Low teacher retention rates in schools negatively impact student achievement for all the students in a school, not just those in a new teacher’s classroom. This week’s guest, Dr. Joseph Jones and Dr. T.J. Vari, give precise strategies for motivating, inspiring, and energizing a staff. He is the co-author of Candid and Compassionate Feedback: Transforming Everyday Practice in Schools. Joe is a former high school teacher, assistant principal and principal. As principal, he was named the Delaware Secondary Principal of the Year and during his tenure, Delcastle Technical High School was the first high school to receive the state’s Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. Joe received his doctorate from the University of Delaware in educational leadership. He is also an adjunct professor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for various universities. About T.J. Vari: Dr. T.J. Vari is the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools and District Operations in the Appoquinimink School District. He is the co-author of Candid and Compassionate Feedback: Transforming Everyday Practice in Schools. T.J. is a former middle school assistant principal and principal and former high school English teacher. His master’s degree is in School Leadership and his doctorate is in Innovation and Leadership. He holds several honors and distinctions, including his past appointment as President of the Delaware Association for School Administrators and the Paul Carlson Administrator of the Year Award, which he accepted in 2015. He holds adjunct appointments at three universities, teaching courses at the masters and doctoral level. Together they present nationally on topics of school leadership, and they co-founded TheSchoolHouse302, which is a leadership development institute. They co-authored Candid and Compassionate Feedback: Transforming Everyday Practice in Schools. After two years of new educational practices, are we trying to get back to normal or a way to get better? This week’s guest, Tom Burton, shares how going back to the way things were is not the best mindset. In his district, during the pandemic, they uncovered many inequitable practices that needed to be addressed and they are determined to find better practices moving forward. In this episode, we also discuss: Creating diverse leadership teams Leading regardless of your title And partnering with businesses to serve the community About Tom Burton: Mr. Tom Burton is the Superintendent of Princeton City Schools, located just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Tom has been in administration since 1995 and has been in the Princeton district since 2015. He is the author of “Mark of Leadership: Strategies for Leading with Purpose, Plans, and Passion.” Additionally, Tom has written articles for publications both in Ohio and nationally and a columnist for Middle Ground Magazine. As superintendent, Tom lives out the Princeton mission to empower each student for college, career, and life success. He celebrates the achievements of all students. His Business and Community Partnership Quarterly Breakfasts connect students with business leaders and foster conversations about the students’ courses and interests generating conversations about post-high school education and occupations. Tom has been actively pursuing business/community partnerships and most recently hosted over 120 business community leaders at the quarterly breakfast. Along with a talented staff, he is proud of the major increase in participation and looks forward to hosting over 200 leaders in the near future.   Tom’s support for the recently passed Ohio Alternate Pathways for Graduation and newly created Princeton Work Ethics Certificate is addressing the needs of students entering the workforce after high school. In addition, Tom is encouraging internships at local businesses. “The business community is critical to Princeton as Princeton is critical to the business community. Working together we each ensure that the future is strong not only for the district and region but the state and country as well.”   In July 2021, Tom was elected as one of three new members of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's Educational Advisory Council. In this role, he will participate in discussions to help guide future strategies and inform the Education and Museum Outreach department's effectiveness. He will make recommendations, provide feedback, and perspectives on community outreach, engagement, programming, curriculum, and technology. Members are selected for this appointment for the value they place on the role of education, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.   He was named the 2018 Business Person of the Year through the Sharonville Chamber of Commerce. Further, Tom was the winner of NASSP/MetLife Ohio Middle School Principal of the Year, Distinguished Young Alumni Award from Slippery Rock University. Despite the fact that she never wanted to set foot in a school again after high school graduation, there is nowhere else she'd rather spend her days than in classrooms. In fact, she doesn’t even have a chair at her desk because she is moving around the school all day long. The challenges and delights of being a principal fill her days with joy. She enjoys nothing more than helping others be the very best they can be. Allyson is so proud of her school district and the Zeeland, MI community, and she loves being the principal of Quincy Elementary. She cannot imagine a more dedicated, passionate and skilled group of teachers. They elicit wonder, excitement and a love for learning in their students. Recognizing the significant impact trauma has had on many of our students, staff and families, Allyson is a Certified Trauma Practitioner in Education. The support that students affected by trauma need are beneficial to all students because they are grounded in a foundational core of strong, positive relationships based on trust. She is honored to serve on the Board of Directors for MEMSPA (Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association). Additionally, she is on the Steering Committee for MACUL (Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning) SIG-ADMIN. She recognizes the value of working with and learning from amazing educational leaders in both of these organizations. Allyson is the author of a blog called Serendipity in Education (allysonapsey.com) has written four books: a middle grades chapter book called The Serendipity Journal, a picture book called The Princes of Serendip, and two professional learning books for educators called The Path to Serendipity and Through the Lens of Serendipity. The world has and continues to change in ways that are difficult to predict. In addition, we discuss the latest book award she received and her new position. About Dr. Jill Siler:Dr. Jill Siler has been serving as the Superintendent of Gunter ISD, a growing school district an hour north of Dallas, since 2012. Jill grew up in Rochester & Buffalo, NY and completed her undergraduate work at the University of Pittsburgh where she was a collegiate swimmer. She moved to Austin in 1996 and began serving as a high school World Geography teacher and swim coach at John B. Connally High School in Pflugerville ISD. Jill earned her Masters from Texas State University and began her administrative career in Marble Falls ISD where she served as the Assistant Principal for Instruction. In 2004, Jill went to Lake Travis ISD where she served as a campus and district leader for 8 years. During that time, she completed her doctorate at the University of Texas.In her first months as a superintendent, Jill faced financial crisis along with many other challenges that leadership brings. In 2015, her school board was named a TASA Honor Board as one of the top 5 school boards in the state and one of her campuses was named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School. Jill is the Chair of the Future-Ready Superintendent Leadership Network (FRSLN) Design Team through the Texas Association of school Administrators (TASA) where innovative leaders from across the state gather to learn, share and grow together.Jill has a passion for helping others reach their goals and is the leader of TASA’s Aspiring Superintendent Academy, and a frequent speaker at Texas’ First-Time Superintendent Academy as well as other leadership and education conferences.
