Ep 102Ep. 102 - The Menstrual Disc That Could Change Your Life, Sexuality, and Female Entrepreneurship with Lauren Schulte, CEO + Founder of The FLEX Company

E

It was such a joy + a pleasure to interview Lauren Schulte, the CEO + Founder of The FLEX Company. We totally went there in today’s episode! From how to insert the disc, to experiencing painful vaginal infections, and even chatting about the way partners (without vaginas) say they feel about supporting women through PMS symptoms - we covered it all! Lauren shares with us how she suffered in silence with intense period pain and subsequent infections. When Lauren’s doctor informed her that tampon usage could be culpable for her chronic issues, she quit using them immediately and tried more than 30 alternative feminine hygiene products from all over the world (including the menstrual cup). Already a successful businesswoman herself, Lauren ditched her career in Silicon Valley to meet a HUGE need in the female healthcare market. Lauren decided it was time to invest appropriate resources into creating a solution to the period woes women all around the world could identify with. A perfect storm of personal experience and business + marketing smarts, Lauren’s initiative has changed the menstruation game with the best alternative to using tampons! We discuss… FLEX - A new period product called a “menstrual disc.” Tampons and menstrual cups, by design, “plug up” the vagina (causing cramping + bloating), while menstrual discs are meant to sit higher up, much like a diaphragm How FLEX can be left in for 12 hours AND you can have sex while it’s inserted - no infections or cramps! The way tampons absorb all bacteria, including the GOOD bacteria, and can often lead to an imbalance (+ subsequent vaginal infections) Lauren’s transition from a career in Silicon Valley to becoming the Founder + CEO of a start-up (which included taking big risks + pitching to many male investors) Navigating the imposter syndrome as a female/Founder + CEO Addressing challenging relationship dynamics in the workplace through open and honest conversations (Lindsey + Krista also chime in on their experiences working together on Almost 30 Podcast) How to give feedback well (Hint - ALWAYS lead with inquiry) Men who feel afraid and embarrassed about not knowing how to help their girlfriends through intrusive PMS symptoms Being a leader - a people and performance manager - as the Founder + CEO and, thereafter, shaping the workplace culture Lauren’s TEDx talk (in the works) - She plans to present the sociological understanding that there is no such thing as “gay” or “straight,” but rather sexuality is a spectrum ( + her own experience falling in love with a woman) Men embracing their feminine energy in heterosexual relationships (not necessarily being effeminate) Find more to love at almost30podcast.com! Ep 79Ep. 79 Leading Lady Mia Serafino On Hollywood, Doing The Work, + Being A Female In Film

E

Ever wondered what it's actually like to "Follow The Yellow Brick Road"? Well, newsflash IT'S HARD WORK. And the hilarious and talented rising star, MIA SERAFINO is here to tell us why. We're in need of some serious everyday inspo so get ready for grounded girl talk with Mia, an actress who's been on Shameless, Saving Mr. Banks, Crowded, and you guessed it, Oz: The Great & Powerful. This episode is honest and hilarious. We talk about the true consistency it takes to get what you want when pursuing your dream, being an actress in a town like L.A, putting your head down and doing the work, her transition between her early 20's and her late 20's, the challenges of being female in the entertainment industry, doubling for Mila Kunis, and kissing Hugh Jackman. That's right, HUGH FUCKING JACKMAN. Who then became one of her major acting mentors. #SAME. Mia inspired us to the MAX, sharing her mantras that make her feel legitimate and confident in any situation. But in terms of the battle of balance - relationships, career, your craft, money, and everything in between - even if you're not an actress, this conversation is something that we can all relate to. Some goodies from this episode... "I never cared about being famous, I just wanted to be good." "The harder I worked, the luckier I got." "When you just make it about the work, nothing else matters." Because her family was health-oriented from the get-go (we're talking buying almond milk before anyone even knew that existed), it was engraved in her brain being active and eating well. It wasn't until high school when she quit sports and continued to eat the junk food she had been consuming for years, that she started going down an unhealthy path with food. In order to loose weight, she restricted herself, binging on the weekends, saving up to buy "the ab belt", and weight loss pills. When Jess got to college, everything just escalated. Her story continues with ... Jess's first job out of college as a nutrition coach for an extremely restricting weight loss company, while she was still dealing with her own demons LOSING + GAINING 40 POUNDS several different times being surrounded by a family that was 100% dedicated to a restricting diet how RESENTMENT was a key part of her battle with food the word "DIET" versus "LIFESTYLE" moving to LA with a "Devil Wears Prada" boss, triggering her former habits, feeling sick and exhausted all of the time how her stressful + unhealthy lifestyle in LA caused constant migraines + how a program for ending migraines saved her life her 3AM OPIPHANY for becoming a HEALTH COACH + quitting her crazy media job "90% of diets fail" - because it's a "quick fix" how EVERYTHING - food, relationships, home life, jobs, self-care - is a piece of the puzzle to create a healthy life "SUGAR COATING YOUR LIFE" - the biological addicting power of sugar what happens when you DON'T eat sugar? E

