#333: In-Person Convo w/ Gabriele Grunewald, Pro Runner (+ Rare-Cancer Survivor)
Sarah and Dimity chat with pro runner Gabriele “Gabe” Grunewald in front of a room full of mother runners at the recent Twin Cities Marathon expo. Gabe is a nine-year cancer survivor and a local runner. Like any good Minnesotan (including recent guest Kara Goucher), Gabe mentions “hot dish” in her very first answer and explains why she adores the “dedicated and ambitious” Twin Cities running community. The middle-distance runner details her love of racing the mile and running on the track. “I love spiking up,” she says. Gabe takes listeners back to her 2009 diagnosis when she was a 22-year-old college track athlete. Gabe details the mission of her foundation, Brave Like Gabe, and shares about the genesis of the name. Acknowledging that every cancer journey is different, Gabe discusses the importance of having goals and continuing to move forward—and how she plans for races in three-month chunks of time. A marathon runner and triathlete, Kim is founder of We Finish Together, a grassroots group passing along medals to people in challenging situations. Kim shares how she’s rewritten the rules about being sick, including running two marathons and a 50K (!!) post-diagnoses. The inspiration Grit + Grace Enduro socks by Balega, Kim talks about the importance of passing on kindness, including in the starting corral of a race. Moments before beginning to record the show, Kim shared with the hosts that she is headed into hospice. Let’s make a spark by showing some extra kindness this month. Sarah Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell dive into this math-heavy episode with Martha’s question about cadence, suggesting she think “quick-light, quick-light.” (A heck of a lot easier than counting to 90!!) The duo reminds marathoner-and-beyond Beth there are elements that can make a runner father than speedwork. In answering a question from first-time-marathoner-in-training Pam, the BAMRs talk about the mental side of 26.2-training with Dim offering the lovely imagery of a training plan“stair-stepping you up there.” Britt asks about “leg day,” opening up a conversation about strength training. #331: 3X Ironman Triathlon World Champion (+ New Mom) Mirinda Carfrae
Sarah is fortunate enough to have a one-on-one conversation with three-time Ironman champ Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae thanks to AMR’s friends at GU Energy Labs. A mother of a one-year-old daughter, Rinny shares how her workouts changed while she was pregnant, summed up best as, “I exercised, I didn’t train.” Rinny tells how she was “really conservative” resuming running post-partum and building up her mileage and intensity, including occasional stroller-runs. Chuckle along when the Ironmother says her recovery is chasing after her daughter—and how she wouldn’t change it for the world. When the conversation shifts to nutrition, it’s mainly about juggling breastfeeding sessions with training ones, but eventually the conversation works its way round to Rinny revealing her current favorite GU products and flavors as well as how she utilizes them during workouts and races. Eventually the conversation loops around to the upcoming race in Kona, and how Rinny is facing the prospect of racing against new talent there. “I’m excited; I’m nervous. I’m not sure how I’ll feel.” Sarah is joined by Dimity for the intro convo, which involves tall-Dimity talking about orange, too-long-for-her (!!) jeans she’s been eyeing and the duo laughing over Dim’s assessment of the first-world problem of, “when your van is cooler than your jeans.” The Mirinda Carfrae interview starts at 13:40. #330: Find Your Athletic “Happy Place”
Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin (fresh back from Chamonix, France, where she got to spectate the UTMB ultra race!!) talk with a variety of guests about having an athletic “happy place.” First they admit what their happy places are, then they bring on the expert, Dr. Justin Ross, a Denver-based psychologist and marathon runner, who starts off by assuring Sarah the show’s topic isn’t, in her word, “cockamamie!” Instead, he defines an athletic happy place as, “something that provides connection to self, sport, and community.” (Phew!) The good doc goes on to explain folks can have an internal and an external happy place. Find out why some people’s happy places might even seem contradictory to the whole “happy” bit. (Which leads to one of his best lines: “Adult things suck.”) He talks about the health-bolstering effects of water and forests. Michelle San Antonio, a mother runner of three who has run the Boston Marathon several times, shares how her happy “place” is actually a mindset and how