Ask Dr. Doreen
In this episode of Ask Dr. Doreen, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders discusses speech in children with autism, sound therapy, repetitive movements and more. Check it out! 06:06 - Good morning Shannon and Dr. Doreen. My question is: Why does my 7 year old son not spontaneously comment on anything or shows initiation to communicate? He only talks when He needs something. I feel defeated because I have seen kids around his age with years of therapy already having conversations and saying how they feel but my son is not there yet. 10:43 - Free Skills Lesson, How to get started training with ABA Services, for Educators, Free "Starting to Teach" Lesson 14:46 – What is your opinion on Tomatis Method ( sound therapy) ? 22:31 - What is your opinion of stem cells as a treatment for autism? 24:13 - How would Dr. Doreen treat repetitive movements. its automatically reinforcing and hard for him to be aware of his movements. could you please tell us how you would reduce hand flapping behavior? its affecting his academics and he also has ADHD. Can you talk about continuing to follow a whole food diet and continuing organic and eating healthy. 35:41 - Do you find children diagnosed ASD has temperature regulation issues. I work with several individuals overheat easily and are constantly drinking water. Is there a condition for this? Other medical diagnoses have been ruled out such as diabetes and thyroid. 36:32 - I just found out that UCSD has a video game that's been FDA approved for ADHD treatment. Also helps some with autism. 39:32 - Do herbal remedies help? 40:51 - My oldest daughter turned 10 last week. She asked for a book on archaeology so that is what she got. Not an easy-to-read one like children's archaeology books, but really an overview of archaeology in more complex terms. It was a gamble, but she has been reading from it and from what I hear, she understands it as well. I should add, she is autistic. In her case, it makes it pretty tough to make social connections, but she is extra interested in subjects like math, history, and physics. My daughter hates fictional stories and thus she had a lot of trouble reading that book, which made the teacher believe she did well by taking the archaeology book away. Now, this happened more often. The teacher has taken away her math book, a card game she uses to practice image forming in her head (based on the memory palace technique, for those familiar with it), and she called my daughter childish for playing pokemon go. All things she likes to do, and I don't mind her doing them because she doesn't harm anyone with them. We had a talk about that with the school director as well, and it went fine for a while. But now with the archaeology book incident, the teacher decided that it was my fault. She came with all sorts of arguments aimed at how I should have pushed her to do things for her own age rather than let her find her own way. I have to say, it hurt me. She is my first daughter and I really try hard to do well, but I know that I make mistakes. Is this one of them? Am I really leaving her too free by letting her choose what she wants and likes? 47:44 - My son is 5 and I'm at a loss on how to change a particular behavior. He bangs his right hand on tables constantly and also claps his hands very hard, they sound like clap toys. It literally hurts my ears. The function is automatic. I've tried to replace the banging on the table with giving him bongs to bang on and he will only use it for a few seconds then goes right back to banging the table. Even worse than that is the clapping. I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do and I'm going crazy. I'm so overwhelmed with all the noise and the pitch of the noise. I know automatic function is the hardest behavior to change. Any ideas? Thank you very much. 54:52 - How can I stop my child 10 from watching weird videos like kids tantruming when I ask him he says I want to see how they react so I don't do that but that's exactly what he does.

Ask Dr. Doreen
It's time for another episode of Ask Dr. Doreen! Dr. Doreen, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders answers viewer questions about Potty Training, Apraxia and more! Check it out! Questions Below: 11:38 - Hi, We have been trying to potty train my son for couple for months now with help of ABA and now he can void when we take him but won't tell us when he has to go. He would have accidents if we don't take him. What will be your suggestion to get him to use toilet on his own or tell us when he needs to go so we can take him?1 24:41 - Hello ladies, I'm the mother of the 10yr old who had the dentist traumatic experience. Even though he's having better days and less self harming. He has become very obsessed with me, wanting to be with Me constantly, sometimes I'll be in the kitchen and he'll come breathing really hard and holds on from my arm, then I need to stop what I'm doing for safety reasons of course, if I'm riding in the Passenger side, while my husband drives he wants me to sit in the back with him, when I sit in the bank he starts holding on to me, sometimes I can finish my hose chores because he needs me with him What can I do to help him with anxiety, that doesn't require for me to be with him at all times? We finally have an appointment with the psychiatrist next Wednesday the 24th. Thanks in advance. 29:11 - When my child earns the iPad he watches the same video or weird videos his latest is Super nanny and he just repeats he tries to script it and use it into context it's weird when I told my supervisor they said have him wear headphones🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️it's his time. I pad is his highest reinforcer and if he is gonna watch something I don't want him to learn bad behaviors. He stems on these videos so bad. I don't think that was the best advice. Please help. The video says shut up, etc and he is saying that to adults. Please help. 35:12 - My 11 year old autistic son is obsessed with picking leaves, flowers, pulling full branches off of trees. How do we help end this behavior? 46:32 - Hello. Any tips on getting my shy, quiet, home schooled 7th grader to try new things? He has Autism and slow processing, but is on grade level. We are open to anything other than you tube videos. He says 'no' to pretty much anything and everything. No matter how short and effortless the activity is. He has no ideas of things he likes. We are desperate to expand his horizons! Thanks. 55:48 – How you can gain access to the following Free IBT Parent E-Learning Courses: "Overcoming Challenging Behaviors" and "Teaching Communication" 57:02 - Can the skills program help with apraxia of speech?

