It's more than just books at aadl.org!The Ann Arbor District Library Introduces Its New Mascot: Akako G. ShinsThe Ann Arbor District Library has introduced its very own mascot, Akako G. Shins! The creation of artist Jason Driscoll (Kill Taupe), AADL staff, and Loonie Times Custom Mascots, Akako is a groundhog (woodchuck, marmot, Marmota monax) who works at the Library, loves coming to AADL events, and is always excited to meet new people. The mascot’s name comes from a word in Ojibwe: akakojiishiins, which means “little groundhog.” They debuted at AADL’s Game Over Gala in August and made appearances at this past weekend’s A2CAF: Small + Indie Press and Dead Media Day. Akako plans to make future appearances at AADL events, festivals, and expos, including the AADL Halloween Costume Contest (October 26), AADL’s Halloween Show (October 31), A2 Community Bookfest (November 9), WAPUR (December 6), and Tiny Expo (December 13).A full list of appearance dates and times, along with more information about Akako G. Shins, is available at aadl.org/akakogshinsEdmund FitzgeraldFifty years ago one of the worst storms in Great Lakes history caused the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The tale was popularized by the Gordon Lightfoot song and lives on today. Come to the Downtown Library on Thursday, October 16 from 6-7:30pm to hear the stories of the crew, their families, and the tale of the doomed ship and hear the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald performed live by Mike Fornes.SPAMIn our latest installment of the Culinary Historians of Ann Arbor, Dr. Kelly Spring, a food researcher and lecturer, will be at the Downtown Library on Sunday, October 19 from 4-5:30pm to do a little PR for a food item we've all heard of but I'm sure not everyone has tried—SPAM! Why does it have such negativity surrounding it? Dr. Spring takes on the five primary myths about SPAM, then talks about its creation, production, history, and consumption. SPAM! THE WONDER FOOD! The Croswell is located at129 E. Maumee St.Adrian, MIPurchase tickets today at: https://croswell.org/Or call 517-264-SHOWBonnie & ClydeOctober 17 – October 26This cult-favorite Broadway musical retells the unbelievable true story of America’s most infamous couple, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the ill-fated lovers and outlaws whose story has been legendary since they achieved folk hero status during the Great Depression. In existence for more than 150 years, the Croswell is the oldest theater in Michigan and one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the United States.Named for Charles M. Croswell, an Adrian resident and the 17th governor of Michigan, the Croswell has seen more than its share of history. In addition to some of the greatest actors of the 19th century — Edwin Booth, Maude Adams, Otis Skinner, Mrs. Patrick Campbell — it hosted legendary bandmaster John Philip Sousa, not to mention important political figures like Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. In the early part of the 20th century, the Croswell became a movie theater, a role it would fill for about 50 years. If you talk to longtime Adrian residents, you’ll find that many memories were made during those days, creating emotional bonds with the Croswell that survive to this day. Ep 122a2VV: HSHV Pet of the Week 10/9/25
Meet the HSHV Pet of the week at https://www.hshv.org/petsoftheweek-2/😻 This week's Pet of the Week from the amazing folks at HSHV is a cat who's ready to jump into your life (and probably onto your couch) and declare, "I live here now!"Torta is social, snuggly, and confident—basically, the feline version of that friend who instantly makes your party better. 🎉Now, Torta is Feline Leukemia (FeLV) positive. Think of it this way: she has a little extra something special that means she needs a specific type of home (ideally one without other feline friends, or with other FeLV-positive cats). It's a serious virus for other kitties, but it's not contagious to people or other pets, and it definitely doesn't stop her from having a blast and giving endless love! She’s a sweet girl with a whole lot of life and purrs left in her. ❤️Ready to make this little firecracker your co-pilot? Get all the details by calling HSHV at (734) 662-5585 or filling out an adoption survey online! She's spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and 100% ready for her close-up! 📸Pet of the Week is sponsored by Mighty Dog RoofingAll the animals available for adoption through the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on their vaccinations and have a microchip I.D. which is included in their affordable adoption fee.
