The Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 6) #63 – REVIEW
It’s insane that it took 64 years to get the first issue of Amazing Spider-Man that’s both written by a woman and legitimately good. That’s in no way the fault of women. Mark and Dan discuss Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 6) #63. This issue was written by Justina Ireland. The cover features artwork by Ed McGuinness and Marcio Menyz. The interior pages feature artwork by Gleb Melnikov, colors by Marcio Menyz, and, of course, letters by VC’s Joe Caramagna. This issue was first released on December 11th, 2024, although it is important to note that shops were hit with more delays by Diamond, and so many received their books late. This episode was edited by Rick Coste. The video version of this podcast was edited by Alex Galucki. Our artwork is handcrafted by artists Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema, Chris Sutcliffe, and Nick Cagnetti. But, his most championed work, at least amongst 90s Spider-Man fans, is the underread Sensational Spider-Man, where he worked alongside the legendary artist Mike Wieringo to tell his own ongoing story of our favorite webspinner. What We Learned From Our Cody Ziglar Interview
Mark and Dan discuss the recent interview that Dan did with Cody Ziglar, which had a small side-effect of breaking the internet and forcing Marvel Studios to comment on some of the revelations in the interview, specifically regarding “Daddy Feige”, the death of Kamala Khan, and more details on how the Spider-Office works. This isn’t something they typically do, but because there were a number of things they want to discuss, they thought it might be nice to try something new this time. So, expect a more loose discussion on the interview, which you should listen to, and on their thoughts on the state of the Spider-Office at the time of this particular recording. Spider-Ham (Season 6, Episode 9)
That’s all folks! On today’s show, Mark and Dan talk about the greatest swine in all of Spider-Man comics: no, not Razorback. Spider-Ham! In the mid-80s Marvel launched a new line of kid-friendly comics called Star Comics. The star of Star Comics was Spider-Ham, an anthropomorphized pig who fought crime dressed as Spider-Man and an unexpected hit character that enjoyed his own run of stories, languished in obscurity as a curiosity and recently re-emerged back into the spotlight as a cultural phenomenon. Plus, special guest and Spider-Ham co-creator TOM DEFALCO! If you’d like to follow along with our discussion by reading about Spider-Ham, we will be discussing Marvel Tails starring Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 and Peter Porker: The Spectacular Spider-Ham #1-17. These comics can be fairly hard to find in print, but luckily they are all available on Marvel Unlimited and were collected in a trade and digital collection as Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham: The Complete Collection, which is easily found on Amazon. I Wanna Be An Avenger (Season 6, Episode 8)
“That’s what I really waaaaaaant. Some avengiiiiin’.” In this season of the Amazing Spider-Talk, Dan and Mark are going back to the mid-80s when the Amazing Spider-Man title was handed over to one of the most legendary creative pairings in comics, who were just starting their creative partnership: Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. It was a time of immense change in the comics industry but together Tom and Ron returned Spider-Man to its Ditko-inspired roots to create one of the most beloved runs on the title. Don’t be mistaken though, because on this episode we are going to be talking about more Spider-Man stories by Roger Stern. No, this isn’t a flashback to last season, we are going to be talking about Spider-Man’s time joining up with the Avengers during Roger Stern’s run on that title, and again asking the question, “Is it time for Spider-Man to join the Avengers?” To read along with this episode, check out Avengers #236 and #237. On today’s show they are going to be talking about the launch of one of the longest running Spider-Man B-Titles, Web of Spider-Man. Back in 1985, Web of Spider-Man replaced Marvel Team-Up to become the third ongoing Spider-Man title being released from Marvel. We are going to be talking about why Marvel made the change, what they hoped to achieve with the new title, and discussing our thoughts on the first run of stories and the title’s lasting impact on the history of Spider-Man. The Black Suit (Season 6, Episode 6)
Black is slimming. In this season of the Amazing Spider-Talk, Dan and Mark are going back to the mid-80s when the Amazing Spider-Man title was handed over to one of the most legendary creative pairings in comics, who were just starting their creative partnership: Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. It was a time of immense change in the comics industry but together Tom and Ron returned Spider-Man to its Ditko-inspired roots to create one of the most beloved runs on the title. On today’s show they are going to be talking about Spider-Man’s first official alternate costume. They aren’t talking about What If… ? #1 where he wore a Fantastic Five outfit, or the time in Germany where Spider-Man stole a fake costume out of a store, so stop typing that angry email about how wrong they are. No, they are talking about Spider-Man’s Black Costume, the single-most audacious and yet beloved upgrade to a classic superhero costume of all time. Love it or hate it, the Black Suit and Spider-Man are like peanut butter and jelly, just of the blackberry variety. This episode was edited by Rick Coste.
