This week’s guest, Matt Dunbar, shares how developing the foundational and essential skills of our students is important for their future success in our local communities. In this episode, we also discuss: Relationships and Cultural Competency Professional Growth culture And the Vision 25 Model About Matt Dunbar: As the East Hall Administrator at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, Matt Dunbar works daily to build lasting relationships through service, authenticity, and humor. A 2007 product of Franklin County High School, Matt returned in 2012 to teach World History and Government to 9th and 12th grade students. In 2015 he began his work with the Franklin County Public Schools Cultural Competence committee and helped to develop staff within that division through self-reflection and deep, intentional conversation. In 2017 Matt received his Masters from Virginia Tech in Educational Leadership and took an Assistant Principal position with Roanoke City Public Schools at William Fleming High School. While at Fleming, working under the incredible leadership of Archie Freeman, Matt used restorative practices to engage with students and better support the staff of Coulter Hall. He credits his year at William Fleming with developing him as a clear communicator and confident decision maker. After having a daughter in 2018 he returned to Franklin County as the 8th grade administrator at Benjamin Franklin Middle. While at BFMS, Matt has continued his work with the Cultural Competence committee, helped to develop the division's Profile of a Graduate, and Franklin County’s Vision25. Matt is married to Kelly, a 2nd grade teacher at Lee M. Waid Elementary and the division’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. As principal, he was named the Delaware Secondary Principal of the Year and during his tenure, Delcastle Technical High School was the first high school to receive the state’s Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. Joe received his doctorate from the University of Delaware in educational leadership. He is also an adjunct professor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for various universities. About T.J. Vari: Dr. T.J. Vari is the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools and District Operations in the Appoquinimink School District. He is the co-author of Candid and Compassionate Feedback: Transforming Everyday Practice in Schools. T.J. is a former middle school assistant principal and principal and former high school English teacher. His master’s degree is in School Leadership and his doctorate is in Innovation and Leadership. He holds several honors and distinctions, including his past appointment as President of the Delaware Association for School Administrators and the Paul Carlson Administrator of the Year Award, which he accepted in 2015. He holds adjunct appointments at three universities, teaching courses at the masters and doctoral level. After two years of new educational practices, are we trying to get back to normal or a way to get better? This week’s guest, Tom Burton, shares how going back to the way things were is not the best mindset. In his district, during the pandemic, they uncovered many inequitable practices that needed to be addressed and they are determined to find better practices moving forward. In this episode, we also discuss: Creating diverse leadership teams Leading regardless of your title And partnering with businesses to serve the community About Tom Burton: Mr. Tom Burton is the Superintendent of Princeton City Schools, located just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Tom has been in administration since 1995 and has been in the Princeton district since 2015. He is the author of “Mark of Leadership: Strategies for Leading with Purpose, Plans, and Passion.” Additionally, Tom has written articles for publications both in Ohio and nationally and a columnist for Middle Ground Magazine. As superintendent, Tom lives out the Princeton mission to empower each student for college, career, and life success. He celebrates the achievements of all students. His Business and Community Partnership Quarterly Breakfasts connect students with business leaders and foster conversations about the students’ courses and interests generating conversations about post-high school education and occupations. Tom has been actively pursuing business/community partnerships and most recently hosted over 120 business community leaders at the quarterly breakfast. Along with a talented staff, he is proud of the major increase in participation and looks forward to hosting over 200 leaders in the near future. &nbsp; Tom’s support for the recently passed Ohio Alternate Pathways for Graduation and newly created Princeton Work Ethics Certificate is addressing the needs of students entering the workforce after high school. In addition, Tom is encouraging internships at local businesses. “The business community is critical to Princeton as Princeton is critical to the business community. Working together we each ensure that the future is strong not only for the district and region but the state and country as well.” &nbsp; In July 2021, Tom was elected as one of three new members of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's Educational Advisory Council. In this role, he will participate in discussions to help guide future strategies and inform the Education and Museum Outreach department's effectiveness. He will make recommendations, provide feedback, and perspectives on community outreach, engagement, programming, curriculum, and technology. Members are selected for this appointment for the value they place on the role of education, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. &nbsp; He was named the 2018 Business Person of the Year through the Sharonville Chamber of Commerce. Further, Tom was the winner of NASSP/MetLife Ohio Middle School Principal of the Year, Distinguished Young Alumni Award from Slippery Rock University. Allyson is so proud of her school district and the Zeeland, MI community, and she loves being the principal of Quincy Elementary. She cannot imagine a more dedicated, passionate and skilled group of teachers. They elicit wonder, excitement and a love for learning in their students. Recognizing the significant impact trauma has had on many of our students, staff and families, Allyson is a Certified Trauma Practitioner in Education. The support that students affected by trauma need are beneficial to all students because they are grounded in a foundational core of strong, positive relationships based on trust. She is honored to serve on the Board of Directors for MEMSPA (Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association). Additionally, she is on the Steering Committee for MACUL (Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning) SIG-ADMIN. The world has and continues to change in ways that are difficult to predict.
