Our Amazing Friends: Black Suit Debut Creators (Ron Frenz & Tom DeFalco) Discuss Venom #252

This episode opens with our remembrance of artist Sal Buscema, who passed away on January 24, 2026. Then, enjoy a double-sized episode featuring an interview with Ron Frenz and Tom DeFalco about their history with the Venom character and the recent backup story they did for Venom #252, an “anniversary” celebration of Amazing Spider-Man #252, which kicked off their run and introduced the world to the black-suited Spider-Man. Then, Dan sits down with Professor Charlie Michael from Emory University’s Film and Media Department. He’s just released the paperback version of his book Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – Youth, Race and the Hypertext, which is an incredible dissection of the film that we are eager to share with our audience. We’ll be doing a follow-up interview with Charlie about the book, but we wanted to give you a chance to read it along with us. You can order a copy of the book here: https://www.routledge.com/Spider-Man-Into-the-Spider-Verse-Youth-Race-and-the-Hypertext/Michael/p/book/9780367764524 Rick Coste edited this episode. Our Amazing Friends: Joe Kelly (writer of The Amazing Spider-Man)

It took 12.5 years, but we’ve finally done it! Mark and Dan are thrilled to be joined by Joe Kelly, the current writer of The Amazing Spider-Man, whose history across the Spider-Man line of comics spans over two decades, going all the way back to his time writing Webspinners and 2099: World of Tomorrow. He was part of the Spidey-Braintrust of writers who rotated duties during the Brand New Day era, during which he wrote classics like “The Rage of the Rhino,” “American Son,” and “Grim Hunt.” For our specific purposes, he wrote one of Mark’s favorite comics, the time-traveling Deadpool (vol. 2) #11, in which Spider-Man revisits the events of Amazing Spider-Man #47. Since then, he’s written the hilarious Spider-Man/Deadpool series and miniseries like Non-Stop Spider-Man and Savage Spider-Man. His work across independent titles like I Kill Giants, Rex, Four Eyes, and Bad Dog is the stuff of legends, and these credits don’t even begin to scratch the surface of his TV work, which includes co-creating Ben-10 and even writing and producing Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man. This episode of the show wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our Patreon subscribers. This week’s Patreon podcasts include a review of Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 7) #14, and three episodes of the Whatever a Spider Can Diaries, which documents Dan’s process of writing a book about Spider-Man. The Graphic Novels (Season 7, Episode 12)

The moral of these stories: Never go on vacation. In this episode, Dan and Mark revisit a series of strange experiments in the Marvel line that arose from the rising popularity of the graphic novel format. Comics were slowly being accepted as literature in the United States, which opened the door for new ways to package the stories of characters like Spider-Man, brought new artists to the books, and presented opportunities to do big stories with returning favorite creators. If you want to read along with our conversation, all of the books discussed are currently available on Marvel Unlimited. They were collected in print in a book called Spider-Man: The Graphic Novels and can be bought online on most major comic retailers, whether through reprints or in their original formats. The books we’ll be discussing are specifically: – The Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky (Marvel Graphic Novel #22) – The Amazing Spider-Man: Parallel Lives (Marvel Graphic Novel #46) – Spider-Man: Spirits of the Earth (Marvel Graphic Novel #63) – Spider-Man: Fear Itself (Marvel Graphic Novel #72) Watch our show on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOPCnjzQZNViyEnoOuckaVQ We would also love to see you join our Amazing Spider-Slack community board. The Pre-Image Revolution (Season 7, Episode 11)

