He has over twenty years of experience serving as a building level principal. Prior to being a school principal, he was an English teacher, department chair, and Assistant Principal. Evan is a recipient of the Horace Mann Educator of the Year Award. In addition, the NCTE Commission on Reading selected him to serve on its national board. A TEDx Speaker, Evan offers inspirational keynotes, workshops, and on-going professional learning opportunities across the country on leadership, mindset, culture, impactful change and how to improve literacy in schools. Evan has shared his ideas with thousands of educators at dozens of workshops across the country. His first book titled, The Principal’s Leadership Sourcebook: Practices, Tools, and Strategies for Building a Thriving School Community was published by Scholastic in the fall of 2007. His next book, The Ten- Minute Principal was published by Corwin in May 2019. About Rita Wirtz: Rita Wirtz served as Title I ESEA Program Evaluator in the California Penal System, Curriculum Coordinator for Sacramento County Office of Education, School Principal, Reading Instructor, K-Adult Teacher and Special Needs educator. She shared her experiences as Keynote Speaker and Seminar Leader traveling throughout the United States, inspiring other educators and parents. Mrs. Wirtz volunteered on numerous Boards in Sacramento, California, including Homeless Coalition, SARB (School Attendance and Review), Neighborhood Study Center, Fantasy Theatre, Harmony Arts, etc. She also volunteered for Homeschool groups, offering Keynotes and workshops on reading instruction. Rita taught about thirty needy children around her potbelly stove in their historic 1858 cabin house. Kids learned to read with Mark Twain maybe looking on. One student later graduated from a California University with Honors, and became a Space X rocket scientist! Rita wrote a book about teaching him. Rita Keynoted for a multitude of organizations including school districts, California School Boards Association, Chapman University Commencements, Child Welfare and Attendance, Migrant Education-Mini Corps, Kindergarten Conferences, Head Start, ASCD and CASCD, (Supervision and Curriculum groups). Also Mentor Teachers, Learning Disabilities Conferences, ECE (Early Childhood Education), Special Education SELPAS (service areas), etc. Mrs. Wirtz holds a BA in English and Speech, Reading Specialist, Masters in Reading, and Administrative Services Credential, pre-Adult. Because of her work with speed reading, she became a certified Hypnotherapist and NLP (Neurolinguistics) practitioner. Rita also studied “Brain Gym”, movement in learning. Rita is devoted towards helping other instructors by sharing extensive life affirming experiences. Through her ‘Housecalls' program, she demonstrated reading strategies demonstration lessons in nearly 600 classrooms, with all ages, preschool-adult. Walking the talk makes her a sought after personality, with rave reviews at each appearance. Besides teaching, her greatest love is writing. “Writing is like breathing.” She has written a number of books for parents and teachers including “Reading Champs, Teaching Reading Made Easy (2014), and published her Memoir “Stories From a Teacher’s Heart: Memories of Love, Life and Family” (2019). Rita’s newest book is “Reading Champions! Second Edition, Teaching Reading Made Easy!” (2021). About Amber Calderon: Amber attended Baylor University with a degree in Psychology & Rhetoric and Argumentation. During that time I worked alongside the Dean of Psychology as his research assistant. She decided to get certified to be a teacher and taught elementary for four years! During that time, Amber managed the suicide hotline and was a Sexual Assault Crime Victims Advocate for 6 years. While teaching, she quickly realized how lonely the profession was in addition to lack of resources. Amber started creating her own lesson plans and when searching Pinterest, discovered that there was a whole community of teachers just like her – wanting to make connections and build a digital community. These teachers were also making money from their lesson plans! She used my Psychology degree to leverage marketing tactics and made more than my teaching salary in my first year teaching! For the last 7 years, I’ve been involved with digital learning. I pride myself on always helping teachers get to the next step in their digital learning journey. Whether that means becoming proficient in a specific digital tool, an idea for making a lesson more meaningful for students, or ways to integrate more technology into the day to day classroom activities - I’m always willing to help however I can. My first 11 years I spent teaching high school social studies and the last six years I have been involved in digital learning. During my first five years teaching, I also coached boys athletics for the high schools I worked for. I have been in small schools with a population of about 150 to huge schools with a population of about 3,500 and have taught a variety of subjects from World Geography to AP World and US History. As I integrated more and more technology into my class, I became fascinated with the endless possibilities technology provided my students. Most transformative to me was how technology allowed my students to become the center of the learning process. My desire to encourage that kind of learning environment is what led me into my role in digital learning. Personally, I have been married to the most amazing wife ever, Katie, since 2009 and we have the two best kids ever, Eva and Cyrus. I live for my family and we do so much for each other.