it has evolved drastically over the last five years. The trio bond over Michelle’s simple-yet-powerful statements of, “My life has changed, so my running has changed.” And “I still race and give it my all. My ‘all’ just isn’t what it used to be.” (If you listen closely, you can hear SBS + Amanda nodding vigorously during this part of the show!) Exit Michelle, enter Casii Dodd, a soon-to-be-grandma of twins (!), whose happy place is on trails, explaining they help her unlug and “be in the step.” Casii talks about how time on the trail and technique tips gleaned from local runners has helped her feel much more comfortable and confident on technical trails. Find out how rain has entered into her mental feel-good place. Definitely an episode with much to ponder! Sarah Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell counsel Kathy on how to get out of a mental slump while she waits for her next training cycle to kick off. (For a doozy of a race: Three Days at the Fair!) On the flipside of that scenario, Molly suffers from FOMO while training for the Kansas City Marathon, to which Dimity shares a mother runner truism: “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.” (One social event Molly won’t be missing out on: the AMR Podcast recording party in KC on October 17. Join the fun, too!) Speaking from experience, Dimity and Sarah offer advice to Maureen on grappling with the mental and emotional side of an injury. (Here’s where to connect with the Injured BAMRs Facebook page.) Find out what phrase Dimity tosses out that gives Sarah absolute delight. Finally, in response to Kimberly’s question, the duo share suggestions on balancing the social demands of a running group. Kara confesses to being “very emotional” and admits she previously viewed that attribute as a weakness. Listen to how her thoughts on that—and other things--changed as she crossed the threshold into her 40s this year.Dimity unpacks “I deserve to be here,” a powerfully motivating phrase for Kara. Find out what “Enclothed Cognition” is and how it helps remind Kara when it’s “go-time.” Learn how Kara approaches tough workouts and which workouts give her the most confidence. Returning to a topic brought up in the show with Kara’s former training partner Shalane Flanagan, Sarah gets Kara to overshare about peeing on the fly. Kara also shares details of her new tattoo. #328: AMR + Best of Both Worlds Podcast Crossover Episode
Sarah has a virtual sit-down with the two women behind the Best of Both Worlds Podcast, Laura Vanderkam and Sarah Hart-Unger, M.D. Both Laura and “SHU” are mother runners, and the trio was delighted this special episode was a suggestion from a listener of both pods. The BBW duo turn the tables, getting SBS to answer questions about the start of AMR and her own running-and-racing background. The Sarahs conceive a brilliant plan for SHU’s first post-baby marathon. Laura and SBS bond over exercise streaks, and Laura details her the intriguing inspiration of her 600+-day running streak. The trio debate the beautiful necessity of morning workouts, then they offer opinions and advice on balancing parental work-related screentime around offspring. #318: 6th Annual Summer Reading Podcast!
Sarah and co-host Ellison convene for what is one of their favorite days of the year: the recording of AMR’s annual summer reading episode! But the duo soon realizes it should be labeled a pop culture show, as they take frequent tangents to discuss their current favorite British TV shows (“Crashing” for SBS; “The Split” for Ellison) and new podcasts Sarah is listening to (“The RFK Tapes” and “The Gateway”). Speaking of podcasts, Ellison shares why her show, “The Book Bully,” has been on hiatus. When the conversation dwells on books (starting at 16:15), the recommendations run the gamut, from Scandinavian noir to several “quirky” novels to a novel with a “meta” conceit both SBS and E adored! #316: Special Father’s Day Episode 2018
Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin sit down with three father runners to get a look inside their lives. From early morning workouts to crying at the end of a race, the guys aren’t all that different from the gals. First up is Ty Francis, a trail runner/triathlete and a divorced dad of three young sons. A physical therapist, Ty tells why he adopted a guiding principle of training everyone should consider following. He also reveals why he had to let go of feeling competitive. Discover why he spent 22.5 hours on a bike—the reason will tug on your parental heart strings. Next, father of two Michael Goff joins the conversation. A newbie runner, Michael quickly describes himself as “athlet-ish, not athletic.” Laugh along with SBS and Coach Amanda as Michael explains why