The Next Generation of Comics: IMAGE! In this episode, Dan and Mark discuss the events that led to the singlemost impactful shakeup to the modern comics industry since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s invention of the Marvel Comics Universe. On the pages of the X-Men and Spider-Man line of comics, Marvel had been fostering the careers of superstar artists like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, and Erik Larsen. But, when these creatives led Marvel to unprecedented sales and cultural impact, they realized that perhaps they could go supernova, leave Marvel behind, upend the comics industry, and found their own independent comic book publishing company that we know know as Image Comics. But, as Mark and Dan are hardly encyclopedic experts on the early days of Image, they’ve brought on the UK’s most handsome dhampire, Image Comics expert Josh Sutton from the excellent YouTube channel examining comics and superhero media, Panels to Pixels! Enjoy Josh’s channel @PanelstoPixels! That story is none other than “Power Prey!” but you may know it better as Amazing Spider-Man #329’s battle between the Captain Universe-possessed Spider-Man and the Tri-Sentinel. But this wouldn’t be one of our patented “Deconstructing” episodes if we weren’t joined by someone who worked on the comic. So, to help us discuss this Cosmic Spider-Man story, we are joined by Erik Larsen! More Marvel Madness! (Season 7, Episode 9)

Phenomenal cosmic powers… but can’t afford his living space! In this episode, Mark and Dan discuss the first line-wide events that crossed over into Spider-Man comics, as Marvel began to realize, in the wake of SECRET WARS, just how much attention they could bring to their entire line of characters and titles if they could find big stories to anchor them around, if only for a moment in time. In the late eighties and early nineties, the shockwaves of the X-Men event entitled INFERNO and the Avengers and Fantastic Four event entitled ACTS OF VENGEANCE hit the entire line of Spider-Man comics. It set a precedent for his inclusion in a grander Marvel story, even at the cost of reshaping the stories occurring in his book. The Spectacular Web of Gerry Conway (Season 7, Episode 8)

It’s good to be the King… In this episode, Mark and Dan talk about the return of Gerry Conway to the world of Spider-Man, as he took over writing duties on both Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man, after 13 years away from The Amazing Spider-Man. There, he would introduce new classic villains, like Tombstone, and tell a compelling yarn for over three years and 80 comics. If you want to read along with their conversation, they talk specifically about Spectacular Spider-Man issues #137-174, Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #8-11, Web of Spider-Man #35-70, and Web of Spider-Man Annual #5 and 6. These haven’t been collected in many places, though there is an Omnibus collecting the first half of these stories. A smattering of them are available on the Marvel Unlimited app and in the store, but many of these will only be found, for the time being, as physical copies. But, their discussion of these stories wouldn’t be complete without a visit from the man himself, back for his 10th appearance on the Amazing Spider-Talk, they are joined by Gerry Conway! VENOM (Season 7, Episode 7)

Based on the Eminem song of the same name. In this episode, Mark and Dan talk about the meteoric impact that Venom made when he first appeared in the pages of Spider-Man comics. And what better way to capture that spirit than going back into the catalog and rereleasing an older episode of the Amazing Spider-Talk from January 1988, where Mark and Dan reviewed Amazing Spider-Man #300, the first appearance of Venom, when it first appeared on the spinner racks of local supermarkets. This episode was edited by Rick Coste, and the video version of this podcast was edited by Alex Galucki. Our artwork is handcrafted by artists Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema, and Nick Cagnetti. Thank You, Peter David

This weekend, the legendary writer Peter David passed away at the age of 68 after a series of prolonged illness and public health battles. He is best known for his 12-year run of The Incredible Hulk stories, but in the world of Spider-Man he contributed beloved stories for Spectacular Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, and many more titles. But, he’s probably most famous for co-creating Spider-Man 2099. In this episode, Mark and Dan pay tribute to Peter David and replay their discussion of his story “The Commuter Cometh,” which they included in their Essentials series and consider one of the funniest Spider-Man comics ever written. document.createElement('audio'); https://media.blubrry.com/amazingspidertalk/content.blubrry.com/amazingspidertalk/RIP_Peter_David.mp3 Our artwork is handcrafted by artists Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema, Chris Sutcliffe, and Nick Cagnetti. The Toddfather (Season 7, Episode 5)