This week we're givin' off some HIGH VIBES, talking all things CRYSTALS, and much much more with the founders and CEO's of Energy Muse, HEATHER ASKINOSIE + TIMMI JANDRO! Long story short, Heather and Timmi have been friends for nearly 45 years, living lives of adventure, spirituality, and self-exploration and healing. While Heather was the queen of holistic energy experiments in her home in Manhattan beach for many years, Timmi worked in the garment industry for just as long. And with that combination, Energy Muse was born - celebrating the use of crystals for living your best, most magical life! Back to the show though, for those of you who don't know anything about crystals and need that CRYSTALS 101 lesson, this episode is for you. We start off with a CRYSTAL STONE READING (oooo la fricken la), to reveal what's going on in our lives and find more clarity. And from there we explore ... their stories growing up together, their former careers, and jumping into adulthood first starting their business - making necklaces, performing energy experiments, and doing their low-key crystal deals the evolution of Heather and Timmi's business partnership and trusting relationship when they were trailblazers in the new and fragile crystal industry + the stigma that came with that the energy of the earth + how it got a bad rap how crystals and stones are TOOLS for life - for ritual purposes, gaining composure, touch, feeling comforted, and reminding yourself the value of the Earth what Heather + Timmi have to say to the SKEPTICS our unique ways of realigning ourselves what it was like writing their new book "Crystal Muse" - and how therapeutic and hard the process was showing up for yourself for 11 minutes a day, a ritual, a practice, anything, and if you can't do that, how can you commit to anything else “Do something consistently for yourself for 11 days, or even 40 days, for 11 minutes a day, you’re going to learn more about yourself in that time frame than you can in years of therapy.” Timmi + Heather on how crystals and self-energy work is more than about just you, but it's about being a COLLECTIVE WORLD the power of that recent ECLIPSE in August and what's happened to the Earth since then and LINDSEY'S ACCURATE and MOVING READING from Heather - it's going to BLOW YOUR MIND This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy Podsights - https://podsights.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 75Ep. 75 - Modern Mystic + Sexuality Goddess Alexandra Roxo on Unleashing Your Inner Shaman and Changing the Female Narrative

E

With everything going on in the world, good & bad, it's about time we have another MYSTICAL MAMA on the show to work with our energy. The fiery and foxy ALEXANDRA ROXO (side note: what a fabulous name) is one of LA's best ENERGY and TRANSFORMATIONAL workers, seeking all things mystical and magic. She's also an actress and director, working with names like Spike Jonze, Clive Owen, and Steven Soderbergh. Needless to say, she's a bundle of creative light that we all need right here, right now (Not to mention, she's speaking at our Sex, Love, & Other Things event). With a Catholic father from a Brazil and a New Age-y mother from Georgia, Alexandra began immersing herself in a spiritual lifestyle from the early age of 12. From angels, spirits, ghosts, and auras, she was constantly surrounded by religion and the curiosity of other-worldlyness, with the help of her guide Bobby. When she got to college at New York University, she took it to the next level and dived into studying meditation in Italy, living a healthy lifestyle, and studying Eastern Religion Traditions. However, when she discovered Moon Rituals from one of her professors at NYU, she realized that kind of feminism was missing from all of the other practices. And she found her calling as a healer and energy worker. From there, we went into ... PLANT MEDICINE - in particular, AYAHUASCA - what is it? why should you use? what does it do? where do people use it in the world? what is it like? how Ayahuasca HELPED Alexandra FORGIVE HERSELF, about everything from body image, doing good, and letting go of guilt and shame "Hey girl you either do good stuff on this planet, like everything you say has to be for the good of all, or don't say a word." - Alexandra on what she realized during her use of Ayahuasca "All of that is useful to heal and to work through things that are causing barriers between you and your best self. It's not just for play but if you really want to break through to the other side, it's self-awareness, self-consciousness issues, body image issues, issues with your parents, all of those things can really help you." - Alexandra on practicing plant medicine we touch on ALIENS and fairies too (hehe) her WRITING about sex, medicine, wellness, and spirituality on The Numinous, Mind Body Green, and Horoscope.com her badass, raw, and real MENTORSHIP PROGRAM - intuitively bringing women into their emotional bodies and connecting with every part of your body MOON CLUB - her group mentorship program based on the Moon's Rituals, making yourself your own healer, and sharing stories in a safe/open community how to find a SPACE OF SURRENDER (not involving tequila) "One thing is that a lot of spiritual practices are actually masculine-centric in the sense that they come from a place of structure and rigidity. Our whole lives are so structured, I mean we have fricken Google Calendar and all of this stuff going on all day. What I find missing from women's lives is a space of surrender." - Alexandra on surrendering the difference between being SLUTTY and SEXUALITY how WOMEN TRIGGER EACH OTHER - especially with men and beauty THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HEAL/EMPOWER YOURSELF! Ep 70Ep. 70 - Redefining Comedy + Owning his Thirties One Embarrassing Story at a Time with Funny Guy Billy Griffin