he doesn’t allow himself to go on Strava until at least an hour after a run. Courtesy of Michael, you’ll learn more acronyms (BRC; VBRF; BADR) to add to your vocab (in addition to BAMR). Michael is the first of two dads to admit to crying at a running race—the other one is the third guest, David Yonker. This Iowan father of two tells how he became an avid runner because of his wife. A pastor, David confesses a simple-but-clever trick he sometimes employs to catch his breath on a run. He talks about how he and his wife take turns with training cycles and workout times. Find out how the mighty Mississippi River factors into David’s life—as well as a fond fatherly memory of SBS. In the introduction, Sarah and Amanda reminisce about the eerily similar athletic lifestyles of each of their recently deceased fathers, and how these strong men influenced their own sporty lives. #315: Rediscover Joy in Running
Sarah and co-host Maggie Palmer have a conversation aimed at putting a pep in your step: They talk with two mother runners who work to help others find joy and acceptance in fitness activities. The first in-studio (ooh!) guest is Gwen Sullivan, one of the founders of Joyn, a platform promoting “group classes for movement and joy.” This mother of two explains how runs with her then-6-year-old son planted the seed for Joyn. Gwen explains how the platform is an invitation to take part in fitness—and why they aim for classes with “head-tilt” names. Next up in studio is Sarah Foote, a Portland-based coach who leads free classes that are part of Joyn. Hear how a post-50K race high set up this mom of two to injury, then the founding of the super-cool Wy’east SisterHood. She shares how she added joy back to her runs when they were becoming a grind. Speaking of: Find out why she had a pity-party in the middle of her first 50-mile race—and what pulled her out of it. You’ll nod and laugh along with SBS over much of what these two guests say, such as when Sarah admits: “I want to do things my kids think is kinda crazy.” In the intro, Maggie and SBS talk about their temporary solo-parenting stints, and Sarah gives a plantar fasciitis update. The first guest enters the conversation (and the studio) at 19:40. Listen in to the sitdown Sarah and Dimity had with Coach Amanda Loudin and Dr. Justin Ross at the recent AMR Run + Refresh Retreat in Ogden, Utah. Recorded in front of mother runners who were hours away from running the Ogden Marathon, the experts share mental and physical tips for performing your best in a race. The quartet share personal anecdotes of when they turned around a flagging race effort, and the coaches offer numerous tips on how to pull yourself out of a negative “valley” mid-race. Whether you utilize the experts’ advice in an upcoming race or tuck it into your tiny keypocket for later use, we guarantee you’ll take away helpful nuggets. #313: How to Find Your Ideal Running Race
Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin are joined by Coach MK Fleming of the Train Like a Mother Club to discuss how to choose a great running race for you. The trio covers a variety of considerations, such as geography, weather, terrain, crowd size, corral policies, and more. Coach MK shares when it’s smart to adjust your expectations. The ladies’ opinions about downhill races might surprise you. Coach Amanda stresses the importance of knowing yourself and what kind of runner you are when it comes to tolerating inclement weather conditions. Laugh along with SBS at MK’s “ultraviolet sandwich” analogy. Learn that “good enough” is often pretty awesome, and find out why MK is a proponent of extra-long training plans. Garner valuable insight about some banner races, including NYC, Marine Corps, Big Sur, and Richmond marathons. Here are the two race-review sites SBS recommends: BibRave and RaceRaves. In the intro, Sarah and Amanda rehash Ogden Retreat memories (including karaoke!) and SBS talks TSwift concert. Adrienne shares the story of her 6-minute “accidental” PR in a recent half-marathon. Laugh over Maggie’s tale of her 3-year-old son and his valiant maneuver to protect his grandmother. Then Adrienne and Maggie bow out to make room for Coach Amanda and Dr. Justin Ross, who talk about the physical (Amanda) and mental (Justin) side of tapering. #311: 2018 Olympic Champion—and #Motherrunner—Kikkan Randall