“Look how they drew my boy.” In this episode, Mark and Dan discuss the artistic contributions of the father of spaghetti webbing, who longtime listeners of this show may know as Dan’s “bosom buddy” and the man who reinvented the look of Spider-Man and his world by utterly destroying the house-style that John Romita Sr. had defined for two decades of Spider-Man comics, it’s Todd McFarlane. If you want to read along with their conversation, they’ll be talking specifically about Amazing Spider-Man issues #298-325 and 328, and Spider-Man #1-14 and 16. A Fearful Symmetry (Season 7, Episode 3)

I am the spider. In this episode, Mark and Dan will discuss how somewhere deep within the Marvel offices an idea was floated that, “Hey, we just married off Spider-Man. What do you think about killing him off in a dark Kraven story?” And the answer that came back was. “Yes.” That’s right; it’s time for Amazing Spider-Talk to finally talk about the critically beloved “Kraven’s Last Hunt” by writer JM DeMatteis and artist Mike Zeck, as well as its many sequels. Or are they just homages? Legasequels? Honestly, there are so many they can be almost impossible to categorize. Joining us for this conversation is Neil Kleid. Neil is a cartoonist and writer who, in 2014, adapted Kraven’s Last Hunt into a novel published by Marvel and Titan Books. He’ll help us drill down into what makes this story so special to comics readers the world over and talk about his process of adapting such a revered text. This episode was edited by Rick Coste. The Great Marriage Debate (Season 7, Episode 2)

“Until editorial mandate, do you part…” In this episode, we are going to be doing something very different. In a typical episode of Amazing Spider-Talk we would find a topic and feature a light discussion between Dan and Mark, but that’s not what we are going to be doing here. No, this time, we will be doing a debate about a topic that has been the center of debate since 1987: the Spider-Marriage between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. We covered the story of their relationship and marriage in some detail last season and in our “Wedding Special” episode from Valentine’s Day 2017, joined by our wives to discuss the event, so we wanted to do something different. Joining us for this debate, we wanted a Marriage-Truther to push back against our decidedly lukewarm takes about the Spider-Marriage in the form of a debate. We didn’t want to invite on a dime-a-dozen troll from social media to get into a loud argument with us, but someone who could articulately argue for the marriage and how it is essential to the story of Spider-Man. So, we decided that the best person to do so is our friend, who you may remember from our Race in Spider-Man episode, none other than the co-host of the “Questions: We Don’t Have Answers” podcast, Donovan Morgan Grant! Vote on who won the debate and listen to the next two episodes of Season 7 on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/superiorspidertalk Listen to Donovan’s “Questions: We Don’t Have Answers” podcast: https://qnoanswers.com This episode was edited by Rick Coste. A Revolving Door of Talent (Season 7, Episode 1)

“New creative teams, who dis?” In this episode, Dan and Mark discuss the fallout of the unexpected end of the DeFalco/Frenz run on Amazing Spider-Man, which left the creative voices leading the title in doubt. In the wake of the abrupt departure DeFalco/Frenz and messy end of “Gang War” and the deeply unsatisfying Hobgoblin reveal, as well as editorial shake-ups up and down the Marvel line, Amazing Spider-Man went into a transition period, with a ton of new voices coming on and off the title, including David Michelinie, JRJR, Alex Saviuk, JMD, Mike Zeck, Ann Nocenti, and Cindy Martin. The result was a confusing time to be a Spider-Man fan, but it also contained some of the most celebrated Spider-Man stories of all time, the first female writer to pen an issue of Amazing Spider-Man, and some significant status quo changes for Spidey’s world. If you want to read along with our conversation, we’ll be talking specifically about Amazing Spider-Man #290-297, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21, Web of Spider-Man #31-33, Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #131-133, as well as some of the other transition periods in Spider-Man’s history. All of these issues can be found on the Marvel Unlimited app, and many have been collected over the years in the Epic Collections #17 and #18, as well as the various “Kraven’s Last Hunt” graphic novel printings.