E

Pulling again from our hat of comedians our listeners know and love, we bring on the one, the only, BILLY GRIFFIN. And boy, will you sh*t your pants from laughing so hard, and within in the first minutes no less. We're keepin' things light and a lil cray cray with Billy, a Los Angeles-based comedian, actor, and host, who's been on America's Funniest Home Videos, performs local stand-up, and with the infamous Second City Improv Program in Chicago. Right away we dive into only the most random of everyday thoughts, like "How am I going to pay for my kid's college tuition?", "How did my parents even afford that?", or "Was my father shitting himself in a closet somewhere when he realized how much it cost?" Or if that isn't hitting home for you, Billy opens up about how he went from college football star, moving to Chicago and working shitty recruiting and insurance jobs, and then moving back home. But coincidentally, he won enough money on a game show to move out to Los Angeles and finally pursue comedy. Basically, this is where his comedic journey begins and he explains everything from ... pumping up his crowds getting pre-show jitters no matter how charismatic you are his very first gig all of his comedian friends and their equally funny encounters what it means to be a "Warm Up Guy" for show audiences how dating in LA is like having a JOB - you have to be proactive the fear of grabbing coffee with someone you don't know that well ... dating PET PEEVES the best questions to start dating app convos with This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy Podsights - https://podsights.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 68Ep. 68 - The Expectation Hangover + the Art of Letting Go with Guru of Change Christine Hassler

E

This week we bring on one of our long-time idols and guru for all things motivational, CHRISTINE HASSLER. Basically, she's a personal transformation genius - along with a bestselling author, podcast host, TV show host on TLC, & keynote speaker. She's a go-to mind for seeking clarity in any part of life, whether it's love, relationships, careers, personal goals, and most importantly, the immense change that happens in your 20's and 30's. By the time she was 25, she was the youngest agent in Hollywood, getting promoted, attending all of the award shows, making more money than most people her age, and dating a hot-shot producer. She had it all ... but did she? That's what we dive into. This realization that she wasn't truly doing things for herself sparked her big transition, which included quitting her job, going in debt, and losing the love her life by the time she was 26. So needless to say, things were changing and she decided to do something about it. MAJOR KEYWORDS here, people: beliefs, decisions, change, identity ... And not to mention, all of these GOLDEN goodies from Christine: in your 20's you think every decision is a forever decision living for society or living for yourself being a victim or a creator in any difficult situations the idea that things need to fall apart to be rebuilt how everyone deals with their emotions/insecurities/fears, ie. behavior, mannerisms, actions, mentality, etc. as children we don't have control over what happens to us, but when you're an adult, it's UP TO YOU, which can be scary "reacting to the programming" - how did you grow up, what were you told, what does it mean & how does it effect our own personal decisions? what do you BELIEVE about life that makes IT HARDER? ANXIETY coming from beliefs that don't serve us we spend more time avoiding rejecting instead of doing what we want how to show up EXTERNALLY + INTERNALLY for yourself in order to handle REJECTION the toxic game of PEOPLE PLEASING Get ready to walk away from this ep feeling MOTIVATED, BADASS, + READY AF for everything! Ep 65Ep. 65 - Super Model + Bad B Kari Calhoun on How to be Your Authentic Self and Change Industry Standards