Celebrating Mother's Day, Olympian style, Dimity (standing in for for host Sarah) and co-host Tish Hamilton connect with cross-country skier Kikkan Randall, the only mother on the 2018 U.S. Winter Olympic team—and, along with teammate Jessie Diggins, the first American woman ever to win an Olympic gold cross-country skiing. The trio first hits Kikkan's background as a runner (and her nearly sub-five-minute mile in high school!) and her transition to—and rapid ascent as a top world competitor on—the snow. We discuss her 20-year (!) Olympic career, and the long-term perspective she took—especially helpful when she missed her 2014 Olympic goal by .05 seconds. Along the way, you'll learn what a "make-it-count" workout with her mom is; you'll get goosebumps as you hear her talk through her Olympic gold medal race; and realize that even though she has recently retired, she'll always be Fast and Female. Kikkan is introduced at 21:23.In the introduction, Dimity + Tish talk Mother's Day plans (or lack thereof), the upcoming swim team seasons for their kiddos, and why a Mother's Day coupon for ice cream will never go out of style. Thanks to 1800Flowers, you can order 24 Multicolored Roses, plus a free vase, for only $29.99. #310: Running Through Grief
Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin have heart-to-heart conversations with four women runners who have suffered losses—and used running to help process their emotions and heal. A heavy topic, for sure, but the ladies still share some smiles + laughs. Marge Schupe shares the story of her two miscarriages, explaining how running helped her get back in touch with her body and see it as something other than “a complete failure.” Proof positive: Since last summer, she’s PR’d in 5K, 10K, and 13.1-mile races. Marge gives advice for dealing with a miscarriage. Next is Patti Cruz, who suffered numerous losses, including a one-two punch: the death of her father from cancer, then her mother being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. As a mom of two young sons, Patti defines herself as part of the “ultimate sandwich generation.” She discusses how running is a “coping skill” for her; Patti stresses the importance of taking time for exercise when dealing with the weight of grief or caring for a family member, saying it is a “luxury” to have that protected time to let out sadness and grief. Susan Heard, the third guest, opens up about why the podcast-recording date is bittersweet for her. Now a mere 10 days out from her first marathon, Susan tells the story of how witnessing a cousin run 100 miles helped her become a runner 4+ years after the death of her son from cancer. She talks movingly about how running and cycling outdoors helps her see and hear her son, as well as how running solo allows herself to “take out the grief pieces that are hard to look at.” The episode culminates with Gina Ebbeling, an AMR BAMRbassador whose husband, Jason, died suddenly in January 2017. She tells of running a special Mother’s Day half-marathon in honor of her husband. A mother of a 7-year-old daughter, Gina delves into a broader definition of self-care. Marvel along with SBS and Amanda at Gina’s process of self-discovery in the aftermath of her profound loss. And learn a new word—“rawity”—along the way. In the introduction, Sarah shares the delight of witnessing unbridled joy + talent in three school dance performances. Then Amanda and Sarah discuss their own recent losses and how exercise provides a welcome chance to feel close to a departed loved one. The first guest is introduced at 11:14. #309: Tips for Traveling to “Away” Running Races
Sarah and co-host Molly pick the brains of three experienced runners who have not only raced 1,000s of miles, but have traveled across the U.S. and around the globe to do it! First up is Katie Ho, co-founder of RaceRaves, an online community/app that she dubs “TripAdvisor but for races.” Katie gives loads of advice, including packing tips and how to choose the best “away” race for you. Katie, Molly, and SBS chew on the topic of food while away from home, especially pre-race eats. Next is Sandi Borgman, a repeat AMR Podcast guest who’s run half- and full marathons in places as far flung as Iceland, Berlin, and Paris. Sandi quickly tosses out one of the best quips ever, involving being on vacation with a person who’s tapering. She quickly outdoes that gem with a cautionary tale about lubing up mid-race with what she thought was Vaseline. (Ouch!!) Despite having run all the World Marathon Majors(minus Tokyo), Sandi sings the praises of opting for away 13.1-mile races rather than 26.2-mile ones. A veteran of 20 marathons (!!) in her 10 years of running, Sandi shares brilliant on-course advice. The final guest is Lorelei Suehrstedt. (Caution: Don’t trip when you hear how many races (half-marathons, marathons, and ultras) in the five years she’s been running!) Lorelei lets rip a fabulous one-liner about mouth breaking, when she suggests thinking about various race conditions when choosing a destination race. This road warrior gives loads of great advice about both driving and flying to races. The trio talk about the importance of looking at the cost of the entire race trip, and Lorelei offers sage tips about booking accommodations. And laugh at talk of supportive spouses, including finding out who “Saint Craig” is.In the intro, Molly teaches Sarah a new (for SBS) mash-up: “proma.” The first guest joins the convo at 17:18.For a vehicle that’s perfect for road trips + friendlier to the environment, check out the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. #308: Author Jay Dicharry Tells How to Be a More Durable Runner
