It is time to get rid of the electoral college! All voters, regardless of their political affiliation, are disenfranchised because the power of our votes are either diluted or inflated, depending entirely on where you live. This is contrary to the intention of the Constitution and its Amendments regarding equal rights under the law. This is against the “one person, one vote” principle. This is a non-partisan issue. To read it as a 5-minute blog To watch it as a 5-minute video Across the political spectrum, advocates for abolishing the electoral college system include Brookings Institution, the Heritage Foundation, National League of Women Voters, Pew Research Foundation, etc. How can we replace the electoral college system? There are two ways: either by Constitutional Amendment, or by the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC). Amending the US Constitution requires a two-thirds vote in both US House of Representatives and the Senate.Three-fourths of state legislatures must then ratify the amendment. This is challenging, since states with disproportionately more voting power won’t easily give up. NPVIC, on the other hand, can bypass this challenge, with the state's plenary power over election, believed to be given by the US Constitution. As of now, 17 states have already signed up, consisting of 77% of the 270 electoral votes needed to elect a President. When more states join the pact, they will award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. What can we do as citizens? The great irony: The Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded today (Oct. 9, 2024), to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their work that contributed to AI neural networks and pattern recognition, among other areas. At least one of these AI godfathers is not optimistic about AI: Geoffrey Hinton was asked by journalists following the announcement about Generative AI and ChatGPT, he said: “We have no experience of what it’s like to have things smarter than us”. Hinton has frequently voiced fears of an AI apocalypse. Joanne Z. Tan likens it to an "Oblivious Death" syndrome, very much like a frog being boiled slowly to death, as humans become overly reliant on AI-generated realities. AI could lead to a loss of human ability to discern reality independently, based on human first hand experiences. Saving cost at the expense of customer frustration is a losing game, even for an iconic brand. The problem in AI experience design (AIXD) is the culprit for bad customer experience everywhere: too many customers cannot get a live agent to answer their simple questions, after calling and “talking” to an AI voice used on IVR (interactive voice response), and they often just give up in frustration and helplessness. "Is this the best AI can get? Or is it the worst? Actually, it is fairly easy to change this contact center nightmare: redesign the way AI answers the calls in a customer-centric way. The invisible “hand” and the hidden mind behind the design of this AI customer experience is “either-customers-fit-into-my-categories-or-goodbye”. The problem is: Whose priority governs the AI experience design (“XD”)? Xfinity’s current design is all from the point of Xfinity’s convenience, not customers’. There are issues not so cut and dried, squarely fitting into the four categories the AI voice keeps repeating to the callers. Why can’t they simply add a “none of the above” category? And why didn’t Xfinity honor its promise of “connecting to a live agent, any time”, but instead forcing texting or other virtual choices onto a customer who repeatedly asked for a live agent? Xfinity AI imposes its over-simplified choices onto customers, at the expense of their various and nuanced needs. It is not human centered, not user friendly, not customer centric. To differentiate Genuine Videos from Deepfakes, start with a simple disclaimer When seeing is not believing, when truth and trust are replaced by falsehood and distrust, the foundation for fact-based decision making is like a rug being pulled out from under our feet. This is a real threat to democracy and civilized societies. What are you waiting for? For the government to step in and regulate? Even if it happens eventually, it will be too little, too late. Doing nothing means you are waiting for deepfakes to take over your right and ability to access truthful information - you are allowing deepfakes to further mislead yourself and humanity. Personal branding is not about illusory self-aggrandizing, since illusion leads to disillusion when one’s own views of one’s value propositions are disconnected from what your customers and your market want. Neither is personal branding related to ego boosting: when one’s inflated belief about oneself is not correlated to reality, ego boosting will end up with ego bruising. BTW, those with fragile egos often seek ego boosting, consciously or unconsciously, and inevitably end up with ego bruising. It is a cycle when the root cause is not addressed. Personal branding is not psychotherapy either, even though the info-collecting part may have certain resemblances. A brand’s value and relevancy are always in the perceptions of oneself and others. There is always a practical purpose behind personal branding, professional branding, LinkedIn branding, or business branding, whether the objectives are for client acquisition, status, influence, money, power, glamor, affection, legacy, etc. A brand is established and continuously advanced by serving a target audience in return for compensation by that target audience in your marketplace, or other forms of your desired ROI. ... What did Friedrich Nietzsche say about those who believe themselves to be "good"? (Joanne Z. Tan:) Self righteousness leads to moralization based on belief but NOT on facts or truth. You believe you are good, thus everything else contrary to that belief is NOT good, NOT true, NOT right.How dangerous! That is the beginning of the end of democracy, liberty, and what is true good. Facts are facts. Truth is truth, whether it is convenient for you or not, whether truth contradicts your belief about yourself or not. Your opinions, beliefs - you have a birth right to them, but when you think your opinions and beliefs are facts and truth, AND the only version of truth, because “I am good”, you are sacrificing the truth, yourself, your country, and humanity, and all the good. So, do not put your “goodness” above truth and facts. You can be wrong, but you are not your mistakes. Democracy is no guarantee of no-mistakes either. Both you and democracy will be better if we all honor the truth, the facts, above everything else. Ironically, dubbed the “father of the atomic bomb”, Oppenheimer, who was talented with multiple languages and loved poetry, was a man of science AND humanity. It was his humanity and a sense of duty that drove him to be vocal against the nuclear arms race, which eventually made him a target of humiliation and destruction by his enemies. Among so many things I have learned, one is Oppenheimer’s way with narratives, in writing and speech. I admire Oppenheimer’s nuance, intellect, brilliance, and the poetry in his use of English language, to convey complex thoughts, to architect subject matters, to persuade what he staunchly believed in, and to imply the mystery of the unknown. Even in his most persuasive statements, his points were woven by logic, facts, and structure.