Ask Dr. Doreen
The founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh joins us to answer viewer questions! Check it out! Questions answered below: 8:22 - My brother (14) has autism and ADHD as well as some other things that aren't currently important. His special interest is cats. We have a few, and I understand that he likes talking about them, but every single conversation somehow delves into him talking about cats. I'm not being dramatic, you can ask him anything and his response will somehow be related to cats/delve into the conversation of cats. It's maddening. Earlier today I was trying to eat breakfast and he went off on some tangent about cat genetics. I was seriously trying to ignore him but for whatever reason it was just getting on my nerves. I hate that I have to go eat alone just so I can eat peacefully. I said, word for word, "Shut up, nobody cares about cats, its f****ing annoying," My parents saw red and my brother was quiet. We managed to finish breakfast before they said anything. Despite the fact that my parents were trying to burn holes into me with glares, it was honest to god the most peaceful breakfast I have ever had. They basically grounded me until they think I've learned my lesson so I'll probably be grounded until they forget I'm supposed to be grounded. They're calling me ablest while ignoring the fact that I'm struggling with him. I don't see why I have to put up with him all the time, I just want to eat with my parents in peace. But of course, that's not allowed because everything has to be comfortable for him. Despite the fact that I thought I was in the right at the time, they're making me feel really guilty and I'm having a pretty serious internal debate so I bring my query to you instead. Am I the a**hole? Just adding that I've tried asking politely several times in the past and he just ignores me. My parents also don't care on my feelings, they just want him comfortable so talking to them is useless. What should I do, I love him, but this is driving me up the wall. 22:44 - Follow up: an appointment with the psychiatrist hopefully not too many days after. He is now on 2mg of guanfacine since Sunday, since he was on 1mg for 4 weeks with no result.we will stay on guanfacin Until we can have an appointment with a psychiatrist and then maybe they can put him on Xanax. My question is. We took a break from zoom classes since he was having panic attacks and bad anxiety, It's been close to 3 weeks and he's still having them but I'm concerned that he will regress if we take a really long break. But it was really hard for him to do a few minutes of work with his anxiety 25:01 - How to deal with new aggression behavior he is hitting Pinching. He is using calm. He is 5 with ASD working on functional communication 41:31 - I have a 4.5 year old nonverbal son. Wanted to know how I can increase his joint attention. He's aware of his family and doesn't interact so much of us but also has separation anxiety so he wants us 44:49 - 3 year old in ABA, speech, OT has was allocated 24 hours ABA but she only sits through about 2.5 hours for 6 days a week approx 12. Started ABA in Oct 19 home based Aba providers keep changing With the provider due to turnover or scheduling changes how can I get consistency in ABA 3 year old does not mask so she cannot go to a center. Also how can I encourage more language she talks but Not in line with 3 year olds without ASD. She only talks to request things not for conversations or if I ask her a question she may or may not answer How is spontaneous 2-way communication developed right now I coach her how to respond to questions by modeling And writing because she reads 47:56 - We worked with CARD for many years to learn and support a now adult with ASD. Always lost and shocked as to what to say when I hear professionals who speak so negatively about ABA. Any advice? 53:51 - I'm currently changing providers because our supervisor said that increasing hours isn't going to help my son and added they are only here to teach us parents Aba 56:49 - Quinton is now constantly playing with his spit- he does it when he's bored, whiles he's playing after he gets "in trouble". It really doesn't matter what he's doing in the day he will play with it, its distracting him during bedtime and its giving me overload hearing him play with it in his mouth, it makes me want to gag. How do I extinct that behavior. He won't chew gum. i give him bubbles and playdough- but it's not working.