Sarah and Dimity have a sit-down with Jay Dicharry, a well-respected sports psychologist, biomechanics expert, and author of the recently released Running Rewired: Reinvent Your Run for Stability, Strength & Speed. A lightbulb will go off when Jay makes an analogy involving 400-pound snatches in CrossFit to explain why runners get injured. The trio discuss how to develop as an athlete, not just a runner, and Jay posits we are adapted to run, not born to run. He stresses the importance of being a more dynamic, diverse, and durable runner—then goes into detail on how to achieve that aim. This leads to a conversation about the importance of taking care of all of you, not just your heart and lungs. For Sarah, Jay convincingly debunks the adage, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” There’s talk about the joy of seeing progress in the weight room, then Jay details exercises and drills to make you move smarter. Jay shares a realistic Rx on how often to do certain types of moves to enjoy lifelong success in running. Nuun-chug word for this episode: bear crawl. In the intro, laugh as Dimity tells a tale of the Petites in Pilates, then listen to the two tall co-hosts debate the difference height makes in cycling and fitness studios. #307: Boston Marathon 2018
Sarah and co-host Tish Hamilton, both veterans of the venerable Boston Marathon (SBS = 2x; Tish = an astounding 13!), aren’t running the race on Monday, April 16, but their four guests will be part of the action! First up is Jesse Blondin, who’ll be running the route from Hopkinton to Boston for her second time. Marvel as she describes doing the majority of her workouts are runs to and from her Ottawa office! She shares all the logistics involved, plus she talks about the importance of yoga to her running. Laugh along with Sarah as Jesse reveals what a “pre-shower” is. Next is Suzanne Adams, who’s run the Boston Marathon twice, but this year she’s volunteering instead of running—as well as helping coordinate a team of charity runners. On this, the five-year anniversary of the bombings, Suzanne and Tish both open up about their experiences from those horrific events. A longtime volunteer, Suzanne shares spectator tips. The next guest is Andrea Hennigan: This year’s Boston will be her seventh marathon, but the first she’s run as part of a fundraising team. Hear how she overcame the intimidation factor to sign up as a charity runner—and how homemade keyfobs entered into the equation. In addition to revealing how the team aspect of training for a cause takes the connection to a deeper level, Andrea details her creative fundraising efforts. The trio talks about the logistical challenges of a later-start marathon like Boston. Last but certainly not least is Kerry Cosneau, who’s running her first Boston Marathon after six attempts to qualify. Hear how this BAMR discovered her inner speed demon after age 40. She tells how the treadmill honed her speed and a pace group helped her reach her BQ time—a 16-minute PR! Join Sarah and Kerry on a quick side trip to the Paris Marathon. #306: The Effect of Social Media on Running
Sarah and co-host Maggie talk with two guests about pros and cons social media can have on running. First up: Kelly Roberts, who burst onto the scene when she shared hilarious selfies she surreptitiously snapped of herself + hot guys during a half-marathon. Now an influencer and proponent of body positivity, Kelly provides insight and inspiration on She Can and She Did. Kelly shares how she used to hide her life story because it was tied to shame, but no more! The trio discusses the importance of being proud of where you’re at now—and of showing up and giving your all. Lots of laughs and TMI talk, including a story of epic chafing from a sports bra on a recent 16-mile run in Kelly’s quest to BQ or Bust. Then Molly Ritterbeck, Training, Fitness, & Health Director for Runner's World and Bicycling. (Phew: a mouthful!) Molly, Maggie, and SBS discuss the double-edged sword that is social media. Molly steers the conversation toward an examination of extrinsic versus intrinsic motivation, and how those are affected by online opportunities. The three examine the critical importance of honesty. The theme of “Facebook fiction” runs throughout this thought-provoking episode. In the intro, Maggie shares life updates (hint: her family will soon, once again, be on the move), and she and SBS envision a sketch cartoon entitled “If This Minivan Could Talk.” Kelly arrives on the scene at 16:36. #305: Author Alex Hutchinson on Mental Endurance
