or refrain from spitting? 17:48 Undesirable Tasks: Hello ladies.. how do I work on building the skill 'Sometimes I have to do things I don't want to do.' My 13 year old has it in his brain that except from school he doesn't need to do anything he doesn't like. For example, make his lunch, go outside and get fresh air, spend time with his family... We have let him have his way a few times and now he thinks that's how it always should be. He is very content sitting on the couch with his iPad. He is home schooled and doesn't have friends. He says no to almost every suggestion and we end up forcing him out of the house sometimes and he will say he had fun. We live in a beautiful state with lots to do! 29:51 Hand-Flapping: Hi. My son hand flaps only when he's overly excited. What do I do for that? 32:39 Meltdowns: I have custody of my 11, almost 12, year old grandson. I'm having trouble helping him calm down when he's approaching meltdown. I see it coming and I start using my soft directive tone reminding him to breath and giving simple directions but he absolutely fights me and tells me he can't calm down. I sometimes walk away and give him space and time, or offer hugs but nothing is working. I try to catch it early but I'm failing. Any suggestions? 38:40 Meltdowns with Nonverbal Children: (In response to the answer to the previous question) What if child is nonverbal??? 48:37 FREE IBT Courses Available Online: Parents: E-learning Parent Communication and Socialization + RBT 2.0 Training course free to parents on a case by case basis Educators: The Social Environment 51:55 Finger Sucking: How do it get my child to not suck his fingers ??. He is 8 years old and this is a health concern. He sucks fingers for comfort . He does not like chewy . He is nonverbal. 57:10 Schedule Fixation: My son get fixated on schedules. Even if he is doing what he likes outside home. If he has to be home at a certain time he wants to go home. How do I make him change his mind?