E

Oh, this episode is just a couple of models just having a discussion about models doing model things. JUST KIDDING. But, what a discussion that would be ... On the real tho, Krista and Linds sat down this week with a #reallifemodel KARI CALHOUN, one of the most popular names in America's Next Top Model history (Season 21, what uppppp!). And we get to all the details, from start to finish on her model journey. We talk about her story, moving from Dallas to Iowa to Los Angeles, and why she fell in love with the city full of so many opportunities. (She literally hopped off the plane at LAX) Although at first she never took her modeling career seriously, she got signed to a boutique agency and started going to auditions, which were as intense as people say they are. There was a long period where Kari's lack of confidence was showing through the camera & kept her asking "Why am I not getting it?" or "What am I doing wrong?" So how did she get her groove back? Soul searching, not giving a f*ck, letting go, taking everything step-by-step, & realizing the auditions that best fit HER. Kari also lays down the law when it comes to #INSTAMODELS & why they shouldn't be honored or idolized. "What goes viral about you should be your character and how you live your life, " she explains. MIC FRICKEN DROP. And in addition, she touches on how gratitude can get lost during the hustle. SUCH A GOOD POINT! But we all know you want to hear about Kari's ANTM career started, which by the way, was when Kari was holding a plank at the gym while a casting director approached her! From the drama to the producers egging things on, Kari TELLS ALL & she learned more than she could have imagined from it. But you'll have to hear for yourself now on #iTunes! Okay ladies + gents ... this episode is a BIG ONE. Not only do we have one but TWO guests, Danielle and Whitney of Sakara Life. They've known each other since they were twelve in Arizona, and moved to the Big Apple for their dreams of modeling and working on Wall Street. But as time passed, their struggles grew along with their go-go-go kind of lifestyle. Things basically got CRAY ... fast. Everything started to add up, from going-out, getting acne, drinking, eating out all of the time, working 80 hours/week, and not taking the time to take care of themselves. And this is how their new new lifestyle started. They both had a lot of healing and needed to remind each other food is medicine. So from there they started being their own guinea pigs, and cooking their own meals and creating their own recipes. Eventually, they knew they were on to something, and they started delivering meals on their bikes around NYC to their clients. In terms of the food science aspects of living the Sakara Life, here are some vital topics we touched on: micro biome = bacteria living in your gut 95% of serotonin is made in the gut eating the right food helps that good bacteria thrive, and visa versa adding greens is KEY to every meal - smoothies, sandwiches, soups, etc. eat well and don't stress about it because studies show that stress/anxiety leads to aging faster science points to plants as the key to anti-aging eating a VARIETY of plants is important because it builds the different types of amino acids your body needs studies also show that your personality is more present when eating healthy It's all about living a life of clarity, freedom, health, and nourishment. Ep 60Ep. 60 - Finding Your Identity + Peace Through Life's Darkest Times with Meditation Guru, Biet Simkin

E

BIET SIMKIN is probably the most interesting person in the world ... seriously, your mind is about to be BLOWN. The sh*t that she's been through and the person who she has become because of that is BEYOND all of our dreams of determination and strength. So Krista + Lindsey are peeling back the layers of the goddess Biet Simkin ... For those of you who don't know who Miss Simkin is, she New York native, first-generation American and a leader in the world of meditation. Not only was her father a philosophical shaman and gave her the Book of the Dead at age nine, Biet was singer and fashion fiend who spent a big part of her life living the life of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. And not the glamorous, Hollywood kind. After struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction, mourning her father's death, as well as her child's passing, Biet talks about her Ah-Ha moment of sobering up and changing her life for good. She knew it was time to find the person she was meant to be, which is what this episode is all about. The journey to find your identity is hard for everyone, and Biet has developed a meditation technique not only to help you find it but to help you be the best person you can be. Her technique is like "watching a documentary on yourself" and observing your every move AKA "Divided Attention Mediation". Another amazing point Biet stress' is how we are more than just our body and our minds. Everything from hallucinations, serendipity, and voices - those all mean more than we know. And Biet talks about how listening to these transcendental messages LITERALLY saved her LIFE and how her practice develops this kind of acknowledgment. It's a spirituality POW WOW worth taking a listen to #Almost30Nation!