Sarah and co-host Tish Hamilton enjoy a quick catch-up, and Tish tells the tale of her spring break PR. (Psst: It involves location, not time!) Alex Hutchinson, author of the newly released ENDURE: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance, joins the conversation to talk about mental endurance and the power of the mind. In calming tones, Alex explains limits are negotiable and the importance of getting out of your own way. From “the base of the mountain,” he talks about how to become aware of the internal monologue you have with yourself on a run—and how to reframe that “conversation” to enhance self-belief. Nod along as Alex discusses the “deeply worn grooves in your mind.” Validation that the mere perception of mental fatigue (sigh) can affect a run leads to an intriguing pre-race suggestion. Sarah and Alex discuss the timing of when to work out, with Alex offering a practical point sure to resonate with mother runners. He offers many bits of running advice that apply for everyday life, including singing the praises of running with someone. Nuun-drinking game: Chug every time any of the trio says, “South Africa.” Alex Hutchinson comes on board at 10:12. She shares “grandma tips” for improving sleep along with recommending a great online resource. The trio talk about anemia—the various types, as well as the cures. It’s Heart Health Month, so Sarah and co-host Molly discuss how the topic relates to runners with Dr. Ann Marie Navar, a cardiologist and epidemiologist with Duke University School of Medicine. The trio immediately dives into the deep end, addressing whether long-distance running is good—or bad—for your ticker. The doctor tells how to reduce risk factors for heart attacks, which leads to an intriguing discussion about cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins. Answering questions from BAMRs on the AMR Facebook page, Ann Marie explains what’s up with heart palpitations. During a talk about heart rate, the cardiologist offers up the reassuring gem of, “normal is variable.” Nutrition questions are interwoven throughout the convo, including advice about coconut oil. The good doc informs us high-intensity interval training (HIIT) might be better for your heart than previously thought, and she ends on an all-important message for mother runners. The Portland duo then welcome Marla Sewall, a Dallas mother of four who was brought back to life by her quick-acting husband after she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. #Motherrunner Marla shares her harrowing story—and her amazing recovery (hint: It involves running a half-marathon a mere four months after her heart stopped for 15 minutes!). Sarah is joined in studio for a special conversation with Trisha Swanson, founder of Reason to Run, a training program designed to encourage and support both new and experienced runners who are incarcerated at the Oregon state women’s correctional prison, plus Mimi Clinton, a mother runner who was in the program in 2016. Trisha and Mimi detail the 8-week Bunk to 5K program that has inmates circling a 0.1-mile loop in the prison yard—or doing burpees on indoor days. Mimi describes what it was like to always have people—including prison guards--watching her run her first steps. She talks about how she found strength in the community of women in the program—and continues to experience the positive effects of the running community since her release. Marvel as Mimi describes in vivid detail her “glorious” first post-prison run. Tear up along with Mimi when she admits, “it takes someone else to believe in you to remind you that what we tell ourselves isn’t true.” The trio agree on the barrier-breaking power of running and the activity’s ability to provide a few moments of peace from a chaotic setting.Dimity + Sarah catch up in the intro, talking about fur-babies + their human kiddos. #296: Bart Yasso Talks Races + Retirement with Another New Co-Host
Sarah delights in being joined by another new co-host: Tish Hamilton, former executive editor at Runner’s World and multi-time marathoner. The two mother runners re-tell the genesis story of Another Mother Runner, as Tish assigned the article that got this party started. Then the duo welcomes Bart Yasso, who takes a break from packing up his Runner’s World office-of-three-decades to be a guest on the pod for a third time. (Here are his two earlier appearances.) Drawing on experiences chronicled in his latest book, Race Everything, Bart describes the elements of what he thinks makes a great race. He raves about multi-day races, including the Bermuda Marathon Triangle Challenge, which he had just returned from, and shares advice on running such races. This accomplished runner shares his take on how to achieve a negative split, the Holy Grail of racing. Talk with the three Masters-age runners turns to accepting the inevitable slowing down that comes with age—with a caveat from Bart about why he was a better runner in his 40s than in earlier years. The lively conversation ends with Bart explains the importance of keeping running fun. Bart joins the conversation at 17:25. #295: Meet Our Newest Co-Host
Sarah welcomes one of two new co-hosts (big reveal of other new one happens next week!), Maggie Palmer, a thirty-something mom of three. Asomewhat familiar voice to podcast listeners and blog readers, Maggie is the BAMR whose family lived through Hurricane Irma on Saint Maarten, three weeks after relocating to the Caribbean from Oregon. Listen to an update on Maggie’s family situation in Chicago, plus how working out is working out for her these days. Maggie reveals how her “monthly plight”—and her male high school track coach’s attitude toward her period—sidelined her from running. Find out why she ran a half-marathon on the aptly named holiday of Independence Day. Along with sharing many laughs, Sarah and her new co-host bond over falling while trail running (spoiler alert: both tales involve horse poop!).Get 25% off your first order at RXbar.com/amr and use promo code AMR Learn more about your ad choices. #294: The Truth about Marathon Training
Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin, veterans of nearly 30 marathons between them, pull back the curtain and reveal best practices about training for a 26.2-mile undertaking. They start slowly with the importance of rest and underappreciated “easy” runs. Coach Amanda lays out what’s an appropriate base for marathon training, both in terms of how long you can run—and how long you’ve been running. She talks about the optimum length of a training cycle and the best number of days to run per week, plus variables that affect both elements. Serving up a dose of reality (and wit!), Coach Amanda tells why “couch-to-marathon” isn’t a smart move. She also shares why long runs are cornerstone of marathon training. (It’s not quite as “no, duh!” as you might think.) Invariably, the two Masters-age marathoners discuss how marathon training morphs as you age. The insightful conversation culminates with sage advice on sidestepping injury.First, though, the mother runners have a silly debate about the ideal stopping-point for number of marathons. At 16:45, Amanda puts on her coaching hat and the advice-filled portion of the pod starts. To enjoy three free Daily Harvest cup, go to daily-harvest.com and use promo code AMR Learn more about your ad choices. #293: Training Tips + Advice from Three Coaches
Sarah and Dimity welcome three coaches to kick your New Year off right! First up is Jenn Gill, who is a certified personal trainer and strength coach in addition to being a running coach (phew!). After telling a tale of a recent Ragnar Trail Relay race that involves “swamp bugs” and a 15’ alligator (!!), Jenn shares the keys to consistency and how to make exercise a habit. She also offers several good reasons why strength training should be part of every runner’s regimen. Next the ladies are joined by Justin Ross, a sports and performance psychologist who developed the Perform Like a Mother program. Like he does in that mental skills training program, Justin offers guidance on using your mind as an asset instead of a liability, while running, racing, or living life. Listen as Sarah gets swayed by his sound advice about cultivating a positive mindset. The final guest is Jennifer Harrison, one half of the triathlon coaching duo in the TLAM Club. This mom-of-twins tells an inspiring story about what can happen when you go into a race with no expectations. Learn how the first-of-its-kind Ironman training program (!!) is like a pregnancy. Nod along as Coach Jen stresses the importance of having a “village” of support to get through training; laugh along when she recounts the stupidest question she’s ever been asked. (Spoiler: GU Gel is not fish food!) She ends with a bit of advice we all need to be reminded of. In the intro, hear Dimity share the joy of “following someone else’s bubbles.” The conversation with coaches kicks off at 24:16.Get your free quote today at healthiq.com/AMR or mention promo code AMR (or Another Mother Runner) when you talk to a Health IQ agent.
